Some AF Digs

Hey guys! Hope you had a wonderful weekend 😀 My Sunday with the fam was awesome <3

To address some of the comments from yesterday, the only child I’m with is “food child”. No baybays over here, for now. The reason why my diet has been a little “lax” this weekend is because I’m seeing food I haven’t seen in 5 months! So you can bet your booty I’m going to eat some of the delicious Funfetti cake nana made, REAL Mexican food and some ooey gooey cookies whole grain cookies. Since I eat like an angel at least 90% of the time, I figured it was a great opportunity to live it up and have a treat weekend!

The pilot and I had bfast at the madre’s.. she made me some oatmeal topped with strawberries and banana

oats

Then we set out on a treacherous run at Sabino Canyon.

me

The reason I say treacherous is because it was uphill for the first 3.5 miles and we were HUFFING it. The trail kept winding up, and up, and up, and we had to really push ourselves to finish the first half. The original plan was to go for 9 miles, but we ended up doing 7.25 in 1:08. Not too shabby considering the terrain!

We were triumphant 😀

us

On the way back to madre’s, we needed something fresh and tasty to drink, so we grabbed Xoom Juice.

acai

I got the Acai 101 which had apple juice, bananas, strawberries and acai. Pretty amazin’

We checked into the hotel on base and I have to say, I’m pretty impressed with military hotels. For the most part, they’re always clean and safe, and you can’t beat the price—under $40 a night!

We have a little living room:

And powder room:

Not bad at all 🙂

We showered our stinky faces, got ready, came and grabbed the familia and then headed to my great-grandparents house.

On the way there, we had to make a stop at In N Out for the boys…

trev

They enjoyed their burgers and when we got to my great-grandparents, I was surprised by my mom and nana who stopped and got me a glorious vegan meal.

salad

They got me a three bean salad and Greek salad with no cheese, or dressing…and just as they expected, I combined the two and devoured 😀

We had an awesome visit with everyone, and then left to see an amazing Tucson sunset.

Breathtaking, no?

Well we’re going to head back to the hotel, meet up with some friends (?) and then I’m getting up early to take my brother’s girlfriend to her first Bikram class.

See you tomorrow!
xoxo,

What a great trip. Your salad looks delicious 🙂 Congrats on the run! I hate to run uphill….I always try to run where it’s flat 😀 I’m lazy I know.
Thanks for sharing those beautiful Tucson sunset photos!! Really breathtaking 😀

How thoughtful of your familia to get you that incredible salad! I’m excited to hear you might try adding the ‘fu back in. I find that I have a lot more stamina/muscle tone with some soy protein back in my diet.

Enjoy the rest of your trip!!!

  4. Susan on January 11, 2010 at 2:16 am

Enjoy the bikram yoga in the morning, hope your brother’s girlfriend enjoys it. I’ve never tried it myself but I’ve heard it’s in a hot sweaty room.

Fun to read your holiday experience Gina!
Just had to tell you, i got sent a PR pack from Benefit today and it had a perfume in it called Gina! It’s actually called “my place or yours gina” haha i thought of you straight away as you are the only Gina i “know”. It smells so good too and comes in such gorgeous packaging (it unfolds to reveal a very girly house with hot pink stilettos on the stairs).
    Happy holidays xo

  6. MizFit on January 11, 2010 at 5:14 am

    happy bikram’ing!

I laugh that I usually scoff at the bikram because the heat here can feel unrelenting. I need to git to bikram while we are mired in this coooold snap (19 degrees!).

and I need to be…aggressive 🙂 and ask if youd mull doing a guess post for me ever?

    ponder?

    email me 🙂

Your posts always make me so hungry. (I’ve been lurking for a while 😉

Arizona is such a beautiful place. I’ve only been there once (although not to Tucson), and I always remember how gorgeous it was. I really want to go back and soak up some sunshine.

  13. LindsayRuns on January 11, 2010 at 7:40 am

I know, aren’t those hotels great? We’ve got cute little beach condos out here for dirt cheap if you are ever feeling the NC coast! Glad you’re enjoying all the treats of home!

