Just a Bowl of Cherries
Hey guys! Your amazing comments yesterday were more than I could ever wish for. I hope you know how much I appreciate all of your kind words <3
The whole situation kept reminding me of one of my favorites Broadway musical songs (I’m a huge musical nerd)- it was stuck in my head all day.
For those of you who can’t watch/don’t feel like watching the video (the Fosse soundtrack recording is better, anyhoo), here are the lyrics:
Life is just a bowl of cherries
Don’t take it serious,
Life’s too mysterious
You work,
You save,
You worry so
But you can’t take your dough
When you go, go, goSo keep repeating "It’s the berries."
The strongest oak must fall
The sweet things in life
To you were just loaned
So how can you lose
What you’ve never ownedLife is just a bowl of cherries
So live and laugh
Laugh and love
Live and laugh,
Laugh and love,
Live and laugh at it all!
And one of yesterday’s snacks was very appropriate:
I’m officially obsessed with frozen organic cherries. They taste glorious, especially since my throat is killing me (thank you, allergies).
Some of yesterday’s eats included:
Millet bread with Polaner and one with Earth Balance, cinnamon and mesquite
Apple with cinnamon and mesquite:
Deconstructed sushi (“raw” rice made of cauliflower, rice vinegar, sea salt, garlic and pepper, topped with carrots, bell pepper and green onion)
I stirred in some of this wasabi powder:
And packed it up to take to the gym with some untoasted nori sheets (that I tore apart and put into a baggie for greens and crunch), and mint leaves (yes, I carry mint leaves in baggies around instead of gum sometimes. Super weird, I know, but no aspartame, blue coloring or gelatin there).
I munched that glorious snack in between training appointments, and it was stanky. Mayjah apologies to everyone I work with. Raw cauliflower, no matter how you “dress” it, has quite an unpleasant aroma. Ron said my lunch smelled like his garbage disposal 😉 For the record, it tasted like heaven.
Workout wise, I did a 60 minute yoga podcast from YogaDownload.com and 30 breezy minutes on the elliptical with a People magazine.
While I trained my face off (7 appointments in one day is not for the faint of heart), the pilot’s dinner was doing its thang in the slow cooker.
My friend Jeni (who is an angel, btw) made meatballs Monday and gave me some to make for the pilot’s dinner on Tuesday. I just put them along with some organic marinara in the slow cooker, and cooked on low for 6 hours. All he had to do when he got home was boil whole wheat tortellini and top it with said meatballs and sauce glory. He was a happy kid 😀
My dinner was a goat cheese, roasted beet and shallot beast:
Also, an unpictured small bowl of oatbran because I really wanted something carby 🙂
I was pretty stoked to get this lovely DVD in the mail yesterday:
The new Shiva Rea!
I ordered it because my favorite yoga teacher EVER (Laura at the Yoga Room… OKC bloggies, please take a class for me!) studied with Shiva Rea and my twinnie friends are also fans of her.
I’ll be trying it out for tomorrow’s yoga sesh and will definitely let you know what I think 😀
Have a wonderful day <3
xoxo,
Gina
Am I the first the comment!?
The cauliflower rice looks amazing. I’m imagining that eating the cauliflower raw is less “effective” on the digestive system? cooked Cauli somehow reacts to me 🙂
What is your favorite raw goat’s milk cheese brand? I’m considering implementing a little into life! You always make it look so delicious. Have a great day!
hey sarah,
i think raw cauliflower is much easier to digest. i can eat 1/2 – 1 whole head of one raw, while i just have a little if it’s cooked
my favorite brand is alta dena- they sell it at whole foods
I definitely ate a whole bag of organic frozen cherries the other night while doing homework…such a yummy snack!! I always relate Broadway songs to my life too. Everytime it’s nice out I want to sing “O What A Beautiful Morning!” Have a great hump day 🙂
I can’t wait to read your review of that dvd because it is avaliable on netflix and I was thinking of ordering it. Can’t wait to see what the next big thing for you will be ! And I wish I could eat raw cauliflower it does NOT like me at all! 🙂
I just bought that dvd! Its great… I like how there are 20 minutue routines, I usaully do that after a tough run
good to know, i can’t wait to try it!
