Church Rebels

Hi friends <3 How are you? Hope you’ve had an amazing day so far. I *was* going to blog before my 6:30am shift this morning. To be real, I have no idea where that came from because needless to say, it didn’t happen. I was lucky to get to work on time, even though I’m still a zombie 6 hours later. Mad props to the people who can work early 😉

We had a little family get-together last night since it was my bro’s confirmation. We found out the hard way that “Starbucks is not allowed inside the sanctuary”, so Meg, Kyle and I had to enjoy our drinks outside before the ceremony began.

us

(outfit deets for Meg and I are on the *fashion page*)

The ceremony was beautiful, even though I was ROASTING the entire time –the sun was beating down on my face and I was fanning myself with an envelope I found in my purse. I’ve actually fainted during church before, back in middle school. Tucson heat is no joke and I was scared to relive those memories and make a huge scene again. Thank goodness it was bueno.

Afterwards, the fam and I went to La Parrilla to feast on delicious Mexican food.

la parrilla

(Signs that a place is legit = you can watch them make the tortillas FRESH. I swoon)

Usually when I go out for Mexican, I’ll decide in advance if it’s a “chip night.” I figured that last night wouldn’t be worth it since I had to wake up early and sleeping with a food baby is no fun. Then this was presented in front of me:

guac

I had about thirteen hundred chips with guacamole. NBD.

+ beans with no cheese

frijoles

+ green corn tamale with no cheese

tamale

Beautiful.

I’m actually on my lunch break right now, so I’m going to scrounge for something to eat, but I’ll see ya later today! <3

xoxo

Gina

Something to talk about: Fave Mexican dish! Also, have you ever fainted before? It’s actually the reason why my nose is slightly crooked- I fainted after a doc procedure.. on the tile. Ouchers :/

  2. Rachel on May 14, 2011 at 3:35 pm

Oh no! I’ve fainted twice and it’s such a terrible feeling. I can’t imagine waking up with a hurt nose too!

Favorite mexican meal…it’s gotta be the cheese enchilada meal with rice and beans. That’s what I get when I’m feeling naughty 🙂 I live in Texas so I’m sure our restaurants are a little different bc we’re more Tex-Mex but your dinner looks amazing!

  3. Julie on May 14, 2011 at 3:38 pm

I’ve never fainted, but did attend a wedding where a bridesmaid fainted. The bride looked SO pissed at her bridesmaid!

What drink did you get at Starbucks???? It looks so good right now!!

    • Fitnessista on May 14, 2011 at 3:39 pm

  5. alicia on May 14, 2011 at 3:40 pm

I’ve only fainted once, I was 17 at a show in San Fransisco (The Cramps if anyone cares), and being squished and the hotness must have gotten to me. The plus side, security carried me over the stage baracade and I was face to face with the singer!!!! swoon! Every since then, I can no longer make my way to the front of a show, I have to stay back or I feel light headed.

Favorite Mexican meal?? My grandma’s sweet tamales!!! OMG! Rock your face off! I remember literally eating 4 at a meal, so good.

  6. The Teenage Taste on May 14, 2011 at 3:40 pm

I’ve never fainted before *knock on wood*, but I’ve been witness to many people who have. Talk about scary!

  7. Destini on May 14, 2011 at 3:41 pm

WOW that makes me hungry! I have fainted before, and it was also in church. Orthodox church, incense and lots of ppl. Lucky for me there was so many ppl I apparently just fell on the person next to me.

  8. Kilee on May 14, 2011 at 3:41 pm

You look so pretty at church! I love, love, love mexican. Do margaritas count? 🙂 I usually roll with lots of sides: guac, salsa, beans, tortillas and rice. I fainted after taking a Niacin at work. Talk about embarrassing. Have a great weekend!

  9. Erin on May 14, 2011 at 3:44 pm

I love carnitas, but I think I could live off guacamole for the rest of my life 🙂 . Luckily, I have never fainted. I came very close once when I got overheated while I was working a part time job parking cars at an outdoor concert venue during the summer.

