6/9: Meals and fitness for the week

Hi friends 🙂 Hope you’re having an amazing weekend and that my Summer Shape Up friends are ready to start week 2 with a BANG. Plan and prep today, and take a look at the workout calendar to get an idea for this week’s workouts.

Friday night, the Pilot and I had a great date night together. We had dinner at The Abbey, which is one of our favorite spots. They serve comfort food with a modern flair (always a breakfast-for-dinner and sandwich option, in addition to the unique cheese boards, entrees and desserts) and while it still feels a little on the nicer side (for Tucson), it’s casual enough to bring Liv with us. She’s a huge fan of the pumpernickel bread they serve with sea salt and butter 😉

This time it was just Tom and myself, and we used a Groupon I’d recently purchased. The Groupon included wine, an appetizer (we got the artichoke dip) and two entrees (I chose the scallops, which were perfection). We also got dessert… even though we were stuffed to the brim, the German chocolate cake sundae sounded too good to pass up.

After dinner, we went to Sky Box where an 80s cover band, cleverly named “80s and Gentlemen,” was performing. We had margaritas, danced and people-watched. Since the Pilot had been flying nights, it was nice to be able to hang out and catch up on the week’s events.

Yesterday I taught all day, and I’m always excited to see what adventures the Pilot and Liv get into since it’s his day home with her while I work. Usually they’re go to her gym class or meet up with friends, and when I came home for my lunch break, I saw that the Pilot had taken Liv out to get a splash pool with a waterfall.

He had it all set up, propped up our huge umbrella to give her some shade,

and Oliv was splashing and LOVING life.

Nana had stopped by to drop off my contact lenses (thank you, nana!), so we all enjoyed a shish kabob lunch the Pilot grilled for us.

A perfect summer day.

Here’s what I have on the fitness menu for the week:

Sunday: Teach Zumba

Monday: CrossFit

Tuesday: OFF

Wednesday: Teach Zumba

Thursday: Teach DJ dance, Workout 2

Friday: OFF

Saturday: Teach World Beat, Zumba and Barre (whew!)

For our meals, I’m going to use a lot of the recipes from Week 2 of Summer Shape Up. I recently rekindled my love with breakfast cookie dough cereal -I always adore it in the warmer months- and am excited to make some coconut curry in the slow cooker on a work day.

What’s on the fitness and food menu for you this week? Remember to take a little time to plan and prep today. Set yourself up for success!

Hope you have a happy Sunday <3

See ya later with some pics from the day.

xoxo

Gina

    Inflatable pools FTW.
In college my girlfriends and I would purchase one, fill it up and just sit there (with floaties) and drink wine coolers. Pretty much the best way to relax after finals, or on a weekend. 🙂

    • Karissa on June 9, 2013 at 1:27 pm

Ha ha that is incredibly awesome… I think I may steal this idea this summer! 🙂

Looking forward to another great week of Summer Shape Up! A couple of questions… How long is the steady state cardio on Friday? What is a “Wild Card” and how much time? I’m already seeing results! Can’t say enough “thank you’s” to you! 🙂

    • Fitnessista on June 9, 2013 at 1:53 pm

Yay, I’m so glad! The wild card is your choice! Any amount of time up to an hour. Friday, try to go for 30-45 min

haha Your dog looks like she’s loving life in that picture of her in the shade.

Sounds like a great weekend! And busy upcoming week of workouts. I’m traveling for work this week, so my plan is to pack everything I’ll need so I can workout at the hotel gym OR just in my hotel room.

  7. Ali @ Peaches and Football on June 9, 2013 at 1:18 pm

Bella looks like she’s loving life right now too. Great picture. 🙂

Glad you had such a wonderful date night. It’s hard to get those in with a little one but very important. I also am now dying for some shish kabobs and I just went to the grocery store! Might have to add those ingredients to the shopping list for next week.

I’ve been reading your blog for a while but never commented! Is it too late to sign up for the Summer Shape-up? I would love to join if possible. Thanks!!

  11. Jenna on June 9, 2013 at 1:52 pm

Finished week 1 of summer shape up yesterday and I’m seriously feeling so good. More energetic, positive and just better overall. This is just what I needed to get my eats cleaned up and get back into a more consistent and varied exercise routine. Thanks so much for doing this Gina! I’m super excited to start week two. 🙂

  12. Britt on June 9, 2013 at 2:28 pm

On your off days what kind of “active recovery” do you do or do you completely rest that day? 🙂 your work/ teaching schedule looks Intense!

