Reader’s Request: Top Protein Powder Uses

Hi friends! How is your day treating ya? Hope it’s been bueno. <3

It’s been BEAUTIFUL here in T-town.

tucson

(Tucson = one of the world’s places where there’s an abundance of palm trees and cactus)

So beautiful in fact, that I had to carve an hour out of the day’s craziness to lay by the pool.

pool

Uhhhmazing.

I got to watch a water workout class while I was there, so technically I was researching to start teaching on Wednesday, too 😉

So I’ve received a few questions about my favorite uses for protein powder and thought it would be fun for a reader’s request post for today:

Hey Gina,

I love your blog! It’s the first thing I check every morning. I bought some Sun Warrior through your OpenSky promo, but wanted to ask you what your favorite uses are for it. I love it in smoothies (and amazeballs!) but any other ideas you might have would be so appreciated.

Keep up the great work!

Julia

I love me some Sun Warrior. It tastes amazing, has fabulous stats and is raw, gluten-free and vegan.

protein

As much as I love it, I think it’s preferable for our bodies to get most of our protein from actual food sources instead of powders all the livelong day. Sometimes I’ll have to remind myself to include real protein instead of only Sun Warrior 😉 That being said, protein powder is excellent for convenience, and also a great way to lower the glycemic index and boost up the nutritional stats of some favorite recipes.

Here are my top 10 all-time fave uses for protein powder:

10.  Smoothies and Protein Ice cream

smoothie

For protein ice cream, make your favorite smoothie with less almond milk and more frozen fruit.

9. Protein Almond Butter Spread

tortilla

Mix 1 scoop protein powder with some milk to thin it out, 1 T almond butter and melted chocolate if you desire

8. Oatmeal, Quinoa and Farina

oats

Adding half a scoop of protein powder to your morning hot cereal is an easy way to give it more staying powder- just make sure to add in more milk or water than usual. I’ll wait until the cereal is almost finished cooking, and then stir in the protein powder, milk and other mix-ins/seasonings

7. Add it to a latte!

latte (2)

This was one of those it-might-be-weird-but-it-might-be-delicious things that ended up being a success. It was surprising how delicious it tasted in a rice milk latte and added a pleasant lil vanilla kick.

6. Protein fluff

fluff

Protein fluff is a quick and easy little snack: 1 scoop protein, 1 T almond butter or nut butter of choice, almond milk to thin it out- place a square of dark chocolate (or 3) in the middle and heat for 30 seconds

5. Power Cookies and other baked goods

cookietaste

I’m torn on this one because if I want a treat, I’ll usually roll with the most unhealthy but delicious type possible. However, if I’m going to be baking and save myself a hefty amount of dough, might as well get a little protein, eh? 🙂

4. Protein pancakes, crepes and waffles

 pancakes

3. B-fast cookie and B-fast cookie dough cereal

bfast cookie

2. Amazeballz

ball

aaaaaaaaand

1. Antique-ing my brother 😉

antique

He would not let me get a picture of his face covered in protein powder for the blog, hahaha.

What are your favorite uses for protein powder?

Need help choosing a protein powder? Check out this reader’s request on finding the best one for you 🙂

Enjoy your night and I’ll see ya in the morning!

Love posts when you give us nifty ideas. =) I think my Tuesday morning cup of joe will fare well with some of the new Vega Sport vanilla I got. Do you use a whole scoop?

    • Fitnessista on April 25, 2011 at 9:36 pm

no, about half a scoop and use a fork to whisk it

  2. Laury @ thefitnessdish on April 25, 2011 at 9:34 pm

LOVE the protein fluff idea. Never saw that one before!! I have a huge bag of Vanilla Sun Warrior, oh and Gina…how I WISH I loved it but I just don’t 🙁 I am a Vega gal. I can use the Sun Warrior in small amounts. EVERYONE seems to love it though. I have had people offer to buy my open bag from me LOL. I am trying, it’s growing on me. Gonna try that fluff…I need a snack now 😉

This is a helpful post; it motivates me to get cranking on finding us a protein powder. We’ve been looking for a while, but all have tasted too gross to commit to. All in good time, I suppose 😉

    • Fitnessista on April 25, 2011 at 9:39 pm

“So beautiful in fact, that I had to carve an hour out of the day’s craziness to lay by the pool.”–
Now that is working and on the job training at it’s finest! 🙂

    Love your top 10!!!
I agree, better to eat protein in real form rather than in powder form. When I was training for my bodybuilding competition a year ago, I ate lots of Sun Warrior in chocolate. I would mix it with my iced coffees. A very nice kick!

I love the trip down memory lane with these posts…protein fluff…thanks for the reminder on that one! And pancakes and of course, BFast Cookie. Have that recipe memorized..don’t need a linky 🙂

  7. Chelsea on April 25, 2011 at 9:40 pm

oh my gosh i loove love my protein powder and all these ideas look delicious! thank you!

