A different kind of cooking

While I made the chickpea patties last night, I also ventured into a new-to-me kinda cooking.

Baby food

Baby food!

How cute are these little baby bullet containers?!

Baby food2

(Peas, carrots and green beans)

We’ve been experimenting with babyled weaning so far – the baby is given large pieces of the same food you’re eating. The only obstacles we’ve encountered are the facts that Oliv hasn’t developed her pincer grasp (so peas would be a little rough) and I like to salt our veggies pretty heftily, and salt is out for beebs.

I thought I’d help her out by steaming and pureeing some plain veggies that she can mash around and grab handfuls of:

Peas

and the Pilot and I helped her scoop up and eat bites during the meal.

I wasn’t sure how much she’d like it- I don’t even like peas plain- but she went crazy for them. After dinner, it was legendary bath time and bed for Liv, and then I hit up the gym to do the week 1 circuit. Thank you so much to those of you who have been checking in with the workouts! I love the pics on Twitter, too. I left the gym sweaty and triumphant.

Kind of random: Bell got a haircut yesterday. I dropped her off at the groomer’s and the Pilot went to pick her up when he got off work.

This is the picture he texted me, along with this caption: IT’S THE BEAL!!!!!

NewImage

(We call Bella “Beal” along with about a hundred other strange nicknames)

I laughed so hard. I really thought the groomer decided to do something new, but it turns out that the Pilot snapped that shot in a dog magazine while waiting for Bell to be finished with her haircut.

Much better:

Bells haircut

She looks so pretty 🙂

This morning was the standard egg burrito with watery coffee:

Bfast

I try to make iced coffee every morning and the ice just ends up melting. Halp me.

Time to pack up my work snacks and g-o. It’s a Zumba day!

Have a happy humpday!

Leave a comment to let me know that you’ve done your steady state cardio for the day! It can be anything: running, walking, spinning, elliptical, rowing, Zumba- you name it. Try to go for at least 30 minutes. Also, what’s on the menu today? If you’re participating in the Shape Up, be sure to drink at least 8 glasses of water and get in 5 servings total of fruits and veggies!

Shout outs: Athena, Ana, Ann, Jayme, Mandy M, Katie H, Amy, Sarah B., Kate, Shelley, Jamie, Lisa, Mel, Madison, Stacy, Abby F, Siobhan, Rachel C and Emma! <– just a handful of the fabulous ladies who rocked out their workouts and checked in yesterday!

Today’s workout jam:

Awesome for sprints (or today’s steady state!). I totally thought it said “it started with the whiskey” instead of “with a whisper” until I searched for the video right now. And the meaning of the song just changed.

Got my steady state cardio in today 🙂 Now on to a healthy snack and toning!

  2. sarah b. on June 13, 2012 at 4:49 pm

Just did my run for my cardio for the day. My abs are still sore from yesterday – glad to know I still have them somewhere! Love the baby bullet – my girls loved spinach/potato combo.

  3. Laura on June 13, 2012 at 5:00 pm

coffee ice cubes are the best and use up any leftover coffee! also make a batch of coffee at night and stick in the fridge for the night!

  4. Sarah on June 13, 2012 at 5:12 pm

I either make the coffe the night before and keep it in the fridge or use the Starbucks VIA Iced Coffee packets. Good luck!

  5. Dana on June 13, 2012 at 5:21 pm

I have started a couple days late because I’m getting over a cold and I had a tennis class last night (and our instructor makes us hustle!) but I decided to jump in today and I did my steady state cardio. Lots of walking with a half hour carrying a bag of groceries home! I’m looking forward to yoga tomorrow.

Here’s how I make awesome iced coffee at home! I use a press called the aerobie aeropress and you can use any kind of coffee and any kind of grind. Essentially i make iced americanos. Yum!

  6. Ali on June 13, 2012 at 5:31 pm

You have to chill your coffee first then add the ice! Brew it at night, add your sweeteners and whatever else you like in it. Let it chill over night, add ice in the am. <3

  7. Jane on June 13, 2012 at 5:32 pm

I am going to a class today, which is a lot of cardio. Also, I bought a glass water bottle from Whole Foods that I am kind of obsessed with to try and motivate myself to drink more water!

