SSU Faves: 6/15

Hi friends! It’s the WEEKEND! Also Father’s Day weekend 🙂 Any fun plans? We’re having dinner at the dadoo’s tomorrow night and I’m scheming up ideas for Sunday with the Pilot. (Please send any legendary ideas my way!) I’m booking him a massage for when he gets off work today. He probably won’t read this post since he has a ton of meetings, but just in case he’s seeing this: SURPRISE, BRAIN 🙂 haha.

This morning started a little.. ahem.. earlier than most. The tiny girl in the room next to us was practicing her singing/screaming skills. Usually Liv is happy to play with her toes and look around until I get out of bed (which I appreciate so much), but this morning she was doing a mix of baby pterodactyl mixed with Nicki Minaj.

Breakfast:

Omelet

I was low on protein yesterday, so that’s all I wanted this morning. An omelet with green chili goat cream cheese, Dijon, turkey and two eggs with a tortilla

Would have loved some greens with it, but we’re out- I went through 3 containers this week! Time to make a Coscto run.

For those of you who asked what kind of goat cheese I’ve been using, here’s what the container looks like:

Goat cream cheese

(Same company that makes the goat’s milk yogurt I love)

I picked it up at Whole Foods the other day when Liv and I went to pick up birthday cupcakes for madre + a green juice for me.

Cupcakes

I put the cupcakes in tupperware containers so they wouldn’t fall over and get smashed as we drove around, and it almost made it look like I made the cupcakes myself 😉

Thank you so much to everyone who has been following the Shape Up this year! I feel like it’s the best one yet and have loved reading your check-ins on the blog, Twitter comments and pics + Facebook updates. It’s been so much fun and I’ve loved participating with you on the days my teaching schedule allows it.

Yaaay for the weekend!! Those are some great workout shots!! I’ll be sure to send you one next week. For Father’s Day, I will be calling my dad as usual, since he lives in the Middle East still and unfortunately I can’t be there! Your cupcakes look gorgeous… I think you should take full credit for that ‘baking’!!! 🙂

  2. Julia on June 15, 2012 at 11:54 am

    The cupcakes look de-li-cious!

Random Fact: Although it’s a great song, I am sick of it as it was the title song for Germany’s Next Topmodel over here…:-)

    • Fitnessista on June 15, 2012 at 11:57 am

the nicki minaj song? omg i’m sick of it too. it sounded like liv was trying to do the rap from it this morning, though (esp the “ay ay ay ay ay ay ay ay ay” at the end)

      • Julia on June 15, 2012 at 1:30 pm

        Yeah, this song.
I have the feeling Liv tries to channel her inner Sophia Grace…:-)

  10. Clare on June 15, 2012 at 1:01 pm

I’m having to skip working out today, I’ve got a hip injury that re-emerges from time to time, and its back unfortunately. Its too bad even to take a long walk or yoga, so frustrating. Eats have been good, other than a little blip yesterday (3 shortbread finger cookies, eeek) – do you have any tips for avoiding emotional eating? I can stay on track pretty well unless I start getting upset/stressed and end up saying “screw it!” and eating junk.

  11. Ellie@Fit for the Soul on June 15, 2012 at 1:11 pm

hahaha I love those after workout images! They’re so funny and probably how I look too after a good workout. And that chili goat cheese sounds really really good~I think I’ll give it a try sometime soon!

  12. Katie @ running4cupcakes on June 15, 2012 at 1:13 pm

got my sweat on this mornning doing workout #2! love HIIT – makes me feel strong and powerfu!

  13. Abby on June 15, 2012 at 1:13 pm

Can being up with a sick baby the last 3 days straight count as steady state cardio? If not then I’ve been seriously slacking on my summer shape up workouts, and dinner last night ended up being junk after I burned the chicken I was cooking when baby started throwing up again :/ gonna try to get in workout 1 today IF I can get her down for a nap, and IF I don’t fall asleep too.

    • Fitnessista on June 15, 2012 at 1:14 pm

um YES that counts. hang in there, and take a nap too. hope she feels better (and mama gets some rest) soon!

  14. Jenny on June 15, 2012 at 1:20 pm

Love the pics!! For my husband’s first father’s day, I put his favorite pic of our son in a frame with hand and foot prints on the mat around the frame. He still has it on his dresser today.

