7/13: Friday Faves

This candle:

Bamboo candle

I almost always have a candle burning, and picked that one up at the BX last weekend for $4. It smells clean and lovely.

Baby’s first hummus. I made Liv a plain hummus for dinner last night (just chickpeas, water, a little oregano and garlic) and she went crazy for it. We’ve got another hummus lover in the house 🙂

Hummus

After I scooped out Liv’s plain version, I added much more garlic, some salt, cumin, cayenne, tahini and lemon juice for nana and myself.

Red pants:

Outfit

Totally late to the party on this one, but I’m excited to wear them with a grey stripy tee and my Tom’s flats

Also (kinda) red:

Red velvet

Red velvet macaroons… dehydrating away as I type this.

Bella’s smushy face and her new squirrel toy:

Bell 3

We’re still trying to walk her every night (since it’s too hot during the day). The other night, I went to put Livi to bed and asked the Pilot if he’d mind taking Bell on a short walk. After a few grumbles about putting a pink tank top on for the walk and getting a hole punched in his man card, he took her for a walk around the neighborhood 🙂

Reunited:

with breakfast cookie dough cereal (SO good)

Bfast cookie cereal

and the BOSU.

Bosu tilk

Most of my workouts have been very no frills lately- a jumprope, set of weights and stability ball, blast the music and get it done- but I decided to bust out the BOSU the other night- it’s a great way to challenge your core. For the move pictured above, come into a plank position and tilt the BOSU from side to side for 10-12 reps. Rest and repeat 1-2 more times.

Speaking of BOSUs, I feel like it’s time for a big girl cert:

Nasm

I’ve mentioned it before, but I’m not super proud of my personal training certification (even though it is the same one Bob Harper started out with). When people ask me which certification I have, I tend to mumble it, and have been wanting to get something more reputable for a while. I’ve been asked to participate in a few training-related opportunities, so I’d like to get another certification to go with it. I’ll probably be doing NASM (let me know if you have it!), even though I do love AFAA (my group fitness cert is through AFAA), because they have the NASM textbook at work and I can study in between teaching classes.

Your awesome pics:

Thank you so much to those of you who continue to check in with your workouts here on the blog and sending your pics on Facebook and Twitter- I love seeing them. Here are a few from this week:

@sdnil427: Just finished my “Tabata Thursday” workout a day early!

AxicawqCIAEBWbV

@rundreamcook: In the car on my way home after giving ‘s Schweaty July workout a go this morning!

Axd9cqiCMAEX Qi

@juliag__: Just finished  and now it’s time for a breakfast cookie

AxrdDVdCIAArCpN

Not so faves:

The hole in the wall in our garage. For the record, the car “stop” things do not work very well. There was a hole in the garage when we moved in, and now it’s a little more.. defined.

Photo 2

I’m also pretty sure I scratched my eyeball. When I took my contact out last night, my eye immediately started burning, watering and twitching (so weird!) and has been hurting ever since. I’m wearing my glasses today – my left eye has been tearing up all morning.

But hey, it’s Friday!

I’m excited for the Pilot to be home, hang out with the fam and tackle a few projects around the house.

Hope you have a great weekend! <3

See ya later on the Family page.

xoxo

Gina

    So happy Liv liked it!!

Love the red pants! and red velvet Macaroons?!!! Amazing! I have NASM for my CPT and I love it! It’s a really great program!

  4. Leslie W on July 13, 2012 at 1:13 pm

I’m so intrigued! Beet juice and cocoa maybe? Hmmmmmm…. yummy!
Love the baby hummus. The Pilot and my Air Force vet hubby seem quite similar on this topic. 🙂
Enjoy your Fr-eye-day! 🙁 Hope it feels better.

  5. Julie on July 13, 2012 at 1:13 pm

Ahh! Thanks for sharing my pic! That workout was seriously sweaty!

  6. Erin on July 13, 2012 at 1:17 pm

My parents have two giant cars and to make sure you’ve made it all the way in the garage you have to drive until you lightly tap the garage wall. So don’t worry, you’re not the only one =)

  7. Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat on July 13, 2012 at 1:22 pm

Congrats on the new cert undertaking Gina! That’s awesome! I’m also loving bright pants – sporting my purples today!! 🙂 I think it’s awesome that Liv likes hummus. I didn’t start liking it until about 2 years ago and I definitely don’t think I’d have liked it as a baby! (Although maybe if my parents had introduced it to me earlier, I’d think it was awesome. Meh, this is evidence that my head is currently in the clouds on this Friday afternoon and the weekend needs to get here ASAP! 😉

  8. Erin on July 13, 2012 at 1:23 pm

I just got my NASM cert! I will warn you, the test is no joke. I actually had to take it twice. The first time I missed it by 1%! The second time I did much better and I attribute it to purchasing the flash cards. Good luck!

