Take Two

Hi guys! How’s your day been? Hope you’ve had a lovely Friday 🙂

We have SUCCESS!

cake (2)

Tres Leches came out exactly the way it needed to after last night’s little fail. Just needs whipped topping, cinnamon garnish and a strawberry on the side 😉

Sangria success:

sangria

I got fresh OJ from the Main Squeeze to add to the Sangria when I went to get a smoothie with Jeni. I *could* have made my own fresh orange juice, but I have so many other things to make and didn’t want to mess around with the juicer.

Like tamales:

masa

(That’s the masa, which I’ll fill the corn husks with, along with green chilies and cheese)

and enchiladas (two types: vegetarian and chicken), queso, chop veggies for the salad and guacamole.

Yeah.

A dinner party for 20 people is no joke… especially when your house is less than sparkling. I’ve got my work cut out for me!

Another thing..

I think our dinner table is way too small.

house

Is that an excuse to buy a new one??

Heh heh.

Anyway,

IT’S FASHION FRIDAY!!!

Here’s what I’m loving this week:

Military Glam 🙂

Think cargo pants, camouflage, polished hardware, study fabrics, deep green and earthy tones. Military style is cool because it adds a tough edge to an outfit and looks awesome with extra girly flair, like sparkles or feathers.

Like these shoes:

Lace-up front boots:

Outerwear: (I have a crush on this jacket)

Shirts:

Skinny cargos:

Dresses:

Structured

Handbags:

So what do you think?

Will you rock the military-inspired trend this fall?

I’m gonna get back to cooking, getting the casa ready and plan to sneak in a workout later tonight.

Enjoy your evening!

G

Something to think: Don’t let failure disappoint and discourage you… let it motivate and push you to do better the second time. Cake lessons translate to life lessons 😉

i ADORE those boots! seriously, i have been in desperate need of some rockin’ new shoes for some time now 🙂 hope you have fun tonight!

  2. Allison @ Food For Healing on July 23, 2010 at 6:25 pm

you might as well get a new dining table if you plan on having large groups over for dinner, it would be worth it, and a better excuse to host more!

i personnally wont be sportin’ those clothes, i dont think they would suit me at all. I am more of a nice jeans kind of girl i guess.
I love heals, but i have feet problems and can’t wear nice shoes, been thinking about gettin surgery on my feet though. not sure hmm.

  3. Wendy on July 23, 2010 at 6:26 pm

LOVE the utility dress. And the cake looks delish – can almost smell it right through the screen!

  4. Carrie on July 23, 2010 at 6:28 pm

I don’t even *have* a dining room table. Or a dining room. Thank you small apartment. Instead we have desks. Not exactly dinner party friendly. 🙁 But you should definitely get a hugenormous table!

  5. Tina on July 23, 2010 at 6:31 pm

Yay for a successful cake! I think the military trend is one thing I can’t get into. It’s just because I love brighter colors.

  6. Nicole @ Geek Turned Athlete on July 23, 2010 at 6:32 pm

Um yes, definite excuse to buy a new table!!

I’ve never had a vegetarian tamale! Or a tamale with green chili in it. I am impressed that you know what green chili is b/c most people who I’ve met have no idea unless they are from NM. Please don’t tell me you used canned though!! I almost broke up with my boyfriend now husband when I found a can of green chili in his cabinet!

    • Fitnessista on July 23, 2010 at 6:35 pm

i’m from arizona 🙂 definitely know what a green chili is, and use fresh 😉

  7. erin m.@well-in-la on July 23, 2010 at 6:33 pm

I am stalking those J-Brand cargos… will post/email when I find a sale on them! Good luck with your dinner party! We eat on (embarrassing) TV trays when guests come over. Must drag the man to Z-Gallery for a table + chairs!

    • Fitnessista on July 23, 2010 at 6:36 pm

YES let me know when you find a deal!

