Music Monday playlist

Good morning! Happy new week to ya 🙂

I think we all woke up with a case of the “smushy face” over here.

Smushy face

Sometimes when Bella wakes up, half of her face is smushed up and we’ll call her smushy face.

I slept horribly last night. I have no idea if it was the wine or the sugar that gave me wicked nightmares, but I had a glass of wine with dinner, and after dominating the innards of two pieces of apple pie, I decided to top it off with a macaron before bed. The chocolate kept me awake, and when I finally crashed out, I dreamt that something awful happened to Bella right in front of Liv and myself. I woke up from the dream with tears all over my face…

Breakfast:

Oats

(oats with apple, almond butter and Sun Warrior- I made them and put them in the fridge to cool while Liv ate and we played for a while)

It was an amazing weekend. We had dinner at my dad’s house to celebrate on Saturday night:

dinner

A gorgeous salad with peppers, tomato, celery, green onions and greens, fruit, bread, wild rice, sautéed mushrooms and broccoli, yellow chicken (my dad is the chicken master)

When we got home, the sunset after the monsoon was outta control.

Sunset 2

We went upstairs to take some pictures,

Sunset

and then came back inside and took a video of Livi, who had been sleeping- she was snoring so peacefully (and adorably).

Us

Messy post-teaching hair.

Everyone came over here for Father’s Day dinner, and it was an awesome family celebration. Mom and nana made a ton of food -I contributed the twice-baked potatoes and wedge salads- and our house still smells like bacon. The Pilot has no prob with that 😉

I’m so excited that so many of you have been following the Summer Shape Up workouts and meal ideas this year! Please keep me updated on your progress by tweeting and checking in each morning- I love to hear your feedback and how everything is going.

On Mondays, I thought it would be fun to share some music for the workouts and our current power songs. Having a baller playlist always helps me to have a better workout- especially if there’s a new song that I love.

I put together a little Spotify playlist to go with this week’s workout. The Michael Buble song is for a cool down, just because I love it 😉

Any songs you’re crazy about right now?

Be sure to check in here when you finish your week 2 workout and HIIT (15-20 min) for the day!

Week 2 photo

All of the workouts and meal plans for this year’s Shape Up can be found on the intro post (along with the calendar), and I’ll also add it to the Fitness page.

Hope you have a very happy Monday!

xoxo,

Gina

Sugar before bed can be rough. For me it doesn’t give me nightmares but just throws my whole body off the next day and I usually have a hard time stomaching breakfast in the morning. 🙁

    • Fitnessista on June 18, 2012 at 11:56 am

i had to force myself to eat something- i felt sooo blah

  2. Marissa@ohhhsolovely on June 18, 2012 at 12:06 pm

i know what you mean…the sugar from yesterday’s festivities left me feeling a little off last night as well. but, thankfully, i’m back on track today!

  3. Sana on June 18, 2012 at 12:07 pm

I feel like I remember you blogging about nightmares before and I think it was b/c of wine? Either way, super scary, I hope you don’t have them again 🙁

  4. Stephanie on June 18, 2012 at 12:08 pm

I’ve noticed a difference in your photos recently. Did you get a new camera?

  5. Lenore on June 18, 2012 at 12:09 pm

Oh man! After having nightmares like that, I usually will be super careful with the puppies for the next few weeks. I know it could’ve been what I ate or drank before I went to bed, but I am cautious just the same! But instead of wine, it’s a pizza from a local restaurant that does it to me!

Have fun with the smushy face! Hopefully, you will have sweet dreams to make up for it tonight!

  6. Staci on June 18, 2012 at 12:10 pm

My favorite workout song right now is “Titanium” David Guetta and Sia. I love it! It gets me so pumped!

  7. Liz @ Tip Top Shape on June 18, 2012 at 12:11 pm

I hate having unsettling dreams. It might have been the sugar. I know sometimes when I eat weird it messes up my sleep. Hope tonight is better!

  8. Pam on June 18, 2012 at 12:15 pm

Checking in! Workout 2 was cool, although I think I prefer shorter circuits myself (2-3 exercises, loop em and lose em). The plank sequence was tough! And I think I overdid it on my poor wrist. I know doing forearm planks is just different, but it still feels like I’m punking out when I need to drop down.