  15. Laura on June 15, 2012 at 1:27 pm

Thanks for the Summer Shape Up workouts. The instructions are clear, pictures good and the video really informative. It is hard to believe you are just giving all this away for free.

I have been doing the strength parts this week. My cardio comes from running four times a week. The strength parts of Summer Shape Up are really good addition for my fitness regime. They are challenging enough without being overwhelming.

  16. pluvk on June 15, 2012 at 1:36 pm

Since I accidentally did my HIIT yesterday, I mixed it up today and did cardio with Workout 1. It got me soooooooo sweaty! I love those kind of workouts. Thanks, Gina! 🙂 And happy early father’s day to your pilot!

  17. Beth on June 15, 2012 at 1:55 pm

I did the HIIT this morning (first time! holy moly!) and the circuit later while my daughter was napping. I’m enjoying it more than I thought I would. It’s so nice to change up the routine. ALSO, I made the Indian spiced chickpea patties last night and they were so good! My husband and 11 month old daughter both loved them. 🙂

  18. Whitney @ Whit Likes Fit on June 15, 2012 at 1:57 pm

Congrats on your glamour shout-out and thanks for including me on here 🙂 We seriously loved that dinner. My husband who is normally super picky about trying new things loved it. He’s even talking about trying it with shrimp, salmon…

I can’t wait to one day buy a fathers day gift for my husband! The massage idea is a great gift especially because guys rarely pamper themselves 🙂 happy first fathers day with your new baby!

  20. JennF on June 15, 2012 at 2:31 pm

I started the ChaLean Extreme DVDs this week (she is NOT playing around!), so even though I’m not doing the SSU, it’s kind of fun to start something new along with all of you guys.

  21. Katie H on June 15, 2012 at 2:55 pm

I had to swap and do a steady state 4 miler this morning – so Workout #1 will 1 be on Sunday! Loving Summer Shape Up!

  22. April on June 15, 2012 at 3:15 pm

It’s a little last-minute for this weekend, but for my husband’s first Father’s Day, I made a photo album of my son (then about 3 months) “doing” all the things my husband loves to do. For example, I put a bandana and cloth diaper on him, and gave him some chopsticks on one page, since my husband loves to make sushi. Then I took out our hiking boots, tent, and sleeping bags, and dressed my son up as if we were going on a major camping trip. Basically, anything my husband loves, I made a page for, with cute captions telling him how Sebastian couldn’t wait to be just like his papa. 🙂 It was a pretty big hit. Maybe you could buy a canvas, strip Livi down with some non-toxic paints and let her go to town. That’s another fave over here! It’s messy, but it’s all in the name of original art!

    • Kristen on June 15, 2012 at 4:13 pm

I love the photo album! That’s so creative and personal. I’m stealing this idea for my hubby’s upcoming bday 🙂

  23. Talia @ Bite Size Wellness on June 15, 2012 at 3:26 pm

Glamour shout out! That is fantastic. Way to go Gina.
    Love all the awesome pictures:)

  24. Kate on June 15, 2012 at 3:36 pm

WO #1 and 20 minutes of hill sprints for my HIIT done!! Now drinking a lavender Kombucha. Thanks for the motivation!!

  25. Becky on June 15, 2012 at 3:42 pm

Gina- Is there a benefit to doing strength before cardio (example: Workout 1 then HIIT). I find that if I do strength exercises first, I have no desire to do HIIT, so I’ve been doing HIIT first. Did a lot of research and it looks like there’s a lot of conflicting info. Would love your knowledge and opinion! Thx

    • Fitnessista on June 15, 2012 at 5:30 pm

      hey girl,
it depends on what your goals are. i personally prefer cardio after weights. your body burns carbs first, then fat, then protein so i figure i’d rather do the weights for the carb burning, and when i hit the cardio it’s more focused on burning fat.

  26. Kristen on June 15, 2012 at 4:03 pm

Unfortunately I haven’t been able to participate in SSU 🙁 but I’m loving seeing others kick some bootay!!! You go girls…and guys!