  8. Wendy on July 23, 2010 at 6:38 pm

Hey Gina, how did you get so many blog readers? I want morrrrre! 😛

    • Fitnessista on July 23, 2010 at 6:48 pm

how long have you been blogging? i’ve been doing this thang for about two years but in the begining, my mom was the only one who read it 🙂 the longer you do it, your audience will grow. i’m very blessed to have made awesome blog friends over the past two years 🙂
i checked out your bloggy and even though i’m not an expert by any means, here are some tips:
-get a ‘.com’ instead of wordpress.com (it’s like $10) and makes it easier for people to remember
      -take pics with no flash
-no more butt cheek pics. haha

  9. Sassy Molassy on July 23, 2010 at 6:49 pm

I love that Calvin Klein dress. SO chic yet comfy looking!

  10. Lauren @ BIOCHEMISTA on July 23, 2010 at 6:51 pm

I love the outfits! I’m really diggin’ that jacket too! 🙂 I love the way you can play down those outfits for day time then throw on a jacket and a few accessories and totally make it night-appropriate 😉 LOVE!

I love sangria. To make a super quick recipe (and really good!) I combine red wine (I like zin the best) plus a splash of triple sec, splash OJ, teeeeny bit of fresh lime juice and frozen fruit. My sister ads stevia but I like it the way it is 🙂

    Have a great night!!! XOXOX

  11. Ilana on July 23, 2010 at 7:05 pm

my dining room table is not in the least bit big enough … I always make my dinner parties “buffet style” and place strategic seating clusters around the dining and living rooms.

As far as military style, I dig the structure but I’m never much of a “theme” dresser. I like my clothes to be simple and easy… I dunno, I adore fashion and love clothes to death, and I have all kinds of crayzay stuff in the closet, but I’ve got all the right stuff undressed so I never feel like I have to dress up too much to look fantastic. Umm…I gotta big egoooooo!

  12. Wendy on July 23, 2010 at 7:06 pm

I started it this week. Way too impatient, eh?!
Thanks for the advice! You’re right…would probably be a good idea to reign in my weirdness a bit. Haha!!

  13. Jessica @ Rawtumn on July 23, 2010 at 7:23 pm

Yay for cake success! Glad you didn’t give up! 😉 Absolutely loving that jacket from Express. I think I need it. =x

  14. RhodeyGirl on July 23, 2010 at 7:29 pm

My dad would be so STOKED to have your tres leches cake. It is his FAVORITE! It looks amazing Gina- I can’t wait to see how the party turns out! Good luck!

  15. christina cadden on July 23, 2010 at 7:32 pm

Glad the cake came out! It looks delicious!

  16. Kristina on July 23, 2010 at 7:36 pm

I LOVE lace up boots… I have a pair that I always look forward to the fall / winter to wear… they look FIERCE 😉

totally a great reason to get a new table! I love the way you think – we’d have FUUUUN shopping together!

  17. Exercise and Eat on July 23, 2010 at 7:38 pm

I love that shirt from Saks! I will def be rocking that trend:)

  18. Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine on July 23, 2010 at 7:41 pm

Mmm, sangria! I can’t wait to see how this party turns out! I’m absolutely obsessed with that jacket right now. Seriously restraining myself from ordering it online…so cute though!

  19. Michelle @ Give Me the Almond Butter on July 23, 2010 at 7:56 pm

I’m guessing your don’t have those extensions for your table to make it bigger then.

I don’t have the most feminine features, so sadly the military style makes me look a bit too much like a man! hahaha. But I don’t mind it other than that.

  20. Anya @ Fitness & Sunshine on July 23, 2010 at 8:15 pm

I love the blazer, it looks gorg <3 I like the bags too. Not sure about dresses and pants miliary-style though, I'm just not sure if it would work well for me.

  21. Laura (B Foxy Fitness) on July 23, 2010 at 8:23 pm

Whoa, girlie, you were rockin’ and rollin’ today! A dinner party for 20?! Sounds ambitious, but also like a lot of fun! I love love love the military style jackets. I know fall is a ways away, but…I. must. have. now.

I really enjoyed your “something to think about”: Cake lessons translate to life lessons. Clever and true! 🙂 Have an awesome party!

