Burgers in a Nest

Heyyyyy 😀 Happy Indian Food Wednesday! Who’s celebrating? I know this curry-loving cat is (thanks to the twitter friend who sent me the link!)

I have plans for a legendary Indian dinner- hopefully I’ll have time to hit up the grocery store so it can come to fruition.

Last night while watching GLEE, I munched burgers in a nest.

Remember how my last batch of brown rice burgers were an epic fail??

These ones came out AWESOME!

Maybe because I used the recipe from Eat, Drink and Be Vegan instead of the one from my brain 😉 Heh heh.

burgers

While eating these burgers, I came to the realization that I have a girl crush on Dreena Burton, the author of Eat, Drink and Be Vegan. I know nothing about her, have no clue what she looks like, but her recipes warm my soul. That’s all that matters, right??

For those of you who aren’t familiar with the term girl crush, here’s the definition from the always profound UrbanDictionary.com:

1.
girl crush

feelings of admiration and adoration which a girl has for another girl, without wanting to shag said girl. a nonsexual attraction, usually based on veneration at some level.

Anywho, while I was eating the glorious brown rice burgers, I was snickering because the picture I was going to post would be this one:

When in reality, I burnt the dickens out of the bottom side.

Oops 😉

Blogging has definitely changed how I eat and present my food.

If I didn’t blog, I would:

-Pay no attention to presentation and would just plop whatever on a plate, scarf it down and get on with my day. It’s helped me to slow down, present my food in a more appealing way (also thanks to culinary school) and actually savor my meals. It’s always good to remember that we eat with our eyes first.

-Snack a lot more instead of having official “meals”. A bar here, slice of bread later, small salad, an apple, whatever I could scrounge up in between training appointments and teaching. It’s definitely made me focus more on having whole, complete meals.

– Probably eat the same thing every day. I’m totally a creature of habit and would have no prob eating the same thing for my meals and snacks every day. Another girl crush, Jessica Alba is rumored to eat the same thing every single day. Blogging has encouraged me to have more diversity with what I eat. Variety is the spice of life, yo 🙂

How has the blog world changed the way you eat?

And do you have a girl crush??

Jessica Alba is definitely up there, but Eva Mendes is number one 😉

eva

Well I’m off to shower my stinky post-Insanity workout face, PACK (for real this time! Haha) and then go to the eye doc before work. Ready, set, GO

xoxo,

Gina

Blogging has definitely changed the way I eat. I, too, am a creature of habit, and find that blogging encourages me to change things up! Also, I wouldn’t take nearly as much care to make things visually appealing if I wasn’t going to snap a picture of it. That said, I think taking the time to make my food look nice actually makes me enjoy it more, so its a win-win!

  2. Michelle @ Give Me the Almond Butter on April 21, 2010 at 10:31 am

I’ve always been more of a meal person than a snack person, and reading people’s blogs made me realize that it was okay to snack.
I have a girl crush on Emma Watson. I’m entirely jealous of her Burberry Campaign and she gets to hang out with Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint all day.

  3. Kailey (SnackFace) on April 21, 2010 at 10:32 am

Haha I totally pay attention to how my food is plated. I’ve also come around to setting out an entire meal instead of just eating something small, deciding what I want next, eating that, and repeating the process. I still do that on, say, Saturdays when I don’t photograph everything I eat.

I have a major girl crush on model Lara Stone. I just admire the fact that she’s not a twiglette! Well, and she’s gorgeous.

    • Fitnessista on April 21, 2010 at 10:47 am

lara stone is beaaaauutiful. as are you 🙂

  4. Shelly on April 21, 2010 at 10:32 am

Since I’m not entirely a “food blogger” I’d say that it encourages me to take a picture of my food before I dive into it (sometimes, when I remember) in case it turns out awesome and blogworthy. 🙂
I’d say my girl crushes include Pink (love her muscles), Reese Witherspoon, the blogger who writes Smitten Kitchen, and Drew Barrymore.

    • Fitnessista on April 21, 2010 at 10:47 am

      pink is RIPPED! 🙂

I think the blog world has definitely made me try to be a little more creative with my meals, and also try new things. I see so many great recipes all over the place with ingredients I’ve never used, but I’ll try anything once so its been a great adventure!

