On a whim

Morning, friends! How’s your day treating you? 🙂

flowers

Things are good over here. I’ve got my stuff ready to go for work and have CPR training before my shifts today –mine needs to be renewed. I know this experience will be better than my last cert. In Valdosta, I had a way creepy instructor who used me as the “demonstrator” and I didn’t want him anywhere near my belly button thankyouverymuch.

B-fast:

bagel

-gluten-free Udi’s bagel (I’m in bagel love)

-egg whites

-goat cream cheese

Packed lunch:

lunch

-organic avocado

-organic green grapes

-mini salad beast (with romaine, sundried tomatoes, artichoke hearts, sunflower seeds)

-leftover carrot, beet bean burger 🙂

I also have my 5 outfits packed up. 1 for weight room supervisor, 1 for teaching, 1 for my own workout, 1 for pool and 1 for Zumba. Lots of laundry over here, fo sho.

So ever since the Pilot has been home, I’ve been wanting to take a vacay with him. He started work yesterday and I figured that it would be best to go now before things get really crazy with his work schedule. Yesterday, I texted him and said “Vegas?” and was so excited when he wrote back and said “sure, why not?”
We’re going to Vegas, baby 😀

strip

It’s for a few days –that’s all ya need!- and I can’t wait- Vegas is one of my all-time faves. We went last year with some friends and had a blasty, but I’m excited to spend time just the two of us 🙂 We leave Sunday morning!

Some of my favorite Las Vegas stops:

Spa Club at Canyon Ranch (Venetian)

juice

Dinner at Mesa Grill

mesa pilot

Brunch at Mon Ami Gabi

mon ami (2)

Cabana chillaxin

cabana (2) cabana

Watching the Bellagio fountains

us (2) fountains

Shopping my face off 🙂

shopping

So tell me friends, what are your favorite must-sees and must-dos in Vegas? We’d also like to see a show, so if you have any show recommendations, that would be awesome too 🙂

Off to do the work thang- see ya later today with that Reader’s Request post <3

xoxo

Oooh wow that’s so exciting Gina!! I’ve never been to Vegas but I’d like to go, just for a few days! Can’t wait to see what you get up to this time.. some new finds for the fashion page maybe? 😉 And on another note – ewww about the CPR instructor! I have been pretty lucky with my re-certs and my instructor has been awesome. Have a wonderful day!

Ah, how fun! I saw Beatles Love a few years and it was fantastic! I’m not certain if it’s still playing, but I’d definitely recommend it! 🙂

    • Yvette on June 2, 2011 at 12:05 pm

That’s the one I was going to recommend!

You will never believe that I have NEVER been to Vegas?! WTF? It is the cheapest vacay and yet I never made it my mission to get there. I am swaying a bit on my vegas ways now and was looking last week for a cheap flight from Vancouver there 🙂

    You will have a blast!!

I had no idea you wore so many hats in one day 🙂
    xxoo

    • Fitnessista on June 2, 2011 at 11:05 am

omg girl you would LOVE it 🙂
and yes, i wear many many hats 😉

  6. Anna on June 2, 2011 at 11:03 am

I’ve never been to Vegas, but it looks like a blast!! Being 20, I have vacationed only really with my parents, and they much prefer hanging out in Europe with some old churches 😉 I lead a very glamorous life.

Glad you and the Pilot have a special trip planned. You two deserve it!

  7. Colleen on June 2, 2011 at 11:04 am

I just took a spur of the moment trip with my hubby for memorial day, not nearly as cool as Vegas though! So much fun, and so great to reconnect with each other. I would definitely go to a Cirque de Soleil show. I just saw my first Cirque show this year (Totem) and I had to scrape my jaw off the floor at the end. THey are amazing!

  8. Ari@ThE DiVa DiSh on June 2, 2011 at 11:05 am

vegas sounds like a blast! Last time we were there I wanted to go to MESA grill SO badly!
I love vacations just with my hubby. They are so relaxing and just fun to be with one another 🙂 have a great time!!

  9. Mac on June 2, 2011 at 11:05 am

Very jealous you are able to take a trip on a whim! Come on job market, hit me with a good job real soon!

omg. hands down, best meal of my life

  11. Brandi on June 2, 2011 at 11:08 am

Last time I was in Vegas, I went to this restaurant called Switch where the walls and ceilings would change every 15 minutes or so. It was pretty crazy! They also had vegan options on their menu which made me a pretty happy girl!

