Hobby of necessity (giveaway)

*This giveaway has ended as of 12/16 midnight. Stay tuned for more giveaways soon! Winner’s info at the bottom of this post, along with the details on the lotion bar I’m so obsessed with 🙂 Thank you so much to everyone for entering!********************************************************************

For me, there are two types of hobbies:

1.) the kind you really, really love and

2.) the necessary ones.

When I was younger, I decided I was going to knit. Some of my friends could knit, I thought it was cool and decided to give it a whirl. It lasted about 4 seconds. I have the patience of Bella waiting for chicken and knitting wasn’t something I needed a reason to do. It’s hot in Tucson and my beanies and scarves get worn about twice a year.

The hobbies I really enjoy: teaching fitness, Zumba, cooking, reading, dance, etc

Necessary hobbies: photography and scrapbooking

Photography is a necessary hobby for the blog… I don’t really like it, or know what the heck I’m doing. I take a picture in “P” mode, auto-adjust the colors if it looks weird, and post. Some people get warm and fuzzy talking about aperture and shutter speed, and alas, I am not one of them. Scrapbooking has become another necessary hobby since the Pilot has been deployed 3 times and we always make scrapbook pages, and since we have a little one on the way, I’ve taken to online scrapbooking. The day we got our maternity photos back, I made photo books for madre, nana and baby, and had them shipped out. Was it fun? Not at all. Am I glad I did it? 100%.

I could see the same thing happening with the lotion bars I was trying to figure out how to make.

lotion bar

I had a sliver left, needed to replenish the stash, and couldn’t get a hold of the amazing woman who makes the lotions and soaps. So, I headed to the health food store for ingredients…. and then she called me back. Thank goodness making lotion bars didn’t have to become a necessary hobby 😉

I ordered an extra one for a lucky blog friend <3

To make the giveaway a little sweeter, I’d also like to share my #1 pregnancy must-have with the winner:

snoogle (2)

A snoogle!

The bonus about this giveaway is that you don’t have to be expecting a little one to enjoy. Everyone could use a rich, buttery, lotion bar made with real ingredients and the comfiest body pillow ever invented.

Congratulations to the winner!

For those of you who were curious about the lotion, I talked to the woman who makes them today to make sure it was cool to share her info, since she doesn’t have an Etsy shop or anything like that. She makes AMAZING products (lotions and soaps) and my fave is the bitter almond lotion bar. You break off a piece, heat it up with your hands and rub it on 🙂

Here’s her email address if you’d like to order something from her:

bbilleaudeau@vtc.net

Her name is Giselle and she can ship in the US, in the winter, as the bars will melt in the summer heat.

Those lotion bars look magical! I love to do things like make cards and knit/crochet when I can sit still long enough.

If everything goes according to plan, I will be due Summer 2016 🙂 haha.

  2. Lyndsay on December 15, 2011 at 10:48 pm

I used to LOVE taking pics and scrapbooking, but now that we have a little one, I get so caught up in moments, that I completely forget about the camera! A hobby that I love also happens to be a necessity:cooking! I love trying to new recipes and creating delicious, healthy meals.

I have a 19 month old daughter and hopefully things will come together so I can get pregnant again by the end of next year! I laughed when you posted that pilot said he was burning your snoogle after Baby comes because I STILL sleep with my body pillow 19 months later. (though when I was preggo I used two-one on each side-because I hated trying to roll over and reposition the pillow when I was exhausted and didn’t want to use up my extra energy adjusting pillows!) Anyway, I think bot the lotion bar and snoogle would be amazing!

  3. Amanda on December 15, 2011 at 10:48 pm

My favorite hobby is decorating and crafting. I would have to agree that photography is my least favorite necessary hobby. I am just not good at it and I don’t really have a desire to improve.

I’m currently expecting – our first baby! – and am due April 15th. Tax Day baby!

  4. Emily on December 15, 2011 at 10:49 pm

Is reading blogs a hobby? That sounds lame, I also like cooking/planning recipes, playing the piano, reading, and walking on the beach. I’m due in April!

