Hobby of necessity (giveaway)

*This giveaway has ended as of 12/16 midnight. Stay tuned for more giveaways soon! Winner’s info at the bottom of this post, along with the details on the lotion bar I’m so obsessed with ๐Ÿ™‚ Thank you so much to everyone for entering!********************************************************************

For me, there are two types of hobbies:

1.) the kind you really, really love and

2.) the necessary ones.

When I was younger, I decided I was going to knit. Some of my friends could knit, I thought it was cool and decided to give it a whirl. It lasted about 4 seconds. I have the patience of Bella waiting for chicken and knitting wasnโ€™t something I needed a reason to do. Itโ€™s hot in Tucson and my beanies and scarves get worn about twice a year.

The hobbies I really enjoy: teaching fitness, Zumba, cooking, reading, dance, etc

Necessary hobbies: photography and scrapbooking

Photography is a necessary hobby for the blogโ€ฆ I donโ€™t really like it, or know what the heck Iโ€™m doing. I take a picture in โ€œPโ€ mode, auto-adjust the colors if it looks weird, and post. Some people get warm and fuzzy talking about aperture and shutter speed, and alas, I am not one of them. Scrapbooking has become another necessary hobby since the Pilot has been deployed 3 times and we always make scrapbook pages, and since we have a little one on the way, Iโ€™ve taken to online scrapbooking. The day we got our maternity photos back, I made photo books for madre, nana and baby, and had them shipped out. Was it fun? Not at all. Am I glad I did it? 100%.

I could see the same thing happening with the lotion bars I was trying to figure out how to make.

lotion bar

I had a sliver left, needed to replenish the stash, and couldnโ€™t get a hold of the amazing woman who makes the lotions and soaps. So, I headed to the health food store for ingredientsโ€ฆ. and then she called me back. Thank goodness making lotion bars didnโ€™t have to become a necessary hobby ๐Ÿ˜‰

I ordered an extra one for a lucky blog friend <3

To make the giveaway a little sweeter, Iโ€™d also like to share my #1 pregnancy must-have with the winner:

snoogle (2)

A snoogle!

The bonus about this giveaway is that you donโ€™t have to be expecting a little one to enjoy. Everyone could use a rich, buttery, lotion bar made with real ingredients and the comfiest body pillow ever invented.

Congratulations to the winner!

For those of you who were curious about the lotion, I talked to the woman who makes them today to make sure it was cool to share her info, since she doesnโ€™t have an Etsy shop or anything like that. She makes AMAZING products (lotions and soaps) and my fave is the bitter almond lotion bar. You break off a piece, heat it up with your hands and rub it on ๐Ÿ™‚

Hereโ€™s her email address if youโ€™d like to order something from her:

bbilleaudeau@vtc.net

Her name is Giselle and she can ship in the US, in the winter, as the bars will melt in the summer heat.

Favorite hobbies: running, workout/meal planning (totally love making a plan!), and writing. I have a love/hate relationship with cooking. Sometimes I super enjoy it, other times I just want it to cook itself. ๐Ÿ™‚ No little ones yet–hubbers and I just started trying.

Giveaway aside, I’d love to know who makes that lotion bar!

  21. Darien on December 15, 2011 at 9:50 pm

A necessary hobby for me…online gaming! When both my hubby and I were military (he still is, I am not) we were stationed half a country apart. He is a big time gamer and you run out of things to talk about on Skype. You gotta do what you gotta do- I ended up liking it and still play once in awhile!

  22. Brittany on December 15, 2011 at 9:50 pm

Hobby i enjoy is baking and a necessary hobby is school work. I am still in high school so i dont have any kids yet but I am looking forward to being a mommy. (I just have to find the right guy.)

  23. Ashley @ Granola Grrl on December 15, 2011 at 9:50 pm

My favorite hobbies are reading and exercising. Unfortunately, I fall asleep more often than not when I’m reading (no matter how amazing the book is)! I never fall asleep exercising, but I definitely have trouble fitting it in now that my treadmill is busted ๐Ÿ˜›

I hate to admit it on a food blog, but as of right now my necessary hobby is cooking. I have the time, but I have so many other things to fit in that meal-planning and cooking with fresh ingredients can sometimes take a backseat. (I also don’t own a dishwasher, which is something that factors into the equation.)

