Bacon Wrappers

Bet you never thought you’d see that title on the blog, huh? No worries, I did not partake in the bacon action 😉

How’s your morning going? Hope you’ve had a great day so far <3

So here in Tucson, a food truck phenomenon is bacon-wrapped hot dogs, called Sonoran Dogs.

Everyone in the fam, including the Pilot, is obsessed with them.

guero

There’s a place here called Guero Canelo, which specializes in Sonoran dogs, and basically you get a bacon-wrapped hot dog and load it up with toppings like beans, salsa, onions, cheese, sour cream, etc.

When my bro said he wanted to make those for dinner last night, I knew the fam would go crazy for it and decided to contribute the salad.veg

He got to work wrapping the hot dogs:

hot dogs

(that picture makes me gag a little- sorry if it did that for you, too, haha)

and asked me to cut the bread in an inappropriate manner.

bread (2)

(he said this way it would hold the toppings better)

For the salad, I chopped up:

-bell pepper

-kalamata olives

-cucumber

and added kidney beans, chickpeas and cilantro:

veg (2)

then right before serving, added chopped avocado, romaine and dressed it with lime juice, olive oil, sea salt, garlic, cumin and pepper.

salad

Above the salad is a quesadilla casserole my bro made. I asked him for the recipe.. and he said it was a secret, haha.

The finished bacon wrappers:

hot dogs (2)

There’s so much I could say right now, but this is a PG-rated blog haha.

It was a fun unique-to-Tucson dinner, fo sho. The best part about it was hanging out with the fam, though- I’m so blessed to be in Tucson finally! I think I like it here 😉

This morning, Bella and I went on our morning walk, and just got home to make some b-fast.

On the agenda today:

-Massage (YESSSSSSS!!!!!)

-Errands

-Updating the blog roll – I’ll be going through the comments to add new friends to the list, too 🙂

-Meeting with a blog reader at the resort

-Weights/cardio

See ya later friends <3

xoxo

Gina

Something to talk about: What’s your local destination food? There’s gotta be something crazier out there than bacon-wrapped hot dogs 😉

Heads up: If you missed the Nuttzo deal and would like to try some, we have 23 left in my OpenSky store at the promo price. Hit it up if you would like- they’ll go quickly!

My brother would be all over those. I feel like a veggie version could be awesome though- perhaps wrapped in tempeh bacon? 😉

    • Fitnessista on May 9, 2011 at 11:41 am

      tempeh bacon……….. 🙂

  2. Jackie @ Baking Charms on May 9, 2011 at 11:34 am

Bahaha between the dogs and those buns you should put a warning at the top of the post! Too funny 😀

    • Fitnessista on May 9, 2011 at 11:41 am

      right? so inappropriate

    • Melissa on May 9, 2011 at 11:52 am

Hahahah yes… ok glad I’m not the only one who saw something dirty with those buns LOL

  3. Cara on May 9, 2011 at 11:35 am

Haha, my dad makes those, but calls them “Swanky Frankies”…don’t ask…

    • Fitnessista on May 9, 2011 at 11:40 am

HAHAHA! nothing will make you swankier than if you had a piece of bacon wrapped around you

    • Amanda on May 9, 2011 at 11:59 am

My grandma referred to a “swanky franky” as a hot dog topped (or wrapped…I never really asked for details) with bacon and cheese.
Gina, I’m with you on the gag factor and NC-17 humor.

      • Fitnessista on May 9, 2011 at 12:04 pm

        hahah glad i’m not alone

  4. Emily on May 9, 2011 at 11:35 am

I’m gonna go ahead and say it — NYC, pizza. BAM. The controversy is out there, where to get the best slice. But I think New York has got it, hands down!!

  5. Dawn @ Blonde on a Mission on May 9, 2011 at 11:37 am

This whole post made me LOL .. so much imagery at work here. I haven’t had a hot dog since I was a kid… I don’t know if I could enjoy it with the texture & how it’s shaped & how slimy they are….. haha
That salad looks amazing though! I tend to gravitate towards the colourful fresh food on any given occasion.