  8. Sarah @ So You Like Mermaids on June 13, 2012 at 5:40 pm

Woooo I just did workout 1…sweaty and triumphant is a very good way to describe it! It kicked my butt…but I’m going to go back and kick its butt next time!
I even ran on the treadmill for the HIIT bit – the treadmill and I aren’t usually friends but by the time I hit 20 minutes I was thinking aw, is it over already?!

Thanks for providing such an AWESOME resource for free – you are amazing!

  9. Leslie Wingate on June 13, 2012 at 5:42 pm

Where did you get your tank??? SO CUTE!

    • Laura on June 13, 2012 at 7:56 pm

      Leslie, I have the same tank – it’s J.Crew.

    • Fitnessista on June 13, 2012 at 8:22 pm

J crew, it’s from last year though

  10. Soniathe Mexigarian on June 13, 2012 at 5:48 pm

Did one hour of yoga and am going to the gym to run for 3 miles, which would be just over 30 minutes for me 🙂

  11. Edie Reed on June 13, 2012 at 5:51 pm

Just did workout 1 and it rocked!! Ooof my muscles hurt, but in a really good way. =)

  12. Tara C. on June 13, 2012 at 5:58 pm

I use a coffee press at night. Put coffee in, water, put the lid on and put it in the fridge. Then in the morning, you push the lid down and pour! Add your favorite milk/sweetener, good to go! SO GOOD!

  13. Lindsay M. on June 13, 2012 at 6:07 pm

This woman has the BEST recipe for iced coffee 🙂
    http://thepioneerwoman.com/cooking/2011/06/perfect-iced-coffee/

    • Lisa on June 13, 2012 at 11:03 pm

You beat me to it! I follow the pioneer woman way too!! Comes out nice and strong 🙂

      • Grace (Graceful Eats) on June 13, 2012 at 11:50 pm

Bahaha, I was going to recommend PW’s method too!

I think I’m a day ahead – I did cardio on Monday and then Workout 1 yesterday (Zumba for my cardio on both days!) and then took an inteeeense but stretchy yoga class this morning. As for eats, banana hazelnut muffin, apple + pb, salad beast, lentils, and a pita wrap!

  14. Mandy M on June 13, 2012 at 6:07 pm

Got up super early to get my run in this morning! Was out the door and running before 6 am.
Packed all my food last night because I knew I’d be gone from breakfast until dinner. So glad I did! But I have to catch up on my water. I don’t like to drink very much water when I’m out and about because I have a bladder about the size of a pea!
And those baby bullet containers are the cutest ever! Also, you could make the coffee the night before and chill it or make almond milk or coffee ice cubes to cure the watery iced coffee issue.

  15. Dana on June 13, 2012 at 6:13 pm

Brew double the amount of coffee grounds you’d use for hot coffee into a coffeepot already filled with ice (but only put half the amount of water in the machine! Otherwise it will overflow). Pour that into a glass of ice, and you’ll have a chilled, strong iced coffee 🙂

  16. Kristie on June 13, 2012 at 6:15 pm

I got a 30 minute run in during my lunch break today, which ended up being a good way to shake out some of my sore muscles from yesterday!

  17. Chelsa on June 13, 2012 at 6:21 pm

I just make coffee before bed and let it cool then put it in the refrigerator over night when I want iced in the morning. The baby food jars are adorable!!

  18. Madison on June 13, 2012 at 6:26 pm

Just got my 30 min of steady state in on the elliptical at lunch break! Scarfed down the sushi salad afterwards…SO GOOD.

    • Fitnessista on June 13, 2012 at 11:16 pm

glad you liked the sushi salad 🙂

  19. Rebecca on June 13, 2012 at 6:37 pm

I just found your website and I love it! I jumped into the summer shape up! Did my steady state cardio today! 45 mins alternating btwn treadmill, elliptical and bike 🙂 I recently lost 20 lbs and I now work out 5 days a week. I appreciate all the great workouts! Thank you! 🙂

    • Fitnessista on June 13, 2012 at 11:16 pm

      that is amazing- congratulations!!

  20. Rebecca on June 13, 2012 at 6:41 pm

Oh I forgot to ask! Any suggestions for the active recovery day tomorrow? If walking, how long should we aim for? 30 mins? Or longer? Thanks 🙂

    • Fitnessista on June 13, 2012 at 11:16 pm

      30 min is perfect!

