Iced

Look! Ice cubes in my coffee:

Coffee 2

Thank you for all of the amazing iced coffee suggestions! I can’t wait to try Pioneer Woman’s recipe and make some coffee or almond milk ice cubes, too. For this morning, I just made the coffee and put it in the freezer to let it chill

Coffee 3

while I fed Liv, made breakfast

Oats 2

and got ready for work.

Snacks 2

(Chicken taco mix and rice in a snowman bowl, tortillas, hot sauce and a Larabar for this morning)

I LOVE that so many of you are following the Shape Up this year and have been checking in! Today is an active rest day, which just means (to me) to avoid doing anything too crazy outside of your normal routine. For example, if you have a pretty active lifestyle, there’s no need to spend it laying in bed (unless you really feel like it)- just go about the day per usual without a formal workout in there. Some gentle yoga or stretching is always a good idea, and taking the pup for a walk.

NewImage

(Bella = queen of interval training. Sprint around the house, take a nap, lather, rinse, repeat)

Thank you to those of you who have been tweeting me pics this week, too! I can’t wait to post some of them tomorrow. Tomorrow is also the last day of my blogiversary giveaway– don’t forget to enter if you haven’t already!

Hope you have an amazing day <3

See ya later on the Fashion page.

xoxo

Gina

I’m not a big coffee girl, but you’ve kinda got me craving an iced one! For my active rest, tonight after dinner, I’m heading out for a walk with one of my friends to catch up. Might just happen to stumble into David’s Tea… ya never know! 😉 Have a great afternoon Gina!

  2. Jessica on June 14, 2012 at 11:30 am

You can also make a big pot and put in the fridge and it will last a couple days! That way you can have your coffee with breakfast (if that’s when you like it) 🙂

  3. Rachel on June 14, 2012 at 11:31 am

I luuuuuuuurve making my own iced coffee. I grind a pound of beans, or get it freshly ground, throw it in a very large plastic pitcher, fill it to the top with cold water and let it steep for a full 12 hours, stirring a couple of times. I then strain it out with a very fine mesh strainer into a second picture and use a ration of 3/4 coffee to 1/4 added cold water, add ice cubes and enjoy! Love love love!

    • Rachel on June 14, 2012 at 11:32 am

I always brew mine cold, never brew hot coffee and then cool it, has a completely different taste. But that’s just me! Cold brewing tastes just like Starbucks to me!

  4. Amanda on June 14, 2012 at 11:33 am

You have a mac book pro right? How do you have a pink keyboard? I am in love!

    • Lauren on June 14, 2012 at 11:49 am

Go to amazon and look up keyboard covers. Tons of colors and really cheap :o)

  5. Kate @KateMovingForward on June 14, 2012 at 11:49 am

I’m spending the day running around with kids and I have some very active ones on my schedule today–playing tag with an ADHD 8 year old is no joke! haha! I’m dying to do some yoga so I’m going to make time for that tonight! Also tragedy of tragedies my coffeemaker died today. :'(

  6. Christina on June 14, 2012 at 12:02 pm

I have another suggestion for iced coffee and not sure if anyone has posted this one (i didn’t read through all the others!) but I have a french press and I cold brew. I put the coffee in at night (I use a little extra to make it strong since I add Ice in the morning) and stir it up. Let it sit over night and in the morning I “press” it. I put the left overs in a big mason jar! It usually lasts me about 2 days or so, but then I just brew again. SO easy!! And it’s great.

  7. Mandy M on June 14, 2012 at 12:06 pm

Just finished up 30 minutes of yoga. Feels so good and every time I do it I think I should try to fit it in everyday. This week has been so hectic so I’m really thankful that you made a schedule for my eats and workouts this week. Made it super simple for me.

  8. Ashley on June 14, 2012 at 12:10 pm

I shuffled around the days to fit my schedule so I ended up doing workout 1 + HIIT today and pushed myself a little harder this time. Still loved it!

