A different kind of cooking

While I made the chickpea patties last night, I also ventured into a new-to-me kinda cooking.

Baby food

Baby food!

How cute are these little baby bullet containers?!

Baby food2

(Peas, carrots and green beans)

We’ve been experimenting with babyled weaning so far – the baby is given large pieces of the same food you’re eating. The only obstacles we’ve encountered are the facts that Oliv hasn’t developed her pincer grasp (so peas would be a little rough) and I like to salt our veggies pretty heftily, and salt is out for beebs.

I thought I’d help her out by steaming and pureeing some plain veggies that she can mash around and grab handfuls of:

Peas

and the Pilot and I helped her scoop up and eat bites during the meal.

I wasn’t sure how much she’d like it- I don’t even like peas plain- but she went crazy for them. After dinner, it was legendary bath time and bed for Liv, and then I hit up the gym to do the week 1 circuit. Thank you so much to those of you who have been checking in with the workouts! I love the pics on Twitter, too. I left the gym sweaty and triumphant.

Kind of random: Bell got a haircut yesterday. I dropped her off at the groomer’s and the Pilot went to pick her up when he got off work.

This is the picture he texted me, along with this caption: IT’S THE BEAL!!!!!

NewImage

(We call Bella “Beal” along with about a hundred other strange nicknames)

I laughed so hard. I really thought the groomer decided to do something new, but it turns out that the Pilot snapped that shot in a dog magazine while waiting for Bell to be finished with her haircut.

Much better:

Bells haircut

She looks so pretty 🙂

This morning was the standard egg burrito with watery coffee:

Bfast

I try to make iced coffee every morning and the ice just ends up melting. Halp me.

Time to pack up my work snacks and g-o. It’s a Zumba day!

Have a happy humpday!

xoxo

Try to go for at least 30 minutes. Also, what’s on the menu today? If you’re participating in the Shape Up, be sure to drink at least 8 glasses of water and get in 5 servings total of fruits and veggies!

Shout outs: Athena, Ana, Ann, Jayme, Mandy M, Katie H, Amy, Sarah B., Kate, Shelley, Jamie, Lisa, Mel, Madison, Stacy, Abby F, Siobhan, Rachel C and Emma! <– just a handful of the fabulous ladies who rocked out their workouts and checked in yesterday!

Today’s workout jam:

Awesome for sprints (or today’s steady state!). I totally thought it said “it started with the whiskey” instead of “with a whisper” until I searched for the video right now. And the meaning of the song just changed.

I did my steady state yesterday– 7miles to and from my favorite coffee place (yes I bribe myself with coffee). I had to re-work the calendar around my schedule so today is rest day and tomorrow is Workout 1!

  2. Jennifer T. on June 13, 2012 at 1:17 pm

I did 30 minutes on the elliptical for my steady cardio today!

  3. Sara S, on June 13, 2012 at 1:21 pm

I tried out Zumba recently because of reading about it here. Even though i was frustrated almost to tears the frist class, halfway through I realized I was smiling and I stuck with it. I’ve gone back every week and now I LOVE it! Thanks for the exposure, i never would have tried it otherwise.

  4. Hillary on June 13, 2012 at 1:22 pm

I had a sweet workout this morning: 25 min on the stair climber, 30 on the elliptical. Steady state, but still sweaty!

  5. allison on June 13, 2012 at 1:25 pm

make some ice cubes out of coffee! then when they melt your coffee wont be watery 🙂

    • Jill on June 13, 2012 at 1:29 pm

Saw this idea on Pinterest! Freeze some coffee for ice cubes that won’t make it watery!

      • vicky on June 13, 2012 at 4:38 pm

this is what i do– works like a charm! i have been doing this for protein smoothies, too– delicious.

I agree, those containers for baby food look way to cute!! You have to post a photo of Olivia covered in green peas puree LOL

  7. anna on June 13, 2012 at 1:28 pm

Iced coffee: if you have ice trays, pour coffee in them and freeze. Next time you want iced coffee use those cubes instead of regular ice cubes and it won’t be watery 🙂

Better late than never. Had to do yesterday’s workout today and I loved it! Thanks for providing these workouts! It is so easy to get stuck in a rut or not workout at all in the summer. I am glad I got my workout in today!

  9. Kristina on June 13, 2012 at 1:30 pm

I always use cold coffee and then add creamer and ice…it works like a charm! But, you do have to be patient for it to cool or use leftovers. 🙂

  10. Melissa on June 13, 2012 at 1:33 pm

I do a “cold brew” method for iced coffee. I combine about 1/4c of grounds with about 1c of water (adjust for how strong you like your coffee…and how much you want to make in advance) and refrigerate overnight. Then in the morning, strain through a coffee filter. I like to add ice, milk or almond milk and a shot of sugar free syrup…but the cold brewing makes it mellow enough to drink black. I also saw on pinterest the idea to freeze coffee in ice cube trays so that you can use the coffee cubes in your iced coffee instead of regular ice cubes = no watery iced coffee.

