Mini Me-als

Hiiiii 😀 How are you? I’m excited to have so many new virtual walking buddies– let me know how it goes and if you feel a difference in your day 🙂 Also, thank you so much to all of you who are supporting Katie’s bake sale for Japan! I promise to hook up my macaroon goodie package winner something fierce 😉

So this post title has two sources:

1. This mini meal:

bella

The Pilot and I call each other (and Bella) a wide variety of nicknames, all of which are totally random and ridiculous.

Somehow Bella —> Bell —-> Beal —-> Meal.

I have no idea how it happened, either 😉

2. My fuel of choice: mini meals 🙂

sir fries

(Stir fry with tomatoes, onion, broccoli, kidney beans, cumin, garlic, cayenne, sea salt and pepper)

Since spring has sprung-ish, I find myself wanting smaller more frequent meals. I usually prefer this style of eating, as it keeps me super satisfied and my metabolism cranking/ When it’s chilly outside, I crave larger meals to warm me up 🙂

Lately, it’s been roasty toasty in Tucson –we hit the 90s last week!- and for the past month or so, I’ve been enjoying 5-6 smaller, yet deliciously satisfying meals throughout the day. I say “mini” because it sounds cute, but always make sure each smaller meal has enough calories to support my activity level for the day.

Some examples:

Protein pudding

pudding

(1 container goat’s milk yogurt, 1 scoop vanilla Sun Warrior, almond milk to thin it out, cinnamon and 1 square dark chocolate with sea salt)

Wraps:

wraps

(today’s was a brown rice tortilla with organic chicken, farmer’s market goat cheese and veggies. They’re just as lovely with hummus, beans or eggs)

Perfect protein pancakes

pancakes

Carrots with hummus and raw sunflower seeds

carrots and hummus

(Tip: did you know 1/4 C sunflower seeds has 8g of protein?! Word)

Amazeballz

ballz

I’m about to get ready for dance, but before I go, check out this video if you’d like your heart to melt 🙂

(I’ve watched it at least 4 times already)

See ya in the morning with a giveaway 🙂

xoxo

Gina

  3. Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine on April 5, 2011 at 9:46 pm

I’m definitely more of a mini meal person! I eat three larger ones, and three smaller ones. I need to eat every few hours!

  4. lauren alysse on April 5, 2011 at 9:52 pm

those wraps and the stir fry look amazing.

i think i prefer bigger meals with fruit/veggie snacks in between 🙂

Haha my nickname for my bf is similar to bellas – his name is jeff which somehow turned to jarfy which somehow turned to marfy. Uh don’t tell himbi told that though lol!

  6. Katie~ Run For The Bikini on April 5, 2011 at 9:53 pm

It’s really funny/ coincidental that you just posted this because usually I do the 3 meals thing but just this past week I’ve been doing more mini meals. Not really 5-6, but I have an early lunch and a later lunch. I’ve found when I’m making sure to fill up on veggies I have to do more meals because they fill you up at first, but they are lower in calories so I need more sooner.

    That video was amazing!!!

  7. Krystin on April 5, 2011 at 9:53 pm

My boyfriend and I have two cats, Zoey and Riley who have a few nicknames each.. Riley’s main nickname is ‘bubbas’ and Zoey’s are ‘princess’ (typical) and ‘pants’.. so sometimes she is princess pants, sometimes just pants.. not sure how that happened but hey I can totally see how Bella came to be ‘meal’ haha 😉 I’m pretty sure we call them by their nicknames more than their given (?) names 🙂

  8. Lindsey on April 5, 2011 at 9:57 pm

Definitely more of a mini-meal type gal. My kids eat all.the.time, so I roll with them. I tend to have a large-ish breakfast before my workout (not a lot of food, just higher calorie stuff) along with lots of lemon water, post workout shake, then a spa meal (lately, tuna salad, some spelt crackers and a small bunch of grapes)…then we all nap (yay!)…and after naps, we pretty much snack all afternoon on healthy stuff (raw veggies and hummus and fruit mostly). Keeps my metabolism cranking all day long and provides enough fuel to keep up with the kiddos.

