Take it or leave it: the cape

I always get really excited for fall fashion. It’s kind of funny because we don’t even have a real “fall” here in Tucson. Heck, it’s 93* degrees today. It’s fun to wish though :/ However, it doesn’t get that cold here until later in the winter, so I end up spending most of winter in “fall” clothes- no heavy coats over here. [Which bums me out because I lust for a Burberry one. I digress…]

One of the mayjah styles this season is the cape, or capelet.

image Nordstrom

Last time I wore a cape, the Pilot told me I looked like a wizard.

I really do like the trend, though! It’s perfect for not-quite-freezing weather, and looks perfect with skinny jeans and boots or booties.

image Juicy

I love how you can dress them up or down, also pairing with tights, a skirt and booties, leggings and heels.. it’s pretty much going to be the fall “anything” jacket.

Tips:

-Since it’s fuller shaped, go with more snug on the bottom (tights, leggings, skinny jeans, pencil skirt) or you’ll be swimming in fabric.

-Try an unconventional color or print, but don’t go too cray cray. Winter white, plaid or camel are fun options.

-For 3/4 length sleeves, accessorize your wrists. With long sleeves, try an updo and conversational earrings (like super sparkly studs).

Bonus: I think I’ll be able to wear this one with my preg belly! Ballertastic.

So what do you think, friends? Take it or leave it?

Will you rock a cape this season?

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE them! I’m wanting a black one with a puffy neck so I can pair it with a cute white top and skinny jeans 🙂 classic!!!!

  2. Jessica @ Dairy Free Betty on September 14, 2011 at 3:53 pm

Not for me! I live in a jeans and hoodies kind of place – this is way to fashion forward for here! 🙂 haha

  3. Stacy on September 14, 2011 at 3:55 pm

I just bought one a few days ago and I’m stoked for it to get cool enough in NY to rock it out!

  4. Jackie @ Baking Charms on September 14, 2011 at 3:55 pm

I wish I could! But every time I try one on it just doesn’t look right… not the best option for girls with large chests!

    • Jackie Smith on September 14, 2011 at 4:00 pm

I’m with you, Jackie! I end up looking like a shelf.

    • AJ on September 14, 2011 at 4:05 pm

Agreed! I keep trying to make it work, and it just kinda flops on me. Such a bummer!

    • Sarah on September 14, 2011 at 4:37 pm

      I have the same issue…:(

  5. Shayla @ The Good Life on September 14, 2011 at 3:55 pm

I don’t own one (yet!) but I really like the look and think they’re super stylish and cute! However, I think the hubby would think I’m trying to fly away and be superwoman 😉

  6. Cait @ Cait hates Cake on September 14, 2011 at 3:55 pm

I like the shorter capes like you showed examples of. I’m not a fan of the longer ones, though. I saw a picture of Sarah Jessica Parker wearing a long red one and she looked like Little Red Riding Hood.

  7. Shelly on September 14, 2011 at 3:56 pm

This works well for me b/c I a) have an amazing long cape style coat- it’s bright red and I bought it from the yard sale of a little old lady. and b) finally live somewhere cold enough to wear it- Maine!

  8. Holly @ The Runny Egg on September 14, 2011 at 3:58 pm

    Leave it. 🙂

  9. Suzi @ Confessions of a Fitness Instructor on September 14, 2011 at 4:03 pm

I’m not a big fan of the cape, I’ll stick with my vinyasa wraps – they’re close enough for me 🙂

  10. Jessica @ Sushi and Sit-Ups on September 14, 2011 at 4:06 pm

I really like the first one, but I don’t know if I could pull it off. The rest just look like really baggy coats.

  11. Liz @ Southern Charm on September 14, 2011 at 4:06 pm

As of now, I say leave it … unless it’s that Burberry one. But at the same time, once people start rocking them, I know my mind will change.
FabFitFun put the capes on her top trend list too, so like I said, I’ll eventually change my mind 🙂

  12. Leanne (Bride to Mrs.) on September 14, 2011 at 4:07 pm

I love the black express one!!!! :d

  13. Brendali on September 14, 2011 at 4:08 pm

I love the cape! I think its stylish and fabulous! I also am loving ponchos! H&M had a gorgeous knitted poncho for twenty dollars!!!! Cant wait to rock it with skinny jeans and riding boots!

  14. Ashley O. @ The Vegetable Life on September 14, 2011 at 4:10 pm

Not for me at all. I would feel like a wizard (and probably look like one too!). I’ll stick with my traditional jacket please! 🙂

  15. katie on September 14, 2011 at 4:13 pm

I have a cape-jacket thingy and love it! I always get compliments on it too 🙂

  16. Joelle on September 14, 2011 at 4:14 pm

I just bought one like the Express one, in olive green. I am not looking forward to fall but I am looking forward to wearing that!