  14. Carolyn on January 11, 2010 at 7:49 am

It’s nice that the military has so many good benefits, hopefully it helps make up for all the sucky parts like not being with your husband as much as you would like.

  15. Paige (Running Around Normal) on January 11, 2010 at 7:53 am

What an awesome trail run! You guys completely rocked it. Switching up the terrain always makes for such a challenge.

That is a lot nicer than the hotel at Ft. Drum. Yours truly got to live there for 6 weeks. A year and a half later and I still don’t want to shack up with the hubs in a hotel! Hehe!

  24. skinnyrunner on January 11, 2010 at 10:14 am

the sunset pictures are gorgeous and you and your hubby look too cute in your running gear.

    Mmm amazing looking oats!

I love how you workout with the hubby. I’m in the process of getting my bf to do some sort of cardio. Maybe someday we’ll run together too 🙂

  29. Alexandra on January 11, 2010 at 11:47 am

That sunset last night was truly amazing, right?! I definitely wished I had my camera – we were driving to my father in laws house to head out to dinner and it just made me smile from ear to ear! Glad to see you’re having such an awesome time with the family!

  30. Jessica on January 11, 2010 at 12:00 pm

yummy, that salad and veggies looks so good! I want to re-create it at home! And you can definitely go off eating healthy a little bit with your family! I think that’s a really healthy thing to do =)

  31. Emily on January 11, 2010 at 12:25 pm

Great job on the run! I’m so glad you’re having a good time with your family. Its always so nice to be home! 🙂

  32. Cass on January 11, 2010 at 12:30 pm

Can you provide the recipe for the whole grain cookies? I have been wanting to bake whole grain cookies but I am always afraid they wont take like real cookies. Thanks!

  33. Erica on January 11, 2010 at 12:41 pm

Yes, GORGEOUS pics! I can see why you love it so much 🙂

Absolutely fantastic run! I would love to go running in different places now and then but I would have to go by myself (no running buddy here 🙁 ) and I’m a major chicken. I’m so glad you have your pilot to join, and guard, you!

I noticed that you signed yourself out as “G$.” LOVE IT!! My name is Gracie, so I have at least 5 guy friends who call me G-money 😛

The run sounds HARD, but so nice that you can do that with your man.

That’s so sweet that your fam gets you food that they know you’ll enjoy!!

  40. Leah on January 11, 2010 at 3:30 pm

Wow, that run sounds so hard! I complain about the hills in my neighborhood, and none of them are more than 1 km!

    That sunset looks amazing!

  41. Diana (Soap & Chocolate) on January 11, 2010 at 4:28 pm

Haha, I was just thinking–I’ve had so many food babies over my lifetime that I might well be considered promiscuous by now. 😉

  42. Alicia on January 11, 2010 at 4:50 pm

Looks like a great time! Tucson is beautiful!

  43. Jenn (eating bender) on January 11, 2010 at 6:08 pm

  45. barbara(Blood, Sweat and Heels) on January 11, 2010 at 7:55 pm

Mmmmm cactus fruit candy. I miss Tuscon!

  46. Leah on January 11, 2010 at 8:15 pm

Live it up sister! Life is meant to be enjoyed (all things in moderation of course). It is obvious you enjoy living fit and part of that is being realistic. It is refreshing to see someone that is living life and enjoying each step! You can’t be perfect in life and one of my favorite parts of understanding this is that I can get some really great laughs out of my imperfect moments! They make for great stories later on anyways!

p.s. isn’t it amazing when people are supportive of your ‘way of life?’ Like the salad. My hubs bought me a ton of my healthy treats for Xmas this year instead of candy and it meant so much to me!

    Enjoy your trip beautiful!

I just LOVE that your family is so incredibly supportive of your food style! They sound so sweet!

Was wondering what running pant you use that are right at the knee like that? Is that something you are willing to share w/ us? I am on the lookout for some new running pants and keep seeing you in yours so thought I’d ask. They look great!

I love getting to go to Tucson vicariously through you! I hope to get to go back again soon and feel the warmth that is Sabino Canyon. The sunsets in Tucson are some of the best we’ve ever seen, especially when the cacti become all aglow in the last light. Must get plotting (and saving!). Glad you had a great break there 🙂
