I’ve been hacked

[ok, not me, but my teeth]

Heyyyy 😀 How are ya? Hope you’ve had a great day so far <3 Loved reading your comments about eating plans and also the ones on today’s family post 🙂

Today was a mixture of things- lots of greatness, but I also getting hacked at during a dental appointment kind of put a damper on the day.

At least the eats were good 😉

Favorite Larabar everrrrrrrrr

larabar

and the return of black bean spaghetti!

spaghetti

[brand info is *here]

I love black bean spaghetti because it tastes like the real thing, but only has two ingredients (black beans, water) and 20g of protein per serving. It just looks a little scary 😉

It was amazing with wilted spinach, marinara sauce, a blanket of nutritional yeast and red chili flakes.

The brand of marinara sauce I used was “Mom’s” brand – it has whole cloves of garlic and entire basil leaves.

spaghetti (2)

Swoon.

So about the dentist appointment…

I was due for a cleaning and it was my first time going to a Tucson dentist after going to the one I LOVE in Valdosta. I got hacked. Literally. She got a spot that I felt in my soul. I got through it, but am appreciating the beauty of choice the fact that I never have to go back there.

The weather has been super hot and muggy lately, so I’m going to try working out at night to see how it goes. The prob I have with working out at night is that after a long day, it’s hard for me to find the energy to have a great workout. If I take or teach a class at night, I’m totally fine- I thrive off of group fitness energy 🙂 I usually prefer working out in the mornings – I get up, get er done while I’m refreshed, and then start my day.

On the schedule for tonight:

-TurboFire HIIT 25 workout- I’m going to watch Allie to keep it low impact and wear my HRM

-Weights

Also, I have some bananas that are screaming to be made into banana bread.

bananas

I better listen to them 🙂

See ya in the morning!

xoxo

Gina

Something to talk about: Now that summer’s here, have you been working out earlier than usual, or waiting until nighttime? How many times a week do you take group fitness classes?

*****Thanks so much to my friends at Redbook Magazine for the shout out in this month’s issue! <3

      no-thank goodness!!!

  2. Brittany @ Itty Bits of Balance on July 12, 2011 at 9:38 pm

Working out at night is SO difficult for me, but when I work all day I have no other choice! My secret– I never let myself think of my workout as an optional part of my day, so it almost always gets done 🙂

    • Fitnessista on July 12, 2011 at 9:41 pm

me too- it’s just something i have to do, like brushing my teeth or showering. it’s part of the routine

  3. Priyanka on July 12, 2011 at 9:39 pm

ah..I was tricked by the title too! I am working out in the evenings too, its getting crazy hot out here.

  4. Ashley on July 12, 2011 at 9:40 pm

I loove banana bread! I make a great..”nonhealthy” version. I work out at normal times..just slower paced runs now!

  5. kate on July 12, 2011 at 9:41 pm

ooh I need to make banana bread asap <3

  6. Danielle C. on July 12, 2011 at 9:41 pm

I am the same way, it is hard to find the motivation and energy to work out at night. I love getting up, having something to eat and then get my workout in.

Major bummer on the dentist, it took me a few years to find a good one so I’m sticking with her!!!

  7. Suzi @ Confessions of a Fitness Instructor on July 12, 2011 at 9:43 pm

I used to have a brutal dental hygenist, thank goodness I don’t get her anymore, it was like she was trying to floss my brain! :S

I’m home from the Zumba convention now – if you email me (suzi@confessionsofafitnessinstrcutor.com) your mailing address I’ll get your little nugget’s first zumba outfit sent out in the mail to ya! 😀

    • Fitnessista on July 12, 2011 at 9:45 pm

      yay!!!! thank you! 🙂

  8. Erin on July 12, 2011 at 9:47 pm

Ok that pasta looks super yummy but I could not find the brand, I clicked the link too!! Am I blind?!?!?

    • Fitnessista on July 12, 2011 at 9:52 pm

no, i put the wrong link there! should work now- sorry about that <3

  9. Amber L on July 12, 2011 at 9:48 pm

I feel the same way about group fitness classes – I LOVE the energy and can take them any time of the day. But if I want to go for a run or do some weights I have to do it in the morning or by the evening I feel sluggish. Mornings are cooler for me than the nights anyway.