  10. Ali @ Around the VeggieTable on May 14, 2011 at 3:53 pm

Okay I’m feeling generous so I’m going to share my most embarassing moment since you just reminded me of it. When I was in high school, I wasn’t feeling well and we were in church on Palm Sunday (aka it was packed). When the service ended, we got up to walk out and I passed out in front of everyone. But wait, it gets worse. As I was falling backwards, my brother in law went to catch me, and as his arms reached out, he accidentally lifted up my my shirt AND my bra, and I unconsciously flashed the entire congregation. Mortification.

    • Fitnessista on May 14, 2011 at 8:54 pm

girl, that is horrifying. you probably made everyone’s church experience more exciting though 😉

  11. Allison @ Food For Healing on May 14, 2011 at 3:57 pm

i could go for some mexican food right about now!
I have ALMOST fainted before, it was in a dissection class in college, the dissection part didn’t bother me, so im not sure what it was, but all of a sudden i couldn’t hear anything and things started to go black. my teacher noticed and grabbed me and sat me down with my head down between my legs. I was fine after that! Not sure what happened that day. lol
I wish i had your weather! i’d love it, i like the heat.

  12. natalie on May 14, 2011 at 4:00 pm

congrats to your brother! i have fainted before – multiple times! maybe i should have been born in the victoria era. ; ) also, while i type this your sweet potato and black bean chili recipe is simmering in my crock pot. yummers!

  13. kelsey @ un-american in france on May 14, 2011 at 4:04 pm

Mmm! Your dinner looks delish! My favorite Mexican dish changes, usually between mole chicken and a salsa verde veggie burrito… but it all depends on the restaurant!

I used to have a pretty bad problem with fainting. The worst time was actually the first time I fainted… Check this out, my 7th grade choir was performing Christmas songs for a local retirement home. The choir teacher asked me to introduce our next song and mid-sentence, I passed out flat on my back, landing on my friend Stacey’s shoe. The teacher told everyone to back away so Stacey pulled her foot out from under me and my head slammed onto the concrete floor. One of the chaperones immediately took me to the school to be checked by the nurse. When I got the okay to rejoin the class, I met them at the pizza parlor we were having lunch at. When I walked in, they all said that they thought I’d died. I was mortified but fine!

  14. Adriana on May 14, 2011 at 4:07 pm

I fainted in the ER once. Not as a patient, but as a volunteer due to the fact that I had not eaten that day. To male things worse, it was in front of a mcdreamy tpe dr so it was totally embarrassing!

  15. Megan on May 14, 2011 at 4:18 pm

Tamales are hands down my favorite, especially when my mother in law makes them homemade! Swoon!

  16. Becca@Start Over From Scratch on May 14, 2011 at 4:20 pm

I have to get up for Culinary school at 5am Mon-Thurs. We don’t normally have friday classes but we did yesterday and I rolled over and it was 6:57! Needless to say I freaked out! And somehow got to class by 7:10, only 10 minutes late! I graduate next week and look forward to sleeping in a bit!
Your dinner looks awesome! Fresh tortillas and tamales are my fave!

  17. Lisa on May 14, 2011 at 4:21 pm

I love shrimp fajitas & grilled fish tacos. But, I’ll take any Mexican food. I’m still obsessing over your breakfast Rellenos. I’ve never fainted.

  18. Chelsa on May 14, 2011 at 4:32 pm

My favorite Mexican restaurant has an ensalada de casa that I get every time with a side of black beans, extra salsa and grilled chicken, fish or shrimp.

  19. Nicole @ Fresh & Fit on May 14, 2011 at 4:34 pm

I can’t go to a Mexican restaurant and NOT each chips! That takes crazy insane will power!