    • Fitnessista on July 13, 2012 at 1:35 pm

good to know! i’ll get the flash cards

      • Shaina on July 13, 2012 at 5:41 pm

I made my own flashcards as I was studying. 🙂 I got my NASM cert in January of 2011 and loved it! The test was definitely challenging, but I passed it on the first try after 2 months of studying (with no prior PT experience). You’ll be fiiiiiine.

        • Jess on July 14, 2012 at 5:25 am

Yeah flash cards are the way to go! Not too hard but lots of obscure questions you have to know by heart. It will be a breeze for you.

  9. Julie on July 13, 2012 at 1:26 pm

I’m so excited for your new certifications. Way to keep up the good work!

  10. Claire on July 13, 2012 at 1:35 pm

Gina, I LOVE your blog! I have been getting more into it lately, and love your workouts, inspiration and fun little things like baby hummus…how cute!

  11. Liz @ Southern Charm on July 13, 2012 at 1:39 pm

Aw Sydney and Bella match! Both get smusshy faces AND have that same toy!! White fluffball unite!!

  12. Lena @Fit on the Rocks on July 13, 2012 at 1:40 pm

Good luck with the new cert! I’m sure you’ll do great. I recently scratched my cornea when removing my contact and had to go get it checked out to make sure it didn’t get infected and what-not. If it’s still red tomorrow, I would make a quick appointment to get it checked out. Usually they’ll just put in some drops to prevent infection and help with discomfort.

  13. Kristen on July 13, 2012 at 1:45 pm

That’s awesome that your getting a new cert! You’ll do great.

Can you PLEASE give us that macaroon recipe?!?! P-L-E-A-S-E!!!!!… as I lay on the floor kicking and screaming like a 2 year old! Haha

  14. Sam on July 13, 2012 at 1:46 pm

Optometry student here with some advice! 🙂 be super careful about touching your eye if you’ve scratched your cornea. You’d be surprised how easy it is to get an infection when you have even a minor scratch- it happened to my friend and she needed antibiotics and 6 months off contacts! Dont rub your eyes and stay away from eye makeup for at least a few days; it’s a breeding ground for bacteria. I’d really recommend seeing a doctor tomorrow if it still hurts!

  15. Averie @ Averie Cooks on July 13, 2012 at 1:49 pm

So cute that Livi is a hummus lover already! I bet just a hint of garlic and she was like whoa..this is so much better than bland rice cereal 🙂

  16. Jess G on July 13, 2012 at 1:52 pm

How did you serve the hummus to Olivia? Did you put it on bread?

    • Fitnessista on July 13, 2012 at 1:56 pm

      nope just on a spoon

  17. Maria on July 13, 2012 at 2:04 pm

I not sure if you know this or not but NASM has military discount for members and their spouses. It’s something I’ve looked into for after baby is born 🙂 http://www.nasm.org/military/

  18. Kathy on July 13, 2012 at 2:05 pm

I am studying the NASM certification right now and plan to taking the test in October. It is really in depth stuff. I am a little worried because I haven’t studied for anything or tested for anything since I got my aerobics certification over 17 years ago. I don’t have the flash cards, but I think I will get them. It is kind of cool, I feel more fit now than I did in my 20’s. I am now 43.

  19. Abby on July 13, 2012 at 2:08 pm

Aw yay for baby hummus! I give my daughter hummus and carrots and she pretty much just uses the carrots as a spoon until the hummus is gone haha

  20. Erin @ The Grass Skirt on July 13, 2012 at 2:15 pm

I’m obsessed with candles too! I try to burn soy ones as much as possible, but my all-time favorite is Kitchen Spice by Yankee candle. It is the best, and I have it burning right now. 🙂

  21. Amber @ Busy, Bold, Blessed on July 13, 2012 at 2:27 pm

Love those red pants! Hope your eye feels better :/

  22. Sam @ Better With Sprinkles on July 13, 2012 at 2:29 pm

I’ve done that with my contacts before too…I think it ended up being an issue with my contact more than something with my eye though! As soon as I switched to a new contact (I use monthly disposables) it was fine.