I mostly just like people watching in Vegas. You see some pretty crazy characters out there.

Oh and SHOPPING. Can’t beat that. We went to the H&M in Caesars and it was like a dance party in the store.

    • Fitnessista on June 2, 2011 at 11:10 am

whoa i haven;t heard of switch! will have to check it out 🙂
and you’re so right- people watching is the best

  12. sarah (sarah learns) on June 2, 2011 at 11:09 am

i’ve never been to vegas before, but that’s so awesome that you two are taking a random spur of the moment vacation!!! 🙂

  13. Chelsea @ Go Chelsea Go! on June 2, 2011 at 11:10 am

I’ve never been to Vegas, but I’ve always wanted to go!! I read a news article a couple months ago about a new hotel being built so oddly that it reflects the sunlight in a concentrated laser-like fashion (like when kids use a magnifying glass to kill ants with the sun-laser). I’d want to check that out for sure 🙂 even if it is a little nerdy.

  14. Leanne (Bride to Mrs.) on June 2, 2011 at 11:11 am

Have fun!!! I love spontaneous trips <3

  15. Chelsea on June 2, 2011 at 11:11 am

I love Vegas! We went last July on our way back from San Diego. Who know it was cheaper to stop in Vegas for 2 days then to fly directly back to Canada?!? I loved the Jersey Boys show, its a classic. There is also a restaurant in Caesar’s palace called “munchbar” that had amazing chicken fingers and sweet potato fries. It was our time there so we spent most of our time walking around.
    Have a wonderful vacay!

  16. Mindy on June 2, 2011 at 11:12 am

Wow, that is a lot of laundry! And a lot of workout outfits to have!

We also love vegas! We got married there b/c we eloped, my parents didn’t approve so since we couldn’t do a traditional Indian wedding we did the Vegas thing, but made sure it wasn’t cheesy. 😉

We usually try to see a cirque show if we can, or some other kind of show. And we love playing blackjack b/c you meet so many crazy fun/random/weird people at the table. Also love trying new restaurants, but we always eat at Tamba Indian restaurant every time we are there. Have you eaten there?

  17. Chelsea on June 2, 2011 at 11:13 am

I read the book Tricks by Ellen Hopkins…It scared me to death of ever thinking of going to Vegas. It’s a phenomenal book but it really messed with my head haha! Specially since I’m the type of person who puts myself in the shoes of the character.

  18. jenna on June 2, 2011 at 11:16 am

ohhh what a fun little getaway for you both! 🙂 I hope you have a great day busy gal! ..gosh your laundry is a full time job in it’s self!

  19. Holly @ The Runny Egg on June 2, 2011 at 11:17 am

We saw O at the Bellagio in November and it was amazing! It was our first choice for a show and I’m so glad we got tickets.

We also loved Mesa Grill, and if The Pilot wants a big burger you should go to Burger Bar in Mandalay Bay.

Oh and M&M World was cool too 🙂

  20. Lauren on June 2, 2011 at 11:18 am

I just love LOVE! You must go see Beatles LOVE show @ the Mirage. Best Cirque show in Vegas hands down!

  21. Jessica @ Stylish Stealthy & Healthy on June 2, 2011 at 11:22 am

I love Vegas…my husband proposed in front of the fountains @ the Bellagio 🙂
    Have fun! xo

  22. Cait @ Beyond Bananas on June 2, 2011 at 11:23 am

We saw Jersey Boys.. it was AWESOMe. Here is a tip though.. Don’t buy your show tickets until you get there. They havea number of legit places along the strip that sell them at discounted rates a day or two.. or even the day of the show. I can’t remember what we paid, but It was like 50 bucks a ticket.. and we were in the 8th row!!!

  23. Donna @ Love, Run & Travel on June 2, 2011 at 11:25 am

    I llooovvveee Vegas!
There is an outlet mall called Prim at the nevada/california border about 20 minutes from vegas that is ahmazing!
Watching the fountains at belagio is my all time favourite though 🙂

  24. Allison @ Food For Healing on June 2, 2011 at 11:27 am

bagels rock, i need to find some good ones like that!
i am jealous you are going to Vegas! i wish i could just take off like that! ive never been and would really like to go.

  25. Gina @Running to the Kitchen on June 2, 2011 at 11:30 am

Any cirque show is always amazing. You guys deserve a little getaway!

