See ya later, first trimester

Today, I’m 13 weeks 1 day into the whole pregnancy thing. The good news is that chance of the “m” word has dramatically reduced (which I’m so grateful for) and the sad news is that I’m a third of a way through. As much as there have been some not-so-fun parts (like the feeling like I could be sick at any second of the day), I’ve really enjoyed every second and even relished in the fact that it feels like things are happening in there.

Seeing my baby move and dance

Hearing the heartbeat

And being able to share it all with my husband

Are all things that I will never, ever forget. These are what I like to call life-makers.. the things you remember later and still give you chills because they’re so meaningful, and the memories so vivid.

baby

It’s funny because growing up, I thought pregnancy was -not to sound weird, but- kinda gross. I used to tell my mom I would rather adopt and give another child a home who needed it than grow an alien in my stomach 🙂 That is, until last summer and baby fever hit me with a bang. When it hits, it hits hard, let me tell ya. Needless to say, I don’t feel at all like there’s an alien in there, haha. It’s not creepy or weird in the least and I’m already so head over heels in love with the baby, it’s amazing.

Here’s a breakdown of what happened in the trimester:

-Bags of salt and vinegar chips consumed: 4 (+ 2 snack-sized bags)

-Jars of sauerkraut consumed: 1, within a 24-hour period

-Blocks of gout gouda consumed: 3

-Eggs eaten: one thousand

-Vegetables eaten: far and few between – thank goodness for green smoothies and random salad cravings

-Most random food combination: sauerkraut, hummus and mustard, pinched up with romaine leaves

-Worst aversion: eggplant. Keep it far away from me!

-Trips taken: 1 glorious getaway to Vegas

us (2)

-Weight gained: 6 lbs (my pre-pregnancy clothes still fit… for now)

-Foot massages from the Pilot: almost daily. Swoon

-Snoogle love: Infinite

What I’m looking forward to in the second trimester:

-Feeling normal again. I’m already starting to feel a little lift in energy, but as soon as the nausea and all-day sickness goes away, I have to say I’ll be a fan

-Feeling kicks!!! I’m so excited for that, I can hardly stand it

-Finding out the gender. I still think it’s a boy, maybe people are guessing girl. It’s so much fun because it’s one of the very few things where you have NO IDEA, and no way to Google or find out. Also, as a Type A, it’s driving me crazy haha

-Having the legit baby belly. Also praying my “innie” doesn’t turn into an “outie” but no big deal 🙂

Things to do:

Figure out a birth plan, which most likely will not go according to plan (and that’s ok). I’m fortunate to have a birth team who believes in minimal medical intervention, which is the route I’d like to go.

-Start planning the nursery as soon as we find out the gender. The nursery most likely won’t have a “theme”, but I’m ready to start planning furniture and décor in the new house. We have a loft attached to the master bedroom with double doors, which will be the nursery.

nursery

-Research my little heart out on breastfeeding, cloth diapering and other post-partum things that I haven’t a clue about.

It’s all an exciting adventure, for sure <3

Where did you get that little play set in the last picture (or if you got it 2nd hand, just the brand and I’ll hunt it down)

I did a jungle animal theme for the nursery which is fun because it can go either way for gender.

2nd trimester is also when you get to the baby registry, which is fun, but involves a lot of research. I swear just trying to pick out a mattress was a 2 week process.

    • Fitnessista on July 1, 2011 at 2:57 pm

it’s not mine- the people who live in the house are still there, so it belongs to them. none of our stuff is in there yet, but i do like the playset!

      • Kara on July 1, 2011 at 3:18 pm

I need my entire house to be made of that easy to wipe down foam block material.

  2. BethT on July 1, 2011 at 2:56 pm

Pregnancy IS gross. It’s beautiful and wonderful….but no denying it’s also hella nasty at times! 🙂

I was lucky that I never had horrible back pain, swelling, or any of those other things that make people hate pregnancy. I miss having a little peanut kicking around inside of me -there’s nothing like it! Of course, I love my “outside” baby, too 🙂 But pregnancy is so special – especially the first time around.

  3. Jamie Marie on July 1, 2011 at 2:58 pm

Is it normal that half-way through this post, I began to cry?…and technically, I don’t even know you? I’m really creeped out by this.
all awkwardness aside, I’m so incredibly happy for you guys. Joyous!!! I love the family tab!

You already have a playset!!!! So sweet. I love your family posts — they are seriously such a blast to read 🙂 More belly pics are necessary though!