  8. Holly @ The Runny Egg on April 25, 2011 at 9:42 pm

  9. Amanda on April 25, 2011 at 9:47 pm

I was wondering about the protein muffin you made in the microwave the other day. How did you do it?

  10. MMiller on April 25, 2011 at 9:58 pm

WOW! Holy protein powder Gina! And here I have used it in smoothies and added it to my yogurt! That’s it!

  11. courtney @ cupcakedynamite on April 25, 2011 at 10:03 pm

ahhh thank you thank you thank you from all of us trying to find our “protein fit” 😉 ! it’s a daunting task and easy to get discouraged 🙂

  12. bonnie on April 25, 2011 at 10:07 pm

i love sun warrior. i use it in shakes, overnight oats and in your recipe for protein pancakes

  13. Jillian on April 25, 2011 at 10:10 pm

I’ve been stalking… I mean following, your blog for awhile. I think I’m ready to try some Sun Warrior 🙂 Have you tried the Natural? I’m worried I won’t like the artificial sweetener taste I’ve heard about in the Vanilla.

    • kt on April 26, 2011 at 12:55 am

The natural is my favorite because it doesn’t taste like anything and it’s really smooth and non-chalky.

      • Fitnessista on April 26, 2011 at 12:01 pm

i haven’t tried the natural, but have heard good things about it

        • Jillian on April 26, 2011 at 10:19 pm

          Thanks!

  14. Megan on April 25, 2011 at 10:24 pm

My fav use for protein powder is in shakes for sure!

  16. Jenny (Fit Girl Foodie) on April 25, 2011 at 10:28 pm

I love using protein powders to make your breakfast cookie! I’ve also made some protein brownies in the microwave and I love adding a scoop to cereal and eating it with milk 😀

  17. Allie J on April 25, 2011 at 10:55 pm

I was wondering if it’s ok to use protein powder even if you don’t work out like a maniac. I’ve heard it can make you gain weight if you’re not working hard enough to use all the protein. Is there any truth to this? Thanks, Gina:) love the blog!

    • Fitnessista on April 26, 2011 at 12:03 pm

protein powder is just like the other macronutrients- eat too much, which translates too too many calories, and you will gain weight. i think as long as you are mindful of your caloric intake, protein powder can be a great supplement.

  18. Ne on April 25, 2011 at 11:01 pm

Ok, I have to ask you this too! What and where about your sunglasses?? They are awesome and look so great on you!!!

    • Fitnessista on April 26, 2011 at 12:02 pm

      whispers: they’re from target. $20 🙂

  19. Hannah on April 25, 2011 at 11:06 pm

Ah I love this roundup of ways to use protein powder! Can’t wait to try them. That last picture is too funny…

  20. Laura @ Backstage Pass on April 25, 2011 at 11:21 pm

YES, the infamous Fitnessista breakfast cookie!!! That’s another great recipe featuring protein powder 🙂
Haha, that’s funny that you antiqued your bro with protein powder. The healthiest prank possible!

  21. mi-an on April 25, 2011 at 11:34 pm

love this post. i use protein powder basically in same uses you do except for the cup of joe…hmmm…may have to try that.

  22. Brooke on April 25, 2011 at 11:40 pm

Wonderful, thank you! I love the coffee idea and REALLY need to try the fluff. I may have to add some powder to my joe tomorrow morning. 😉

  23. Allison @ Food For Healing on April 25, 2011 at 11:44 pm

i have never found a protein powder that i really like and tasted good, so i dont have any protein powder uses of my own.
I would love to try the sunwarrior, but have only seen it on your opensky, and it doesn’t ship to canada. so i’m right out of luck.

  24. Ashley @ Feeding Ashley on April 26, 2011 at 12:07 am

The protein powder I have tastes terrible, but it’s the cheapest I could find. I love mixing it in oatmeal and breakfast cookies.

  25. Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table on April 26, 2011 at 12:19 am

I have to remind myself to get some “real” food protein in too… but I love mixing my vanilla protein powder into chocolate avocado pudding! It adds a sweet vanilla kick and makes it an even more satisfying dessert.

  26. hippierunner on April 26, 2011 at 12:42 am

The last picture is so funny!

  27. kt on April 26, 2011 at 1:00 am

I’m so boring- my Sun Warrior goes in my daily green smoothies and that’s about it. Thanks for all of the ideas!

  28. MC on April 26, 2011 at 1:33 am

Great post! I have to admit I tend to just dump my protein powder in smoothies and leave it at that. Though this is probably because I accidentally purchased a totally ick-tasting powder. Definitely do not recommend Amazing Grass in vanilla. Next time, I should just suck up the price and grab a pack of Sun Warrior.

  29. Cait @ Beyond Bananas on April 26, 2011 at 5:56 am

I’ve always been a protein powder lover and use it in EVERYTHING. I recently bought sun warrior through your open sky promotion and thing it is awesome!