  23. Laury on July 13, 2012 at 2:45 pm

Hummus is Ella’s absolute favorite food ever!!!!! She almost expect hummus and cucumbers for lunch every day. Mike told me to tone down the garlic in it…but I think she loves garlic the most 😉 I make mine they same way you made it for yourself and you Nana. I cook the beans a little first though. We make roasted red pepper and black beans too and she just goes insane. I have pics of her slathered in it from head to toe.

NASM is a great cert. I started with IFPA and have had ACE for a long while now (I originally got certified when I was19)…but have worked with and hired a lot of NASM trainers and they all had great things to say about it! They seem like they have decent continuing ed also.

I hope your eye feels better. Mike’s done that before and it seemed painful. Eek!

    Have a great weekend, G!

  24. Marissa@ohhhsolovely on July 13, 2012 at 2:48 pm

i have a little 10 lb adorable dog & for the longest i could not figure out why my husband would not walk her. finally, i asked him about it &, yep, it’s all about not feeling manly, blah, blah…it hadn’t even occurred to me. it’s ok though because he helps out in many other ways. i can stick to walking my baby girl!

  25. Sana on July 13, 2012 at 2:56 pm

I am so clueless about what PT certification to get. I am only certified to teach at my former University and we were trained under the AFAA method!

  26. Sara P on July 13, 2012 at 3:05 pm

After trying my best to figure out what route to take for my group certification I have signed up for AFAA in sept because 2 trainers I knew held that certification. Is it considered too easy or out of date?

    • Fitnessista on July 13, 2012 at 3:09 pm

      no afaa is fantastic.

  27. Cassie on July 13, 2012 at 3:09 pm

    Hey Gina,

I’ve done that to my eye with my contact before…if your eyes are too dry when you take them out, it can sort of suction to your eye and can tear your cornea when you take it out 🙁 For me, I just had to wear contacts for several days until it felt better and used rewetting drops to keep it from being dry and then put in new contacts when I started wearing them again. Hope yours feels better soon 🙁

I’ve been meaning to ask about your personal training cert for awhile! I want to get mine soon, but I was focused on getting Body Pump certified. Now that it’s done, I hope to get certified as a PT soon, so let me know what you do and how it goes!

    • Fitnessista on July 13, 2012 at 3:15 pm

that’s probably what happened because my eyes were SUPER dry when i finally took my contacts out (i took a 30 min nap with them in). i have an eye doc appt this afternoon 🙁

      • Sara on July 13, 2012 at 11:44 pm

Helloooo lasik! DO IT. You will not regret it. Contacts are the most annoying thing in the world, and it’s a modern life where technology has found a way to fix genetically dodgy eyes.

        • Fitnessista on July 14, 2012 at 1:08 pm

i’m so scared of the eye claw

  28. Annette @ FitnessPerks on July 13, 2012 at 3:11 pm

haha i have those exact pair of toms, i found them at a thrift store $20, LOVE crossroads trading co!

    • Fitnessista on July 13, 2012 at 3:22 pm

no way! love when that happens

  30. Carly on July 13, 2012 at 3:25 pm

I have NASM, its hard but awesome! Don’t do AFAA! It is the one to have for group ex, but it is not valued for PT. If not NASM, then NSCA or ACSM are the ones to do. ACE if you have to!

    • Fitnessista on July 13, 2012 at 3:28 pm

that’s what i was thinking, too. i was looking at acsm and nasm, but think i’m going to go with nasm

      • Carly on July 14, 2012 at 3:58 pm

Good choice! You will learn a lot. It is a great cert because it really works with progression and is very valuable knowledge for ALL clients that you could potentially work with! Plus, they have some more advanced certs too that you can branch out to!!!

  31. Alexandra on July 13, 2012 at 3:27 pm

Mmmm dehydrated red velvet macarons? Yummm!

  32. Michelle@Peachy Palate on July 13, 2012 at 3:41 pm

  33. Liz on July 13, 2012 at 3:43 pm

I got mine through NASM and thought it was fantastic. I am also studying for their Fitness Nutrition Specialist course too…so far so good! Good luck! Happy Friday to Gina, the Pilot, Olivia, and Bella!