  9. Christina on June 14, 2012 at 12:11 pm

Another idea if you drink iced coffee regularly is to brew an entire pot of coffee and then store it in a container in the fridge so it’s always ready to go. I have a friend that does this so she can have iced coffee whenever and she loves it. The coffee stays fresh a lot longer in the fridge too. I’m going to give the almond milk ice cubes a try, thats a great idea 😀

  10. Stefanie @TheNewHealthy on June 14, 2012 at 12:21 pm

I normally brew a whole pot of coffee and then put it in a pitcher to chill overnight. That’s good for a few days worth of iced coffee! It’s nice to have it on hand (and already chilled) when I need a pick me up. 🙂

  11. Sam on June 14, 2012 at 12:27 pm

I’m not exactly doing the Shape-Up because I’m doing my trainer’s workouts right now, but I totally bookmarked yours for when I need an extra session!! It looks awesome. However, I have been trying to “shape up” my eats in fun ways! You’ll never believe what I had with my egg whites for breakfast: 1/4 of a papaya filled with chia pudding! It was my first time making chia pudding and it’s seriously delicious! (2 tbsp chia, 1/2 c. lite coconut milk, 1/2 cup almond milk, vanilla+stevia, overnight in the fridge). It looked so weird (pretty though!) – everyone at work thought I was insane 🙂

  12. Melissa (Better Fit) on June 14, 2012 at 12:27 pm

For active rest, I usually just do a bit of cycling (commuter style) but I love a good stretch session for rest days! 🙂

  13. Lauren @ Sassy Molassy on June 14, 2012 at 12:29 pm

Active rest for me usually means walks, an easy hike or bike ride or yoga – something that’s not too hard cardio or strength wise. 🙂

Oh and I did 3 rounds of workout 1 last night at the gym. It was a good one!

  14. Stephanie on June 14, 2012 at 12:32 pm

    Hi Gina!
I have a question not related to this post…I went back to read some of your early pregancy posts and you were saying that you ate a lot of pineapple because it would help with implantation (and I guess it did 🙂 ). However now I’m also reading that you shouldn’t eat pineapple because it might stimulate labor. Have you ever heard of this? I still have one waiting for me at home and now I’m not sure if it’s good to eat it or bad to eat it!

    • Stephanie on June 14, 2012 at 6:03 pm

PS: I noticed your purple keyboard as well. Very cool – when you first showed your laptop I thought it looked soo boring compared to Pinkie!

  15. Stephanie @ Legally Blinde on June 14, 2012 at 12:34 pm

Oh my gosh, is your keyboard pinkish/ purplish? So cute!!!

  16. Abby @ Change of Pace on June 14, 2012 at 12:36 pm

Love the keyboard on your laptop!
For active rest I ride my cruiser bike (that I cannot go fast on!), go for an easy swim, or take the pup for a long walk. Lately, I’ve been trying to add in some gentle yoga on my recovery days.
Have a good day at work!

  17. Erica on June 14, 2012 at 12:37 pm

Umm, ok, I’m checking in for today but I didn’t exactly rest…oops. I looked at the calendar wrong and thought tomorrow was the rest day and today was another day of workout 1. Sooooo, I’ll just switch up today and tomorrow I guess and look forward to an easy day tomorrow! Yay for Friday!

  18. Clare on June 14, 2012 at 12:40 pm

I was planning on going for a nice walk this evening, but its now raining (yay for English summers, not!). I think I’n going to try to fit in a little yoga instead.

  19. Averie @ Averie Cooks on June 14, 2012 at 12:48 pm

I am with Christina above. I just put the whole pot (or leftover from a pot of hot coffee after I’m done) into a container and store in the fridge. That way I always have iced coffee AND I never waste coffee by dumping it. A win-win!

  20. Mel on June 14, 2012 at 12:49 pm

Somebody probably mentioned this already but I believe you have a keurig – I recently buoght the “brew over ice” coffee pods for mine and they’re great! Specifically made for iced coffee, and there is also an iced tea/lemonade iced tea flavour. I also do the coffee ice-cube thing. 🙂

  21. Katie @ Talk Less, Say More on June 14, 2012 at 12:50 pm

I LOVE iced coffee. I only drank 1 cup of coffee this morning so I can have iced coffee with the second one later on today. It’s one of my favorite things! 🙂

On my rest days I like to go for a walk on my lunch break or do a quick 20 minute Yoga session. I love to be active, so I find it hard to just take a day off.

  22. Rebecca on June 14, 2012 at 12:58 pm

Lunch: quinoa, black beans, cherry tomatoes and avocado dressed in avocado oil and lemon juice. Served over a hefty bed of mixed greens. Followed by two perfectly ripe apricots. Lots of water.

