Superbowl Snacks

Even though it isn’t for a couple of weeks, Superbowl hubbub is already in full swing.

I’ve mentioned this before, but after all of football games I’ve been to in my life, I still don’t really understand it.game2

(My second date with the Pilot was an Arizona homecoming game)

I understand touchdowns and field goals, but start talking about first down, second down, blah blah, you lose me.

I just know when to rattle my keys and cheer… the important stuff, right?

As far as Superbowl goes, I don’t really care about that too much, either. I usually don’t find out who’s playing until that day, and pay attention to the commercials and gabbing with friends more than the actual game.

But snacks…

I definitely pay attention to the snacks 😉

Here are some of my favorite Superbowl-worthy dishes if you’re planning a party or heading to watch the game with friends:

Sweet potato, goat cheese and chives rounds

sweet potatoes

(bake the sweet potato rounds with olive oil, salt and pepper 375 for 20 minutes- top with goat cheese and bake 5 more minutes, top with chives)

Mini caprese stacks

appetizers

(Baby tomatoes seasoned with salt and pepper, cut in half, with 1 basil leaf and a slice of mozzarella)

Articoke dip

dip (2)

(recipe in the cookbook Eat, Drink and Be Vegan)

Tuscan White Bean dip

bean dip

Sweet Potato and Black Bean Chili

chili

Vegan Chocolate Chip cookies

cookies (2)

And now I really want a cookie.

Do you party it up for the Superbowl? Any other football-clueless friends out there?

Hope you have a great day <3

xoxo

Gina

Something to think:

Look, I really don’t want to wax philosophical, but I will say that if you’re alive, you got to flap your arms and legs, you got to jump around a lot, you got to make a lot of noise, because life is the very opposite of death. And therefore, as I see it, if you’re quiet, you’re not living. You’ve got to be noisy, or at least your thoughts should be noisy and colorful and lively.

LOL I’m the same way about football – after all the games I’ve seen, I still don’t understand how it works. Having said that, Remember the Titans and The Blind Side are my 2 fave movies!

    • Jill on January 24, 2012 at 1:14 pm

Oh my god, I’m the same. I LOVE Remember the Titans!!

  2. Lyndzie on January 24, 2012 at 10:47 am

I feel the same about football, I really know nothing about it & I have actually never even watched the superbowl but I would this year just so I can make those delish looking snacks!

  3. HRCK the Herald on January 24, 2012 at 10:49 am

I’m only into football if it’s a fun event– I randomly got first row seats at a Patriots game this fall, and being so close was really exciting. But football on TV? Not that interested.

The snacks are more my jam, as well:) The best day for dips EVER. 🙂

  4. Rachel on January 24, 2012 at 10:57 am

I’ve finally gotten to where I actually understand football; but only in that I know what downs are, and I know why they go for field goals sometimes instead of touchdowns. The more I learn about it, the more fun it is to watch.

Our Superbowl party is always themed on the host city. But Indianapolis doesn’t have a lot of “stereotype” foods, so we might stick to football-shaped sandwiches and a stadium cake!

    • Amy M on January 24, 2012 at 10:00 pm

Yea, I am finally understanding it pretty well. I just get so anxious in close games.. LOL…

  5. Nicole P on January 24, 2012 at 10:58 am

I was the same way until I married a football player. My husband played in college and so after years of disliking football I finally decided if I understood it then I would enjoy it. So I made him teach me and now I love it. The downs are easy- each team gets 4 downs (tries). A first down is 10 yards. So all teams start a drive at 1st and 10. If they move the ball say 5 yards on the first play then the down becomes 2nd and 5 (2nd try and 5 yards to go) bc they have 5 yards to go to get another 1st down. If for some reason they play 3 downs and don’t get another 1st down then they will either try for a field goal if they are close enough or they will punt the ball back to the other team. So the goal is to move the ball 10 yards each time to get a first down each time until you get to the goal line and touchdown.
If you made it that far lol and I am still talking Chinese just know that downs are just a way to mark when and how long teams have possession of the ball.
By the way- that food looks scrumptious!!