  9. Sara @ The Foodie Diaries on June 18, 2012 at 12:25 pm

Looks like you all had a wonderful Father’s Day! 🙂 My dog, Cole, will wake up and his hair is smushed all over his face to the point where we can’t even see his eyes! I always call him my little smushie 🙂

  10. Julia on June 18, 2012 at 12:26 pm

I’m a sucker when it comes to sunsets. My sister and I literally have over 1,000
pictures of it from our annual holiday at the Baltic Sea!
It looks so incredibly fantastic!!! 🙂

  11. Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat on June 18, 2012 at 12:26 pm

Looks like you had a really fun weekend Gina – minus those nightmares.. crazy! The sunset looks amazing. One song I can’t get enough of right now, which really isn’t a workout jam, but I suppose a good one for a cool-down, is Shadow Days by John Mayer. LOVE!

  12. Anna @ The Guiltless Life on June 18, 2012 at 12:27 pm

Ah love that you have Uprising by Muse on there – I tend to find any of Muse’s songs have a great beat that gets you going! I still love Supermassive Black Hole, even though it’s kinda their biggest hit as it were.

Sorry about your bad dream 🙁 – sugar before bed (well, ever really but I’m particularly sensitive to sugar) always does that to me. Because I can’t tolerate sugar and it makes me quite ill, if I am going to have it I tend to have it at night so I sleep off the physical effects but yes, then it always messes up my dreams and I really struggle to fall asleep too :(.

  13. Karen on June 18, 2012 at 12:29 pm

Finished my week 2 workout 2 ….checking in!

    • Fitnessista on June 18, 2012 at 12:33 pm

      how was it?!

  14. Erica on June 18, 2012 at 12:33 pm

Checking in with my first workout of week 2! I’ve been walking on the treadmill at 3mph and constant 12-15% incline for my cardio because of bum ankle (no running, boo!), and this morning was planning on warming up for 10 mins before I started the weights portion. Buttttt, I started watching my DVR-ed “Dallas” episode from last week and ended up warming up for 20! Heehee;) After the weights portion I hopped back on the treadmill to finish up the episode.

Note to self: pick up an exercise ball stat! I modified, but I’d really like one anyway.
Note to G: those diamond push ups are killerrrr! I thought I was going to fall on my face more than once! Ha!

  15. Elle on June 18, 2012 at 12:38 pm

Alcohol messes up my sleep big time! Whenever I go to the bars I wake up at 6 o’clock in the morning, even on weekends when I can sleep in and usually have crazy dreams. My roommates and boyfriend would sleep until noon and I’d be wide awake…Hopefully you get a better night sleep tonight!

I did the workout today! I really enjoyed it, my legs and arms were shaking. Maybe I’m not doing it right but for some reason the star planks really hurt my bottom hip even with the modifications so I might switch it out next time. My hips always cause me problems, I’m only 22 but fifteen years of ballet messed up my hips/feet really badly.

  16. Eucalya on June 18, 2012 at 12:50 pm

I have trouble sleeping when i drink alcohol just before bed too! And btw, beautiful sunset pictures!
I did the workout today and i thought i was going to die when i had to do the side-to-side jumps! I also modified cause i don’t have a stability ball. And the diamonds push-up kiiiilled me! Well I think your workout is perfect 😉 now i’m gonna go to my dance classes (can’t wait to start zumba in september) and then when I come home do the bedtime ab-burner! xxx

  17. Jen on June 18, 2012 at 12:58 pm

Weird – I had a nightmare about something bad happening to my cat! It was awful. Hope you have a better sleep tonight!

  18. Averie @ Averie Cooks on June 18, 2012 at 1:22 pm

That sunset is just…beyond gorgeous!! WOW!

And one reason I rarely drink anymore is that it messes with my sleep, horribly. Seriously cannot get a good night’s sleep after a glass of wine that it’s just not even worth it. Gosh I am getting old 🙂

  19. S. on June 18, 2012 at 1:36 pm

Just finished the workout + 10 min HIIT (I’m running a little short on time today)! I loved it, those plank stars are tough, I had to do them on my knee! Also, the pilates swim is more challenging than it looks, especially since you do it after all those other moves!

  20. Natalie on June 18, 2012 at 1:41 pm

I had the same sleeping problem last night too. I ate a lot of sugar and think that may have been the cause. I wonder why sugar does that? Sunday nights are usually bad sleep nights for me no matter what anyway though.

  21. Julie on June 18, 2012 at 1:54 pm

Checking in! I’m a little late to the party and am just starting, but I did my workout 1 and HIIT this morning. Awesome way to start the day! I was sweaaating!!