I’m following the workouts diligently and LOVE them! Today I’m going to a yoga class. It’s hot yoga and is definitely intense, but the stretching feels so good and I’m used to going at least 4x a week, so it really is part of the usual routine.

I’m already planning next week’s meals–I have to pack a lot of meals to transport, so it’s helpful to choose a few things to eat each week to make life easier. I’m thinking protein smoothies for breakfast…which one is your current fave?

  23. Amy on June 14, 2012 at 1:04 pm

I did steady cardio on our elliptical this morning and yoga last night (had to switch up your schedule), so my rest day is tomorrow. Although, with an almost 18-month-old, it is definitely active rest! 🙂
As far as food, I’ve been so lazy about lunches lately (fruit, yogurt, snacks, etc.), but since our CSA just started, dinners this week have been healthy and delicious!

  24. Shaya (Eye Girl Eats) on June 14, 2012 at 1:04 pm

yesterday was going to be my rest day, but I ended up going on a spontaneous girl’s night dancing at the bars. 2 hours of cardio in heels, with rest during songs I don’t like = poor girl’s HIIT 😉

  25. Shannon on June 14, 2012 at 1:05 pm

I did 30 minutes of incline walking and jogging on the treadmill followed by stretching because I’m about to spend 4 lovely hours on a plane. I don’t know about the rest of you girls but a pre-flight gym sesh is essential for my back and legs! As for eats I am getting my protein fix with cottage cheese, almond butter, and Greek yogurt – yum!

  26. Alicia @culinarybliss on June 14, 2012 at 1:06 pm

I ran for 30 min. yesterday, which is a little more than I usually do so it felt good. I was surprised at how much it loosened up my muscles, which were feeling tense after the first circuit. I’m really looking forward to a hatha practice after baby goes to bed. My body (and brain) really need it. I also am looking more forward to doing the circuit tomorrow because I am familiar with the exercises. And my post baby belly is (not) excited about the bedtime burner!

  27. pluvk on June 14, 2012 at 1:18 pm

Well, so much for active rest! For some reason, I woke up early and thought today was HIIT + Workout 1. Oops! I did a Tabata interval, and then got ready for workout 1 and realized my mistake!! I just did my HIIT… would it be okay to do the Workout 1 tomorrow without HIIT?

  28. stacy01 on June 14, 2012 at 1:22 pm

Hi! I really appreciate your topic. I’m a coffee lover too and use to drink coffee with an ice. The taste is good drives me to drink another glass of coffee. It’s really relaxing.

  29. Anna @ The Guiltless Life on June 14, 2012 at 1:23 pm

I love how many different city Starbucks mugs I see over the blogs – we have the Whistler and Vancouver ones so I love checking out all the different ones!

That was a totally random comment but I just felt like saying it ;).

  30. Abby F on June 14, 2012 at 1:31 pm

I’m going to do yoga today! I know it’s going to feel SOO good. I also ate the breakfast cookie this morning with rasins, banana and coconut! It tasted good but was kinda soggy so I think I’ll add less soy milk next time. 🙂

  31. Stacy Seratt on June 14, 2012 at 1:42 pm

Its a yoga day for me….need stretching in my life…

So far today I have had a smoothie, 1/2 apple + 1/2 Pure protein bar, salad beast.
Still have a snack and dinner (something chicken, I bet!) to go

  32. Caralyn @ glutenfreehappytummy on June 14, 2012 at 1:45 pm

aw Bella is so precious! and almond milk ice cubes are GENIUS! sounds fabulous! and your breakfast is drool-tastic! haha thanks for sharing!

  33. sarah b. on June 14, 2012 at 1:59 pm

For rest day: took my youngest to baby and me yoga (he slept through it, so you know it was relaxing) and then swimming lessons for my toddlers. Eats tonight: bourbon marinated salmon, grilled veggies and salad from the farmers market.

  34. Irene on June 14, 2012 at 2:02 pm

I love coffee – iced, hot whatever SO MUCH. Cutting back on caffeine (I’m supposed to have completely given it up but it was too hard) has seriously been hard for me. I still drink a little decaf, and I might have to try making my own iced version.
I have a pilates lesson tonight, and they are usually pretty intense so I don’t know if I’m going to count it as active rest. I might wait another day to do circuit one on Saturday. I really want to follow along so I’m trying to figure it out! Suggestions welcome:)

  35. Shelley on June 14, 2012 at 2:03 pm

I did my steady state yesterday too (a 5K), & will do it today b/c I skipped it & “rested” on Monday.