Ok, I cannot get over the fact that you carry mint leaves around with you. 🙂 I guess you gotta do what ya gotta do.
Glad you’re feeling better Gina! 🙂
I’m also obsessed with frozen cherries! Those and frozen mangoes and grapes are ma favorites 😉
Q: Have you ever made meatless meatball before??? I bet they’d be just as delish!!
And kudos for the mint leaf “gum”! LOL, where do you think of this stuff???
Have a great day!!! <3
xoxoxox,
Lauren
I am loving frozen cherries too, especially in my shakes! Are you still making raw lunches for your clients?
no because one of the clients was an owner for the cafe. she asked me if i would, but it feels awkward now
That DVD looks like fun! I like “mix and match” workout tapes like that!
HUGS coming your way 🙂
Is there a special proportion for the cauliflower “rice” or just til it tastes right? I have most of the ingredients at home i think, and would LOVE to try making raw sushi!
just til it tastes right— i usually add in a little sesame oil too, but i’m out 🙂
I would love a post about pre pregnancy nutrition! YAY!
Life is a bowl of cherries! So sweety but tangy. 🙂 Love cheeries!
I’m sure it will take some time for the discomfort to pass with the cafe. I know it’s a hard situation to navigate. Snuggle closer to the pilot and life will feel better.
I can’t wait to hear your opinion of that DVD! I’ve been in the market for a good standard yoga DVD and this one sounds great!
you’re just full of amazing ideas (the mint leaves instead of gum)…you rock lady, you’re pretty inventive!!!!
whoa ive never heard of or seen wasabi powder!! must get my hands on some 🙂 and its funny i never would have thought of using mint leaves instead of gum but it’s brilliant!
Yum yum yum, love cherries. It’s pretty much the only thing I can replace my Weight Watchers ice cream bars with for dessert and still feel totally satisfied!

Perfect song with a great message. Thanks for posting that.
That’s so awesome you chew mint leaves! haha 🙂
Looking forward to your review of the yoga DVD!
I just read your post from yesterday and I’m so sorry 🙁
But you’re young and there will be plenty of great opportunities in the future 🙂
I just polished off a bag of organic frozen cherries. So good!
your deconstructed sushi looks so pretty and tasty. albeit smelly.
I got that DVD for Christmas, it’s fantastic! I like the preset workouts that pairs 20 min workouts together. The one called “Fire” is killer, just a warning, lots of push-ups!
I made cauliflower in a slow cooker stew one time and I thought the whole apartment building was going to kill me, it smelled so bad! That is one stinky veggie!
deconstructed sushi looks yummy! as do the cherries. can’t wait until i can get my hands on some
I’m so sorry to hear the bad news 🙁 But I’m sure there’s good news just around the corner (even if you have to look hard for it)! I can’t wait to hear your review about the Yoga DVD. I’m looking for a new one!
I am a frozen cherry addict as well!
You’re too funny with the mint leaves. I’d be afraid I’d get the leaves stuck in my teeth like lettuce or something. 🙂
I’m always looking for new ways to try cauliflower, never had it as a rice. My most recent fav is to roast it. So good!
those cherries look amazing! honestly, your lunch kinda scared me (hehe!) but i bet it was amazing!
I used to have a Shiva Rea DVD. She’s terrific but her extreme flexibility intimidated me, so I sold it. You’ll love it, I bet.
Great idea with the leaves! We chug grass, why not chew leaves? 😉 I didn’t get to comment yesterday but I am SO proud of you and your positive attitude. I’m sure you don’t feel like being positive, but you will get there. Thanks for the lyrics. We just have to live with living in mind, not with stopping life at every disappointment! I know something amazing is coming along soon. 🙂
I know this wasn’t the point of posting that song, but I LOVE RUTHIE HENSHALL! Come to think of it, you actually look a lot like her. She has a paler complexion, but you both have the same long, shiny hair, signature nose (compliment, believe me), and super toned body. If you like her, I SERIOUSLY recommend that you track down a DVD copy of “Putting it Together.” It’s a Sondheim review, with Henshall, Carol Burnett, George Hearn, John Barrowman, and Bronson Pinchot.