I take 3 group fitness classes a week – cardio kickboxing, spin, and a sculpt and burn class 🙂

    • Amber L on July 12, 2011 at 9:49 pm

oh and I used to take Zumba, but now the times of classes don’t work out with my schedule . . .total bummer!

  10. Emily @ The Swallow Flies on July 12, 2011 at 9:50 pm

It is way too hot to run anytime other than first thing in the morning. However, I’m also digging the sweet tan lines I get if I go in the brutal afternoon sun. Decisions, decisions! 🙂

  11. Claire @ ThinkingClairely on July 12, 2011 at 9:51 pm

When summer hits, I take full advantage of the group fitness classes at my gym. They offer classes at lunch, and since summer is typically a down time at the office, I head to the gym mid-day. This is great because I can come home after work and enjoy a full evening, knowing that my workout is done! Group fitness rules.

  12. kara on July 12, 2011 at 9:52 pm

are you secretly trying to get more people to read your family posts?? (the link to the spaghetti brand info is actually to your “Making Strides” post) not that iiii have any problem with that! =)

so you do turbofire and weights in one “session”? i just finished Ripped in 30 last week and i felt a big increase in my upper body strength (i have basically zero normally). i started turbofire yesterday and am planning on TRYING to follow the schedule that they give as best as i can ( = i will definitely skip days or do yoga or something not as high impact sometimes), but i’ve started to worry that i might lose some of that upper body strength i just worked so hard for! any good suggestions on how to handle all that?

    • Fitnessista on July 12, 2011 at 9:53 pm

haha no i am a ding dong and linked to the wrong post. i fixed it!
for turbo, i followed the cardio schedule but not the toning schedule- i did my own weight routines in conjunction with turbo for cardio

      • kara on July 12, 2011 at 10:09 pm

hmm, seems i’ll have to do a bit of it to see what my options are and then put together my own schedule. thanks for your quick reply!!

  13. Holly @ The Runny Egg on July 12, 2011 at 9:53 pm

I can’t make up my mind — a few days a week I’ll get up early to workout and then some days I wait until evening — I just got back from a run and it is almost 9pm. I don’t usually like to workout so late but it is so blazing hot all day long.

Ugh — just reading “dentist” makes me cringe.

  14. Faith @ For the Health of It on July 12, 2011 at 9:53 pm

I keep seeing that black bean pasta around the blog world, but I can’t track it down in real life! Suck a bummer because the nutritional stats are undeniable!

    • Nina on July 13, 2011 at 9:16 am

Faith — you can find it at Whole Foods — in mine, it was in the Asian cuisine section! Good luck! 🙂

What a great shoutout!!! Love it!

  16. Janelle on July 12, 2011 at 9:56 pm

I just joined a 90-minute 5:15am body pump class when my normal wake up time is 7:15. So far, it is brutal but it feels so good to have a workout over by the time you normally get up in the morning!

  17. Liz @ Tip Top Shape on July 12, 2011 at 9:56 pm

So exciting that you’re mentioned in Redbook!!! I would be freaking out! lol Those blueberry muffin larabars are pretty fantastic. My favorite is still the ginger snap, though. I love that one.

  18. tasha on July 12, 2011 at 10:00 pm

I don’t like to workout in the evenings. For me, if I don’t get it done in the morning, there’s a good chance it won’t get done. So, I rise and shine at 4:30a and walking in the gym doors by 5a. It’s nice because my workout is complete and I am showered and dressed before my houseful of kiddos awake. 😉
I love group fit classes — I’m a self-proclaimed class rat, ha!! I take 6 classes a week regularly and often find myself working in a few others, depending on my schedule, my friends, and the instructors, hehe!

That’s awesome that you’re in the magazine! Congrats!

  20. kari on July 12, 2011 at 10:09 pm

hey Gina, Im glad you are doing well. i may have to go to Whole Check and find the larabars and the bean pasta. i love to cook black beans all the time and they are so good for us. i eat them with quinoa and corn tortillas.

  21. Caroline on July 12, 2011 at 10:10 pm

Thank you so much for inspiring me to write my own fitness blog! As an instructor and trainer, I love learning new circuits, great upbeat songs and of course all of the nutritional advice 🙂 Ps- I am also gluten intolerant so I am loving the g-free goodness you provide! Thanks and happy blogging!