  36. Kathleen @ KatsHealthCorner on June 14, 2012 at 2:06 pm

Your breakfast looks DELICIOUS!!! I love oatmeal with berries and frosted with nut butter! 😀

  37. Amy Prentice on June 14, 2012 at 2:17 pm

Since the muscles are feeling a little tired from day 1- 3, I am looking forward to some yoga!! Thank you on demand! Meals are going well – although its always a task cooking vegetarian dinners for the non vegetarian hubby.

    Loving the summer shape up!

  38. Amy on June 14, 2012 at 2:24 pm

Eats today have been: Breakfast: Smoothie and Banana almond muffin ( I loved these!) my boys – not so much… but I think it was because they had theirs right out of the oven. I ate mine when I got to work and it had a completely different taste from the bite I tried of theirs. Lunch – salad beast. Snack later is apple with goat cheese, and not sure about dinner yet. I did mix up the Greek quinoa salad last night. Might pair that with some protein.
More than likely my rest day will be just that – a rest day.

  39. Edie Reed on June 14, 2012 at 2:32 pm

For active rest day I did fifteen minutes of yoga, and cleaning which sometimes counts as a workout. For lunch I am having a salad beast, they are just so good and I get all my veggies that way.

  40. Beth on June 14, 2012 at 2:44 pm

Tonight, I am playing kickball on an adult kickball league. Not exactly exercise, but not exactly rest either. Still feeling it from the circuit and HIIT last night! 😉

  41. Courtney @ Outrunning Insecurities on June 14, 2012 at 2:50 pm

On rest days I usually just go with the flow since I’m training 6 days a week for a half marathon and don’t want to put too much strain on my legs. Sometimes I just lounge around the house, and other times I go and run errands. I work out early in the morning, so on rest days I usually just sleep when I’d normally be working out, and then go about my day as if I’d worked out that morning.

  42. wendy on June 14, 2012 at 3:29 pm

I did a 45 min Pilates class this morning. I am not sure if that counted as rest, it was a tough one today! Tonight I am stretching while watching TV.

  43. Lisa on June 14, 2012 at 3:30 pm

I LOVE coffee, but actually am not much of an iced coffee fan! I don’t know why, it just seems to taste much different to me. And your keyboard is the prettiest thing I’ve seen! Love that.

  44. Megan S. on June 14, 2012 at 3:49 pm

Today I did some stretching, I coach later this evening and plan on taking the dog for a long walk! I love rest days 🙂

P.S- I love your keyboard keys! Where did you get that from??

  45. Michelle @ Turning Over a New Leaf on June 14, 2012 at 3:58 pm

My active rest for the day? Walking home from work! That counts right? 😉

  46. Rachel C on June 14, 2012 at 4:17 pm

I used yesterday as my active rest day, so I was back at the gym today! I work out during lunch so I have limited time (60 minutes) but I did the Week 1 Workout circuit twice and did a 10 min HIIT workout on the treadmill. I managed to get 1 mile! I love the Shape Up program. It is definitely helping me stay in track and push myself!

  47. Leah O on June 14, 2012 at 4:27 pm

Made my first breakfast cookie this morning with almond butter, carob chips, golden raisins, and coconut. So delicious!

  48. Mallory @ Teach Run Repeat on June 14, 2012 at 4:31 pm

Got asked to babysit last night when I had plans for the gym (need the $$!)…so, I just flipped yesterday and today and got in some spinning this morning! Thinking about going for a walk with my mom later as it cools down…no calorie left unburned!

  49. Talia @ Bite Size Wellness on June 14, 2012 at 4:32 pm

Yoga, walk or just hang out with friends or maybe all of the above with friends! Just depends on my mood. Love your summer shape up and THRILLED that you ice coffee problemo is solved:)

  50. Alexandra on June 14, 2012 at 4:44 pm

I LOVE rest days!! Having a day or two a week that are PLANNED to rest and do no form of “real” exercise really helps me to push myself on those other days. I have about 3 or 4 friends who are injured right now and have been told by their doctors to stop all exercise for 6-8 weeks and it was ALL due to overtraining! This is why I love your outlook on fitness and healthy living so much..its always challenging yet doable!!