  9. Hannah on April 5, 2011 at 9:57 pm

hhahaha love the song but the dog for sure made that video a hit!!
i like mini- meals but do not really have the schedule for it..

  10. Brooke on April 5, 2011 at 9:58 pm

I’ve been trying to do the mini-meals for the past few weeks but I’ve been having a hard time. I feel like I’m either making them TOO mini, or else too large to be considered minis anymore. Thanks for showing what you’ve been eating. It’ll help me put together some minis on my own.

As for the name I call my pet…her name is Baby Kitty but I call her Furburger which I then (roughly) translated to español to be Furburguesa. Yeah, weird I know. 😉

P.S. – I lived in Phoenix for 6 years (I’m currently in Dallas), all the talk about Tucson makes me miss AZ so much. I’ve been having all sorts of dreams about it since I started reading your blog!

  11. aj on April 5, 2011 at 9:59 pm

Oh my gosh. I have a cat named June. I had a boyfriend once who called her “June-pants”. Don’t ask me why, he just thought ending everything in pants was funny. Soon it just became “pantsy” then “Pantsy dancey” and now often she is referred to as “Dancey” . Yeah, its weird.

  12. SmileCrave on April 5, 2011 at 10:02 pm

That dog in the video had me CRACKING UPPPPP!!! Love your mini eats… sooo yummy looking! 🙂

  13. Nicole on April 5, 2011 at 10:04 pm

    I’m definitely a three-square-meals gal. I’m a creature of habit and it’s just what I’ve always done.

Our dog Cody has quite a few ridiculous nicknames. He’s a catahoula, which is the Louisiana state dog. Since he’s a Cajun boy we call him Coco Robicheaux, which has morphed into Coco, Coco-velocity and Cokaloke. I recently found out that there is a Louisiana legend about a naughty boy named Coco Robicheaux who is kidnapped by a werewolf. So. Appropriate.

  14. Rebecca on April 5, 2011 at 10:04 pm

I definitely do mini meals…So much easier if you are running around for work or errands…usually dinner is bigger. My husband and I call our dogs ookies, noodles because one of them is tall and skinny and ewoks because they look kinda like them. I think its true we call them by their nicknames instead of what we actually name them!

  15. Sana on April 5, 2011 at 10:12 pm

mini meals = snacks, superr yummm!!!!

  16. Hannah on April 5, 2011 at 10:21 pm

That cover of What the Hell is so much better than Avril’s!! Damn they’ve got good voices!

    • Fitnessista on April 6, 2011 at 12:46 am

      for real, huh? they’re amazing

  17. Running Betty on April 5, 2011 at 10:21 pm

Which melted your heart more, the boys sharing the keyboard, or the puppy in the background?!

    • Fitnessista on April 6, 2011 at 12:47 am

mostly the boys, but the puppy was cute too!!

  18. Bex on April 5, 2011 at 10:22 pm

Right now I’m eating about 7 mini meals a day. At work I always get made fun of because I’m ALWAYS eating!

  19. Laura @ Meet Virginia on April 5, 2011 at 10:25 pm

I love the video! The guys have awesome voices! I had to laugh at the little dog jumping around in the back. 🙂 I always eat 5-6 mini meals. I can’t imagine only eating 3 times a day!!!

  20. Esther on April 5, 2011 at 10:26 pm

wow, i love that cover of what the hell. I actually prefer it to avrils.

  21. Ellen @ Undercover Runner Eats on April 5, 2011 at 10:29 pm

    I’m definitely a mini-mealer

  22. Jennifer on April 5, 2011 at 10:32 pm

I do more 3 meals a day but when I was pregnant I did 6ish meals.

Loved the video! We have a cat that we now call Stick-doo or Sticky which evolved from originally Kit-kat to tikken to chicken then to chickey. We originally named her Kit-kat so not to call her something else, kit-kat was kind of a nickname, so funny how that happens 🙂

  23. Suzanne on April 5, 2011 at 10:35 pm

Gah! I love the picture in the previous post of the Pilot jumping! So fun!