  17. Caroline on September 14, 2011 at 4:15 pm

I’m a Florida girl so I feel you on the fall attire in the winter thing. I have one of the classic quilted Burberry jackets that I LOVE for cooler months. It is pretty lightweight so it’s perfect for the mild winters we have, I’m sure it would be great in AZ too!

  18. Hillary on September 14, 2011 at 4:18 pm

I really like this trend. I don’t think I can pull it off in jackets, but I think the trend in sweaters is a lot cuter and definitely more wearable! I got this in two colors from H&M and really like it. Perfect with skinnies or leggings, wedges, cute boots, or flats. The tie at the waist also gives it some shape which is always nice. http://www.hm.com/us/product/93813?article=93813-A#article=93813-C

  19. lindsey on September 14, 2011 at 4:20 pm

^^Hillary, thanks for that link. Those are adorbs.

I’m torn on the trend, though I love that one from Express.

  20. Happy When Not Hungry on September 14, 2011 at 4:22 pm

I love capes! It’s funny because I lived in Florence, Italy back in 2004 and capes were huge there!!! I thought they were nuts, but they were just really really ahead of us fashion-wise 🙂

  21. Chelsa on September 14, 2011 at 4:23 pm

love it! i have been looking for one but don’t want to spend Burberry prices on this trend. I’m thinking that my limit is $250 on one of these. I do have a Burberry wrap around cape/shawl thing that I bought at a Nordstrom sale years ago but it’s difficult to keep it in place while wearing it.

  22. Tina on September 14, 2011 at 4:26 pm

LEAVE. IT. back away from the cape. Now.

  23. Jennie on September 14, 2011 at 4:27 pm

Nothing wrong with looking like a wizard (I just typed ‘lizard’… lol)… hello, Hermione!

  24. Lauren J on September 14, 2011 at 4:34 pm

I can’t help but feel that unless you have just the right look it’s got granny written all over it. Of course I also can’t help but picture a time long ago when capes were in and I had a fleece one with a fur collar that I wore over more formal dresses for special occasions. I found it the other day and thought: I don’t care who said it was, THAT was never in style! haha!

  25. Gina @ Running to the Kitchen on September 14, 2011 at 4:37 pm

I’m gonna have to go with leave it on this one. I agree with the pilot, I immediately think “wizard” when I see these too.

  26. Sami on September 14, 2011 at 4:38 pm

hey, you mentioned booties in your post…where would one find some cute ones? Also, have you ever done a post on fall fashion shoes? id love to hear your opinion on what is cute and stylish! I love your taste 🙂 where do you find the cutest boots? like ankle boots?

    • Fitnessista on September 14, 2011 at 9:21 pm

aldo and dillard’s are my go to shoe places 🙂 i’ll totally do a post on fall shoes!

  27. Rachel on September 14, 2011 at 4:38 pm

I grabbed an Anthro baby fleece (on the inside) cape on sale last spring and am so excited to be able to wear it now. Love capes! They flatter Everyone. And I think they look equally awesome with a sweet wide leg trouser too.

  28. Ash @ Good Taste Healthy Me on September 14, 2011 at 4:40 pm

ehhh i say leave it. I feel like it will be in this year and then gone by next.

  29. Anna @ On Anna's Plate on September 14, 2011 at 4:43 pm

As a southern girl, one of the (few) things that I LOVED when I lived in Pennsylvania was having an ACTUAL fall!! Fall clothes are the best.

  30. Megan @ The Detoxinista on September 14, 2011 at 4:47 pm

Ha, I would totally feel like a wizard! Definitely NOT a trend for me…

It’s not chilly enough in LA, anyway! (not that it stops everyone out here from wearing Ugg boots) 😉

  31. G on September 14, 2011 at 4:51 pm

Leave it. It’s basically a fancy poncho and I don’t do ponchos.

Kudos to those who can pull it off though.

    • Fitnessista on September 14, 2011 at 9:21 pm

      i love ponchos! haha

  32. Jessica on September 14, 2011 at 4:55 pm

HA! The BF and I were just talking about capes last night (while I made him watch Rachel Zoe Project) and I said “capes are in this season” and he said “capes? like superman?”. Although cute, don’t think I’ll be rocking one this season. I feel it’s going to be a one season trend, and I like to buy things a little more versatile that I can wear beyond one season.

  33. Katheryn on September 14, 2011 at 4:59 pm

Leave it! I really don’t like this look. Am I trying to be a wizard or a super hero? Totally strange fashion to me.

  34. Julie (A Case of the Runs) on September 14, 2011 at 5:04 pm

I also think this is a strange trend, and I often am too friggin warm. Jackets are enough for me.

  35. Laura on September 14, 2011 at 5:15 pm

Not quite my look. I tend to rock the classic pea coat.