  22. holly @ couchpotatoathlete.wordpress.com on July 23, 2010 at 8:24 pm

I love love love that blazer and both of those dresses! So beautiful. You totally “need” a bigger dinner table — I want one of those big square ones that fit 8 people.

    • Fitnessista on July 23, 2010 at 8:50 pm

      that’s what i want, too! 🙂

      • holly @ couchpotatoathlete.wordpress.com on July 23, 2010 at 9:49 pm

I just can’t decide if I like the higher counter-height dining tables or the regular height. Hopefully one day we’ll have a house big enough for one of each! 🙂

  23. Liz @ Tip Top Shape on July 23, 2010 at 8:29 pm

That cake looks delicious! I’ve never had tres leche cake before but it sounds like something I would like! On a totally random side note- your house looks so adorable!

  24. Krystina on July 23, 2010 at 8:32 pm

I love that jacket and F21 dress.

  25. Julie @pickley pear on July 23, 2010 at 8:38 pm

Militarygear is super cute, though I’m not sure I can pull it off?! Your dinner is going to be fabulous tomorrow!! Can’t wait to see the finished products.

  26. Kelsey on July 23, 2010 at 8:39 pm

Omg i am in love with that jacket!! So beautiful. Have fun at your party! Love your blog <3

  27. Rachael on July 23, 2010 at 9:04 pm

Tres leches was one of my favorite discoveries when I worked in Mexico – so, so good!

Military style – I already live in army navy surplus sweaters, cargos and boots. Not so much for the fashion aspect, but more because I live in an unheated house in winter and spend a lot of time doing farm-esque chores. Maybe I’ll bring a dress into the mix and be stylish for once!

  28. Haley on July 23, 2010 at 9:35 pm

That sangria looks wonderful! Have you ever posted your tamale recipe? I would be very interested in trying it =)

  29. lindsay on July 23, 2010 at 9:56 pm

That looks amazing! Great job. Have a wonderful evening!

  30. Sarra H on July 23, 2010 at 10:19 pm

i LOVE this week’s “fashion friday”!!! i love that dress! and those shoes! and that jacket! haha :P. You have a beautiful home, and I totally agree that a huge dinner party justifies buying a new table 😉

  31. Diana @ VEGeneration on July 23, 2010 at 10:23 pm

I LOVE that Express blazer too!! $80 though :'(

    • Fitnessista on July 24, 2010 at 9:37 am

i know! i showed it to the pilot and said “don’t you think i need this jacket” and he said “like a hole in the head” hahaha

  32. Melissa (MelissaLikesToEat) on July 23, 2010 at 11:07 pm

Great job on the cake!! I feel you….I’m feeding 19 people tomorrow night. 🙂

    • Fitnessista on July 24, 2010 at 9:37 am

gah! i’ll be thinking about you! 🙂

  33. Nicole on July 24, 2010 at 12:33 am

Love love love how you make all these awesome Mexican dishes! I’d love to learn how to make tamales, they’re seriously my all time favorite creation ever. I just never eat them anymore ’cause we don’t feel like buying them from the store + my hubby says even his madre de Mexico doesn’t know how to make ’em. I will learn.. one day.. like Fitnessista, I too will make tamales.

    Buy a new table! 😀

  34. Angela on July 24, 2010 at 12:49 am

I love that jacket! I think I need to buy it!

  35. Carrie on July 24, 2010 at 1:13 am

Your dinner party sounds ahhhhhmazin…. can we come? 🙂 7:30-ish? 😉

Seriously, I can see you rockin’ the Forever 21 olive dress. That would look great on you.

All the best on your party… nothing like a Mexican menu to rock a summer fiesta!!!! 🙂

  36. Mimi on July 24, 2010 at 1:55 am

I’m glad your second attempt at the cake was a success! I love Fashion Friday, but personally I’m not a huge fan of military-wear. I think it’s because I know I can’t rock it NEARLY as well as our real men in uniform.

