Reader’s Request: Guilty Pleasures

Hey everyone! Hope you’re having a great morning so far 😀

For today’s reader’s request post, I had no idea what to write about, so I did what any resourceful girl would do: consulted my Tweeps 🙂

image

The last couple of reader’s request posts have been educational, so I thought it was high time for a fun one 😀 For other non-nutrition and fitness related posts, check out Skincare and Interior decorating.

So here we have it… my guilty (and not so guilty) pleasures 😉

Guilty Pleasures

1. Reality TV

Don’t get be wrong, I love watching intellectual shows just as much as the next person.. but sometimes, I want to watch something requiring minimal thought process.

Particularly my girls:

Jersey Shore:

jersey-shore-cast  (Source)

I just can’t look away. It’s funny though because the first time I saw Jersey Shore, I thought it wasn’t real. The pilot had to convince me that people actually dress like that 😉

2. Shopping

I online shop like the best of them, since shopping opportunities are scarce in Valdosta. Amazon, eBay –I’m like a hawk.. at the last minute, I’ll swoop in, bid and WIN- Express and Sephora get hit up pretty often but my major obsession are these:

seven(Source)

JEANS!!! Sevens are my favorite and I have quite a few pairs… I justify this expensive obsession because the quality is amazing and since I’ve been the same size for the past 5 or so years, they last quite a while.

Purses

You’ve seen my closet 😉

closet4

coachie

*Sigh* The only justification for this one is that a hawt purse just makes an outfit so much better 😀

Not-so-guilty Pleasures

1. Raw Cooking (or un-cooking, rather)

017

roon

I love testing out my own recipes for raw creations. Whenever I get free time, chances are that I’ll spent it making up a new recipe.

2. Reading

I’m always reading something and try to balance out the fluffy stuff with the substantial stuff.

Here’s the current “fluff”

Substance:

image

This one has taken me a while to get through.. after every section, I stop and think about what I just read and how its applicable to my life. It’s a wonderful and very interesting read.

Aerobics classes:

image

I’m like an addict when it comes to aerobics classes. Maybe it’s my dance background, but if I could, I’d take a couple of classes every day. When we lived in North Carolina (and I wasn’t working), I took yoga, step and spin everyday, just because I enjoy the classes so much (and yes, I ate a lot more food to fuel this activity!). The thing is, in Valdosta we don’t have a lot of aerobics classes nearby –unless they’re on base, or I teach them- so it’s probably for the best. When I was doing so much aerobics, my body was in a catabolic state and despite my constant snacking, I was burning muscle away. So even though I was having the time of my life, I was also the “smushiest” I’ve ever been… just goes to show that more isn’t always better when it comes to cardio and aerobics.

Ginger Chews!

GingerChewsFinalLg (Source)

I can’t believe I haven’t posted these on the blog yet!

I LOVE THESE LITTLE THINGS!

My friend Ashley introduced me to Ginger Chews when we went to Ft Lauderdale. Those little bites of ginger goodness stole my heart and I’ve had at least one every day since then. I try to have less than two, as they’re sugary little things, but they taste like sweet and spicy heaven.

So those are my guilty and not-so guilty pleasures. I tried to write about things not related to food (as we all know my love for almond butter, millet bread, mary’s crack, red wine, maca and goat cheese is ridiculous) and hope ya’ll enjoyed this reader’s request!

If you have any reader’s requests, please send them my way! fitnessista at gmail dot com

I’m off to:

-Weights with Ashley

-Make macaroons

-Train a couple of clients

-Feast

and

-Get ready for pilates and Zumba

Have a wonderful day!

Gina

What are your guilty and not-so-guilty pleasures??

Aw, love this! I am also addicted to reality TV and shopping, but more shoes than purses. I have over 200 pairs = OBSESSION!!!! I love reading, too – Chelsea’s books are so funny. I would lay in bed reading them and just laugh out loud. My hubby eventually read them, too since I laughed so much. 🙂

  4. Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg on February 3, 2010 at 8:43 am

I LOVE Chelsea Handler!! I read that book on an airplane, and I was laughing so hard the people around me were staring 🙂

    Love ginger chews, too!