  36. Alyssa @ Don't Look Down on September 14, 2011 at 5:19 pm

I’m going with leave it. I definitely don’t think I would be able to pull off a cape. Actually I’m having a vision right now of me putting one on and then running around in circles pretending to fly circa 5 year old Alyssa.
I also don’t think it would be practical living in the midwest. In the fall I mostly just stick with a light fleece jacket or cardigan, but when it gets cold I need a winter coat and that cape thing would just not cut it. The wind would blow all up in their and be freeeeeezing.

  37. Trainer Kjirsten @ Balanced Healthy Life on September 14, 2011 at 5:29 pm

I think these are cute, but like regular coats better! Plus I will be able to wear a regular jaket again next season while the cape might be out of style!

  38. Jen @familyfoodfitnessandfun on September 14, 2011 at 5:56 pm

I love them! The closest piece of clothing I own that looks “cape-ish” is my Savasana Wrap from Lululemon. I wrap myself in it every morning when I take the kids to school.

    • Fitnessista on September 14, 2011 at 9:19 pm

i have a savasana wrap too, and loooooooove it

  39. Laura @ Meet Virginia on September 14, 2011 at 5:58 pm

I like them, but they just aren’t for me!

  40. Erin @ Girl Gone Veggie on September 14, 2011 at 6:21 pm

I love these! I’ve always wanted a cape but have been too nervous to try them, it seems like its one of those things I always see in magazines but never on the streets. I could see one with skinny jeans and some boots looking adorable!

  41. Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga on September 14, 2011 at 6:48 pm

I think the cape look is cute but not super practical for me because I like to have my arms either in something or out of something, i.e. in a sweater so they are covered or it’s warm enough to wear a tshirt so they’re bare.

Something about them just sort of under a cape…I dunno, I guess I’m quirky but whenever I have a cape on, I am always trying to find the arm holes…lol

But the styles are cute and perfect for a preggie belly! 🙂

  42. Casey @ Pocket Full of Sunshine on September 14, 2011 at 6:59 pm

I kinda like them but I’m so short they never hit in the right place! Story of my life. Sigh.

  43. Nicole @ Giraffelegs on September 14, 2011 at 7:25 pm

take it take it take it!!! lovin’ on the cape trend, want to buy one asap but I am on a college budget..aka poor

  44. Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin on September 14, 2011 at 7:31 pm

I think they’re cute! As soon as I saw that Burberry cape, I fell in love. Of course I *would* go for the most expensive one. 😛

  45. CheezyK on September 14, 2011 at 7:52 pm

LOVE those capes! Hope that means they’re heading ‘down under’ next Winter. Not sure they’d be much good to me with Summer coming up, although Melbourne being Melbourne I’d get use out of a light weight one pretty much all year round!

  46. Addison on September 14, 2011 at 8:18 pm

The wizard comment cracked me up! My mom once bought a pair of brown clogs and my dad told her they looked like Reindeer feet. She could never wear them again once that image was in her head. I’ve never been a big fan of the cape/capelet, but I kind of like the black one from Express. The slightly cinched waist would be more flattering on me.

  47. blossjoss on September 14, 2011 at 8:30 pm

I think leave it. Thought I do kinda like the one in the first pic. She can pull it off. I doubt I could. And I would have no good occasion for it. I also haven’t seen anyone wear one so my opinions could change. This seems like one of those trends that will be gone next year. I’ll keep it classic with a cardigan!

  48. Shelley on September 14, 2011 at 9:23 pm

I leave it 🙂 I think they just looks so shapeless. Maybe thats me though i bet some people can totally rock the .
BTW isn’t the savansaa wrap from lulu just like a scarf? or is it a body wrap thingamajiga??

    • Fitnessista on September 14, 2011 at 9:24 pm

      it’s like a jacket

  49. Eates-A-Lot on September 14, 2011 at 11:10 pm

I own 4 capes…. all vintage… 1 my grandmother made for my mom when she was in jr high.. so it’s about 40 years old and it has a hood. I wear it fall/spring. I have another cape that was my grandmothers, it’s black with beading.. it was her ‘dressy’ cape. I have another that is wool with a scarf and hood attached and is red. it’s my ‘little red riding hood cape.’ It’s the best winter jacket I’ve ever owned ( I live in Pgh, it gets chilly). I also get to wear black elbow gloves because the sleeves are a little shorter than most jackets. Finally I just recently picked up from a thrift store and old R.O.T.C WVU cape.. it’s gold on the inside and navy on the outside with ‘WVU ROTC’ around the collar ANNNDDD the right shoulder pins up. it’s sweet. I wear that to WVU games.. I love capes. I wear them every season but summer…

  50. Shaya (Eye Girl Eats) on September 15, 2011 at 1:28 am

I think they’re totally cute and stylish! However, not a fan of the above-pictured Juicy cape. It looks like her arms are discombobulated from her shoulders! The more ‘poncho’ style is much more flattering I think.