    • Fitnessista on May 9, 2011 at 11:40 am

      you and me both, girl

  6. Allison @ Food For Healing on May 9, 2011 at 11:37 am

oh i could really go for a massage! i’m jealous

those bacon wrapped hotdogs would probably be a hit in my family too! haha very interesting.
nice to see you were able to just roll with it, and make your own thing and help out with the toppings for the fam. True sport 😛

    • Fitnessista on May 9, 2011 at 11:39 am

      that’s how i roll, haha

  7. Dani on May 9, 2011 at 11:38 am

Haha well your salad looks good! I don’t think DC has any crazy food, we love peeling crabs and we put Old Bay spice on everything though…

  8. Emily on May 9, 2011 at 11:40 am

Ever since I got pregnant I’ve been craving hot dogs, which I didn’t really eat a lot before, but now that I can’t have them (they’re on the no-no food list) I want them even more! Add the bacon, it’s my pregnant dreams come true! haha So funny, because I think normally they’d make me gag. In Central Pennsylvania we put chicken or turkey on waffles and drown it in gravy. It took me moving out of the area though to realize that was unusual haha

    • Fitnessista on May 9, 2011 at 11:42 am

      haha! so cute
my bro LOVES chicken and waffles, but he puts syrup on his

  9. Kendall on May 9, 2011 at 11:41 am

I am not a vegetarian but I do not like bacon! The salad looks amazing. Enjoy your massage!!

  10. AJ on May 9, 2011 at 11:43 am

I have to confess.. for all my love of all things veggie and healthy, I do sometimes have a craving for completely unhealthy and unatural things like those hotdogs : ) That being said, your veg contributions look even more delicious and not nearly as guilt-inducing.

I live in Minnesota, where we have some weirdo Norweigan traditions like Lutefisk. If you dont know what that is, I caution you to google it when are aren’t going to eat anytime soon. That being said… some Norweigans love it!

    • Fitnessista on May 9, 2011 at 11:50 am

      i’m off to google, haha

    • Emily on May 9, 2011 at 12:10 pm

Eww…Lutefisk! I’m originally from a Norweigan area up that way, also, so I know what that is! Yuck!

  11. Lindsey on May 9, 2011 at 11:44 am

Oh my, my husband would love these! haha. I should try it with turkey bacon for him. But I am with you the pic does make me gag a bit 😉

  12. LisaG on May 9, 2011 at 11:45 am

Love the weiners; I think they look good!! What did you have the casserole and salad, yes?

    • Fitnessista on May 9, 2011 at 11:49 am

i had salad and beans.. after my kettlecorn, i wasn’t that hungry!
      miss you <3

i like the smell of bacon, but not the taste. im sure your family loved them!
love the picture of you and the pilot. 🙂
yay for massages! im a little jealous

  14. Errign on May 9, 2011 at 11:46 am

Hmmm, New Hampshire does not have anything, erm, I mean, we have no food delicacies such as bacon wrapped hot dogs. We have lots of trees & maple syrup, and we used to have the old man of the mountain (big stone face-profile naturally left in a mountain side), but he fell…

This post totally made me LOL, by the way!

    • jen on May 9, 2011 at 12:32 pm

I grow up in nh, now in mass but theres always new england seafood, chop suey is a new england thing as well. plus nh has lots of canadian inspired food, you would’nt know it till you go outside of new england. Also fluff, outside of new england they only have the marshmallow cream.

      • Errign on May 9, 2011 at 2:10 pm

You’re totally right on the fluff – my bro lives in MT and he has me ship him fluff!

I totally spaced all of the fun NE things! 🙂

  15. fittingbackin on May 9, 2011 at 11:49 am

I’ve never seen anything like that. Meat wrapped in meat – I don’t think I could eat it!! Did love learning about them – the food different areas eat is always entertaining!

  16. Teresa@vivaciousrunninggirl on May 9, 2011 at 11:51 am

Hot dogs are my husband’s favorite food….that salad looks delicious!

  17. Erin @ GlamPersuasion on May 9, 2011 at 11:54 am

Ha my husband would love those hot dogs! Yuck, but he’d love ’em 🙂 Your salad looks awesome, that might have to be on the dinner agenda this evening.

I’m glad you’re back in Tucson too!

    <3

  18. Brandi on May 9, 2011 at 11:54 am

The salad looks awesome and refreshing….the bacon and hotdogs however…meh. My dad would be all over those though! One year he ordered a Turducken for Thanksgiving. It looked like Frankenstein meat.

I’d definitely like to see a quesadilla casserole recipe…you sure the bro wont give it up!? 🙂

  19. Holly @ The Runny Egg on May 9, 2011 at 11:55 am

I think the hot dogs/bacon look really good — but I love bacon.

And I think the way you cut those rolls is what pushes this into the PG-13 or higher rating.

Crazy local foods — well, SPAM comes from MN and I think that it is BEYOND crazy.

