Speed Eaters Anonymous

Hey friends! How was your day?

Mine was loooooonnnggg (the 5pm weights shift is a doozy) but very bueno 🙂 I tested out the first week’s workout for Summer Shape Up 2011 on my lunch break! Very serious biznazz…

[Side note: that headband was hurting my brain ALL day, but once you commit to a headband, you can’t take it off without your hair looking funny.]

The best part about the day?

This was waiting for me to get home:

Indian!!!

The Pilot got takeout on his way home and it was glorious.

Dal Makhani (lentils)

+ socca!

socca

It’s been wayyyyy too long since I’ve had socca. I kind of got burnt out on it during the detox since I was eating it so often, but I was ready to bring it back in place of naan tonight 🙂

I cooked up the socca in some ghee

ghee

(few things in the world smell as awesome as melting butter)

and ended up sharing half of it with Bella. She LOVED it! I knew she’d go crazy for socca since she’s garbanzo obsessed 😉

socca (2)

As delicious as my meal was, I ate the entire thing in 9 minutes! I am a notorious speed eater. It’s probably because I am always 100% in some kind of hurry, so I stuff my face as quickly as possible, usually while doing 2 or 3 other things and continue the day. It bums me out because I really love food, and at the end of the meal, I realize that I didn’t savor or enjoy it as much as I could have. I think to myself “wow, that was really good. And it’s over already.” On dates with the Pilot, I’m pretty good about slowing down, but on an everyday basis, it’s something I’m going to be more mindful of.

Anyone other speed eaters out there?

Well we’re off to my little bro’s baseball game 😀 It’s a beautiful night.

Enjoy your evening and I’ll see ya tomorrow with a reader’s request!
xoxo

Something to do:

If you make a minimum $10 donation to Caitlin’s neighbor’s cause, please indicate it in your comment below (you can say “I donated” or whatever you’d like) and I’ll be picking someone from the comments on Friday morning (and Caitlin will match it up from the donations for me) to send some macaroons and a Whole Foods goodie package to 🙂

I’m definitely a speed eater – and I am also guilty of eating in front of the TV or doing computer work. I try to slow down, but it’s so hard when the food is good 🙂

  4. MMiller on June 1, 2011 at 10:11 pm

Too funny, I have done that on occasion, but now I am a very slow eater! My husband is definitely a speed eater though…he got it from his Navy days!! He could easily eat 2 platefuls before I could eat half of one! And he does!
I would rather snack a little all day than have 3 big meals! I got in the bad habit of grabbing a handful of cheez-its when I need something, and I have many days that that is a meal! Just meant to take the edge off, but then I am no longer hungry!

Speed Eaters Anonymous is my headquarters. I eat WAY too fast and I need to work on it…but I am always in a rush!!

  6. Juanita on June 1, 2011 at 10:12 pm

OMG I eat so fast its not even funny!!!
I seriously have to like step away from my food and do something else inbetween bites so I don’t just eat it all in one bite. I got the bad habit from wrestling because we had five minutes to eat something before a match. I’ve been getting better though by drinking lots of water while I eat 🙂

  7. Courtney @ The Granola Chronicles on June 1, 2011 at 10:12 pm

I focus really hard on slowing down during dinner. It’s a great time for my husband and I to share our day with each other and catch up. I try to remember to savor things and enjoy each bite.

  8. Holly @ The Runny Egg on June 1, 2011 at 10:14 pm

I am a total speed eater! I am always the first person to be done eating. Friends and coworkers tend to point it out to me. I think growing up with 3 sisters made me eat so quickly — if I didn’t eat what I wanted there might not be anything left!

  9. Felicia (Natural + Balanced) on June 1, 2011 at 10:23 pm

i eat fast too at times, but consciously try to slow myself down when i have the time. i love the smell of coconut butter melting on a french toast/pancake morning, with coffee brewing in the background.. ahh 🙂 the little things!

  10. Samantha on June 1, 2011 at 10:25 pm

I’m definitely a speed eater! I blame growing up with three boys surrounding me & a stepdad who’s also a speed eater…if you don’t eat fast, you don’t eat at all! Then add in that I’m super busy and I kinda just stuff my face. Before I know it, the meal’s over 🙁

    • Fitnessista on June 1, 2011 at 10:28 pm

maybe it’s because i have so many brothers? it’s all starting to make sense now haha

  11. Samantha on June 1, 2011 at 10:26 pm

I didn’t expect to be touched so much by Caitlin’s story. I donated.

      meant Caitlin’s neighbor…oops!

  12. lindsey on June 1, 2011 at 10:27 pm

I’m a recovering speed eater. There are times when the food is so good that I take huge bites and hardly chew before swallowing and it just makes my stomach hurt and I get uncomfortably full. I’ve been taking a lot of steps to be more mindful of my eating and my hunger cues, so I’ve slowed down, but it is still an urge that I have to fight all the time!