Gina, how do you handle eating at get togethers? I know you often take a few dishes. But if ever you don’t and they have things you won’t eat, do you just roll with it that one time or what? I went to a spur of the moment BBQ and thought there was going to be chicken and some sides. It didn’t happen. Instead, they had hotdogs. I just don’t eat hotdogs but I forced myself to eat one because I didn’t want to be rude. I’m not sure how to handle that situation. Any advice?

    • Fitnessista on June 15, 2012 at 5:29 pm

as far as meat goes (that isn’t fish or chicken), i won’t eat it no matter what. as far as anything else goes (gluten, dairy, etc), i’ll just have a small amount that one time. i usually feel sick afterwards but it depends on how well i know the people and i don’t want to rude

  27. Jana (JanaKickBooty) on June 15, 2012 at 4:04 pm

*squeeeeeeeeeeee*! I made it in the pics! *lol*

Congrats on the Glamour shout out!

And I gave my hubby a book called the: The BBQ Bible for one Father’s Day and he loved it – thought that could be a good idea for the grillmaster pilot. – They have some seriously awesome receipes!

    Have a great weekend! 🙂

  28. Megan S. on June 15, 2012 at 4:37 pm

Love it! Got my sweat on this morning and the HIIT always kicks my butt. I had to get on the elliptical because my legs were a little burnt out from squats, mountain climbers, and step-ups!

Can’t wait to try your bridal bootcamp after this 🙂

  29. Rebecca on June 15, 2012 at 5:06 pm

I just did workout 1 + 15 min of HIIT! Definitely felt good 🙂 I can’t wait to try the bedtime ab burner tonight! Woo 🙂

  30. S. on June 15, 2012 at 5:19 pm

I did 3 rounds of your circuit and about 15 minutes of HIIT on the elliptical! I was definitely sweaty and my arms were shaking by the end of it all! Looking forward to busting out the ab burner later today! 🙂

  31. Madison on June 15, 2012 at 5:34 pm

Completed 3 circuits + 15 minutes of HIIT on the bike on lunch break! I have to say those pushups are…intense. I had been dreading them since the last time. Haha. Looking forward to week two!

      great job, lovely!

  32. Laura on June 15, 2012 at 5:54 pm

Second day of workout 1 done plus 20 minutes of HIIT on the elliptical! I’m drinking a Friday night manhattan currently but I promise to get in the ab burner before bed 🙂

      awesome 🙂

  33. Kelsey S on June 15, 2012 at 7:20 pm

alright so i am almost positive you’ve mentioned this before but I cannot remember for the life of me what post it was in: what do you do to your tortillas to keep them soft and from falling apart!!??

    • Fitnessista on June 15, 2012 at 7:21 pm

keep them in the freezer- when i want one, chisel it out and microwave for 30 seconds

  34. Erin on June 15, 2012 at 7:21 pm

yesterday was my rest day (although my current OT placement is at a daycare with children age 12 mos to 5 years, so im constantly moving;) ). today i did workout 1 (for the second time) and 20 minutes of hiit on the dreadmill (1:30 @ 6.2, :30 @ 8.2). i’ll do the ab burner later 🙂

i’ve always exercised 4-6x a week, usually strength training + cardio at the gym and runs outside.. but it’s really nice to do something different for these few weeks. i LOVE the circuit workout.. i’ve always been more of a “super setter”, but i am LOVING rotating through a whole variety once and then repeating. plus ive always shyed away from hiit – my main focus seems to always be adding distance – but man i have never sweated so much! and the push ups… my arms hurt for days 😀 definitely feels great to switch it up!

    thanks gina 🙂

  35. Rachel on June 15, 2012 at 7:21 pm

I reaaaaaaaaaally need to get my hands on that goat cream cheese. And that egg thingy looks so tasty!

  36. Yenoh on June 15, 2012 at 8:06 pm

That omelet looks great! What kind of turkey do you normally use? It looks like a cold cut kind. Is it high in sodium?

  37. Heather on June 15, 2012 at 8:33 pm

What is that breakfast cookie??? It looks awesome!!!!

  38. Ashley on June 15, 2012 at 9:51 pm

Yay my cookie!! 🙂 it was seriously…I had never done cold oats before but this is going to be a permanent addition to my breakfast arsenal! Lol
The work outs have been awesome! I was getting bored of my routine and this has been such a good way to shake things up and push my body. And the food has actually made me feel BETTER, like I can definitely tell the added protein (via tempeh and tofu) have given me more energy. I also have had no refined sugar this whole first week (a HUGE deal for me!!!) so having all these new recipes and flavors has helped with that too! And also, my munchkin has been loving everything too, which makes food prep that much easier lol anddd end ramble!
    Oh!! And ab burner done!!

