Stayin’ alive

Many bloggers will go outside and take lovely pictures of foliage or flowers for their posts.

Everything is pretty much dead over here, except for the grass

and this cilantro:

cilantro

which I haven’t watered in at least 4 months. It’s a survivor, for sure.

Also, the perfect complement to the baby meal my friend Liz brought over last night:

tacos2

TACOS!

I can’t believe I forgot to snap a pic of everything (oh yeah, because I was chowing down as fast as possible), but it was amazing.

This morning’s breakfast for two:

breakfast5

Waffles and eggs for the Pilot

eggs, turkey, goat cheese, brown rice tortilla and tangerine juice for me:

We ended up staying home yesterday since I’ve been on bed rest for most of the week. Yesterday was the first day I’ve felt a lot better, but we decided to lay low for one more day. I thought I just wasn’t supposed to be super active or work out, but apparently I can’t do dishes or laundry either… yikes. Have you ever been on bed rest before, or out for the count due to an injury? What helped you keep your sanity?

Hope everyone is having a great weekend so far, and I’ll see ya later tonight with a Family post <3

xoxo

Did you tear? I was supposed to take it easy after my c-section but I still ended up doing a fair amount around the house by day 4 or so. The only thing I waited on was vacuuming because they said the movement could tear open the incision – and well, because I kinda hate vacuuming to begin with. Like pregnancy, though, the whole postpartum deal is so individual!

When my back flares up and I can’t move, the thing I do to keep myself sane is to put my head into an entire series of something. Last time it was Grey’s Anatomy and How I Met Your Mother. A lot of hours. Vicarious living!

    • Sara on January 21, 2012 at 7:39 pm

When I was laid up for six weeks (kidney surgery) I watched entire series of CSI, all three versions, and Criminal Minds. So, I came out of that little experience with a serious addiction.;.. to the C&I channel.

Oh no, why were you put on bed rest? Hope you’re feeling better soon. Sending love to you and your family.

  6. amy on January 21, 2012 at 2:02 pm

What happened? Take care of yourself and stay off those feet! Read some books, work on your taxes, flip through magazines, pin things on Pinterest, watch your favorite movies, oh, and snuggle with your baby!

    Get well soon!

When I was pregnant with my daughter I was on bed rest for about eight months. It was hard being so inactive.

  10. Brooke @ Exercise For Fries on January 21, 2012 at 2:13 pm

Glad you’re feeling better! When I was out for a few weeks due to surgery I just watched a whole bunch of movies. Luckily you have a pretty little girl to look at too. 🙂

I read an article online after I had my baby that suggested mothers should rest the first 3-6 weeks after giving birth. I think I felt like 60% better after two weeks but it took be about a month to really feel like myself again I remember I wanted to get out of the house soo bad but its nice to just take some time to rest and take care of yourself (and your baby of course) I am thinking back now and I really had no idea when I was pregnant how much of a toll the birth would take on my body! Its all worth it though. T.V. got old pretty quick but I just spent most of my down time snuggling with my little girl and took a lot of naps with her on my chest! After a couple more weeks walks became more appealing everything in moderation! I hope you are feeling 100 % really soon! Try to stay off your feet! 🙂

  13. Katie on January 21, 2012 at 2:21 pm

Happy Saturday love! Soon bed rest will be over ; )

I was on bed rest for 2.5 months , so I feel your pain! Sending you love!

  14. Negar M on January 21, 2012 at 2:26 pm

I don’t know how you make the Brown rice tortillas pliable. I tried and failed three packages worth!

I’m sorry to hear about the bed rest, but you could just buy a roomba….I had one when I lived in a ridiculously awesome large place with lots of carpet. I also had a scooba that made my bathroom and kitchen floor squeeky clean.

The rest can wait! Clean floors = healthy, happy puppy 🙂

    get well

    • Sara on January 21, 2012 at 7:41 pm

I puzzled over the rice tortilla issue too – they always broke up. I discovered a very short blast in the microwave (say 10 to 20 seconds) with a cup of water in there does the trick.