  21. Kaycee St. Pierre on June 13, 2012 at 6:44 pm

I normally make a HUGE pot of coffee in the morning, so when the hubby and I don’t drink it all, I pour the rest in a container and store in the fridge for the next morning. This way, I can have my iced coffee, or choose to make a fresh pot of steamy hot coffee 🙂 oh the decisions!!!!!

  22. Ashley on June 13, 2012 at 6:46 pm

I was also going to the recommend the Pioneer Woman’s iced coffee. Yum!

You can also make coffee ice cubes so your drink doesn’t get watered down when they melt.

  23. Kate @KateMovingForward on June 13, 2012 at 6:56 pm

I completed a 4 mile walk! I normally run but a walk just seemed right today. 🙂

  24. Michelle on June 13, 2012 at 7:04 pm

You should try cold brewing your coffee to make coffee extract.
    http://smittenkitchen.com/2008/08/cold-brewed-iced-coffee/

  25. Ashley on June 13, 2012 at 7:07 pm

Did my cardio on the treadmill today, an incline workout 🙂
And I made the dijon chicken tonight but instead of chicken I used trader joes chicken-less strips and agave instead of honey and OMG!! Your recipes have yet to disappoint!!! You rock!

    • Fitnessista on June 13, 2012 at 11:15 pm

yay, i’m so glad you liked it!

  26. Alli on June 13, 2012 at 7:44 pm

I like to make a little extra coffee and then freeze it in the ice cube tray to use the next day.

  27. Laura on June 13, 2012 at 8:08 pm

I knew the end of the day would be crunched, so I was out running on the (rainy) road by 5:45 AM! Planning makes it happen 🙂

  28. Tara on June 13, 2012 at 8:26 pm

coffee solution – make ice cubes out of coffee and use those in your cold coffee – no watered down coffee. I do it and love it

  29. Abby F on June 13, 2012 at 8:35 pm

Another great day! Loving this program 🙂
Today I ate protein oats (not sure how I feel about them), greek quinoa (yum), and amaze balls (I think I’m mildly addicted) and for tonight I’m going to make chicken stir-fry instead. AND I just finished 48min of tae bow!! Woot woot.

    • Fitnessista on June 13, 2012 at 11:14 pm

      great job!

  30. Angela on June 13, 2012 at 8:45 pm

I’ve been following the work out plan great, just forgetting to check in!
Monday I ran 45 mins in a new town I’m living in for the month–it was perfect weather and a great exploratory run 😀
Tuesday I did the Summer ShapeUp and LOVED the variety and fast pace–made it feel like it flew by even though I was definitely working hard!
And today I went for a 30 minute swim and was super exhausted. It will be nice to have a rest/yoga day tomorrow!
Thank you so much for this workout plan!!

  31. Heatherann on June 13, 2012 at 8:51 pm

I did 35 minutes on the elliptical this morning.

  32. Trisha on June 13, 2012 at 8:54 pm

Did some running and elliptical today. I’m a first time summer shape-up gal, and I’m loving it!

  33. Emma @ BITE | Boredom Is The Enemy on June 13, 2012 at 9:17 pm

Thanks for the shoutout! I feel famous. I took today as my active rest day, but I have a long run on the docket for tomorrow morning. I’mma scrounge up some quality workout jams tonight…I’m thinking ABBA needs to make an appearance. Who quits on ’70s disco? (Not this girl.)

  34. Carla on June 13, 2012 at 9:25 pm

As soon as I get up I make my coffee, add sweetener and put the cup in the freezer while I shower/get ready, then I add milk, ice cubes and go!!

  35. Jenny on June 13, 2012 at 9:40 pm

I rocked the steady state cardio with a nice treadmill run this am while the babies slept!

  36. Dawn on June 13, 2012 at 9:41 pm

Not sure if anyone has suggested this yet but in addition to brewing the coffee the night before, you can make an extra pot and make ice cubes FROM coffee, so that way you’re just add a few frozen pieces of coffee to it.