LOVE LOVE LOVE that sing. I am also terrible at understanding lyrics, I had to google these because I couldnt understand that he was saying ‘chit chat’
I think Baby Led Weaning in theory is good, but I think it is way too messy and I dont have the patience for it. I spoon fed all three of my kids until they were old enough to use the pincer grasp, and they all turned out fine 🙂
Every time you show a pic of your kitchen, I am so jealous! It looks so bright and modern! Mine is crappy 🙁

coffee ice cubes! you’ll never go back!!

  13. Melanie on June 13, 2012 at 1:49 pm

I did an hour spinning class today. Super sore from yesterday, but it felt good nonetheless!

  14. Kat on June 13, 2012 at 1:56 pm

I made all of P’s baby food at this stage – I found it to be so much easier than buying baby food! And she loved exploring all the flavors. I love the bullet containers, but because I’m kinda cheap I ended up just storing mine in ice cube trays then transferring to zip lock bags. It actually worked pretty well!

  15. Ezzie on June 13, 2012 at 1:57 pm

The baby food containers are so adorable! As for the iced coffee, the pioneer woman’s got ya covered. Ever since I started making iced coffee this way, I’ve been a much happier girl in the mornings! (:

    It really is perfect!

I taught Zumba this morning and did CrossFit! Now collapsed on my couch at the moment 🙂 Love the fake picture of Bella. There’s a dog on my street that actually has a little afro/poof going on around her head! So cute!

  17. stephanie on June 13, 2012 at 2:03 pm

Brew your coffee the night before and store it in the fridge overnight. No need for ice, you can add your extras and sip away (I have no problem getting my stevia to dissolve in the cold coffee, but if you want to add a sweetener you may want to consider adding before you cool the coffee).

  18. lisa on June 13, 2012 at 2:06 pm

I am sore this morning but it actually feels great and I still ran 5k for today’s steady cardio. For iced coffee, you need to brew the night before, either in your coffee maker and cool in fridge, or try the cool brew method in a French press. Perfect every time!

  19. Amelia on June 13, 2012 at 2:07 pm

I knocked out an hour of body attack and lifting this morning. Wahoo!

  20. Lauren on June 13, 2012 at 2:13 pm

    Love the baby bullet!
For iced coffee, I just use the individual instant coffee packets. Add three packets to a cup and half of hot water (add your sweetener while its hot so it dissolves) and stick in the fridge overnight. In the morning, pour over ice and add milk if you use it. If you don’t use milk and don’t want the coffee as strong, use two packets of instant coffee instead of three. Hope this helps. It took me awhile to get it perfect…I did a how to blog post on this awhile back.

I did one hour of kickboxing yesterday 🙂 More to come today 🙂

I rocked some steady state this morning with Spinning!

  23. liz y. on June 13, 2012 at 2:16 pm

If I am in the mood for iced coffee, i make my coffee EXTRA strong. Then I appreciate when the ice melts and waters it down.

I did HIIT yesterday, and followed up in the evening with my circuit training class. (I’m gonna be doing your summer shape up workouts on the weekends, when I don’t have circuit classes.)

Today I did my steady state… Turbo Fire Fire 45EZ DVD. This one is not easy, but I powered through it this morning!

  25. Rebekah on June 13, 2012 at 2:25 pm

I’m switching today and tomorrow’s exercises. I am moving this weekend, so I need to finish packing today on my day off…I’m counting that as movement, plus I know I’ll need a nice, long stretch tonight, so that’ll be my active rest! Breakfast cookie first thing this morning and an apple and peanut butter for morning snack. So far, so good! 🙂

  26. lauren on June 13, 2012 at 2:26 pm

I make coffee ice cubes with leftover coffee. Doesn’t take up much room and is a quick fix.

  27. Abbey on June 13, 2012 at 2:27 pm

Make ice cubes with leftover coffee. Once they are frozen, put them in a plastic freezer bag so they don’t take up your ice cube trays!

  28. Conni on June 13, 2012 at 2:28 pm

Like the others said, make your ice cubes out of coffee and cold brew the coffee you want to use. This is how I do it: you’ll need to large containers. Set one container aside and put a pound of strong ground coffee in the other. Add two gallons of cold water to the coffee grounds, stir to combine, and then cover and let steep on the counter for at least 8 hours. When the time is up, take the second (empty) container and place a mesh strainer over the top. Cover the strainer with some cheese cloth then SLOWLY pour the steeped coffee through the strainer (this will take some time because it will drain kind of slowly). After you make the last pour, use the back of a spoon to push the final coffee amounts through the grounds and boom!!! Just refrigerate until you’re ready to drink it. P.s. if you do it this way, you don’t have to use coffee ice cubes. GOOD LUCK! 🙂

i ran for 40 minutes today, it was hard since i juste started doing some workout again a few days ago (I had stopped it 6 months ago and i should never have done this!!!) but i hope to be soon back in shape! And I’m gonna try one new salad recipe (inspired by one of yours) this weekend! xxx

  30. Angela on June 13, 2012 at 2:53 pm

I have an iced tea brewer that also brews iced coffee, I love it and it makes it super easy to make! I think I got it at Target.