As far as my girl crush goes, I’d have to say either Natalie Portman or SJP…both are very different, but so great!

  7. Elle @ Acquired Tastes on April 21, 2010 at 10:35 am

Blogging has definitely changed the foods I choose to eat – I am more adventurous trying new products and restaurants which I like 🙂

I get girl crushes on other women I admire – usually women I know in real life – I just don’t think celebs are real 😉

I don’t blog, but I know READING blogs has definitely influenced the way I eat- in a good way! Especially since becoming vegan, I didn’t know what to eat! I’ve learned so many new recipes!! i’ve tried new foods I never would have taken a second look at because of food blogs! It’s also motivating knowing so many people are consciously eating healthy and sharing their stories-especially since the people physically around me are not health conscious. 🙂 Three cheers for food/healthy living blogs!!! 😀

  10. Jill@Quarterlifewellness on April 21, 2010 at 10:50 am

I love blogging because it just made me really aware. It also made me stop counting calories, and that has been a LIFESAVER.

My girl crush is DEF Scarlett Johansson. She has the most rocking body!! I mean she’s in shape but still extremely feminine. Love her, and so does every man I know!! (that must be a good sign) 🙂

  11. Katie on April 21, 2010 at 11:00 am

Yes! Blog reading AND writing has definitely changed the way I eat. I am a lot more meticulous about presentative and I have a lot more variety and creativity in what I eat.

As far as girl crushes go, mine change frequently. I love both Victoria Beckham and Kelly Ripa’s style. I agree with you, Eva Mendes is a beautiful woman but my hubby’s ex girlfriend looks a lot like her so I still kind of cringe everytime I see her. That’s catty, isn’t it?

    • Fitnessista on April 21, 2010 at 11:02 am

haha no, i think that’s totally normal 🙂

  12. Jenny on April 21, 2010 at 11:05 am

The blog world has opened my eyes to more nutritious choices, for sure!

My girl crush right now (body wise) is Jessica biel, but I loveeeee Lea michele for obvious reasons! Personality wise, there are two women I know who I would be really lucky to be anything like!

    • Fitnessista on April 21, 2010 at 11:14 am

i LOVE lea michele! her voice is seriously incredible 🙂

  13. Cara on April 21, 2010 at 11:07 am

My girl crush is def Kate Winslet or Kate Beckensdale (sp?) I guess I have a thing for Kate!!

Hey wait!! Are you guys coming to Vegas for the Skin Show??

    • Fitnessista on April 21, 2010 at 11:08 am

no ashley was going to go to it, but decided not to. it sounds like so much fun though!!

  14. allison @ livingoneday on April 21, 2010 at 11:11 am

yum yum YUM!! the burgers look fantastic!! must try. i had a girl crush (i called it my femme crush) on this girl when i studied abroad in south africa. she had super cool long dreadlocks and an awesome style. i saw her all over campus and i just wanted to emulate HER. nothin wrong with that!! and seriously…PACK!! hahaha i always do that. i say i will and i don’t! i actually have to pack tonight too – leaving for a wedding in florida on friday! have a GREAT trip to vegas girl!

  15. RhodeyGirl on April 21, 2010 at 11:20 am

Lady Gaga is my girl crush. I love her so much!

  18. Ian on April 21, 2010 at 11:35 am

Checking this during class always results in people’s glances at the pink backgrounds and foods, but I wonder what they were thinking with the ridiculous curry cat pic and the gorgeousness that is eva mendez at the end! haha made me laugh a little on the insde; thanks for that!

  19. Tracey @ I'm Not Superhuman on April 21, 2010 at 11:39 am

Blogging helps me be more mindful of living healthy, day by day. It’s a way to stay accountable. As for girl crushes, I’d love Jennifer Garner’s Alias body. Plus, she seems really cool and down to earth.

  20. Astrid on April 21, 2010 at 11:44 am

I look to blogs for the fun suggestions of new things to try. Because of blogs, I now have a Vita-mix and can make my own nut butter! That makes me happy.
My girl crush is definitely Brigette Moynahan. She was the tall thin woman in Coyote Ugly. Absolutely gorgeous in my opinion!!