    • Fitnessista on May 9, 2011 at 11:56 am

my bro told me to do it! i was snickering like an 8 year old boy the whole time

  20. RhodeyGirl on May 9, 2011 at 11:57 am

Philly has SCRAPPLE. Don’t even ask what it is because it’s way more gross than bacon wrapped hot dogs!

    • Fitnessista on May 9, 2011 at 11:57 am

      just googled. EWW! haha

  21. Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin on May 9, 2011 at 11:58 am

I think I saw these on an episode of Man v. Food once!

I can’t really think of any foods that Ontario is famous for! Except maybe the wine in our Niagara region. That’s definitely worth checking out. 😀

  22. Katie on May 9, 2011 at 12:02 pm

My best friend cassie LOVES bacon! She would be loving this, haha! I guess Denny’s has bacon featured stuff right now, I saw a bacon ice cream dessert advertised, ha!

Have a great day love! Miss u!! How are u?!

    • Fitnessista on May 9, 2011 at 12:03 pm

      bacon ice cream? yuck haha.
i miss you too! things are going well- hope you had a happy mother’s day! love you

  23. Jaime on May 9, 2011 at 12:03 pm

I just moved from Seattle, and they were known for their cream cheese hot dogs. I was a vegetarian when I lived in Seattle, so I never tried one but everyone LOVED them. There were cream cheese hot dog stands on every corner!

  24. jrob on May 9, 2011 at 12:04 pm

bacon wrapped hot dogs are pretty big here in Los Angeles but serve primarily as post-party food. There’s always people with carts on the street outside of clubs and bars cooking them up. They’re the ultimate “street-meat”. They serve them with grilled bell peppers and onions. I’ve never had them since I don’t eat pork but my husband swears by them.

  25. Stefanie @TheNewHealthy on May 9, 2011 at 12:04 pm

Damn those secret recipes! 😉 That looks delicious!

  26. Tamara on May 9, 2011 at 12:05 pm

We have deep fried butter on a stick here in Savannah!

    • Fitnessista on May 9, 2011 at 12:16 pm

      no way!

      • LisaG on May 9, 2011 at 12:40 pm

That must be Paula Deen inspired!

  27. Christy on May 9, 2011 at 12:05 pm

Wisconsin has cheese curds. Not like deep fried cheese curds but hunks of cheese that are squeaky when you eat them. (If they aren’t squeaky, then they aren’t fresh).
We also put noodles in chili. I’m not sure how odd this is… but I once ordered chili in another state and it didn’t come with noodles… I was slightly disappointed. A lot of people put cheese on their chili.
Basically it’s Wisconsin… cheese goes on everything.

  28. Michelle @ Turning Over a New Leaf on May 9, 2011 at 12:07 pm

We have a drive-in theatre about 45 miles south of us that specializes in this “Chihuahua sandwich” with chili, cabbage, pimentos, and onions. Um. Yuck.

Though, I’ve got to say, I’m rather intrigued by a bacon-wrapped hot dog. 😉

  29. Cait @ Beyond Bananas on May 9, 2011 at 12:07 pm

Those bacon wrappers would be something my boyfriend would devour! I should treat him one night! 🙂
ENJOY YOUR MASSAGE.. you deserve it!

Talking of things wrapped in bacon, have you ever seen the “Epic Mealtime” videos on youtube? If you can control the gag-reflex, they are HYSTERICAL!!!

Here in Hawaii it’s loco moco or spam musubi. Loco moco is a big plate of white rice topped with a hamburger patty, fried eggs and drowned in brown gravy. Spam musubi is a block of sticky rice with a piece of teriyaki spam on top, wrapped in nori. and neither are my thing. yuck.

    • Tiffany (Stuffed with Fluff) on May 9, 2011 at 12:17 pm

I LOVE loco moco and spam musubi. Unfortunately, loco moco just isn’t the same in LA! Guess this means I need to visit Hawaii more often =)

  33. Emily on May 9, 2011 at 12:13 pm

I currently live in the south and we have, as expected, an over abundance of barbecue. They also have annual fried festivals. They literally fry everything and anything (seriously, you name it – they fry it)…then put it on a stick…and charge people money for it. Icky.

  34. Tiffany (Stuffed with Fluff) on May 9, 2011 at 12:14 pm

We have something similar to that in LA (Tijuana dog/danger dog) that apparently is now the official hot dog of Los Angeles (who knew?). I don’t eat them often, but admit that they’re GREAT after a long night of drinking and dancing or sports watching.

