Reader’s Request: Skincare

Hey everyone! How’s your day going? Hope it’s been bueno so far 😀

I’ve received a few emails like the following and figured it’d be a fun idea for a reader’s request post!

Dear Gina,

Would you please do a blog post on what you do to take care of your skin? Guess I need to start eating more raw food because your skin is always GLOWING! Please share your skincare routine with us.

Thank you!

Katie

The thing is, my skincare routine is much like my life.. a little all over the place 😉

I really believe that if you take good care of your body by eating well, working out and minimizing stress, you skin will respond beautifully.

Here’s a pic of me without makeup- the only thing I’ve got on is a little coconut oil on my lips

me

While I don’t use a ton of products on my face –except for eyeliner, I look like a dead person without it- here are some of my favorite products:

stash

A GIANT tub of coconut oil.. it’s a multipurpose beauty product but I use it the most as lipgloss and moisturizer

coconut oil

My Juice Beauty stash:

juice beauty

I wash my face twice a day with either the facial wash or exfoliating cleanser and wear the tinted SPF 20 moisturizer instead of foundation, every day. My skin is super sensitive and Juice Beauty is the only product I’ve found that works extremely well and doesn’t agitate it. Bonus: it’s ORGANIC 😀

toner and exfoliter

Eminence Oraganic toner (with lemon) that I spritz on if I’m not leaving the casa and don’t need SPF, and Repechage honey almond scrub that I use once or twice a week. The scrub has real almond chunks in it and makes my face feel suuuuuuupa smooth 😉 My friend Ashley got both of these products for me and they’re amazing.

Body butter, body brush, eyeshadow, bronzer, nighttime moisturizer, eyeliner and eyelash curler

butterbrushbobbi

Remember when I was at school and said I kept forgetting to dry brush??? I’ve used it every day since then and LOVE it! It wakes me up a little before I take a shower and it’s always nice to scrub off some dead skill cells 😉 for more info on dry brushing, click here

Also pictured above is my favorite body butter from Sephora (in vanilla cupcake, but I like the coconut cream one best), Laura Mercier eyeshadow, Bobbi Brown Bronzer, Lancome Renergie Microlift (the opposite of organic, but I use it before bed and kind of adore it), and Loreal kohl eyeliner(the best eyeliner I’ve found.. it’s about $7 and worked perfectly for smoky eyes or thin lines).

So now that’s you’ve seen my favorite skin goodies, here are my top tips for glowing and beautiful skin:

  1. Drink LOTS of water! When I don’t drink enough water, my skin is the first thing to tell me. Hydrate yo-self 😉
  2. Get lots of nutrients from fresh fruits, veggies and juice. Vitamins and nutrients in fresh fruits and veggies improve skin’s texture and elasticity and provide antioxidants. Antioxidants protect us from cancer and slow aging and disease progression.
  3. Stress less. Easier said than done, I know, but once I start letting stress take over, little bumps show up all over my face. Take deep breaths, keep a schedule, and if something unexpected pops up, deal with it in the best way possible. Try not to get worked up over things you can’t change.
  4. Workout! Sweating helps skin rid the body of toxins and can aid in stress reduction. Exercise endorphins are great for skin as well 🙂

Hope ya’ll enjoyed this post and if you have any reader’s requests send them my way: fitnessista at gmail dot com

See ya tonight!

xoxo,

Gina

Something to talk about: Tell me about your favorite can’t-live-without beauty product! I might have to give some new things a try 😉

It’s funny you decided to bring up this topic. I have just recently found the amazing benefts of 100% Coconut Oil. It is absoulutely amazing and I use it for my skin, hair and lip moisturizer. My sking has never felt so soft and I have tried numerous of products. I am making it a point to buy some for X-mas gifts. They may look at me a lil weird at first, but once they try it they will thank me for it over and over again.