    • Fitnessista on May 14, 2011 at 8:54 pm

i can usually do it, but sometimes, i need some chips 🙂

  20. Lindsay Loves Veggies on May 14, 2011 at 4:41 pm

I fainted during a youth group meeting when I was about 12. It was completely moritfying. I guess it was just too hot and crowded in there, and I went down like a tree. Every once in a while I feel myself getting lightheaded and everything starting to buzz, and I will just sit down wherever I am and put my head between my knees. No bueno.

  21. Colleen @ The Lunchbox Diaries on May 14, 2011 at 4:43 pm

Mad props to you if you can ever go out for Mexican and NOT eat chips. That’s one of my favorite parts! Soft chicken tacos are also my go-to order. As we can see, it’s obviously not the healthiest meal on Earth, but I like to go out all out when I eat Mexican – it’s my favorite!

  22. Holly @ The Runny Egg on May 14, 2011 at 4:54 pm

I have never fainted but Jason actually did last week! He ended up bonking his head and had a big bruise 🙁

If there are chips and guac in front of me I will eat them all. NBD 🙂

  23. Rebecca on May 14, 2011 at 4:57 pm

I’ve fainted a few times, it’s no fun!

Yum, I love Mexican food! I grew up in Texas (still live here) and my cousins are in New Mexico, it’s funny how different Tex-Mex is from New Mexican’s version. Both are very good!

Probably my favorite thing to order is chicken fajitas, although I do love spinach quesadillas as well. And I can’t get enough salsa, especially the good hot stuff. I end up eating way too many chips, but if no one would judge me I could just eat salsa with a spoon!

  24. Kelly @ Laughter, Strength, and Food on May 14, 2011 at 5:15 pm

My favorite Mexican dish is honestly tamales! Yours looked so good! I just love the texture of them!
I have never fainted, but I came close after I had my wisdom teeth out. I was on like 5 different types of medication while eating practically nothing. My body wasn’t too happy with me!

  25. Averie (LoveVeggiesandYoga) on May 14, 2011 at 5:16 pm

Fainted, no. I haven’t. And whoa, that’s a story about you and your nose and fainting. I hope it was a one time thing 🙂

As for fave Mexican food…does chips + guac + margaritas count?

    🙂

  26. Errign on May 14, 2011 at 5:22 pm

Um, I fainted in January on a flight…and puked my very first (and probably only) Jamba Juice smoothie all over myself as I was coming to. Hot. Hahah.

I am actually craving Mexican now that I saw those pictures – yummm. There is NO good Mexican food around here!

I actually used to faint a lot! Especially in high school, and no one could ever really explain it. I would faint completely randomly, and when I was feeling fine too. I had all kinds of tests done and no one could explain it, but luckily I seem to have outgrown it.

My favorite mexican food is guacamole for sure. I actually had never had it until recently because I just assumed I wouldn’t like it, but when I tried it I was hooked! I crave it all the time now haha

  29. d barker on May 14, 2011 at 5:49 pm

i wouldn’t be eating anything out of that kitchen..its filthy!!

    • Fitnessista on May 14, 2011 at 8:53 pm

hahah it’s an open kitchen and is clean- the tools are older, but we’ve never had a prob w the food there

  30. Gina @ Running to the Kitchen on May 14, 2011 at 6:04 pm

I did faint once. I think it was low blood sugar after a workout a long time ago. Not fun!
That guac looks delish and worth every chip!

  31. Kristen on May 14, 2011 at 6:35 pm

I can’t believe you tried to bring Starbucks into a Church. I’m sorry but that made me bust out laughing. Ha! Also that tea looks so yummy. I have to try it.

I haven’t fainted before but I came close. After getting blood drawn and walking up to the front desk at the clinic I got really pale and basically fell into a wheel chair! Haha.

My favorite Mexican dish is ceviche!

  35. Laura J. on May 14, 2011 at 7:14 pm

I pass out cold whenever I get shots, haha.