  37. Siobhan on June 13, 2012 at 9:56 pm

Thanks for the shout out. That was a nice surprise when reading today. I also like the song- will have to add it to my playlist. Finished the half hour today running and am consciously drinking more water now. Looking forward to another go at the workout tomorrow!

    • Fitnessista on June 13, 2012 at 11:12 pm

      whoo hoo!

  38. crystal on June 13, 2012 at 10:24 pm

pinterest tells me to freeze coffee in the ice cube tray- BAM- no watery coffee! you can also freeze grapes for vino and a whole bunch of other great stuff. try it!

    • Fitnessista on June 13, 2012 at 11:12 pm

      bomb!

  39. Laury on June 13, 2012 at 10:48 pm

Yey for baby food! Babies LOVE peas! I give Ella them now with coconut oil, turmeric and cumin. She still goes nut for them!

  40. Amelia on June 13, 2012 at 10:52 pm

I’ll echo what others said about making the coffee the night before for iced coffee in the am.

Did a 6 mile run for steady state cardio. Looking forward to that active rest day. 🙂

  41. Susan on June 13, 2012 at 10:55 pm

You can make ice cubes out of coffee, so that when they melt your coffee stays the same strength 🙂

  42. Jayme Riley on June 13, 2012 at 11:30 pm

Ek! Thanks for the shoutout 🙂 30 minutes of biking happened at the gym today…my legs were still sore from yesterday!

  43. Maria on June 14, 2012 at 12:02 am

Day 3 complete! I’m nicely sore (as opposed to the you-can’t-walk-sore) from yesterday’s workout and feeling amazing! I completed 15 minutes on the stepmill tonight followed by 30 minutes on the elliptical with varying resistance levels…all while rocking out to the 90’s pop Pandora station. Needless to say, great workout!

Thank you again! This was exactly what I needed!

  44. leah o on June 14, 2012 at 1:52 am

Got in 30 minutes on the elliptical + water and eats from the meal schedule!

  45. Melissa (Better Fit) on June 14, 2012 at 5:16 am

Those baby food jars are really cute!

I’ve done some light cardio this morning already- cycling to work!

  46. Barbara on June 14, 2012 at 8:35 am

Make your iced coffee the night before and put it in the fridge! Then in the AM throw in a few cubes if you want. That’s what I do know that I have a K cup brewer – before I would make a whole pot, pour it in a pitcher and put it in the fridge to have iced coffee whenever!

  47. Carrie on June 14, 2012 at 8:47 am

Iced Coffee: Two Options. 1) make coffee ice cubes, so when the cubes melt, it doesn’t water down your coffee 2) More time consuming if you don’t have a french press, but way better tasting! Cold press coffee: put ground beans and water into a mason jar and shake up. Use about 1 and a half times the amount of beans you normally would. Sit on the counter overnight. Strain with a French press. If no french press, put a coffee filter set in a sieve (so it won’t fall in your jar) over a jar and pour slowly. It takes about 5 minutes of pour, stir to help it strain, wait for the liquid to fall through, but it is such good coffee!! And, since it’s room temp, no melting ice cubes! Hope you love it!

  48. lindsay @ prettylittleparadise on June 14, 2012 at 8:51 am

i LOVE homemade iced coffee and have it ready to bring with me to school every morning… the night before, i make the keurig cup of regular old hot coffee in my iced coffee travel mug and stick it in the fridge with the cover on… then, in the morning, i only need to add 4 or 5 ice cubes, soy milk, and sugar in the raw and it is perrrrrrfect! i have forgotten to make it at night before, and then i just do it in the a.m. and stick it in the freezer for awhile and add extra ice. i cannot stand when the ice melts in it though, so i try really hard to remember at night

  49. Shanii on June 14, 2012 at 8:55 am

Did your workout 1 yesterday and it’s either those step ups or my HIIT of jump roping but now my knee is kinda hurting. Which do you suggest did it – if you know anything – and also any suggestions for cardio for someone with bad knees and no gym equipment?

  50. Irene on June 14, 2012 at 9:43 am

Did my 40 minutes of cardio (elliptical) last night after dinner – thanks for the motivation! I never would have gone otherwise and it felt good to shake my legs out. We had the chicken caprese salad for dinner too – my husband and I both loved it. So much more filling with chicken added!