  30. Katherine: Unemployed on April 26, 2011 at 6:12 am

do you still do food combining? and is protein powder okay with nuts?

    • Fitnessista on April 26, 2011 at 12:01 pm

food combining and i have never been friends 🙂 yes, protein powder is ok with nuts.

  31. Colleen @ The Lunchbox Diaries on April 26, 2011 at 6:49 am

I agree with you, I usually like to get protein from real foods, but putting some vanilla powder in my smoothies is so yummy!

  32. Kimberley on April 26, 2011 at 6:58 am

haha TOO cute! I can’t wait to try some of these– I love my protein powder so I like new ways of incorporating it

  33. Katie on April 26, 2011 at 6:59 am

    SunWarrior is the BEST!

I love protein pancakes and have not made them in forever, I need to make a batch and even freeze them to have for emergency breakfast fast!

    xoxo <3

  34. Nikki on April 26, 2011 at 7:52 am

I seriously love reading your blog. I was just thinking to myself this morning “I need something new to do with my protein powder!” THANK YOU! Enjoy your day 🙂

    • Fitnessista on April 26, 2011 at 12:00 pm

      thanks girl- you too!

  35. Trisha on April 26, 2011 at 7:58 am

This is great! I’ve always been sort of against protein powder, just because of all the junk that is in it. I’m definitely all about the real protein sources. But I have heard SO many good things about Sun Warrior. I might have to try it!
    Goodness…that weather looks fabulous!

  36. Leanne (Bride to Mrs.) on April 26, 2011 at 8:18 am

I can’t wait to see the new design for your blog!!

  37. Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin on April 26, 2011 at 8:33 am

I almost never use protein powder because I get so much protein from my diet. But I bought Vega Vanilla Almondilla packet to try in a smoothie once and I loved it!

    • Fitnessista on April 26, 2011 at 11:59 am

omg, i LOVE the almondilla. we don’t have it in tucson though- may have to order some

  38. Kristin (Cook, Bake, Nibble) on April 26, 2011 at 8:46 am

Love this list! I usually use my SW for smoothies, amazeballs and overnight oats- but these are some fab ideas! I love the latte trick. Gotta try that one! 🙂

    xo

  39. The Cream Filling on April 26, 2011 at 8:56 am

Is protein powder necessary in a balanced diet? I eat meat and everything.

    • Fitnessista on April 26, 2011 at 11:59 am

not at all.. it’s just a supplement

  40. kristina@beancakes on April 26, 2011 at 9:34 am

haha! love the last one! thx for doing a post of this, i too love this brand of protein powder.

  41. Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat on April 26, 2011 at 9:36 am

Yum! I love all of these! I usually make a similar version to your protein fluff and it is delicious! I also have it in a green smoothie every morning after I work out. Right now I’m rolling with Promasil by Rivalus, which is one that I discovered about 6 months ago and now I’m hooked!

  42. Dani on April 26, 2011 at 9:51 am

Hahaha so cute that you antiqued your bro

    • Fitnessista on April 26, 2011 at 11:59 am

    Loving that pool!

  45. Jenny @ Fitness Health and Food on April 26, 2011 at 10:50 am

What a great post! I agree with you that it’s best to get protein from actual food sources which is why I no longer buy any.

However, I do love all of your ideas of how to incorporate it in super yummy ways!

    Thanks for sharing! 🙂

  46. Teri [a foodie stays fit] on April 26, 2011 at 11:22 am

Your breakfast cookies are my favorite way to use protein powder. Seriously! I need to try the balls and fluff too! That is such a great idea to add it to a latte! I can’t believe it’s good! 🙂

  47. kate@hautetotsBOS on April 26, 2011 at 11:22 am

OhEmGee..I got the Sun warrior through your Open Sky promo and I’m in may-jah league LOVE with it!! LOVESSSS. I hate the taste of cows milk, and I am SO happy to finally have a protein powder I can get down my throat without gagging. Love your ideas-I’m totally making a breakfast cookie today! I use mine in oatmeal and 4 ingredient protein bars. I also hide it in my kids oats and yogurt 😀 shhh..our little secret

  48. Desi on April 26, 2011 at 11:50 am

I really need to try some of these, thanks for the ideas! I tend to get into food ruts when I find something that I like that works, then I start hating it because I have it every day… variety it’s a good thing.

  49. chelsey @ clean eating chelsey on April 26, 2011 at 12:56 pm

I love protein powder in my oats. I just started doing that a couple weeks ago!

  50. Clare @ Fitting It All In on April 26, 2011 at 2:48 pm

I love protein powder! I use it in my smoothies most often. I have a question about the “scoop” size though. My powder’s scoop is REALLY big…like more than 1/4 cup! Is that the same scoop as yours? could you possibly list the TBSP amount for recipes?

    • Fitnessista on April 26, 2011 at 4:07 pm

my scoop is probably a tablespoon and a half- not super huge