Im actually a football nut who understands the game and practically lives for it…but the snacks are always a good second! Love the idea of the sweet potato and goat cheese rounds. I’m doing something similar later in the week with a freshly roasted beet.

  7. Sarah on January 24, 2012 at 11:32 am

I grew up in Western PA (Steeler Nation + we produce more quarterbacks than any other area) so I know football, was raised around it, and love cheering my team. Since the steelers aren’t in it-and I don’t care for the Giants or the Patriots, I probably won’t even watch the game. But there are still the commercials and goodies! I’m personally partial to chips and salsa.

  8. Brittany @Little b's healthy habits on January 24, 2012 at 11:43 am

Awesome ideas! Not sure where we are watching yet, but if it’s at home I’m definitely going to try some of these out! Thanks! 🙂

  9. Sonia the Mexigarian on January 24, 2012 at 11:47 am

so not watching the Superbowl this year. I really dislike the NY Giants and they barely beat my hometeam 49ners. :\ I don’t care about the Patriots but will be rooting for them to cream the heck out of NYG.

I didn’t know much about football, still don’t, took me a while to understand the 1st and 10 stuff, but am learning the more I hang out with Hubby and his friends.

  10. Cat @Breakfast to Bed on January 24, 2012 at 11:59 am

I LOVE tuscan white bean dip. On EVERYTHING. It’s like hummus’s more exotic cousin. Or if you took hummus to the jersey shore, it met up with some guidos, and they had an AWESOME baby that thought ed hardy should be illegal.

  11. Emily on January 24, 2012 at 12:00 pm

Ha, the little I know of football comes from the high school cheers the cheerleaders subjected us to … “First and 10, do it again! Move that ball!”

I’m bummed the Niners didn’t make it, but I’ll root for the Patriots simply because they were in that Family Guy episode when Peter plays for them and gets in an argument with Tom Brady. This is how I decide on which side to root for … well, this or which team has the better uniform colors, if there are no Family Guy references to be had.

  12. Erin on January 24, 2012 at 12:12 pm

Football made easy (from a girl who loves it): Each team has 3 tries (well, technically 4 but rarely will a team take a fourth down for reasons I won’t explain here) to move the ball 10 yards. If after 3 tries you haven’t moved the ball 10 yards, the other team gets it.

Pretty simple! 🙂 (Hope that helps to enjoy the game a bit more).

  13. Donna Boudreau on January 24, 2012 at 12:13 pm

I will watching the Superbowl only because my home team, The Patriots, are playing. If they weren’t playing I could care less. I understand most of the game, but not all. I get pretty lost when they throw flags on the field.

  14. Kelly @ Laughter, Strength, and Food on January 24, 2012 at 12:22 pm

The Superbowl is a pretty big deal around here. I come from a family that loves football…even all of the women! I think my mom and I scream and yell more than the guys!

Love all of the snacks! 🙂

  15. This Fit Chick on January 24, 2012 at 12:22 pm

:LOVE the dip! I won’t watch the Super Bowl since I really don’t follow american football! Not too big here in the UK 🙂

  16. Kaila @healthyhelperblog! on January 24, 2012 at 12:24 pm

LOVE the mini capreses!!! Such a good idea! I love caprese salads at parties but they are so hard to serve. Those make them single serve and so easy!!

  17. aj on January 24, 2012 at 12:25 pm

Me too! Last year, my girlfriends and I had an un-Superbowl party where we watched Jane Austen movies, and ate yummy stuff. Everything good, without all the yelling : )

  18. Natalie on January 24, 2012 at 12:33 pm

I live in Indianapolis, so that’s the only reason why I even know where Super Bowl is this year 🙂 totally don’t understand it either! But, we are planning to partake in festivities downtown and hopefully scope out some celebs!