  13. Trisha on June 1, 2011 at 10:29 pm

Just in the last few months I have tried to make a point to slow down and just eat while eating. No reading, watching TV, studying. Just eat. and savor it. Because foods is too good not to!

  14. Kate on June 1, 2011 at 10:31 pm

    I donated! *fingers crossed* 🙂

  15. Anna on June 1, 2011 at 10:31 pm

Defs have issues with the whole speed eating/hunger cues…but everyday it gets better!!

I just got some garbanzo bean flour the other day, gonna try my hand at socca soon!!

  16. SaraRM on June 1, 2011 at 10:32 pm

I always eat way too fast during the day, at restaurants I always take it slower.

    I donated.

  17. sarah on June 1, 2011 at 10:36 pm

    hi gina!
when does the summer shape up begin? i started reading your blog last year around this time, and the summer shape up kicked my booty – it was SO FUN. should we find the workouts on the fitness page? also, i think we eat fast (i am SO guilty) because of lunch breaks in high school – seriously, 30 minutes to get food and be back in class? when i’m home, my mom always reminds me that i’m not in a cafeteria and i can eat slooowwly, no one is going to take my food from me 😉 hope the game was fun!

    • Fitnessista on June 1, 2011 at 10:45 pm

      it starts on monday 🙂

  18. mela tircuit on June 1, 2011 at 10:38 pm

Okay I just want to say I laughed out loud when I read the “commit yourself to a headband” . While it is a true statement, I appreciate the patient, tolerable person you appear to be! It’s like an “oh well” attitude. I kinda find it comical. 🙂

  19. Jess@atasteofconfidence on June 1, 2011 at 10:38 pm

my boyfriend eats really fast, and ever since we have started dating— I have sped up too! I really want to work on slowing down:)

  20. Maren on June 1, 2011 at 10:39 pm

I am definitely a speed eater! I used to be the slowest eater ever…not sure what happened! 😉

I donated! I was incredibly moved by the story about Tonya and continue to read all the comments on her page because they are all so kind! I even called my mom and walked her through the steps to donate! She doesn’t really know how to use the internet and she wrote “Good Luck” in the comment box where she donated. ahaha 😉 I can’t believe how great the blogging community is at helping someone, anyone!, in need!

  21. Kristen @ Chocolate Covered Kristen on June 1, 2011 at 10:44 pm

I am a notorious speed eater! My boyfriend is notoriously slow… even after several years I’m done in 5 minutes and it takes him 25. I wish I was a slower eater, I just can’t help myself when good food is in front of me 🙂

  22. Averie (LoveVeggiesandYoga) on June 1, 2011 at 10:45 pm

I am the only person to not yet make socca. I just posted earlier today about beans (chickpeas or others) in desserts….I need to try garbanzo bean flour and make some socca, finally! I am just barely getting around to getting thru all the peanut flour I stockpiled when I found out TJs was going to stop selling it. So dont even have garbz bean flour…yet.

Speed eating..omg, yes! I am the worst but have FORCED myself to SLOW DOWN and enjoy my food rather than wolf it down in a few minutes…better for my brain, my tummy, my overall digestion when I come up for air rather than just inhale it all at once…haha 🙂

  23. Jennifer@Knackfornutrition on June 1, 2011 at 10:45 pm

    I donated.

I speed eat too. I really need to slow down and savor my food. Also, I hate when I regret wearing headbands. The crease they make really sucks. Once you’re in you’re in though.

  24. Kris | iheartwellness.com on June 1, 2011 at 10:53 pm

Oh girl you have no idea how speedy I am with eating my food! You would swear I was raised with a pack of wolves….I rarely get full and I eat like a motha!

    Sometimes I wish I savored more too…..

Can’t wait for the new workouts! Are they bodyweight exercises?

    xxoo

  25. courtney @ cupcakedynamite on June 1, 2011 at 10:53 pm

I speed eat like crazy, unless I’m eating a salad, which I guess is good?! gotta love a man who brings home take out. 😉 he’s a keeper.

  26. Brooke on June 1, 2011 at 10:54 pm

(raises hand) SPEEDEATER HERE! I try to be mindful, but even as I’m sitting here typing this I’m eating…speedily. :\
I’m always finishing before everyone else…except my boyfriend. At least he has an excuse! He was in the military so it was sort of ingrained at the time that he eat and eat FAST.

Glad I’m not the only one. All of us on here should get together and have lunch…though it’d probably be over very quickly. 😉

  27. Nicole on June 1, 2011 at 10:56 pm

I know what you mean about the headbands! They look cute, but are so frustrating sometimes. And I had Indian food for dinner! Woohoo!

  28. Julie on June 1, 2011 at 10:56 pm

I’m totally a speed eater too. I think that I learned it from my 2 older brothers growing up. It’s a bad habit though! I need to slow down to give my stomach time to send the notice to my brain that it’s full!!