    • Fitnessista on July 24, 2010 at 9:36 am

      amen to that 🙂

  37. Jackie (Peaces of Earth) on July 24, 2010 at 3:29 am

Sangriaaa, mmmmmm! There’s a stand where I live that sells vegan tamales (yes, I live in Ocean Beach, San Diego and they sell vegan tamales on the street. There is also a vegan hot dog cart) and they are so good, a little dry but with sauce, perrrfecctt. I’ve only ever had it once, but I think I need to make a stop ASAP!

  38. Little Bookworm on July 24, 2010 at 5:47 am

The cake looks great! Good luck with the dinner party! 🙂

  39. gigi on July 24, 2010 at 7:27 am

Love the military look! I’ve never had tamales but I’m gonna have to try to make some soon

  40. Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin on July 24, 2010 at 9:03 am

I’m not a fan of cargo print or anything *too* military inspired, but I gotta say I love that Express jacket and Marc Jacobs bag!

I have an H&M military jacket that I bought a few years ago and never wore. I might have to pull out for this fall!

  41. Jessica @ How Sweet on July 24, 2010 at 10:20 am

I can’t wait to hear how the party turned out! Glad the cake came together. 🙂

  42. Laura J. on July 24, 2010 at 11:26 am

We had that same dinner table and every time we had people over we’d have to squish and cram. People were getting a side of elbow while they ate. No good, ha 🙂 We got a new table this past weekend tho– problem solved 🙂 I say go get your newer, bigger table! With all the dinner parties you have, I’d say it’s a good investment 🙂

  43. Lynn @ My Sweet Season on July 24, 2010 at 12:10 pm

Mmm I’ve never had tres leche before. Tell me how it goes! 😀

  44. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) on July 24, 2010 at 1:22 pm

Well by now you’ve had your dinner party and can’t wait for the details!

Oh and juicing and dealing with that…girl…I have never been able to embrace juicing because the cleanup just kills me! I have a breville in stainless steel and for some reason, it just takes me forever to get that thing really clean. It’s like pulp just gets stuck in that filter and NEVER comes off. It just seem like soooo much work for a glass of juice that I suck down is 23 seconds LOL

The skinny cargos, J Brand, you featured…super cute!! I just bought a pair of jeggings (jeans + leggings) from Urban Outfitters that were a new-to-me find 🙂

  45. Jill on July 24, 2010 at 1:34 pm

Love the jacket and the tres leches looks absolutely amazing!

Do you think you might post the tamales recipe sometime?

Have a wonderful dinner party, I’m confident it will be the perfect evening!

  46. Ellen@FirednFabulous on July 24, 2010 at 2:35 pm

I am all about military, and will most definitely rock it in the fall. It’s interesting how world events influence fashion, huh? Hope your party was fab—I KNOW it was!

  47. Lauren @ BIOCHEMISTA on July 24, 2010 at 3:29 pm

Hi Gina! I went for it and bought the TurboFire series thanks to your suggestion! I love it! I linked your clip of doing the wkout here: http://www.biochemista.com/2010/07/im-beasttt.html

    Thanks again chica 😉

Girl, I am about ready to hop on a plane to Georgia JUST to go to one of your dinner parties. Yum.

And I love the military glam style! I have my eye on a rockin’ Utility jacket at J.Crew this fall… 😀

    xo

  49. Brynne on July 24, 2010 at 9:09 pm

LOVE the J-Brand cargos! And love my 45% discount on them. Military colors are so in, as well as the basic style. I’m loving the army green, navy, slate gray, and brown that are all in this fall 🙂

    • Fitnessista on July 24, 2010 at 10:01 pm

how do you get 45% off?? please tell 🙂

  50. claire! on July 24, 2010 at 10:46 pm

Omg- just bought those exact jbrand military skinny jeans TODAY at nordstrom rack…for 20 dollars. Nordstrom rack is no joke, my friend. Can’t wait to rock them with wedges and a slouchy grey long sweater for fall– or tall riding boots for winter!! Your mexican feast looks outstanding- hope it was fun!

    • Fitnessista on July 24, 2010 at 10:57 pm

what?! ahhh i wish we had one close by 🙂 enjoy your awesome skinny cargos!