  5. Michele on December 15, 2011 at 10:49 pm

#1 hobby is cooking, born out of being a poor grad student that can’t afford a lot of “fun’ things. I still have to eat, right? So I just found ways to make it fun 🙂

  6. Stephanie on December 15, 2011 at 10:50 pm

I think I’m the queen of abandoned hobbies…pasta maker…dehydrator…plants in general lol! But I’d have to say my favorite hobby I keep up is shopping (does that count) and cooking (just not homemade pasta) 🙂 the hobby I dislike doing is Christmas cards, but they are a great keepsake not only for receivers but for me as well! I have a 2 yr old fur baby 🙂

  21. Britt on December 15, 2011 at 10:59 pm

I kinda feel like my hobbies fall into both categories – working out, cooking, studying nutrition (school), biking, etc. Sometimes they feel more fun and other times they definitely feel more necessary!

  22. Blake @ Blake Bakes on December 15, 2011 at 11:01 pm

Favorite hobby: Baking! Easily, no competitions really. Necessary hobbying: Reading. I do love to read, but reading nonfiction is a necessary hobby I’m developing for when I (fingers crossed) get accepted into graduate school. No pregnancy or kids for me, but I just found out that my sister is 12 weeks pregnant! First grand baby for our family.

  28. Jessica g on December 15, 2011 at 11:07 pm

I really like running. Not because of running high, but because I have an incredible group of friends that I run with. Going for a run is often the only chance I get to see these people. A for kids – none yet. The hubs and I are eagerly awaiting a positive stripe on the test. Until then, lots of hopeful and wishful thinking.

  29. Rachel F on December 15, 2011 at 11:08 pm

    my boyfriend, patrick 🙂

  30. Meagan N. on December 15, 2011 at 11:08 pm

I’m a jack of all trades and a master of nothing, ha ha. I enjoy taking all sorts of classes or trying new projects. Then once I get the hang of something I usually move on to another “hobby.” Cooking is probably the one hobby that I am continually interested in and seems to be something I work at and do all the time (probably mostly out of necessity, but if I have to do it I might as well be good at it).

I have two kids. My daughter just turned four and my son is two. I love ’em to pieces. Someday we’ll have couple more… lol.

I’m envious that you have no stretch marks. I tried 100 different lotions and potions and used them regularly. I was free and clear until about 33 weeks. Then they came fast and furious. Lol. It’s probably mostly your genetics… but if I hadn’t tried then I would have always wondered if I could have kept them at bay. At least I know I tried, ha ha ha.

  31. Kim on December 15, 2011 at 11:10 pm

  36. Heather on December 15, 2011 at 11:16 pm

I’m currently in the search for some hobbies. I graduate with my bachelor’s degree this Saturday and now I actually have time for some! I’m hoping to pick up crafting and start reading again. I don’t have any kids but my fur-baby is 4 years old this month.

  37. Alexa on December 15, 2011 at 11:19 pm

I originally was thinking pilates would be listed under ‘fun’ hobbies, but then i realized that it can fit into ‘necessary’ too!

i dont have kids yet, just turned 20 =], but my godson is 6, and I claim him as my own when i take him out 😉

  38. Danielle on December 15, 2011 at 11:20 pm

  40. Amy on December 15, 2011 at 11:22 pm

Wow, this makes me realize how much time I spend at work. The only hobbies I currently pursue are running and working out. But I do like to read and catalog recipes I cut out of magazines (I rarely follow the recipes, I just like to collect them!) I would love to win and tell the boy what I won. I think he would semi-freak out to know they are pregnancy related!

  41. Carrie on December 15, 2011 at 11:23 pm

I’m like you; I can stick with a hobby for about 15 minutes or until I get frustrated, whichever happens first. So, my “hobby” is exercising!

  42. Rachel on December 15, 2011 at 11:24 pm

Reading and playing the piano are my hobbies. I enjoy them until I’m forced to do them. Like after I finished my degree I didn’t read any books for a few months. Too much textbook reading!

  43. Leah Odell on December 15, 2011 at 11:24 pm

I love cooking! It always soothes me when Im feeling anxious and the best part is that others get to enjoy your creations. Reading is another favorite hobby of mine, I definitely have moments like yours when I just HAVE to read one more chapter. Sometimes when I can’t sleep I’ll read my kindle under the covers to help me fall asleep. Im due with my first on March 13th!

  44. Amanda on December 15, 2011 at 11:26 pm

  49. Kaitlin on December 15, 2011 at 11:34 pm

My fave hobbies are definitely running and reading. The necessary ones? cooking and studying!

I’m a grad student so I don’t have kids quite yet, but the lotion bar would be great for my newly preg college girlfriend who is hating her stretch marks!

    take care, gina!