  29. The Get In Shape Girl on June 1, 2011 at 10:58 pm

I’m such a speed eater!! Just tonight I was done with my dinner before my boyfriend even sat down to eat his!

  30. Elyse on June 1, 2011 at 10:59 pm

I am so glad you’re bringing attention to Caitlin’s incredible neighbor. I couldn’t imagine starting a family with my love and having the threat of it being taken away from me only a few years later. Her strength is downright awesome. Throwing a party to celebrate life despite her situation?? That rocked my world when I read it. What a lovely woman, inside and out. I donated immediately. I just wish I could afford to give more.

  31. Jess on June 1, 2011 at 10:59 pm

Ugh I’m a super speed eater too. Definitely something i’m trying to work on…..i donated too!

  32. Mac on June 1, 2011 at 10:59 pm

Major speed eater here! My speed eating stems from my youth when my sister and I used to try to finish eating before my dad who is also a notoriously fast eater.

  33. Meagan on June 1, 2011 at 11:01 pm

I donated! So touched by her story and definitely sharing it with my friends and family.

  34. Sana on June 1, 2011 at 11:02 pm

Yeah I like to get my calories in FAST!

  35. kaila @ healthy helper! on June 1, 2011 at 11:09 pm

Oh I am totally a speed eater too! It is SO bad! I need to slow down….I can eat a three course meal in like 5 minutes flat. Food is just so good so I always end up shoveling it in. I really need to work on slowing down and savoring each bite more though.

  36. Sam on June 1, 2011 at 11:10 pm

I always eat way too fast. I have for as long as I can remember. Bad habit! I’m trying to make a conscious effort to slow down and really savor each bite though. I also have a bad habit of multitasking while eating, whether it be watching TV, reading, sitting at the computer, etc. No good!

  37. Dee on June 1, 2011 at 11:12 pm

I am a speed eater too. It’s such a hard habit to break from. I’m trying though.

And oh, Tonya’s story totally made me tear up. I donated whatever I could spare.

  38. Jennie on June 1, 2011 at 11:14 pm

I donated, my heart goes out to her and her family!

I am definitely a speed eater, I sometimes have finished my meal before my husband even sits down to eat! I try to practice mindfully putting my fork down in between bites!

  39. s on June 1, 2011 at 11:23 pm

hahaha! thanks for this post. i am glad i am not the only speed eater out there.

    • s on June 1, 2011 at 11:25 pm

and my boyfriend is a sloooow eater, which makes going out to eat a somewhat painful experience unless i am mindful of my eating speed, take smaller bites, etc.

  40. Alison (Fueling for Fitness) on June 1, 2011 at 11:25 pm

I donated; it’s the least I could do to help Tonya and her family. I recently lost my uncle to cancer… we had about three weeks from the time he was diagnosed until he said goodbye. I’m SO ready to hear about a successful battle against cancer. In all my life, I haven’t been exposed to so much bad news (I know of others that I care deeply about who have been diagnosed with “worst case scenario” cancer) in the span of just a few months.

My dad (it was his brother) loves macaroons, so this post reminds me that I should try to bake some for him to cheer him up when he returns from visiting his family in a couple of weeks.

In lighter news, I also am a terrible speed eater. I’ve been making a serious effort to slow down.

  41. Chelsea @ Go Chelsea Go! on June 1, 2011 at 11:32 pm

I’m also a SUPER speed eater. I’ve been trying to slow it down. But I usually just want to feed the hunger monster!

  42. Emma @ La Vie en Ginger on June 1, 2011 at 11:36 pm

Totally gave an appreciative chuckle when you tweeted the headband thing earlier. THE WORST. I actually have one that gives me such bad headaches that whenever I wear it my friends are like “OH GOD, SHE’S GOT THE HEADBAND ON, GIRD YOUR LOINS” because they know after about two hours my mood will be…how can I say this delicately…less than delightful.

Also feel you on the speed eating. I feel like our generation has been practically trained to eat this way after growing up on 20-minute lunch periods. So sad, because that lack of mindfulness probably contributes to obesity levels almost as much as processed food. Definitely a good habit to break!

    • Fitnessista on June 2, 2011 at 11:04 am

hahah i’m right there with you. it makes me so cranky!

  43. Allison @ Food For Healing on June 1, 2011 at 11:42 pm

i am the slowest eater on the planet. But i just like to chew thoroughly, and if i eat too fast i get sick, so i’ve learned my lesson!

I’m totally a speed eater in those rushing situations – I’ll think, “how did I eat that huge chunk of potato in such a short time!” But since you slow down when you’re with the pilot, I think you’re all good 😉

  46. Moni'sMeals on June 2, 2011 at 12:10 am

haha, Yes, a speed eater over hear too. Doing better but I get wrapped up in the moment too much. Plus I cook all the time so I eat while I cook. 🙂

Oh yeah speedy Gonzales here with food….I agree, I we ate slow we could savor our food..I donated to the fund 🙂