I now have a huuuge craving for guacamole after reading this post! Mmmm I think I could literally be happy surviving off of chips and guac for the rest of my life. And maybe a little Sangria thrown in there too 😉

    • Fitnessista on May 14, 2011 at 8:50 pm

they have to put me on the “fainter table” to give me a shot or take blood 😉

  36. ellalinea on May 14, 2011 at 7:23 pm

I think I would be a zombie too if I had to start work at 6.30 am.. It happens sometimes If a shoot starts early but forntunately that doesn’t happen a lot 😉

  37. Beth on May 14, 2011 at 7:24 pm

I also fainted in church once! I was in high school, on vacation with my family and we were in this little church out in the country. My dad was totally a front row guy when it came to church, so there we were in the front row, no where near the doors. It was summer, so hot, no a/c in the church… hotter than blazes. We were sitting and then stood up and i just went over onto my dad. He picked me up and carried me out and put me in the car and turned on the car a/c full blast until I came to!

  38. Katie~ Run For The Bikini on May 14, 2011 at 7:28 pm

I fainted in HS once at a friend’s house after being in the hot tub (semi dehydration I think.) In front of everyone there I, without realizing it, got up from a chair in his kitchen, staggered into the living room and collapsed on a small wooden table (it broke). No there was not any alcohol involved.

The one other time I fainted was when I was sick and lying down all day, when I finally got up I got dizzy and passed out.

  39. Carla on May 14, 2011 at 7:29 pm

I love ALL Mexican food!!!!!! Cheese, tortillas, chips, guacamole, and beans…what’s not to love!?! Oh yeah…and let’s not forget MARGARITAS!! Before I dived head first into a healthy lifestyle (and when I ate meat)…I would have said a fried chicken chimichanga…with a side of chips and queso. But these days there is a shrimp fajita salad that has become my absolute fave!!! (I still indulge in the chips and queso!:))

I used to faint all the time, it was awful. I actually had some sort of disorder that I outgrew but it was pretty terrible. Kept me from playing basketball for a few months. And I fainted at the eye doctors the first time and the doctor freaked out and raon out of the room! Who does that??!

    • Fitnessista on May 14, 2011 at 8:49 pm

I fainted once in high school after I got home from a really hard track practice!

  45. elizabeth on May 14, 2011 at 9:39 pm

The look on your bro’s face is priceless. What a ham!

My favorite Mexican food is similar to yours: fresh tortillas with butter (they used to make these on the streets in san diego and I ate 50,000,000), tamales, enchiladas in mole sauce… guacamole… oh and carne asada. Or pork carnitas. Can I have 10 favorites?

  46. Jenn on May 14, 2011 at 10:00 pm

I have to ask… why the fishy face always? Is it an inside joke or something? lol Either way, you are still adorable! 😉

My relatives used to own a Mexican restaurant in colorado and they passed on amazing recipes for enchiladas and green chilli to me that I absolutely love! I think my favorite part of any Mexican restaurant though is the fresh tortilla chips and guacamole! 🙂

When I was younger I used to get cramps so bad that I’d faint on a regular basis. It was so awful, I’m definitely glad that phase of my life is passed.

PS. Your tweet that the Pilot is coming home made me smile today! You deserve to have your man back with you AND get a good night’s sleep! 😀

I’m a teacher, and I once passed out cold in the middle of the corridor whilst talking to a colleague during lesson changeover. Hordes of kids approached from either end of the corridor while a colleague leapt to my aid. In absence of really knowing what to do, he hoisted my legs up and propped them on his shoulders.
Another colleague stood at the doors preventing kids from getting through and one of them asked what the problem was.
She replied, with dry understatement, ” I’m not too sure, but it looks like Miss has her legs wrapped round Sir’s neck”.
Oh, how we laughed when I eventually came to….

  50. Courtney on May 15, 2011 at 12:41 am

I love chips and guac! Yumm
Yes I have fainted, no joke, at the clinic on base here back in 05 while discussing birth control/during my pap. Not kidding at all! They wouldn’t let me drive myself home afterwards either. I had to call my husband at work and exlplain why he has to come drive me home at 9 in the morning.