The Snoogle looks so amazing. We’re planning to conceive within 1.5 years, so the thought of having something to cuddle with is comforting ๐Ÿ˜‰

  24. Emily on December 15, 2011 at 9:51 pm

I love napping, sleeping, and snoring. JK about the last two. ๐Ÿ™‚ I love napping, shoes, and my boyfriend/family. Man my boyfriend is going to hate if I win this – but I’m going to LOVE it!

Favorite hobbies: reading, singing, photography, cooking and baking, and this is weird, but I really love making homemade laundry detergent. My little ones are in Heaven now, but I still think of the due dates as special. February 14, 2012 and June 10, 2012. It’s going to be tough to celebrate two different due dates next year, but I hope to do something to make it really special, because I know it will make them happy.

  31. Emily Schneider on December 15, 2011 at 9:55 pm

As a newlywed, you can probably guess one of my favorite hobbies, wink wink! (This hobby could lead to the use of that pillow quite soon!) All kidding aside, I love to play tennis, knit, run, and ski! It would be rockin’ to win that pillow because my hubbie works crazy hours as a surgical resident, so I am alone lots of nights. Would love “someone” to cuddle with when he sleeps at the hospital.

  32. Cel on December 15, 2011 at 9:55 pm

My fav hobby is writing short scripts…it’s fun to create characters and a whole, other life!

  33. Jennifer on December 15, 2011 at 9:56 pm

My hobby is getting fit. Not one thing in particular does “it” for me all the time but I really enjoy pushing the limits with weights, Zumba and spin for fun cardio, running when I’m in the mood. I LOVE doing fun activities with my man (husband), trying out whatever he is loving at the moment (usually mountain biking).
We have a 5 year old and a 2 year old, both boys. I’ve really enjoyed reading your pregnancy journey and can’t wait to hear about her arrival ๐Ÿ™‚

  34. Logan on December 15, 2011 at 9:57 pm

I am an “old” mom, compared to many of your readers, as my “baby” will turn 21 (YEARS) next month. Wow! I don’t feel old enough to have an adult child! As far as my hobby, I guess the things that bring me the most joy are working in my yard, creating beauty with plants. Anything that gets me outside is the best for me.

  35. Jen @ luckandfunny on December 15, 2011 at 9:58 pm

My favorite hobby is wakking and playing with my dogs! Nothing better.

  36. Brittany on December 15, 2011 at 9:59 pm

I love to teach my first graders! I enjoy hiking, spinning, hanging out with my husband and dogs! I also love surfing blogs for new recipes. I am getting a dehydrator for Christmas and have started making raw foods!
We don’t have kids yet but we’re looking forward to that. This giveaway is amazing!! Meanwhile I’ll live vicariously through you. Can’t wait to see your baby :).
    Happiest holidays!

  37. Jannifer on December 15, 2011 at 10:00 pm

My favorite hobbies are cooking, reading, running, and yoga. I also knit some but, living in Texas, I have to give most of my scarves and things to relatives in colder states!
I’ve been eyeing the Snoogie with envy!

  38. Heather from NC on December 15, 2011 at 10:00 pm

Cooking, reading and my newest hobby, Crossfit! I am like you; I do not enjoy knitting or crafting with my hands…total drudgery. I seriously can barely sew on a button. We have 4 human kids…17, 15, 14, and 12. Our son is 14…the rest are girls. Help us.

  39. Stephanie on December 15, 2011 at 10:00 pm

Zumba is a new hobby! Running and yoga fluctuate between ‘in love’ hobbies and necessary hobbies. Another necessary hobby right now? wedding planning aka sending out save the dates! I know I will be happy when they go out, but getting them out? dragging my feet is an understatement ๐Ÿ™‚

  40. Shaina on December 15, 2011 at 10:00 pm

My hobbies are pretty much all fitness and nutrition related – I LOVE trying new recipes and coming up with my own. It makes staying healthy so much more fun! I’m due on June 5th with our first baby. ๐Ÿ™‚ I would lurve one of those lotion bars….can’t have Daddy coming home from deployment to find me covered in stretch marks now can we?

  41. cathy@1970kikiproject on December 15, 2011 at 10:02 pm

Hmm, some hobbies I enjoy are reading (especially blogs!), experimenting with makeup and hair styles, and eating Mexican food (haha that’s probably not a hobby but I do it often enough)! A necessary hobby for me is probably studying (I start medical school next year)! I’m not pregnant but my cousin is due May 7th and I would love to throw in some extra special gifts with her Christmas presents!

  46. Maria@healthydiaries on December 15, 2011 at 10:04 pm