Not so guilty: walking laps around the grocery store before i put anything in my cart… i can see what looks good AND get cardio in 🙂

  7. kalli@fitandfortysomething on February 3, 2010 at 8:54 am

Love the ginger chews and jeans!

  8. Cassie @ A Very Busy Mind on February 3, 2010 at 8:54 am

OK, I love Jersey Shore, too. Ah! It’s the worst/best! Hehe. I also like Teen Mom.

    • Sara @ Activegal on February 3, 2010 at 9:03 am

I was up late last night watching the Teen Mom Reunion Special 🙂 Well “late” for me means 12 am.

  9. Katie on February 3, 2010 at 8:57 am

I totally share the guilty pleasure of trashy TV- it makes gym time go by so fast though! Starbucks would probably make my list, as well as any good wine or cheese shop.

  10. Sara @ Activegal on February 3, 2010 at 9:02 am

JEANS!! I completely agree with you there. I’m obsessed, WAY TOO OBSESSED! I think my favorite kind are Sevens and True Religion. It’s just something about the way they fit me! I love in NC, what city were ou in when you lived here? Thanks for sharing all your guilty pleasures, they were fun to read!

    • Fitnessista on February 3, 2010 at 9:26 am

we lived in fayetteville for a little while before they moved us to georgia. i loved nc!

  11. Maria on February 3, 2010 at 9:02 am

I’ve been reading your blog for a while now, and I have to say that you really keep me going as far as healthy living is concerned. When I feel stuck in a rut with exercise or eating, I just read your blog and look through your food pics to get right back on the horse! I even bought a dehydrator that I can’t wait to try out. My boyfriend is starting to eat healthier and exercise too (although still not consistantly). We are even going to Jiko (at Animal Kingdom) for my birthday because he saw that they had lots of veggie choices and goat cheese!

If you have time, I’d love to know what other healthy places there are in Orlando.

Thanks for having such a great blog!

    Thanks for the blog!

    • Fitnessista on February 3, 2010 at 9:25 am

      hey maria!
      thank you so much!
check out cafe 118 (in winter park.. it’s an all-raw cafe, they’re closed sunday though), and seasons 52 (my all-time favorite)

  12. Island Girl Eats on February 3, 2010 at 9:10 am

I thought the same thing when I watched Jersey Shore for the first time last week. I have never heard people talk like that, or dress like that. It’s like a car crash – you can’t help but look to see what is happening!

I am the same with books, something serious, something light, etc. What did you think of the book The Lovely Bones? I really wanted to read it, but then I saw the movie last week. I didn’t really like it to be honest and I was really looking forward to it.

    • Fitnessista on February 3, 2010 at 9:24 am

the book is WAY, way, way (!) better than the movie and very different. i think you’ll like the book so much better… i loved the book and couldn’t stand the movie

  13. Lauren @ Eater not a runner on February 3, 2010 at 9:15 am

Guilty pleasure? Definitely crappy tv (and blogging at work!!)

  14. Paige (Running Around Normal) on February 3, 2010 at 9:31 am

Reality TV is such a guilty pleasure of mine! SO ashamed of watching The Bachelor lol
And I hear you on the reading. I am ALWAYS reading one educational and one leisurely book at the same time 🙂

  15. Run Sarah on February 3, 2010 at 9:32 am

Jeans are a huge guilty pleasure for me too, as well as handbags. I’m not really a shoe gal! Love reality TV (mostly medical dramas) and chocolate!!

    • Fitnessista on February 3, 2010 at 9:32 am

i’m not a shoe girl, either which is probably a good thing 😉

  16. Danielle (Coffee Run) on February 3, 2010 at 9:32 am

We have a lot of the same guilty pleasures- Shopping, the Kardashians, Are You there Vodka it’s me Chelsea (hilarious book 😀 )
I would have to add Cosmo magazine on there!

  17. Dee on February 3, 2010 at 9:34 am

    i love sevens!

    those ginger chews look interesting!