  22. Lauren on June 18, 2012 at 1:57 pm

Just did workout 2 and HIIT. The little cardio spurts within workout 2 were a nice challenge. I always find cardio within strength training to be tough b/c my muscles are so shaky! Great sweat sesh! 😀

  23. Danielle@cleanfoodcreativefitness on June 18, 2012 at 2:10 pm

Bella is just adorable! Those oats look so great! Might have to try that combo sometime this week! Happy Monday!

  24. Katie H on June 18, 2012 at 2:11 pm

Workout 2 and HIT completed…I am feeling the burn! I loved the jumprope and I know I will feel the star planks tomorrow!

  25. Stephanie @ Legally Blinde on June 18, 2012 at 2:16 pm

Wow, stunning sunset! I hope you get some rest after your rough night. Sounds like you had a wonderful Father’s Day weekend!

  26. Courtney @ Outrunning Insecurities on June 18, 2012 at 2:25 pm

Sorry about the rough night. I’m blessed/cursed with almost no dreams whatsoever. If I get one once a month it’s unusual.
And who would mind a house smelling like bacon? Bacon smells amazing. Better than any air freshener 🙂

    • Fitnessista on June 18, 2012 at 3:09 pm

i don’t even eat bacon, and still think it smells outta control amazing

  27. Lisa on June 18, 2012 at 2:29 pm

Sugar before bed is not a good combo for me, its like caffeine, I just will be up all night. Alcohol though, usually just makes me pass out pretty quickly. Sorry about the not so good night! I’m on this medication right now and it makes me have the worst nightmares, not fun at all. That is an absolutely gorgeous sunset!!

  28. Caralyn @ glutenfreehappytummy on June 18, 2012 at 2:33 pm

wow that sunset is just breath taking!! I’m sorry about your rough night:( no fun. at. all. Hopefully tonight is a better night!

  29. Sam on June 18, 2012 at 2:40 pm

I’m going to try workout #2 tonight! I packed a great salad beast for lunch today- TJ’s chili lime chicken burger atop romaine with avocado, tomato, roasted peppers, and TJ’s light champagne vinaigrette. yum. for dinner tonight I made a quick sorta-eggplant-parm in a bowl with oven-roasted eggplant, sauce, mozz, and a crumbled veggie burger for protein.
I’m not doing your meal plan because I’m moving soon & have to eat up what I have in the house, but my eats are inspired by you!

  30. Rachel C on June 18, 2012 at 3:34 pm

The Week 2 workout is a beast! I made it through twice and almost died, but I feel awesome for finishing. I don’t have time to do the circuit and HIIT together, so I will get in a 30 minute HIIT tomorrow during my lunch workout. Tonight I am going to attempt the Ab Burner.

I’m not following the official meal plan (my husband is way too picky and doesn’t believe in veggies), but I am working hard to eat healthy, clean and within my calorie range for the 4 weeks. So far so good and I can already tell a difference in how I feel.

  31. corrie anne on June 18, 2012 at 3:58 pm

Beautiful picture of you two!!! I’m not doing the plan myself, but I love the meal ideas!!

  32. Emma S. on June 18, 2012 at 4:06 pm

The Star Plank was hard!! Had to give up on the weights just to keep my balance, but deffo showed it off at the gym and even influenced others (including a PT mate of mine!)
Any tips for motivating yourself through the hardest parts? I got to that point where I really had no motivation and kept getting frustrated when I couldn’t do something. Boo!

    • Fitnessista on June 18, 2012 at 4:15 pm

the star plank is really hard, but i wanted to have something extra challenging in there! don’t be frustrated- just take a break or modify (or skip something!)

      • Emma S. on June 18, 2012 at 4:49 pm

It whipped my butt, but determined to master it! Didn’t help doing it straight after an early shift at work but will be back on it later in the week 🙂 thanks for the challenge, definitely earning my summer body x

  33. Amanda on June 18, 2012 at 4:09 pm

I think everyone had a rough night last night. I was up sick all night b/c I have been eating pretty healthy, then ate ice cream and chips at my parents yesterday and I think it really affected me. It wasn’t fun while I was sick, but it’s nice to know that my body is starting to reject processed foods.

  34. Kayla on June 18, 2012 at 4:29 pm

I just finished Workout 2 and am off to the gym for my HIIT. I did three rounds of the workout, and I am drenched in sweat and my arms are shaking. The planks are killer; the pushups were a good challenge, but the side-to-side jumps were tough right after them. All in all, I’m SUPER proud of myself: I did it with a pretty bad sunburn on my back from gardening yesterday!