  39. Chelsea on June 15, 2012 at 9:55 pm

Completed 3 circuits of workout 1 and 20 mins of HIIT today on the treadmill! Planning on doing the ab burner later. I am LOVING these workouts. 🙂 Thanks!

  40. Mandy M on June 15, 2012 at 9:56 pm

Ah, happy first father’s day to the Pilot.
This week went great. I got some munchies this afternoon and ate too much cereal mix, but that’s alright.
Did week 1 wo again this morning along with ZWOW #9. The combo of yourself and Zuzana make me pour sweat. Looking forward to doing the ab burner before bed and a nice run tomorrow morning before it gets too hot.
Excited for next weeks eats as well.

    • Fitnessista on June 15, 2012 at 11:48 pm

that sounds like an amazing combo- i’ve done zwow 9 before and loved it.

  43. Amelia on June 15, 2012 at 11:19 pm

Congrats on the Glamour shout out!!

Just finished up the Ab Burner and did my Workout 1 and HIIT earlier today. I thought Workout 1 was tough, but after doing the abs I would gladly trade crunches for more pushups!!
I really like the idea of “checking in” each day. I love reading what other people have to say and their questions as they go along.

    • Fitnessista on June 15, 2012 at 11:46 pm

i seriously love reading about everyone’s workouts, even if they’re not doing the shape up. i’m glad you are though 🙂 great job!!

Got in Workout 1 & HIIT at the gym tonight and just finished the ab burner. I have a question about the circle obliques– is there a video how to on this move? I just can’t seem to wrap my mind or body around how that works. Thanks again Gina! I’m really enjoying the Summer Shape Up!

  45. Caitlin on June 16, 2012 at 1:42 am

holy moly! i just did the bedtime ab burner…it fits its name. got up this morning before work around 6 and did the circuit and 18 mins of hiit. whew! im so excited for the next workout. i love that they are quick but effective 🙂

  46. E on June 16, 2012 at 12:32 pm

Hey Gina – I was too late to leave a comment on the contest entry post, but you know what I’d really like to see more of on your blog? Reviews of fitness clothing brands. There’s so much out there, and I can’t tell if Lulu and Lucy are really worth more than UA, or if UA is really worth more than C9 by Target or Old Navy, you know? I’d love to see you review different clothing items for different activities. It’s hard to find an unbiased opinion, and I don’t have the spare cash to comparison shop myself.

    Thanks!

    • Fitnessista on June 16, 2012 at 11:37 pm

Doing Workout 1 + HIT today after a nice day of rest and friend time yesterday. I’m really enjoying the workouts but have a really hard time with the V Up!! I can hardly do 1!! lol Looking forward to seeing your meal plan. I always enjoy trying new recipes!!

  49. erin on June 16, 2012 at 2:03 pm

today’s steady state was a 4m run to the gym to do the ab burner (i read a book and fell asleep last night, ha) and a little extra leg work. i took the bus home haha.

and just in case anyone is interested, i made THE BEST oatmeal this morning.

1 small RIPE banana (half smashed, half sliced)
    1/2 cup oats
    1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk
    1 T chia seed
    1 t vanilla extract
    1 t cinnamon
    1/2 cup water
    1 T chopped walnuts

let the mashed banana, oats, almond milk, chia, cinnamon, and vanilla soak together in a small saucepan (no heat) for about 10 minutes to let the chia soften up. then added the water and cooked on med heat until ready. topped with walnuts, sliced bananas, and a sprinkle more cinnamon.

    i almost died.

  50. stacy seratt on June 16, 2012 at 3:57 pm

Yesterday I completed workout#1 and HIIT on the eliptical. Today i got in 45 mins of spinning on my trainer. Today is apparently a treat day since I had a wedding shower to attend and my parents are coming over for dinner. I made all my dad’s faves and its southern style food with all the fat. I roasted some veggies for me (and for a couple more days worth) and will try to limit all the other food. Shouldn’t be too hard, since I really don’t like some of that stuff anyway.