  18. Jenna @ EatingGreen,StayingLean on February 3, 2010 at 9:38 am

Aw, this post is so great! Sad story: I bought Sevens off of ebay a couple summers ago and LOVED them…maybe even loved them too much cuz eventually they ripped 🙁

Guess I’ll have to get new ones…**sigh** haha

    • Fitnessista on February 3, 2010 at 9:41 am

      haha, what a tragedy 😉

  19. Lisa on February 3, 2010 at 9:39 am

I’m guilty of watching Millionaire Matchmaker, Foodnetwork, collecting too many cookbooks, and reading tabloid magazines. Not so Guilty: enjoy reading, cooking, and going to movies.

  20. Jessie on February 3, 2010 at 9:46 am

I secretly love the Kardashians too.

  21. laura dishes on February 3, 2010 at 9:47 am

I’m addicted to celebrity gossip (People, Us Weekly, TMZ) and reality tv- The Bachelor, Real Housewives, Teen Mom, Jersey Shore, Hoarders, etc. It’s really ridiculous!

    • Fitnessista on February 3, 2010 at 9:48 am

      ahhhh i love hoarders too!

  22. thedelishdish on February 3, 2010 at 9:48 am

i have such a weakness for reality tv…gotten so bad i try to not let myself turn the tv on when i get home (it doesnt work tho!) jersey shore is especially hilarious…my friends are even having a Jshore party this weekend. GTL till then!

  23. Karyn on February 3, 2010 at 9:49 am

oh i love this post! i always have substance and not-so-substance books going on too, although the not-so-substance have been tabloids haha

  24. Rachel on February 3, 2010 at 9:50 am

I heart the Kardashians. They are so entertaining. My boyfriend makes endless fun of me when I watch them, but I don’t care 🙂

I’m actually afraid to watch Jersey Shore, for fear that might like it!

My guilty pleasure is definitely expensive groceries…I love Whole Foods and would probably spend every paycheck there in its entirety if I wouldn’t then be homeless 🙂 I feel like, if you’re going to splurge, it might as well be on good, wholesome, healthy things you put inside your body, right? Or, ya know, organic cookies 🙂

  25. Haleigh on February 3, 2010 at 9:58 am

Seven jeans seriously last forever! I have had my pair for the last 5 years and they look barely worn. My guilty pleasures are shoes and Private Practice type tv shows.. love the drama!

  26. emily on February 3, 2010 at 10:07 am

Guilty pleasures? Hmm…iced coffees, makeup products that I NEVER USE! and magazines. Lord, why do I buy so many magazines? My guilty pleasure TV show is definitely True Life. Ahhh!

  27. Brittany on February 3, 2010 at 10:11 am

Haha I LOVE the Kardashians too…definitely a guilty pleasure.

  28. MySensei on February 3, 2010 at 10:14 am

I’m a sucker for reality tv too! And theres nothing guilty about loving the Kardashian’s! 🙂 Love them and all their craziness.

  29. Alison on February 3, 2010 at 10:14 am

I thought Jersey Shore was like a reality tv “mockumentary” at first. They’re one klassy bunch.

  30. Sara on February 3, 2010 at 10:19 am

Purses are DEFINITELY my number 1 guilty pleasure- when I was 16 I worked at a retail store for two weeks over my winter break and used all of that money towards my first Dior purse that I bought in Paris on a schoolweek…ever since then, I’ve been accumulating a lovely little collection of necessity purses- Jimmy Choo, Gucci, Burberry, Prada, Coach, Marc Jacobs, Valentino, Chloe etc…my eye is on a classic Chanel now…haha we’ll see about that though 😉

    • Fitnessista on February 3, 2010 at 10:34 am

a girl after my own heart 🙂

  31. Jenny on February 3, 2010 at 10:22 am

I’m not a reality TV fan, but some specific shows are my guilty pleasures–Keeping up with the Kardashians, Kendra, and The Millionaire Matchmaker! Can’t ever turn them off!

I would also say that blog-reading/commenting is a guilty pleasure..whenever I have a few minutes of free time, you can find me reading all the awesome blogs out there and trying to keep up with my Google Reader.