      • Negar M on January 22, 2012 at 12:04 pm

aaaahhhh! I’m going to brave the cold today for a much needed Trader Joe’s run, I will get some tortillas and try this. I microwaved them, but I only did it wrapped in a damp paper towel. I will make this work, I’m determined 🙂

        thank you

  16. JennP on January 21, 2012 at 2:30 pm

I was on full bed rest when I was pregnant with twins (which I fully adhered to) and ordered ‘lay low’ after my c-section (which didn’t really happen). I had done enough reading, TV watching and web-surfing during the pregnancy that I was pretty much ready to be back on my feet as soon as the epidural wore off! I was one impatient mama!

  17. Amber @ Bold, Busy, Blessed on January 21, 2012 at 2:32 pm

I love cilantro! Maybe I should try and go some myself since it’s such a survivor haha.

Hope you’re feeling better and keeping sane!

  18. Morgan @ Morganshines on January 21, 2012 at 2:33 pm

I can’t keep anything alive plant-wise…I get all into it and get bored within 48 hours and totally forget about them. Feel better!!

  19. Kristine @ Busy But Healthy on January 21, 2012 at 2:33 pm

I was on bed rest near the end of my pregnancy, as my blood pressure was getting high. Then of course, after the birth. I had a couple stiches, but my midwife told me not even to walk up and down the stairs? WTF? Really? I thought…stairs seem like no big deal. Regardless, if you do listen, you’ll heal that much faster with no issues later. Even though its tough. Hang in there!

  20. Jamie @Food in Real Life on January 21, 2012 at 2:35 pm

When did you get put on bedrest? Sorry to hear that- enjoy taking it easy and snuggling with your little girl.

  21. Anngela on January 21, 2012 at 3:07 pm

Everyone is different…I had a pretty easy delivery and I was up and running within 2 weeks to start training for a marathon. I ran it last weekend, the day before my daughter turned 5 months old 🙂 I had my doctors approval as well. Many people thought I was crazy but I didn’t do anything the doctor didn’t approve.

  22. Kelly @ Vegolosophy on January 21, 2012 at 3:10 pm

I was on bed rest for essentially a month and I thought I was going to go insane. I had my jaw broken so I couldn’t do anything and was stuck on a liquid diet…so not fun!! You really realize how important exercise and getting outside is to keeping your happiness and sanity lol 🙂

Hey Gina! I love reading your blog. You are so uplifting and I really enjoy visiting this site daily. I am about to join you on the couch (sans adorable baby) due to hip surgery this week. I have been anxious about have to lay low and not being able to continue my normal routine. Working out helps me keep my mental state in check. However, all of your posts recently help remind me that our bodies need down time and it’s necessary to heal. I think I will become a professional Kindle reader over the next few weeks! I’m sending good “feel better” thoughts your way….

  25. Karen on January 21, 2012 at 3:26 pm

Hi Gina, I am reading between the lines and wondering if you have mastitis. Yes, be sure to rest, take lots of warm baths. You may need to get a different style nursing bra or a larger size.

    Wishing you the best!

  26. Kaley on January 21, 2012 at 3:40 pm

I was on bed rest for the last 4 weeks of my pregnancy because my bp started creeping up. It was rough because I usually felt totally fine throughout the day, so it was hard just sitting around doing nothing when there were so many things I needed to do before the baby got here- we had just moved into a new house! I watched a lot of movies (got boring real quick), read, wrote thank you cards, and started working on the baby book. God forbid I ever get put on bedrest again, but if I do, I am going to teach myself how to knit baby things. Oh and one thing I wished I would have done more of when the baby was still napping all the time was organize pictures (I waited til she was almost 11 months and it took forever), and I also should have continued working on her baby book a little at a time.