I have found that Sephora’s line of beauty products are really great, and a good deal cheaper than the other brands that they sell. Their HUGE bronzer (probably 5 inches across) is my favorite as it doesn’t leave me all sparkly. They also have awesome eyeshadow kits – I have one with 6 strips of color (greens/olives/purples) and love it. And the one beauty trick that I’m loving right now is to put pearl (or other light-colored translucent) eyeshadow on the inner creases of my eyes. It makes me look so much more awake 🙂

Gina thank you so much for this post! I’m glad someone asked. I’m gonna look into that Juice Beauty line.

  4. Laura J. on December 7, 2009 at 4:54 pm

I think I might have to get on this coconut oil bandwagon 🙂 I had no idea it was such amazing stuff!

  5. Svetlana on December 7, 2009 at 5:07 pm

Gina, I love Eminence and Juice Beauty products! Eminence has some awesome masks. I also love Australian line, Jurlique, and French line called Decleor (they have wonderful oils for face, including awesome ylang-ylang oil). Another product that you might like is Microfoliant by Dermalogica. It’s rice-based facial exfoliant and it’s great!

    STELLAR tips! Thank you!

Do you use Coconut oil on your face or just body?

    • Fitnessista on December 7, 2009 at 9:35 pm

i just use it on my body but know quite a few people who use it on their face and hair

  8. K on December 7, 2009 at 5:21 pm

Love it! I agree with the water point. When I was doing the Zevia reviews for my blog, I started breaking out like CRAZY because I was replacing my usual water consumption with Zevia. Oops!

  9. Carrie on December 7, 2009 at 5:25 pm

You need to try a dermafile for exfoliating. It is a natural, holistic alternative to microdermabrasion. And, it is much cheaper!!

  10. Brigid on December 7, 2009 at 5:27 pm

I love my Desert Essence face wash and Avalon Organics body lotion (the lemon scent). I also make my own body scrubs, which make my skin really soft. I drink tons of water, too.

Eucerin Q10 Anti-Wrinkle Sensitive Skin Lotion SPF 15…Best moisturizer ever. If only it were SPF 30 or higher…

  12. Heather on December 7, 2009 at 5:53 pm

I love love love the Yes to Cucumbers Gel Eye Cream! I have dark circles around my eyes and it helps cool them and I swear makes them look less puffy. I don’t really buy into “anti-aging” stuff (I think the best “anti-aging” thing you can do is wear sunscreen!) so I feel like a shmuck buying eye cream at 24, but it makes ’em feel so good. Of course, I could use real cucumbers, but I’d rather eat them 😉

Sometimes I’ll make a face scrub out of oatmeal, almonds & honey. Oatmeal on my face is amazing.

But coconut oil, yes yes yes! I have oily and acne-prone skin so I use the Oil Cleansing Method (castor+jojoba oil to exfoliate and moisturize, and tea tree oil for redness) and then coconut oil at night. So amazing.

Thanks for sharing this!! Love hearing what other people’s beauty/skin routines are.

    Yay for coconut oil!

I just want to add to your list of TIPS for glowing skin: Sleep!

Adequate shut-eye is super-important – the time affords our bodies and internal organs the opportunity to clear out all the toxins we accumulate all throughout the day, whether through eating (metabolism), breathing, and even from the stress you talk about. That also releases a bunch of other crappy hormones.

    In short – rest! =)

I’ve used coconut oil on my skin for at least the past 7 years. I’ll be 40 in April and I don’t have a single line or wrinkle on my face. I’m sure a good diet and plenty of water help too, but I believe that ingesting and moisturizing with coconut oil every day is the main reason my skin is still in good shape. In fact, that’s all I use on my skin other than the soap I use in the shower, which I buy from LUSH.

  18. Sarah @ The Foodie Diaries on December 7, 2009 at 6:47 pm

I loved this post. I have store credit at Blue Mercury and I’ve heard they have some great coconut oil line–so I think I’ll pick some up. AGREED that stress shows first on la cara 🙁

  19. kelly on December 7, 2009 at 6:58 pm

Where do you get your coconut oil? Great post!