  26. Jes on June 2, 2011 at 11:34 am

I was in Vegas for work a few months ago and scored a free ticket to The Beatles Love show… It was very, very awesome… I love their music and just the way that the music and dance/acrobatics told a story it was very neat and I would definitely see it again.

  27. Becky on June 2, 2011 at 11:36 am

I live in Vegas, and you have to check out the Cosmopolitan! I work on the strip
and have heard nothing but rave reviews! I think I might have heard that the entire hotel is smokeless, or maybe just all of the rooms? It’s in City Center and just opened a few months ago.

  28. Mo on June 2, 2011 at 11:37 am

How exciting and fun for you guys! I have to ask – you’re relatively new at your job, do you have a difficult time getting days off right away or are they really that wonderful! And the rhubarb recipe – you can substitute to your raw heart’s content! 3 cups diced rhubarb, 3 cups peeled/cored, chopped apple (I used Macintosh), 1/2 cup water, 2 cups sugar or equivalent sweetener of choice (I found 2 cups to be a bit sweet, so you can adjust down), 2 tsps cinnamon – bring up to a boil for 20 minutes until all fruit softens/mushes up – add 2 oz pectin (or thickener of your choice) and boil for 5 minutes longer. Wonderful jam for oatmeal, pancakes or Udi bagels! I made one batch with apples and one batch with strawberries. Happy Thursday! Mo

  29. Julia on June 2, 2011 at 11:38 am

Awww that is so cute you guys are going on a spontaneous vacation! I’m sure it will be so much fun.
5 outifts? That’s a ton of laundry. Good luck getting recertified!

  30. Diana (Soap & Chocolate) on June 2, 2011 at 11:40 am

For your next trip, which is obviously NYC, remember there is a Mesa Grill here too. It’s around the corner from my office, actually. And I might be convinced to crash your meal there. 🙂

My parents were just in Vegas and really enjoyed LOVE, the Beatles Cirque du Soleil show. When I was there, I saw KA, also CDS, and it was fun but I remember liking La Nouba in Orlando better. And apparently I only have CDS suggestions. Ok!

  31. Ashley @ The Vegetable Life on June 2, 2011 at 11:41 am

Ohhh Im so jealous that sounds like sooo much fun! I have never been to vegas but would love to go someday!!!!!!!

  32. Julie (A Case of the Runs) on June 2, 2011 at 11:43 am

Ahhh, I love Vegas! I’m not much of a party-er or drinker, but it’s still fun for me. Last show I saw was Jabbowokeez (sp?)… it was light-hearted, fun, and not expensive!

  33. Val on June 2, 2011 at 11:54 am

Cirque de Soleil show is great!!

  34. Amanda on June 2, 2011 at 11:56 am

I went to Vegas (for the 3rd time, but the first time with my Dad who was footing the bill aka restaurant and show heaven 😉 ;)) & it was shortly after you got back. I remember trying basically all of your suggestions from your trip and none of it disappointed! The one place I didn’t get to try was Canyon Ranch, so next time for sure. I know you’re a fellow salmon lover and I don’t think I remember you mentioning Red Square at Mandalay Bay. They had amazing salmon. My cousin rec’d it from her trip 10 years ago and said to this day it’s memorable to her…and a year later it still is to me!

Have a blast! And eat lots of Mesa Grill for me. Definitely a highlight from our trip.

    xo,
    Amanda

  35. Jessica @ brighteyesandbushytales on June 2, 2011 at 11:57 am

I also saw LOVE (actually twice) and it was the hands down best show I’ve ever seen! Jersey boys is also really really good if you’re feeling a non-cirque show! 🙂

    • Jessica @ brighteyesandbushytales on June 2, 2011 at 12:00 pm

ALSO… how could I forget… I’m not sure if the pilot would go for it, but Frank Marino’s Divas Las Vegas @ Imperial Palace was incredible & hilarious! 🙂 It was also a super cheap ticket.

  36. Lauren @ Sassy Molassy on June 2, 2011 at 11:57 am

Ah, I love Vegas. I know some people hate it, but I love how different it is from every other place. An opportunity to escape the usual routine and do some serious people watching!

  37. Amanda on June 2, 2011 at 11:58 am

Oh and I also vote for Beatles Love. It’s pretty amazing.

  38. Natasha on June 2, 2011 at 11:59 am

I’ve been to Vegas twice, and some stuff has changed since our last visit but I saw Cirque du soleil “O” on my wedding night there and it was fantastic!! Once of my fav places to eat is at the House of Blues. Fabulous food, but ya need a reservation if it’s at a peak time! Have a blast!!! I’m jelous…wish I was going!!