  22. Laura (Cookies vs. Carrots) on July 12, 2011 at 10:12 pm

    Wow, what an awesome shout-out!

When it is super hot out, I am a lot more likely to get it done. After a long day at the office, stepping out into the hot, humid air kills any motivation that I had to workout!

  23. Ashley on July 12, 2011 at 10:28 pm

I have to get my workout in before noon or it will never happen. I even try to trick myself when I skip my morning workout and put on my exercise clothes so I will work out in the evening, but no such luck, I usually end up eating dinner and going to bed in said clothes without working out!

  24. allison @ thesundayflog on July 12, 2011 at 10:55 pm

yikes. no fun! i need to make a dental appointment stat!! lately ive been trying to get my workouts done in the morning (3.5 weeks til my first triathlon! ahhhh), because we’re in a heatwave now, and evening workouts are way too hot. i also have zero motivation after a 9 hour day at the office, and my nights are normally spent working on baking projects, so morning it is!

  25. Maddie on July 12, 2011 at 11:08 pm

Gina, I did your Moan-day Ab burner from yesterday (i’m running a day behind!) and yipes! what a swift kick in the pants! But, it was over in a few minutes, and i watched it while watching the final minutes of the last episode of Sex and the City which was on re-run on Style today. great way to occupy me from bursting into tears!!

Can you make Moan-day Ab burners a regular appearance!?

  26. Gillbear on July 12, 2011 at 11:14 pm

I go to a bootcamp during the week but lately Ive been going to the 5 PM class instead of the 7 AM class. This is only due to my messed up sleep schedule from being unemployed. It is sooo much nicer earlier on in the day and I don’t like waiting all day to be tortured ;P

  27. Mindy on July 12, 2011 at 11:22 pm

Gina – I’m curious about the black bean pasta’s protein content. I don’t understand how it has so much protein but little carbs and calories because one serving of black beans has only 6g of protein and about the same carb content and about 100 cals? I’m not exactly doing the math but 20g of protein seems like a lot for just that much black beans. Although I’d love to try it since I eat a vegan diet and want more protein.

  28. J3nn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) on July 12, 2011 at 11:52 pm

Black bean spaghetti is amazing! I picked up a package of mung bean, too, by the same company but haven’t tried it yet. I made it Mexican style with corn, diced tomatoes, cilantro, lime juice, cheddar cheese, and a dollop of Greek yogurt. It was incredible!

  29. Allison @ Food for Healing on July 12, 2011 at 11:52 pm

there are so many larabar flavours i need to try, but i live in a smaller city and there is NO variety, it sucks.
I made banana bread and banana muffins tonight, the house smells so amazing!

  30. Desi on July 12, 2011 at 11:54 pm

I am always up to try new pasta’s I will be looking for the black bean version. I am a total black bean addict. Sorry that your appt today was less than stellar.

As for summer workouts I have been trying to keep them at the same time but I am not sure that is the best plan. Too bad the gym only offers Zumba at one time. It is too hot in there I got a migraine tonight. Not the most fun I have ever had working out. I am ready for summer to be over. Or for the gym to get a functioing AC.

I’m so sorry to hear about your teeth! That is such a bummer when that happens. Teeth pain is the WORST! Did you ever have braces at all? That is pain, I tell you. I like to go to yoga class, it works any time of day! They have air conditioning! I have been trying to get up earlier to work out to, more so that I have an evening, instead of work, work out, dinner, bed time!

I’m definitely a morning worker outter…I absolutely love getting a good sweat on first thing in the morning…it really gets me energized for my day and puts me in a good mood! And I love group exercise classes and feed off of that energy too…I take about 4 spin classes and 1 bootcamp class a week…love it!

  34. Julie (A Case of the Runs) on July 13, 2011 at 12:08 am

My last dental was not great, either. They told me I had very very early periodontal disease, even though I brush twice a day and floss… agggh. I got scaled and such… not pleasant.

  35. Julie on July 13, 2011 at 12:49 am

I take 2-3 fitness classes a day like Zumba and Turbo then yoga and Pilates or Body Pump and some other strength training class then a stretch class. I couldn’t do workouts by myself. I’d get bored.

  38. Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga on July 13, 2011 at 2:13 am

Congrats on your Redbook mention! That’s SO AWESOME girl!