  21. Lauren on April 21, 2010 at 11:44 am

I think the biggest thing I’ve noticed from blogging (and my family’s biggest complaint) is waiting to make sure I get a good picture before I eat. My sis gripes about always eating cold meals haha!

I also never knew how important lighting was and seriously long for daylight instead of my crappy kitchen lighting when I get done cooking dinner at 8 at night 🙁

  22. Megan @ Healthy Hoggin' on April 21, 2010 at 11:48 am

I’m totally a creature of habit, too! If I didn’t blog, I probably would eat the same thing every single day. Now, I try to only do it more than two days in a row. 😉

My girl crushes include Kelly Ripa, Gwyneth Paltrow and Jennifer Aniston. I’m inspired by their workout-ethics and love all of their styles, too!

Those burgers look awesome! I just got Eat, Drink, and Be Vegan for Christmas, so I need to try them soon!!

  23. Therese on April 21, 2010 at 11:49 am

I’ve done a few food blog posts on my SparkPeople page and plan to actually have my own REAL food blog up and running next week so I’ve had a taste of what it’s like to be a food blogger! I’ve definitely learned to present things nicely! Even my boyfriend jumps on the presentation bandwagon because he’s always afraid I’m going to show people what he makes! 😀 I also don’t snack as much and my portions have become smaller. All positives!!!

I have two girl crushes. One being Nigella Lawson, yes her food is fattening but how she LOVES the food she makes is awesome. She’s unapologetic about it and makes cooking sexy! My other is actually one of my professors! I admire her greatly and she’s just AWESOME! 😀

  24. Madison on April 21, 2010 at 12:11 pm

I definitely love Japanese curry more than Indian curry. Cute photos of cat with curry.

    • Fitnessista on April 21, 2010 at 12:42 pm

i had no idea there were different types of curry. i’m sure i would love japansese curry too, though!

      • allison @ livingoneday on April 21, 2010 at 2:50 pm

there is thai curry too! definitely NOT indian curry (which i hate…im SORRY!)

  25. Mama Pea on April 21, 2010 at 12:14 pm

I KNOW I wouldn’t be vegan if it weren’t for finding blogs. And now it excites me to know that I too am influencing how people eat!

Is it odd that I think I have more celebrity girl crushes than I do boy crushes? I too have a girl crush on Dreena (who happens to be quite pretty!), but also Rachel McAdams, Scarlett Johannsen, Julia Roberts and Lauren Graham, just to name a few. My husband’s either worried or very excited.

  26. Emily on April 21, 2010 at 12:31 pm

Hehe, I can definitely understand your Eva Mendes girl crush. I have a couple – one on Tina Fey and one on Ellen. They’re both so funny and strong. 🙂

    Your burgers look DELISH!

  27. Melissa (Melissa Likes To Eat) on April 21, 2010 at 12:43 pm

Blogging has changed the way I eat too!! I try to plate things nicely now and use nicer looking plates/bowls. I try not to have back to back repeat meals.
I think Beyonce is crazy hot. I used to feel that way about Jennifer Lopez but I might be changing my mind.

  28. melissa @ a lambs tail on April 21, 2010 at 12:48 pm

dreena’s writing a new book. here’s her recipe blog: http://viveleveganrecipes.blogspot.com/

i started blogging to be more aware of what im eating. makes me think twice about eating three snickers for breakfast, knowing that ill have to take pictures of it and post them.

i dont necessarily have a girl crush on zooey deschanel, i just want her closet and her hair!…..and maybe her voice.

Yes, there are probably lots of different curry types out there but I’ve only ever had Indian, Japanese and Thai. Japanese is my favorite though. I cannot get enough of that stuff. My favorite is Japanese veggie curry over brown rice. I could eat that all day long, served with little red pickles of some sort. *drool*

OMG- You would have flipped if you were in L.A. with me. The place we were staying at (with our friends who were house sitting) was in the Hollywood Hills. One Friday night a guy dressed in a tux knocked on the door and was looking for a party. He brought up the invitation and it was from Eva Mendes. We later found out that the party was 3 houses down!!! The sad part is that we didn’t get to go.