Okay, ramble over.
I also love frozen cherries! Frozen grapes and bananas will do the trick, too.
Hi gina,
Bigg huggs coming your way! Look at it this way, 1 or 2 years down the lane, this will not matter to you at all…life always gets better!…u are surrounded by great people in your life…live it up! 🙂 Connect/chat up with your family at this time…it will put everything in perspective. 🙂
Loved the lyrics…gonna stick it on my refridgerator.
Back in India a lot of people chew mint as a breath freshener…it also aids in digestion. Same with ‘Jeera’ (u will find this in the indian food that u love so much)…jeera too has the same benefits.
My mom makes this awesome scrambled eggs adding cauliflower to the eggs. Will send u the recipe once i get it from her.
I second Nelly’s request- a post on pre pregnancy nutrition.
Take care dear.
That reminds me of a snack that I like and haven’t had in awhile: frozen grapes. 🙂
The salad looks delicious. How long did your roast the beet? Do you have any tricks for removing the red stain on hands left by beets?
I’m so sorry to hear about the cafe, but you’re right–bigger and better things are headed your way! And that song is so great/so true!
Hey! 🙂 i am going to try that yoga podcast you are talking about, I have been looking for a good one! 🙂 also, when you say you put ‘mesquite’ on things, what do you mean?? is it a spice?? what does it taste like?
oh, bummers, I guess i thought the yoga podcast was free?? 🙁 do you know of any good free ones??
Now I’m super hungry for sushi…love the idea of deconstructinmg it!
Shout out to OKC bloggies! Whoop, whoop. OK, sorry for the nerd moment haha. I’ll definitely need to peep out her class. Hope you feel better soon!!!
WHERE do you find your cherries!? Kristen says she gets them at Whole Foods and up here in Canuckistan I can’t seem to find them for the life of me! Everytime you or Kristen blog about that cherry chocolate bomb shake I look all pathetic and sad because I can’t make one!
Yum! Your raw recipes look delish. Do you post everything you eat on your blog? Some days I’m amazed by how much you work out and out little you eat. 🙂
nope, i haven’t posted all of my eats for the last year or so. it seemed a little ocd to me 🙂
I now need to try frozen cherries 😉
I like your unconstructed sushi idea. Looks delish. I don’t think I’ve ever seen powdered wasabi… yum, dangerous!
Can’t wait to hear about the DVD, I was considering buying it but I don’t have anything of her’s yet.
You are SO RIGHT! Life is a bowl of cherries, it’s all about how we look at it! Thanks for the reminder! Also, why do I forget how versatile nori is? I’m glad I caught your eats because I think it’s time I bust out some seaweed and make a wrap!
loooooove that bway jam! in sort of bway-ish news, have you heard that glee is going on tour? i think tix go on sale next week! hooooooray!
whaaaaaat?! off to find out more details 🙂
Have you heard the Lisa Loeb version of Life Is Just a Bowl of Cherries? It’s great.
no i haven’t! must download now
Next time I’m shopping, I’m going to buy some mint leaves- such a good idea!:)
mmm, all looks good.
I keep leaving you comments on all these backlog posts and then forgetting which ones I commented on so I can go back and look for answers! I’m bookmarking this one though so I’ll remember to come back and check…
How do you make that cauliflower rice a rice? I think I’ve told you I’m gluten free, but most grains besides oats really hurt my stomach so I pretty much do oats and then other grains only very rarely. I use spaghetti squash for pasta but just have to either not feel good or go without rice. I’d love to make a cauliflower rice!
just pulse it in the food processor with olive oil, salt and pepper 🙂