  32. sarah on February 3, 2010 at 10:38 am

LOL… I can’t stop watching Jersey Shore either. It’s like a train wreck. It’s also nostalgic, because I grew up around guidos and guidettes 🙂 However, these people take the cake! What I especially love is how they are actually attending red carpet affairs now.

  33. Mo @MommyRD on February 3, 2010 at 10:45 am

Guilty pleasures: reading blogs (way to much,)vino, Lululemon, Monster Lo Carb energy drinks (I know, I know, terrible for me, but love the taste so much)and gossip magazines.
Non-guilty pleasures: Kombucha, Amazing Grass chocolate, playing peek-a -boo and taking long walks with my daughter, Thursday Bootcamp at the gym.

  34. Heather (Heather's Dish) on February 3, 2010 at 10:51 am

my guilty pleasures are reality TV shows (anyone else love the Hills no matter how bad it gets?), and gossip websites/mags. Not so guilty pleasures are oatmeal, cooking, and the Namaste Yoga show on fit TV – it’s short, sweet, and to the point 🙂

    • Fitnessista on February 3, 2010 at 11:08 am

i love namaste yoga, too! i dvr it whenever its on 🙂

  35. Adrien on February 3, 2010 at 11:20 am

I’m a student, and I love to shop.. always filled with guilt around that- damn student loans

I also love buying different lotions (and potions) and am always on the hunt for something to make my skin better [enter suggestions if you have any].

And fitness DVDs- I have about 20 and it’s still growing- and I’m a personal trainer (eye roll)- I usually order them on line after a glass or two of wine!

  36. Lily @ Lily's Health Pad on February 3, 2010 at 11:24 am

Exercise, particularly group fitness, is my non-guilty pleasure. Like you, I could group exercise all day long!

Guilty pleasure is definitely shopping. I only bargain shop though…so maybe it’s ok….

  37. Sarah on February 3, 2010 at 11:24 am

aww, Sevens! Those were my first designer jeans I bought when I lost my first pounds. They fit me SO well. I also wear Joe’s a lot, too. They are great for a girl with a booty. 🙂

  38. Katie on February 3, 2010 at 11:27 am

I really love how our guilty pleasures lists are pretty much exactly the same, right down to the Ginger Chews! I found those at Whole Foods a couple of years ago, and they are seriously addicting. I have to keep them in my car, because if they were in my purse (which is a Coach-ha ha) I would eat the whole bag at my desk.
PS Did you hear Pauly D from Jersey Shore is dating Farrah from Teen Mom? Scandy…

  39. Ann K on February 3, 2010 at 11:34 am

So, I tried the week three workout, after doing weeks one and two, and I’m not feeling the results the same as I did the past two weeks. There were’nt weight suggestions and there weren’t rep suggestions. I’m still loving week two but don’t want to get too burned out! Any tips to make the moves more challenging?

    Thanks,
    Ann K

    • Fitnessista on February 3, 2010 at 11:52 am

      hey ann,
sorry about that! make sure to do weights and reps that are challenging for you. i’d do 10-15 reps of each exercise.

      • Ann K on February 3, 2010 at 3:58 pm

Thanks! I’d love to see more challenging versions too, not like you’re busy or anything!

Thanks so much for posting those, for those of us strapped for cash these are amazing tools.

I’m leaving the country for six weeks abraod soon and I would love to see some tips on working out (REALLY WORKING OUT/LIFTING) when you won’t have weight of any kind!

        Thanks again, again,
        Ann

  40. Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine on February 3, 2010 at 11:37 am

I LOVE those ginger chews too! So good. And I’m the same way with Sevens- I just can’t get enough, despite their price!

  41. hemp jogger on February 3, 2010 at 11:50 am

love those shows as well! do tell me…how do you like the book? i read it this summer, as she is my favorite comedian aside from ellen. i was lol-ing all over the place! hysterical. i highly recommend the book she wrote prior to that…my horizontal life. too funny! AND there is a new release coming in march. hmm…do i love E! and celebrities a bit too much? yup 🙂

    • Fitnessista on February 3, 2010 at 11:52 am

i’m LOVING it so far! it cracks me up, big time. i have my horizontal life to read when this one is finished 🙂

  42. Kirsten on February 3, 2010 at 11:52 am

I love chelsea handler! I hear she has a new one coming out!!