Ok the WORST dental experience of my entire life was the one I went to in Phoenix for the 9 mos we were living there. I am OCD, i.e. totally anal, about my dental cleanings and go every 6 mos. I floss 2x a day at least, I have never had a cavity and I take really good care of my teeth and have seen tons of dentists in my day…and my AZ experience was horrible. I feel your pain. The woman I had was I swear, into S & M. Just awful.

Hey, at least you endured the pain, no drugs. Maybe it was God’s little test in advance of the birth 🙂

  39. Namaste Gurl on July 13, 2011 at 3:17 am

I need that black bean spaghetti NOW 🙂 Looks better than good ole’ regular pasta all the way!

  40. Rochelle on July 13, 2011 at 4:01 am

I have to work out in the mornings, otherwise it just wont happen. Im pretty content working out alone, but i have joined a great class called ‘tead ‘n shed’ its basically speed and incline intervals on the treadmill which i could technically do alone, but i just love the class and the instructor and it pushes me with all the other people there.

  41. Ryan @ Aloha Appetite on July 13, 2011 at 4:16 am

I love working out in the morning because it makes my day feel much more energized, but I do also end up working out at night when time gets too cramped. On the weekends, my workout usually comes in the form of hiking, so there is little way to try and beat the crazy Hawaiian sun! 😉

  42. Kristie on July 13, 2011 at 7:59 am

I jumped on the group fitness van last summer, and I love it! It’s so motivating in that, once I’ve signed up for a class, I have to show up–or pay for the class anyway and be ashamed! So I always show up. I do Pilates 6 days a week, Bikram yoga 4-5 days a week, and Anusara yoga 3 days a week. And I LOVE it all so much that I am starting Pilates teacher training next month!

Re: morning workouts: I have to walk my dog around 7:30-8 in the morning no matter what… even though I would love to sleep in instead! It’s way too hot to walk her later, even if she didn’t provide extra *encouragement* to get up out of bed.

  43. Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin on July 13, 2011 at 8:01 am

I usually work out after breakfast around 9 am. Sometimes it’s already too hot to run outside, so if that’s the case I just go to the gym. 😛 I’m not a fan of early morning workouts because I need a full breakfast in my belly to workout properly. And my energy levels plummet after dinner time, so there’s no way I could work out at night!

I really need to find that black bean spaghetti! I love that it’s such a great source of protein!

  44. Megan on July 13, 2011 at 8:11 am

I’m the same! Working out at night is hard after a long day, but with these 90+ days, it’s kinda necessary. To give me more oompf to push through, we’ve been making it a family affair… late night soccer games and runs.

  45. Nicole on July 13, 2011 at 8:28 am

I had a similar experience at the dentist today, too. I got a different hygienist than usual, and she dug and dug and dug in my gums. Yes, I’m guilty of not flossing, but her technique left a lot to be desired. I seriously thought I might cry.

  46. Yolie @ Practising Wellness on July 13, 2011 at 8:46 am

Congratulations on your Redbook mention, that’s fantastic, you must be so excited! So sorry for the dentist “incident”…these things happen but they are never fun. Oh my goodness, that black bean spaghetti looks awesome, but the bit that takes the biscuit? The marinara sauce. Whole cloves of garlic? Yes please! 😀
I’m the same with morning workouts – way prefer them. Hope your session went well! xyx

  47. Sarah on July 13, 2011 at 8:53 am

    Hi Gina!
Sometimes I have the feeling people become dentists just because they like being mean….;)
I prefer working out in the morning when it’s hot and then I can go swimming in the lake at night!
I have two requests for you: could you give us your banana bread recipe, as I know it’s going to be delish, and could you do a post on Body Pump? I’ve just begun and love it, but I would love to have the opinion of a trainer.
    Thanks!

    Sarah

  48. Anna on July 13, 2011 at 9:09 am

Are you making gluten-free banana bread? Can you put your recipe up for us please? Thanks!

  49. April @ Grits and Granola Bars on July 13, 2011 at 9:22 am

Does that black bean spaghetti really taste like normal spaghetti noodles? I’ve heard it’s a bit funky tasting!

  50. Brandi @ The Vitamin Bee on July 13, 2011 at 9:39 am

Congrats on Redbook! That’s so awesome!

I think I may be the only person who doesn’t mind going to the dentist. I spent a bunch of time there when I was a kid because I broke my front teeth (several times).