    • Fitnessista on December 7, 2009 at 9:37 pm

i get mine from earth shift but you can find it at any health food store

  20. Julie @savvyeats on December 7, 2009 at 7:26 pm

I love the Polished Organics Vanilla Salt Scrub .. smells like fresh cookies, and makes my skin feel smooth and moisturized all day long!

  21. Mara @ What's For Dinner? on December 7, 2009 at 7:35 pm

LOVE the tips, and i’m such a huge fan of coconut oil as moisturizer too! My best beauty tip though is one i got out of a magazine: rub half a lemon or grapefruit on your elbows before exfoliating. Helps get rid of nastiness!

  22. Jessica @ How Sweet It Is on December 7, 2009 at 7:42 pm

I LOVE coconut oil as moisturizer. I feel like I’m in the tropics. 🙂

  23. SN on December 7, 2009 at 7:56 pm

I massage heated coconut oil into my hair before washing it once a week. I used to hate it when my mom did it to me as a kid, but now I swear by it. I’ve never used coconut oil on my skin though–I should try it! I just use petroleum jelly as my multi-purpose moisturizer/lip balm.

  24. Sana on December 7, 2009 at 8:11 pm

Thanks for sharing! I have always wanted to get into dry brushing. What kind of brush is it?

    • Fitnessista on December 7, 2009 at 9:38 pm

it’s just a dry body brush- you can pick it up and most health stores, or in the makeup sections of target and wizzle (aka walmart)

  25. julie on December 7, 2009 at 8:27 pm

girl you gotta get this fast because prescriptives is going out of biz but their False Eyelashes Mascara is SO good 🙂

    • Fitnessista on December 7, 2009 at 9:38 pm

really?! thanks for the tip, i need new mascara!

  26. Erin on December 7, 2009 at 8:33 pm

I’ve never heard of Juice Beauty. They look like cool products!

My secret weapon is the $1.00 Wet N’ Wild black liquid eyeliner from anywhere drug store, USA. If I could only wear one thing every day, that would be it. I totally hear you on the eyeliner! Totally the opposite of organic too, but it works and it’s cheap!

  27. Janeen on December 7, 2009 at 9:43 pm

Wow your skin is beautiful! I get chemical peels and facials all the time but I still break out! I think my skin is sensitive too! So do I have to buy these products online or can I buy them at the store! For some reason… buying online makes me nervous but I would love to try something organic!

  28. Ashley @ Good Taste. Healthy Me on December 7, 2009 at 9:50 pm

Do you have dry skin? My skin is so so dry and sensitive! During the winter I have to go get facials every 4 weeks in order to keep my face from flaking right off! haha TMI, I know. I’m just wondering if those products would work well for me.

    Thanks!

    • Fitnessista on December 7, 2009 at 10:15 pm

yes, my skin is insanely dry. i also get facials pretty often, but the moisturizers i recommended are amazing 😀

  29. Mo @ Mommy RD on December 7, 2009 at 10:57 pm

Fun post. I’m almost as into the whole skincare/beauty stuff as I am into food. I long for every moisturizer, haircare product, etc out there. Totally a girly-girl!

  30. Brittany on December 8, 2009 at 12:15 am

I love the idea of coconut oil as a moisturizer, but am wondering if it absorbs into the skin, or do you have residue?? Just wondering because I would like to use it overnight but don’t want to make the pillow cases all greasy. PS — I use the Eminence Coconut Milk Cleanser and 8 Greens Whip moisturizer and love it! However, if I could replace it with coconut oil it would save me sooooooo much money!!

  31. Charlie on December 8, 2009 at 1:38 am

Does the coconut oil go bad if it’s not refridgerated?

    • Fitnessista on December 8, 2009 at 8:59 am

nope, you don’t need to refrigerate it at all

  32. Tarek on December 8, 2009 at 2:39 am

    Gina,

Just wanted to let you know that me and my sister are avid readers of your blog and really enjoy trying your recipes!

Just a thought–ever considered doing vlogs/quickie video recipes? I think it’d be an awesome addition to your site.