  27. Catherine on January 21, 2012 at 3:46 pm

My bedrest cures have been getting someone to take me for drives in the car – the windows down, fresh air rushing through the car, sunlight – it helped so much.

Also Downtown Abbey will eat up hours and hours of your life in an extremely satisfying way – I say check it out. I also found that girlfriends loved being asked for help because it made them feel useful – laundry, dishes, errands – but it seems like you already have an amazing support network!

Tangerine juice sounds yummy, never heard of it before! Bed rest is never fun- I’ve never been on it other than when I was in the hospital post-surgery and I’m thankful that I haven’t because I would get stir-crazy! My fiance, family, and I joke how I am going to be the worst pregnant woman if I’m put on bed rest!

  31. Kaila @healthyhelperblog! on January 21, 2012 at 4:03 pm

I am sorry about the bed rest! That stinks! When I am injured I just think about the fact that the more I rest and recover the quicker I’ll be back out there doing the things I want to do!

  32. Colleen on January 21, 2012 at 4:09 pm

Oh, I feel for you! I broke a rib two summers ago, and basically anything that involved supporting my core (and breathing, and laughing, and walking, and rolling over in bed) hurt. I definitely got my money’s worth out of my streaming Netflix account that summer! I watched many seasons of Veronica Mars, Chuck, Bones, Angel, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It definitely made me realize how much I rely on exercise endorphins to maintain my energy, mood, and general well-being!

  33. Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga on January 21, 2012 at 4:15 pm

The tangerine juice look so refreshing!

I am sorry to hear that you’re having to take it easy but yes, it’s smart to just lay as low as possible while you’re still healing, recovering and building that milk supply and your body is going through so many changes. It’s hard for me to just CHILL out, I can relate.

Always thinking of what’s next, what I am missing out doing, my to-do list is growing…but in the end, none of that matters unless you’re healthy and rested and so just tell yourself this too shall pass and pretty soon she’ll be crawling and you’ll never be able to sit down and rest again 🙂

  37. E on January 21, 2012 at 5:20 pm

I have been on bed rest and I took it rather literally – if I could do it lying down I figured it was ok. (No, not sex.) There are a lot of yogic stretches that you can do in bed! So stretch away with gentle twists, arms over the head stretches, ankle and wrist circles, and more.

Honestly, I find it gets painful to lie down for more than 8 hours or so. My back starts to ache from lack of motion. Stretch as much as you can, and use pillows to support yourself ergonomically – for example, when lying on your side, make sure there’s a pillow between your knees and 2 (or one doubled-over) under your head. If you lie on your tummy, place one under your pubic area to support your lower back. If you lie on your back, try bending your legs up at a 90 degree angle and placing a pillow under your knees so you’re supported and your knees are above your heart.

Also helpful – having a snuggly, furry buddy in bed next to you. 🙂

I hope that you feel better quickly. I was on bed rest during the pregnancies of children #2 & #3 for around a month each. Then this past Nov when the 3 children and I were in an accident I was put on bed rest after my surgery for 4 weeks. It was the worst 4 weeks of life I’ve experienced yet but I am very grateful that we all weren’t injured worse. My husband took a week off of work and then my Mom was able to come out, she lives 525 miles from us, for the other 3 weeks. The women from the playgroup that we are in delivered us dinners for 2 weeks which was helpful. I crocheted a lot, stalked people on Facebook, read, snuggled which ever child would sit still in the chair long enough with me, watched a lot of Netflix and enjoyed staring at my little ones as they napped in the chair with me.

Yes, although I’ve always been very active, I have high blood pressure (hereditary) and when we first discovered it, it was high enough for me to have a stroke (EEK) so I had to be basically on bed rest until the dr got it under control. I thought I was going to lose my mind!! Anyway, I did a lot of knitting for that time. If you don’t know how, hop on YouTube! Seriously, I taught myself and it’s honestly a really fun skill to have! 🙂