  35. Chelsea on May 9, 2011 at 12:14 pm

Here in Montana our destination food is beer!! It’s cheap, its good, its worth coming here for and I love it! My hubby loved the look of bacon wrapped hot dogs 🙂

  36. Tiffany (Stuffed with Fluff) on May 9, 2011 at 12:18 pm

Also, San Diego is known for their California burritos (carne asada burrito w/ french fries inside) as well as Carne Asada fries!

  37. Suzi on May 9, 2011 at 12:23 pm

In Nova Scotia we have something called Lunenburg pudding, but baby it’s not actually pudding. I’ve never tried it, in fact I can’t look at it without wanting to puke, but there are those select few that actually enjoy it. Belch. I encourage you not to google this one if the hot dogs and bacon bake you feel queasy!

  38. Mary @ Bites and Bliss on May 9, 2011 at 12:25 pm

I think just about anything could taste good when wrapped in bacon…even though I no longer eat meat. 😛

  39. kathleen on May 9, 2011 at 12:27 pm

i’m from philly and some people make what is called a “philly taco” from famous places on south street. they take a hot dog, put it inside a cheesesteak from jim’s and then put the hot dog/cheesesteak combo inside a giant piece of lorenzo’s pizza folded up taco style.

    g-ross 😉

      WHOA!

  40. rachael on May 9, 2011 at 12:28 pm

The destination food in my area is probably clam chowder, nothing too interesting.

  41. Faith @ lovelyascharged on May 9, 2011 at 12:31 pm

I honestly don’t know what sort of local yokel food we Orlando-ites have! Although this post made me miss the series I did last year, “Eating Through the NFL”, where each Sunday I researched the local food for whatever opponent “my team” was playing and based my lunch or dinner off of their famous food. It was so much fun and I got to try some awesome things…I think I’m going to do it again this year!

  42. Annie D @ Annie's Simple Life on May 9, 2011 at 12:33 pm

Ok your bread comment made me LOL!!!!

I have never ever seen bacon wrapped hot dogs!! YIKES. Your salad looks DE-LISH though!!! 🙂 Have a happy Monday my dear!

  43. Andrea on May 9, 2011 at 12:42 pm

My boyfriend always wants a bacon wrapped hotdog with all the toppings after a late night out! People are obsessed with them here in San Diego too… I just don’t get it!

  44. Katherine: Unemployed on May 9, 2011 at 12:45 pm

I just know the south is infamous for all things fried (Twinkies, pickles, funnel cakes) and buttered but I’d like to think of something classier. *my* destination food is hummus and no one can stop me from declaring it so 😉

    • Fitnessista on May 9, 2011 at 12:48 pm

      rock on, girl

  45. Erin on May 9, 2011 at 12:52 pm

I was just in Tucson for work at the Loews Ventana Canyon and was told I had to try the Sonoran Dogs before I left…I didn’t. I don’t think I missed out on much but my boyfriend would go NUTS for it, I may have to try and recreate them!

  46. Tori (Fresh Fruition) on May 9, 2011 at 12:54 pm

Love your shirt! That salad looks delicious. I’m craving salad majorly lately. I’ll have to whip this up! I think I’ll have to make a vegetarian version of those hot dogs, too. Yum!

  47. Ashley @perfectleypeared on May 9, 2011 at 12:56 pm

I live only 2 hours from Tucson so I’m going to HAVE to come to one of your ZUMBA classes. 🙂 I’ve actually looked into getting certified! I think it would be an awesome way to get in a workout, meet some new friends and get a little extra cash. Did you go through the ZUMBA site, or just learned through being an personal trainer?

and yea – my boyfriend loves the Sonoran Dogs too – they have a similar place here in the Phoenix area and I can’t help but gag either…

  48. Carrie on May 9, 2011 at 12:56 pm

I’m from Iowa, so there are many possibilities when it comes to local food, but my first thought would be our pork tenderloins. They’re giant, breaded and fried and topped with only a couple pickles and ketchup and mustard. Okay, onions too if you’re feeling crazy. You know you have a good one if the tenderloin is twice the size of the bun, and it takes you four bites before you get to any bread.

  49. Beth on May 9, 2011 at 12:59 pm

Stationed in Germany – they are huge on hazelnut spread (think nutella). This was my dessert tonight: a bowl of super crunchy chocolate cereal nuggets filled with nutella… *sigh* I thought y’all needed something on here that sounded yummy 😉