Bella told me she wants to star in a video post soon…..

Three square. Not even. Two smallish squares, and then a mammoth rectangle. Then sleep.

  24. Moondancerjen on April 5, 2011 at 10:45 pm

My nickname for my dog, Lucky, is Doodle! Lol! Totally makes since right? I’m into 5 mini meals like you.

  25. Alexandrina @ The Cardio Queen on April 5, 2011 at 10:46 pm

Love, love, love that cover!! That dog in the background is hilarious! haha.

  26. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) on April 5, 2011 at 10:46 pm

I am the queen of a 4-6 hour block usually late at night after I am home from work where I fuel. Big time. All the rules about eating late, eating carbs, eating big portions rather than spacing out smaller meals…I break every single “rule”. I just eat when I am hungry and I am hungry.. late! So i go to town then 🙂

I saw Katie do a special post about your prize pack. That is so nice of you! I plan to give far more than just the item I am donating, too. I can’t believe everyone’s generosity who is bidding. It’s SUCH an awesome thing. The kindness of strangers to donate to the cause makes me smile.

    Have a great nite, Gina!

  27. Sable @ SquatLikeALady on April 5, 2011 at 10:46 pm

I do minimeals! Much easier on my poor digestive system, plus with my training it’s easier to fuel that way.

My pets have never had weird nicknames (though we did have a cat we named Muffins….lol) but my husband calls me his “little chicken.” I don’t know why. I don’t look like a chicken, don’t act like a chicken, and don’t eat chicken, but it’s pretty darn cute when he says it so it’s stuck.

  28. Maren on April 5, 2011 at 10:48 pm

yes, very legit. The best part about that video is the dog going psycho in the background! haha!! too cute!

  29. Maren on April 5, 2011 at 10:52 pm

oh and I named my cat Jude and I only call him Juderz.

  30. Kelly @ Laughter, Strength, and Food on April 5, 2011 at 10:53 pm

I like to eat small frequent meals. I am usually always hungry so it just works out better that way.
I call my lab Bub. His name is Jet, but I started calling him Pup, which somehow turned into Bub. 🙂

  31. tavolini on April 5, 2011 at 10:53 pm

hahaha, great cover!! the dog cracked me up and man, it really makes me appreciate the kids who work hard to make something beautiful, just for beauty’s sake.

Hope all is going well with you, girl 🙂

    • Fitnessista on April 6, 2011 at 12:45 am

so true, it really is amazing!
      thank you- you too!!

  32. Katie @ Nourishing Flourishing on April 5, 2011 at 10:57 pm

I would be embarrassed to tell just how many “mini-meals” I have each day! 🙂 Total grazer.

  33. Ashley on April 5, 2011 at 11:31 pm

I go back + forth with the mini meals. Sometimes I feel like it works and sometimes I feel like I’m eating too much and still have slight hunger all the time. I can’t figure out which system works best for me. Always a work in progress!

  34. Liz on April 5, 2011 at 11:32 pm

Hi Gina!! I just started reading your blog about a week ago. Love!! My hubby is allergic to wheat so I totally appreciate the GF recipes. Question about your wrap today, which brand did you use? It seemed to hold together better than the ones I’ve had (I just moved to a trader joes free land *sob*). I’m also curious to know why you eat GF. Are you allergic to wheat? Gluten? Celiacs?

    <3 Liz

    • Fitnessista on April 6, 2011 at 12:44 am

it’s trader joes- sorry you don’t have one near you :/
i’m gluten sensitive. not allergic, but definitely sensitive so i stay away from the most part

      • Liz on April 6, 2011 at 1:10 pm

Yeah, I’ve been told I’m gluten sensitive too, but it’s pretty easy for me to stay away since my hubby is more so! My sister lives near a TJs and I am thinking of having her ship me some of the brown rice tortillas! haha

  35. Sam on April 5, 2011 at 11:34 pm

Ok..that was the hottest video ever :))