I still say girl too! We shall see! I’ve always wanted to be pregnant. Probably not what a mother of a 10 year old wants to hear, but I’ve been dreaming of the day when I can have children foreverrr!!!

  10. Laura @ Backstage Pass on July 1, 2011 at 3:04 pm

Awww congrats on reaching the end of your first trimester! You should have a little party with the Pilot to celebrate this milestone 🙂
And I think it’s so wonderful how positive you are about this experience! I teared up a bit when reading the bit about the “life-makers.” That’s incredibly beautiful, thanks so much for sharing with us. I’m so happy for your family!

  11. Kelly @ Laughter, Strength, and Food on July 1, 2011 at 3:10 pm

What an amazing post! So exciting to be sharing this journey with you! 😀

  12. Roselyn on July 1, 2011 at 3:11 pm

The 2nd trimester is great because its (typically) when you feel the best. No more AM sickness, you’re starting to show so you don’t feel “fat” anymore, and you’re still mobile. The kicks and finding out the gender is super exciting too. 🙂

  13. LeeAnn on July 1, 2011 at 3:13 pm

I have a patient who is about 16 weeks and I directed her to the snoogle based off of all the great things you have said about it! Love following along 🙂

  14. Jessica @ Sushi and Sit-Ups on July 1, 2011 at 3:15 pm

The whole baby process seems weird to me as well, so it’s good to know that there’s still hope for me yet! Hopefully by the time I’m ready, I’ll have overcome it like you have!

  15. Chloe (South Beach Girl) on July 1, 2011 at 3:21 pm

Gina this has been so exciting to read about (I hope that is not creepy to you at all because I don’t mean it to be!) I so look forward to the day when Jason and I are ready to have a baby.

Will The Pilot be writing any family posts?

    • Fitnessista on July 1, 2011 at 3:45 pm

      i’m begging him. hopefully soon!

  18. Cynthia on July 1, 2011 at 3:29 pm

    Ahhh, that is so exciting!!!

I will never forget the first time I felt my little bebe move, I was doing a set of bench presses! Tears of joy!

If you haven’t already, make sure to check out the La Leche League for all things breastfeeding.
    http://www.lllofaz.org/

I started going to the meetings a couple of months before and got to meet some girls that were due around the same time. I learned a lot from their stories and it was good to know I could call someone if I ran into any issues.

    Many blessings!

yay!! woohoo for being one trimester down! so so happy for you =)

Pregnancy is the most wonderful thing, I loved every second of mine! And yes, it is like you said, little moments you will never forget! (my son is now 9 and I remember every single bit of it all)
Will you ever get the post about how you got pregnant up again? I did send you an e-mail about it, did you get it?
    Thanks

Glad you got through the 1st trimester!!! I like to call the 2nd “The Honeymoon Trimester” enjoy!

I feel like it goes SO fast until the last 2 weeks. I remember the dancing ultrasound, so amazing!

Your little peanut already looks JUST like you 😉

  25. Karen on July 1, 2011 at 4:32 pm

YAY for 12 weeks! I will be 14 weeks on Sunday and the past two weeks have gone by so fast.

    Have an amazing Holiday weekend!!

  26. VegMommy on July 1, 2011 at 4:47 pm

Congratulations! You’re at the fun part! It seemed like I ate nothing but salted fruit salad and lettuce salads with dill relish my 1st trimester, but right at the 13th week mark, everything started getting better. My energy kicked back up, I ate like a normal person, and my feet hadn’t gotten too waterlogged yet.

Reading this post reminds me of all those wonderful “firsts” in my pregnancy. It really is your body connecting you to your baby while you’re still “making” her/him. Keep a diary to relive it all later!

  27. Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga on July 1, 2011 at 5:40 pm

I just posted about cloth diapers in a bit of a trip down memory lane…and cloth wipes, too!

If you think there’s research to do about carseats or cashews in raw desserts, just wait til you tackle diapers. It’s.Never.Ending. Omg. But it’s soooo fun!

“These are what I like to call life-makers.. the things you remember later and still give you chills because they’re so meaningful, and the memories so vivid.”–
    Amen girl.

I still remember to this day, and it STILL gives me chills, the 1st time I heard her heartbeat, saw her, found out the gender, felt the first kick and knew it was (looking back, it was happening a few weeks before I Realized what it was b/c they are so faint and fluttery)…but yes, love the word life makers.

And congrats on being in the 2nd tri. Trust me, by 30-35 weeks, you will be really happy time flew by in the 1st tri. Time begins to slow down a bit later on. And you get really excited to just BIRTH your bundle 🙂 Well, I did at least!