Also, let me know if you’re ever interested in updating your design–i’d love to help! 🙂

    Happy Holidays,

    Tarek

  33. Emily Eats on December 8, 2009 at 7:41 am

100% agree with your top 4 tips. I’ll have to look out for that body butter when next in a Sephora – sounds yum! Have you ever used a facial brush for exfoliation? I started after reading an article in Get Fresh magazine.
    Have a great day ~

  34. rach on December 8, 2009 at 7:57 am

Love the coconut oil, I rubbed coconut oil on my belly everynight when I was pregnant to keep stretchmarks at bay. I have never seen the juice brand. Suki Naturals is awesome too, I have sensitive skin as well and the Suki products work great for me, I just don’t let me husband see how much I pay for them:)

  35. rhodeygirl on December 8, 2009 at 8:30 am

    Thanks for sharing Gina.

I actually keep it so classic and wash my face grandma style. I use a face wash every other day, but every day out of my shower I use Nivea cream (cold cream) on my face and neck. Somehow I have great skin anyway? I think it is genetics? My derm told me it was a great routine and not to change it unless I have problems so I don’t become dependent on any products. i am down with that.

Hand cream, on the other hand…. I use it like 10,000 times a day and my hands are STILL dry.

    • Fitnessista on December 8, 2009 at 8:57 am

I love this post, Gina! It’s alway fun/educational to see what other skin care products bloggers like to use. It’s like being test driven for me! One product that I swear by and use in the shower every morning is the St Yves Apricot Scrub. Love that stuff!!

C.O. Bigelow – my favorite Lip balm is definitely my favorite beauty remedy I put it on every night before I go to bed (as I’m an open mouth sleeper!) its great! Also have tried the Eminence it works great on my face also really tightens my pores!

New here and this is a great post! It makes me want to try some new products. Your skin looks amazing which speaks for these products. Thanks for sharing!

  42. Courtney on December 8, 2009 at 11:11 am

My fave product lately has been Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soap bars – they do triple duty as face wash/body wash/shampoo. It’s a vegetable based soap, and seems to protect my hair better than other products for blow-drying after I’ve used it as shampoo, thus eliminating the need for so many extra products in our bathroom! Which I’m sure my husband also appreciates 😉 Thanks for the recommendations!

  43. Alicia on December 8, 2009 at 1:10 pm

I agree with everyone else, your skin always has a beautiful glow.
Mmm the coconut oil sounds like a good idea. I am allergic/sensitive to a lot of products too.
Thanks for the linking to dry brushing, I may have to give it a try.

This is a Fab post, doll! I love seeing what other ladies are doing to feed and treat their skin.

I love the Juice Beauty line, and use there face wash twice a day – I did however find their cream left me a tad greasy. Anywhoo – I am now using this amazing 100% natural cream and serum that is to die for!! It is by the formulator for the Hollywood’s secret cream (I don’t use this cream, but it is similar) – have you heard of that? LOL…such a gossip column reader I am!

I agree with the coconut oil as a moisturizer I use it all the time!! Good – Clean water is important, A healthy diet and sleep is important for good ageless skin. Of course along with exercise and stress-free thinking!! WOOOT

    XXOO

  45. miriam on December 8, 2009 at 1:29 pm

Evian spritz water!! My skin is so so dry but I can’t be applying moisturiser all day. Especially when I already have makeup on. So, anytime during the day, this works wonderfully!! (My dog likes a little spritz too… she comes near by and looks at me whenever I am using it, so funny!)

I’m a HUGE Juice Beauty fan! I’ve never tried a product of theirs that I didn’t absolutely fall in love with! If you want to see immediate results on your skin tone, texture and poor size – try Juice Beauty Green Apple Peel. You will be amazed! i’m also a huge fan of their USDA Concentrate, absolutely amazing! I usually purchase their products at Sephora or their website, but I just saw their new store in the San Francisco Westfield Mall. SO cool!!

  49. Paige (Running Around Normal) on December 13, 2009 at 10:41 am

Jojoba oil is really great for acne because it helps balance facial oil.*~-