  36. Lauren on April 5, 2011 at 11:34 pm

I love that cover!!! What a great way to end the day 🙂

  37. Heather on April 5, 2011 at 11:34 pm

The guys are really good in that video but I was so focused on the dog in the background! Too funny! 🙂

  38. Candace @ infitation on April 5, 2011 at 11:41 pm

I’m all about the mini meals! Mine usually involve some sort of nut butter and a fruit or veggie. I think some of the more filling smoothies can count as mini meals too. I’ve never realized how much protein sunflower seeds have – I’m a fan of pumpkin seeds which have 9 grams per serving, but their pretty caloric with 160 cals per serving. I’ll have to try sunflower seeds as a replacement!

  39. Mama Pea on April 5, 2011 at 11:43 pm

I am doing the 5-6 meals a day thing. It’s actually a ton of work and time that goes into eating, but my body thanks me for it!

I now want a puppy and a piano.

Oh, and I call Pea Kitty, “Damn cat!” a lot.

  40. Dani on April 5, 2011 at 11:45 pm

Haha I call one of my bulldogs ‘the sheath’ goes like this: Millicent>Millie>mylie>myelin sheath>the sheath.

    The other I call flank:
    Frank>flankety flank>flank

  41. Tyler on April 5, 2011 at 11:50 pm

In college I made my sorority sister’s call me Ty Pablo. Tyler = Ty. last name started with a P = Pablo. I was drunk. It stuck.

My husband’s last name is Soendker (pronounced Son-ker). His friends started calling him Zonker, which got shortened to Z. I will never call him Z but it’s funny when all of his buds call him Z. He even got his Army pals to refer to him as Z.

We all need funny nick names.

  42. Stephanie @ Life, Love & Inspiration on April 5, 2011 at 11:50 pm

I call my dog stupid nicknames like “poo-poo bear”, I’m not really sure where that evolved from…:)

As far as meals go, my eating lately has been whack–I drink a homemade latte in the morning, sometimes make time for lunch, and then am starving when I get home, so I eat a huge dinner and usually a healthy-ish snack after that. I think that is probably the worst way to eat, ever. I just haven’t made time to do meal planning and a big grocery shopping trip.

  43. Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife on April 5, 2011 at 11:52 pm

mini meal thang for sure!! I love keepin’ my metabolism humming….

  44. Allison @ Food For Healing on April 5, 2011 at 11:55 pm

oh the nicknames that fly around up in here! haha
i roll with mini-meals and snacks, I can`t eat too much in one sitting because it just makes me sick.
    i *heart* bella 🙂

    • Fitnessista on April 6, 2011 at 12:42 am

      she hearts you too 🙂

  45. J on April 6, 2011 at 12:01 am

Aww, Bella is such a cutie. My little brother could never say my name when he was young, so he called me “E” which turned into “Eh” and then “Ish” and finally, “Dish.” No one can understand why my family calls me Dish! Hehe

And yes I do pretty much exclusively mini-meals! This allows me to eat all the time, which I enjoy!

  46. Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table on April 6, 2011 at 12:02 am

I love mini-meals… sadly, i do it more so I get to try more creations than I do for health-purposes. Inner fat kid strikes again. LOL! 🙂

  47. Juliene on April 6, 2011 at 12:02 am

I love the pet nicknames. We have 2 dogs that have a ton of nicknames. Our dachshund gets called Schnitzel or Brown football but her name is Sophie. Our mix’s name is Remington but he gets called Remikins or Poopface McGee and I couldn’t tell you why. I can’t wait for spring to arrive in Maryland it was cold here today!

  48. Alicia on April 6, 2011 at 12:05 am

That video was AMAZING. I do more mini meals but depends on the day too.

  49. Stefanie @thenewhealthy on April 6, 2011 at 12:09 am

Mini meals are my favorite way to eat! That way I never allow myself to get super hungry! I had no idea that sunflower seeds had that much protein! Awesome! 🙂

  50. Felicia (A taste of Health with Balance) on April 6, 2011 at 12:33 am

that video is awesome, and i was laughing the entire time because of the dog 🙂 i am all about mini meals!