  39. Danielle C. on June 2, 2011 at 12:08 pm

The Mix lounge @ theHotel has the most amazing view…be sure to visit the restroom.

  40. Alex on June 2, 2011 at 12:18 pm

The Beatles Cirque de Sol show was pretty good last time I was there. 🙂

  41. Tricia on June 2, 2011 at 12:20 pm

I just got back from Vegas on Monday! That place is freaking awesome! It was just me and my boyfriend for 4 nights at THE Hotel at Mandalay Bay..it was so great! 🙂 We saw Cirque de Soleil’s “KA” which I would definitely recommend!
Tao had the best chilean sea bass I’ve ever had in my life, and STK Steakhouse at the Cosmopolital was unbelieavable as well, the special was organic grass fed filet, which I was all about! We went to a couple pool parties and a DJ Tiesto concert which was out of this world good.
    Have fun!!!

  42. PaleoGrl on June 2, 2011 at 12:36 pm

I live in Vegas with my own pilot and there are just so many great options for things to do! I absolutely love ALL of the Cirque du Soleil shows. This would be my faves in order of preference: O, Ka, Mystere, Beatles Love, Zumanity – must see and don’t forget to ask for the military discount for the shows, hotels, and pretty much anywhere you go. Fave restaurants: Michael Mina at Bellagio, Mix at Mandalay Bay, Okada at the Wynn, Origin India (off the strip), Olives at Bellagio (great view of the fountains if you can get a seat outside). If you are looking for a delicious brunch, the Wynn’s champagne brunch is the ONLY way to go (but you should probably not eat for like the 2 days prior haha). Fave pool club = Encore Beach Club on Sundays. Also, a little hidden gem is Luv-It Frozen Custard – a little bit off the strip, but it’s worth it for their world famous frozen custard. Have fun!!!

  43. Kimberly on June 2, 2011 at 12:39 pm

Hey Gina! I love love love Vegas as well! My fiancee and I are going to try to go once a year! My grandparents also moved out there in April! We have been to 2 shows and my favorite, and one I would highly recommend, is Zumanity-Cirque Du Soleil — it was AMAZING– Google it!! The other show we saw was Mysteire-Cirque Du Soleil and it was super creepy — I wasn’t a big fan, but the gymnastists were awesome! Hope this helps! 🙂 Oh, and I head Blue Man Group was the bomb!! 🙂

  44. Jean on June 2, 2011 at 12:42 pm

You can add me to the list of “Never been to Vegas” and “See a Cirque show”. Although, I saw Jersey Boys in Chicago and it was good, so I would recommend that, too. So much to see/do, so little time… 🙂

  45. Parita @ myinnershakti on June 2, 2011 at 12:42 pm

La Reve is a beautiful show at the Wynn. I highly recommend it! Love the spontaneity!

  46. Paige @Running Around Normal on June 2, 2011 at 12:44 pm

That’s so awesome! Totally cool you guys were on the same wavelength there:) Have so much fun! I’ve only been once – and we stayed at the Venetian! Loved it:)

I once had a lesbian women instructor make me demonstrate the heimlich for CPR training on her in front of the class. She was wering “mom jeans” and told me I had to find her belly button…which was IN her pants. I’m scarred for life:/

    • Mo on June 2, 2011 at 1:07 pm

I don’t think I’ve ever laughed so hard – you poor thing. What doesn’t kill ya makes ya stronger, right? Thanks for the much needed chuckle.

      Mo

  48. Bekki on June 2, 2011 at 12:49 pm

If you want to get off the strip- rent a jeep for the day and go to Mount Charelston- AWESOME place and great little place to eat on the mountain….you will also see Hoover Dam

  49. Suzanne on June 2, 2011 at 12:55 pm

The stratosphere at the end of the strip has an amazing view (and a starbucks on top- pleasant way to spend a morning before the party starts!). There are also roller coasters and other thrill rides on top. They’re kind of pricy, but if you like roller coasters you really should do them. It’s definitely not an experience you can get at any other amusement park!

  50. Ashley @ Healthy Heroine on June 2, 2011 at 1:05 pm

I went to Vegas for New Years Eve and I’m dying to go back. I definitely didn’t get a chance to do all of the things I wanted to. I’m sensing a vacation in my future… 🙂