  43. Stina @ Girl Can on February 3, 2010 at 11:55 am

I’m currently reading “Are You There Vodka…” as well. I definitely preferred “My Horizontal Life.” If you haven’t read that one, it’s a hilarious read.

  44. Liz on February 3, 2010 at 1:19 pm

OMG- I love Jersey Shore!! What is it about that show that makes it so damn entertaining?? And why do they all have odd nicknames like “Mike the Situation” and “JWow”??? Haha- that show never fails to send me into painful bouts of laughter 🙂 And you gotta love Chelsea Handler. I watch her show every day at 10. I told my friends that I wanted to be her and they told me: Please Liz, no. haha

  45. Erin @ Erin Eats and Exercises on February 3, 2010 at 1:23 pm

I love love love Sevens and I think they are worth every cent. I have also warn the same size jean for about 5 years so they do seem to last forever! Citizens are a close second in the jeans race…

As for Chelsea Handler…Laugh our loud good! She really went to prison??

  46. brittney on February 3, 2010 at 1:30 pm

My guilty pleasure (food wise) is cheese, cheese, cheese, cheese, cheese. I love it. All kinds. Sheeps, cow and goat. So yum.

Gina, since you like goat dairy, I thought I would tell you about the best goat cheese in the WORLD. It might be tough to find in Valdosta, but I know you can order it online. It is called Humboldt Fog, and it is made in the Bay Area. It is my all-time favorite cheese (lower in calories and fat than most, too!). Here’s me waxing poetic about it:

“It is aged, not fresh like ‘commercial’ goat cheese. It has a soft, bloomy rind. It is fresher in the center, and aged at the edges, which makes this cheese complex and varied. (Like many cheeses in one.)

Humboldt Fog has two layers, separated by a thin line of edible ash. The bottom layer is the morning milk from the goats, much more pungent and strongly flavored than the top layer, that is made from the milking of the afternoon.

I could eat a pound of that cheese, no problem. It is addictive and nuanced and everyone who tries it takes to it almost immediately. It is a rockstar cheese.”

These goats are treated like princesses. And the cheese shows it!

    • Fitnessista on February 3, 2010 at 2:12 pm

your cheese poetry just made my mouth water
      off to order now 🙂

  47. Madison on February 3, 2010 at 1:30 pm

I’m sorry if you have already shared this info but where do you buy millet bread. I’ve looked at a couple of places recently but it eludes me. I asked a vegan baker at the farmer’s market last weekend about this bread and she said that millet on it’s own cannot be made into bread and that it needs to be combined with another type of flour. So here I am with no millet bread.

  48. brittney on February 3, 2010 at 1:31 pm

OH, and it is made with vegetable rennet, so it is vegetarian. 🙂

    Great topic:)
Guilty pleasures: naps, chocolate cherry vegan soy ice cream, tempura sushi rolls (sweet potatoe is my fave), champagne, desperate houswives, ALL nora ephron books (Such a funny and great writer), and outrageous coffee drinks:)
Not-so-guilty pleasures: saunas, pilates, reading in the bath tub, avocados, cooking in general, long runs, and date night with my man:)

  50. Bridgette on February 3, 2010 at 1:45 pm

I’m been lurking on your blog for a couple of weeks now and I must say that I wasn’t much of a class taker @ the gym but the other day a zumba class and loved it. My guilty pleasures are:

    1. Spanish Telenovelas; I love the drama, the not so great acting and the really hot guys on some of the shows. I “heart” William Levy
    2. I do secretly watch the Keeping up with the Kardiashians
    3. I ended up getting sucked into The Hills on my of dreaded treadmill runs which help make the time go so much faster.
    4. I am a bag and shoe addict ( I recently cleaned out my closet and gave my niece about 20 bags and I still need to purge. I actually temporarily cured my bag addiction for a whole year when I spent a ridiculous amount of money on an LV bag and I couldn’t bring myself to buy another bag after that.

    Thanks for sharing!

    • Fitnessista on February 3, 2010 at 2:11 pm

      i love telenovelas, too 🙂