    • Fitnessista on June 9, 2013 at 3:12 pm

i usually don’t do anything on those days since i’m wicked sore. today i’m just lounging around until zumba since yesterday was a doozy

  13. Laura B on June 9, 2013 at 2:30 pm

Just finished workout 2! Yesterday was a rest day for me. I was bummed I couldn’t do a pike. Something to work on I guess! Had a hard time with the leg lifts too because the bench I was holding onto wouldn’t stay down. Overall, it was great, though. Super sweaty! I added on the original barre workout since I only did weights twice last week. Hopefully I’ll manage to squeeze in three times this week!

  14. Rosie on June 9, 2013 at 2:55 pm

Such fun in the sun! It’s winter here in New Zealand but I guess there’s no harm in starting my summer shape up a little this year is there? Please sign me up too. Thanks 🙂

    • Amanda on June 10, 2013 at 2:09 am

Snap! I’m in NZ too, but the shape up’s good motivation to stay on track during the darker months. Six-pack in a sweater! 🙂

  15. Kristen on June 9, 2013 at 2:55 pm

Finished up week 1 and more than ready to conquer week 2!

I’m with Liv on the pumpernickel. Love that stuff 🙂

That is such a cute little pool! And omg Bella looks so happy!

  21. Emily on June 9, 2013 at 5:38 pm

Did SO. MUCH. meal prepping today! Chopped greens and all kinds of veggies for salads, made a Thai chicken/peanut/cabbage chopped “salad,” made a few jars of raspberry vanilla overnight oats, chopped up some cauliflower to make buffalo bites, and made some steak and veggie kabobs to throw on the grill for quick dinners. I feel like all I’ve done today is chop/cut things! Lol, but I know it will make the rest of the week easy peasy 🙂

I completed week 1 and I loved it. There was the perfect mix of hard/intense workouts and steady state cardio. This is my first time doing the whole “virtual support” thing and I’ll be honest I was skeptical. But I LOVE it. It has given me a ton of motivation. Thanks for putting all of the time into this. I love it and I’m already feeling better. !!!!! ps ill be stopping at Target soon, I love that baby pool!!

  25. Lucie@FitSwissChick on June 9, 2013 at 7:19 pm

I need to get my hands on that breakfast cookie dough!

Super stoked to begin SSU Week 2! Killed it yesterday and did some bonus abs before a BBQ where we broke out our own splash pool for the little ones. So. Much. Fun. Squeezed a 45-minute yoga flow in for today’s active recovery along with a family walk we had to cut short (the pooch is nursing a bum leg and I blanked and left the house in my Rainbows…not the best footwear for pushing the kiddos around our super hilly neighborhood…duh). Can’t wait to hear how Crossfit goes. Am so itching to try it!!

  29. Cara on June 9, 2013 at 10:26 pm

Loved week 1 of SSU and can’t wait to tackle this week! I headed out for an easy 45min hike with my dog this morning and then a yoga session to stretch and mentally prepare for this weeks arse kicking;) I just finished prepping turkey muffins and sweet quinoa muffins for easy grab and go snacking! Both recipes are new to me and I’m loving them both!

I still need to try breakfast cookies and that cereal sounds amazing. We literally have NOTHING for breakfast in the morning so it should be interesting!!

That kiddie pool is adorable…I’m surprised Bella wasn’t jumping right in. Does she like water? My pup makes a bee line for any body of water, so I’m sure she would be right in there splashing around if I got one of those for my home.

  43. Becca on June 10, 2013 at 10:29 am

I’m gonna try Workout 2 tonight! Yesterday was a 10k, and for this week I’ve got your Workout 2 for strength, spinning, and a half marathon…should be fun. 🙂 All I prepped for the week so far were my veggies– broccoli, carrots, and squash stir-fried with ginger and jalapeño.

  45. Ruthie on June 10, 2013 at 12:04 pm

Got all out of whack w/schedule and check-ins last week so only officially ended week 1 as of yesterday. Ended up having to shift Friday’s steady state tempo blast to Saturday AM (on the spin bike) and Saturday’s scheduled stuff to yesterday (HIIT part I did random stuff on an aerobic step). Completely wore myself out and slept like a rock!

  46. Tracy on June 10, 2013 at 12:34 pm