  31. Lauren @ Sassy Molassy on June 13, 2012 at 2:56 pm

Sometimes I will take a cup of coffee and put it in the fridge for a bit before taking it back out and adding ice. Got my run on this morning in a nice little misty rain. Although getting up at 515am is a bit painful, getting a 7 mile run in before work feels great.

  32. Melodie on June 13, 2012 at 3:00 pm

i made my boys baby food. 🙂 and will definitely do so with future babes as well. it was so worth it to me, the little extra bit of time involved.
so i’m a little off on my days and i just finished circuit one. dripping sweat as i type this now. 😉 it was hard to get motivated to use my boys naptime to workout/then shower/get ready. but now i’m so glad i did! now off to shower.

    • Fitnessista on June 13, 2012 at 3:26 pm

amazing! nap time workouts are always tough to get in, but when you do, so worth it 🙂

4 mile run done!! Looking forward to some yoga tomorrow. My legs are FEELIN’ IT!!!

  34. Katie H on June 13, 2012 at 3:07 pm

Iced coffee at home has been major fail for me as well! 40 minutes of steady state cardio on the spin bike done!

  35. Talia @ Bite Size Wellness on June 13, 2012 at 3:37 pm

I try to put extra ice into my coffee to rid my self of the watered down drink, but ultimately it all melts. It doesn’t bother me too much anymore, but in my past I have made a batch and kept it in the freezer for a short time before drinking it. Maybe try that if you can be patient!
Plan to take the pup out!

  36. Lena on June 13, 2012 at 3:44 pm

I have a solution for your watered down ice coffee! If you used the same coffee most mornings, make a batch of coffee (about 2-3 cups), fill an ice cube tray (or two) and make ice cubes out of the coffee! Then when you have your iced coffees in the morning, throw some coffee cubes in there to make it cold AND not water it down! 🙂

  37. Nina on June 13, 2012 at 3:54 pm

    Coffee ice cubes 🙂

  38. Catherine Crain on June 13, 2012 at 3:57 pm

Make ice cubes out of almond milk 🙂 they’ll melt of course but won’t water your coffee down! 🙂 Or you could make coffee cubes too!

  39. Nora on June 13, 2012 at 4:08 pm

Did Workout 1 yesterday.. definitely feeling it, especially in my quads from the squats! Heading to the gym tonight for spin which will be my cardio 🙂 loving this summer shape up!

  40. Alice on June 13, 2012 at 4:16 pm

My biscuits are still burning/burnt from the week one workout!! But I did push through and did 30 mins elliptical today! Love having a workout plan set out for meeeeee, just need to work on my nutrition still :s

  41. Jess on June 13, 2012 at 4:22 pm

This is exactly how we did baby led weaning! When she gets bigger you can play around with adding different herbs and spices to jazz things up. I used to add mint to peas and my girls went crazy for it. They still love peas and will pick them out to eat first.

Went for a 5 km run last night, ended up doing intervals… Can’t break the habit! 🙂

  42. Gretchen on June 13, 2012 at 4:27 pm

My fiancé has made me iced lattes by pouring the espresso & milk in a cocktail shaker, then draining it over more ice once it’s cooled off some in the shaker. Of course, in that case I’m sure the milk/half&half helps cool it down, too, but maybe the same technique would work with straightup coffee.

  43. Kelly J on June 13, 2012 at 4:28 pm

I don’t know if this has already been suggested but try making ice cubes out of coffee to prevent watered down coffee. Also, I have made coffee the night before and then stuck it in the fridge for quick iced coffee in the am.

  44. Lea on June 13, 2012 at 4:29 pm

I always thought the Baby Bullet was a really poorly named product. I feel like their marketing department should have caught that one.

For the iced coffee dilemma, a few people said make coffee ice cubes, but you can also make milk/creamer ice cubes if you don’t drink your iced coffee black.

  45. Blake @ Blake Bakes on June 13, 2012 at 4:29 pm

Cold brew your coffee overnight. 1 cup of coffee in a quart container, fill the rest with filtered water. Sit in the fridge for at least 12 hours. Strain in the morning and then you have iced coffee concentrate!

  46. Alexandra on June 13, 2012 at 4:33 pm

Got in a 40 minute run this morning before work! Nothing like a nice schweaty run to get the day going on the right foot 🙂 Im 3 for 3 days woohoo!

  47. Lisa on June 13, 2012 at 4:33 pm

Made the sushi salad with tuna today for lunch, what a great idea! I didn’t think I would love it as much as I did, next time I am using crab.