  28. Errign on July 1, 2011 at 5:42 pm

So happy for you guys! (I’m feeling so totally weird about being psyched for people I don’t actually know, but anywho)….

Have you ever done Yin Yoga? It’s yoga where you hold the poses for 3-5 minutes each and it’s kind of nice & relaxing. The poses are like pigeon and tree (but laying on your back), but you use blankets/bolsters to support your legs if they don’t reach the ground, etc. I just tried it today and I basically took a bunch of mini yoga naps. 🙂

  29. Leslie on July 1, 2011 at 5:48 pm

I think you kind of have to grow up let the hormones do their thang for pregnancy to not be weird—I think most of us thought it was really weird when we were younger and then grew into the fact that it’s a beautiful thing! My baby will be three next month and your posts are definitely taking me down memory lane! I loved being pregnant, I almost didn’t want it to end! 😉

So happy your done with the first trimester though—second is the most fun in my opinion!! 😀

  30. britt on July 1, 2011 at 5:52 pm

yay for making it to the 2nd trimester!! it was definitely my favorite.

i see you’re interested in cloth diapering. i have cloth diapered my now 10 month old since birth and LOVE it! if you have any questions or are looking for suggestions, i would be more than happy to help ya out and share with you some resources that helped me.

btw, i love reading the family posts. being pregnant was my most favorite time ever and i love thinking back when i read your posts. i get a little nostalgic 😀

Congrats on starting your second trimester, I just started my third… The kicks and moving are amazing, by far my most favorite part of pregnancy so far, today I think I got a little bum in the air as my belly became distorted to one side!

Your most random eats sounds good to me, I’m looking forward to some sauerkraut this weekend!

There is so much to look forward to! I think you are having a girl; I usually judge it by the food a woman is craving…me, I had a girl and vegetables were NEVER consumed throughout my whole pregnancy!! Grossed me out! <3

  42. Lauren on July 1, 2011 at 9:50 pm

Your baby is adorable already!! The baby moving is the best feeling in the world! Feels like butterflies fluttering! Gosh, you always make me miss being pregnant!

P.s. I’m no expert, but I’ve been breastfeeding exclusively for 7 months straight so if you have any questions, when you start that research, you can email me! 🙂 my friend Kristen Suzanne taught me everything I know! 🙂

P.s.s watermelon…like half of one a night… Perfect preg food in the heat of the summer! Funny, my baby loves being in the water..we always joke that it was from all the watermelon! 🙂

Random tidbit, did you see what’s in the background of the Vegas picture of you and the Pilot right above your head?! Haha!

I hope your second trimester goes great and honestly, can’t wait to see what your eating is like lol

I’m not pregnant and not planning for it anytime soon, but I’m curious about cloth diapers because I saw them on Averie’s page too. Are cloth diapers supposed to better? Or is it more to be environmentally friendly? I figure it’s good to learn about these things whenever I can. 🙂

    • Fitnessista on July 2, 2011 at 9:01 pm

more environmentally friendly since you wash the diapers and resuse them, instead of throwing them away

  47. Julia on July 2, 2011 at 3:44 am

    thanks for keeping us updated!
will we actually ever get to see the un-blurred version of your vision board?! 🙂

  48. meagan on July 2, 2011 at 9:24 am

The second trimester is so much fun (especially at 20 weeks for us Type As!). It really is the glorious pregnancy time where your hair gets thick and shiny, you don’t puke, have energy, feel kicks, get the cute bump. Relish it!

And yay cloth diapering! We love it. No doubt it’s extra laundry, but we use prefolds + covers and it saves us so. much. stinking. money. especially because we line dry and sun them.

Yay! I’m so happy for you!

    • meagan on July 2, 2011 at 9:26 am

Also, for breastfeeding I loved loved loved the book ‘The Nursing Mother’s Companion’. I kept it with me for the first two weeks straight after C was born…just chock-full of information, photos, etc. and I found her style really approachable.

  49. kaila @ healthy helper! on July 2, 2011 at 10:19 am

I’m young but I have the same feeling you said you had….I feel like I wanna adopt or not have kids at all when I’m older. But I guess when you’re older things change a bit.

I am so happy for you though! It sounds like you’re in pure heaven and I love how much you’re loving this whole process! So positive!

  50. Stephanie on July 2, 2011 at 11:19 am

Congratulations! This is a milestone. Now you can breathe easier and start planning. Cloth diapers are definitely worth looking into. Not to be too graphic, but I use cloth feminine products. They’re what sold me on cloth diapers for my future baby…a gajillion times more comfortable than the plastic laden disposibles.