Love the red pants! Haven’t joined that party yet but paired with the grey and white shirt looks great! May have to look into these 🙂

  35. Lisa on July 13, 2012 at 3:49 pm

I love the red pants! Bright pants are so cute these days. I think that is great you want to get a better certificate. I want to do NASM I’m pretty sure, after all the reading I’ve done on the programs this seems the best! That is awesome Liv loves hummus, I don’t even like it too much so she’s got me beat 😉

  36. Stefanie @TheNewHealthy on July 13, 2012 at 3:58 pm

Red velvet macaroons sound so good. I love red velvet anything – so I can imagine that I’d be all over those!

  37. Ali on July 13, 2012 at 4:58 pm

First off, red velvet macaroons???? Oh my lanta those look delightful! Second, I totally know what you mean about certifications. I do a ton of nutritional coaching, but don’t have an “official” one yet. I’m working on that as we speak. I, like you on your blog, just give out recommendations for how to eat clean, etc. As for training, I have my NASM personal trainer cert and I love it. It’s recognized by everyone and seems to be the preference when people are looking to higher trainers! You’ll do great, I actually enjoyed the book–ish 🙂

  38. Jenn on July 13, 2012 at 5:10 pm

OHHH my god. Red velvet is beyond my favorite flavor. as soon as i saw that picture i knew without reading the caption. GOTTA HAVE EM…have a giveaway and…pick me to win 😀

I love bosu ball workouts! Makes your core burrrn!! 🙂

We have the same candle, I love it. Got it at our Kroger when it was a close-out item and wasn’t a bad deal for $1.89!

  41. Ashley on July 13, 2012 at 6:32 pm

I’m not sure if I have commented before – but have been an avid reader for awhile. But I got to say great post and I love your blog – entertaining with so much useful information. 🙂 🙂

  42. SaraRM on July 13, 2012 at 6:44 pm

I went through NASM as well and thought it was great. I read each chapter, watched the videos then took the practice exams. The practice exams really really were helpful. I tried to know how to answer the question with each answer choice so i wasnt just memorizing the question. Its a great cert but one you definitely need to put the time into.

  43. Jen on July 13, 2012 at 7:41 pm

I have the NASM cert and it’s definitely well-respected and recognized & gave me a pay boost at the gym where I used to work. I’m sure you’ll have no problem passing it 🙂

  44. Kelly @ My Love Affair with Running on July 13, 2012 at 8:29 pm

It is so smart to be introducing Liv to your style of food early on.. Yum who wouldn’t like humous???

Cookie dough cereal sounds so good!

  45. Dynamics on July 13, 2012 at 9:32 pm

LOL, that looks like a little “snarl”. She is soooooo cute. You need to get one of those concrete blocks, guaranteed to stop you before hitting the wall. Did I miss the macaroon recipe? AT&T has not been nice to me and I have missed so much.

  46. Katie @ Talk Less, Say More on July 13, 2012 at 9:52 pm

I’m looking into getting my Cert too! I haven’t decided which program yet and I’m still saving up the money…lol

  47. Roselyn @ A Balanced Fit on July 13, 2012 at 11:05 pm

I have a friend studying for NASM right now…and she’s been studying since January! Test is in August. Very intense…no joke! Congrats on the decision to propel yourself further into the fitness profession! I also have my group fitness cert thru AFAA. 🙂

  48. Ryan on July 13, 2012 at 11:26 pm

Losing his man card… Love it! I am getting ready to sign up for NASM, too!

    • Fitnessista on July 14, 2012 at 1:09 pm

it was funny to me because he always walks bell with liv in the ergo all the time, but when it’s just bell, it hurts his man card somehow haha

  49. Sara on July 13, 2012 at 11:35 pm

That’s one of the certs I have. Before doing it, I emailed a bunch of big name trainers and asked them which one they recommended. The most popular was the CSCS but you needed to be a graduate and I was not at the time. Second was the NASM-CPT and that’s what I did. I thought it was great, although you really needed to get the practical experience yourself (can do the whole thing online and never actually see a gym). You don’t have that problem, clearly.

Unfortunately the CPT is not recognised in NZ (you can’t get insurance or register with REPS) so I have to do yet another cert. I did one in England with Premier, so I could register there, the CPT because I thought I could use it in NZ, but couldn’t, and now I have to do another one….. or maybe I’ll just stick with being a nutritionist after all.

  50. Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin on July 14, 2012 at 7:44 am

That’s so cute about Liv loving hummus – she’s taking after you already! 😉

Also congrats on going for your NASM!