  35. Casey on June 18, 2012 at 4:33 pm

Another killer workout– i loved it! My favorite part about the Summer Shape up is that it really pushed me outside of my comfort zone. I’ve been hearing of the benefits of HIIT and now that I’m actually doing it I don’t think I’ll ever go back 🙂

  36. Mandy M on June 18, 2012 at 4:42 pm

I thought that maybe you were trying to kill me this morning. Those star planks kicked my booty. And I always hate lunge jumps. I swear you said that this week was less cardio heavy than last week…thinking I must have heard you wrong. I was doing some heavy breathing. Did Week 2 three times thru and finished it off with ZWOW 10. 10 minutes of high knees, burpees, and kettle ball jumps.
Thanks for another amazing week of workouts and eats.

  37. Abby on June 18, 2012 at 4:43 pm

That star plank is ridic! Just finished workout 2 and it was awesome!

  38. Chelsea on June 18, 2012 at 4:49 pm

Just finished Workout 2–3 times through the circuit, and I am definitely going to be feeling it tomorrow!!! Those plank stars are no joke! Followed with 20 mins HIIT on the treadmill, and another 10 mins steady state jogging. 🙂

  39. Courtney on June 18, 2012 at 5:04 pm

I am so guilty of over-doing it on the sugar before bed – I tossed and turned last night! No more wining and sleeping. 😉

  40. Madison @ Pilates Makes You Happy on June 18, 2012 at 5:07 pm

We totally listened to Uprising this morning in Spin! Great, GREAT song!

  41. Ana on June 18, 2012 at 5:15 pm

Workout #2 was humbling! I could only do 2 full circuits knowing that I was doing HIIT after…thanks for the challenge! I just have to remember to do the ab burner tonight 🙂

  42. Angela on June 18, 2012 at 6:12 pm

My dog gets the same smushy face after sleeping it’s so cute! Those sunset pictures are amazing!

  43. Siobhan on June 18, 2012 at 6:24 pm

Thanks for the playlist!!! I’m super excited to add those in with the workout 2 (I didn’t look at today’s post until after I did it). Great workout too- I agree that the star planks were killer but I’m super sweaty and loving it. HIIT is done (treadmill). Ready for the ab burner later tonight…as for fruits and veggies? check! water?…mostly check. Does coconut water count? (wishful thinking)…(I’m also sorry about your dream- I’ve had a few awful ones about losing my pets too- makes me cuddle them more than usual the next morning, which not all of them appreciate. Maybe tea would help tonight instead of sugar/wine mix?)

  44. Sara on June 18, 2012 at 6:33 pm

Sugar and alcohol before bed always gives me a really light and restless sleep. It doesn’t take much to throw off my sleeping anyway. The biggie is alcohol. If I don’t give it couple of hours between vino and matress, I’ll sleep a couple of hours then spring awake in the middle of the night and take ages to ‘lax down again.

  45. Jordan @ Bake Write Sleep on June 18, 2012 at 6:38 pm

I LOVE Muse. Also, the pictures of the sky… The sky looks like fire. That’s amazingly gorgeous =]

  46. sarah b. on June 18, 2012 at 6:46 pm

Checking in with week two – I loved the week two workout even more than week one. My mother was in town helping me out with the kiddos and she (68 years old!!!) did it with me. We had a blast. Followed it with a series of plyos for HIIT and a long stroll with my kids 🙂

  47. Laura on June 18, 2012 at 6:51 pm

I did the Week 2 workout this morning and LOVED it – but the star planks kicked my tush! I had to put down the weight and do it just BW, and I still had to drop to my knee. Challenge accepted. 🙂 Did three rounds of the workout but did not make it to HIIT today (I’m morning exerciser and I was going to be late for work!) I’m doing the bedtime ab burner in a little while, but I’m going to move the HIIT to another day this week.

  48. Jenny on June 18, 2012 at 6:59 pm

Workout 2 is great, thanks for all the variety! Is there another way to do the hamstring work w/o a stab. Ball? A chair? Suggestions??

    • Fitnessista on June 18, 2012 at 7:07 pm

yep just regular hip raises will do- try one leg to make it more challenging. then a small pillow between your ankles for the ball raises

  49. Natalie @ FreshLifeFindings on June 18, 2012 at 7:03 pm

Thanks for the Summer Shape Up workout 2! It kicked my butt and I was dying during those star planks. Thanks for challenging me!

  50. Liz @ Southern Charm on June 18, 2012 at 7:44 pm

Happy belated Father’s Day to the pilot!!

And I LOVE the smushy face!! Especially when I wake my white fluffball up – I get the smushy face AND the what do you think you’re doing look. LOVE IT!