  19. Emily @ Glitz Glam Granola on January 24, 2012 at 12:34 pm

I know nothing about football– seriously NOTHING! My college didn’t have a football team so I never really went to game and now I just don’t really care to know anything about it. But I am interested in the snacks as well! Those sweet potato rounds look fabulous!! I think I need to try those!

  20. RachelG on January 24, 2012 at 12:34 pm

Ah, I am 512% making those sweet potato rounds!! 🙂

  21. paulie on January 24, 2012 at 12:34 pm

I really really like your ideas! but i really like that your Artichoke dip isnt all mayo-ed out.

  22. Mo on January 24, 2012 at 12:37 pm

I am a football lover as well. The only problem is I can’t watch my team play when children are present – I swear at the tv like a sailor!

  23. Christine Krupin on January 24, 2012 at 12:41 pm

Gina, I love your blog! We must think alike because I posted a really similar post about football food (my favorite part of football) yesterday! I also have no clue what goes on in most games, despite going to a football-oriented college. Glad to know I’m not the only one out there who’s just in it for the snacks 🙂 http://epicureanbliss.com/2012/01/23/superb-superbowl-sliders/

  24. Anna @ The Guiltless Life on January 24, 2012 at 12:45 pm

I’m completely football clueless – though watching Friday Night Lights helped my understanding a bit! But I’m not American so that’s my excuse ;).

That artichoke dip looks heavenly. As does that cookie…mmm…

  25. Steffany on January 24, 2012 at 12:45 pm

I used to be EXACTLY the same way when it came to football, despite my best efforts to get into it. I think last year, when a kid I went to high school with’s team went to the SuperBowl that’s when I really started to learn/pay more attention, and now, for the most part, I love watching it ! Even though my team SUCKS (but, hey, they started off good this year …)

  26. Cyndi on January 24, 2012 at 12:49 pm

Love the Mel Brooks quote, I was glad he added my thoughts could be noisy, colorful, and lively. Someone in the family has to be the quiet one – I live with 2 very loud, noisy ones that I adore and keep my life bumpin’ + a couple dogs (including a sweet maltipoo) and 2 quiet cats. My solace is the long road and my tennis shoes, and the lively world.

  27. Laura @ She Eats Well on January 24, 2012 at 12:49 pm

I only pay attention to the commercials and half time show. And the food and friends is the absolute best part! I would like a cookie now too, please.

  28. Emily on January 24, 2012 at 12:50 pm

I am making sweet potato and black bean chili (with chicken) for dinner tomorrow night. I can’t wait to eat it!

  29. Chelsa on January 24, 2012 at 1:15 pm

I don’t know a thing about football and only watch the superbowl if I’m with someone who watches football. Thankfully my fiance doesn’t care for watching sports!

Those sweet potato rounds look so good. I think these will make an appearance in my Kitchen soon 🙂

  30. Jill on January 24, 2012 at 1:16 pm

Snacks are always my favourite part of any event, so I hear ya.

  31. Jess on January 24, 2012 at 1:17 pm

Haha I’m pretty clueless about football too. I haven’t been to a Super Bowl party in ages, but since New York and Boston are playing this year, I’m sure many of my friends in both cities will be hosting.

  32. Cynthia on January 24, 2012 at 1:25 pm

Those sweet potato/goat cheese bakes look amazing.

I’m gotten a little fanatical on the goat cheese front lately, I must admit. Have you tried it mixed in with tomato+basil soup? YUM!

  33. Shannon on January 24, 2012 at 1:33 pm

I’m so bummed there’s no love for the Giants in these comments! As a NJ gal I must step up and say GO NY GIANTS!! 🙂

I love the snack options you’ve listed Gina – they sound delicious and aren’t toooo sinful 🙂 I don’t have the Eat, Drink & Be Vegan cookbook – anyway you’d be willing to send me that artichoke dip recipe?

  34. Destini on January 24, 2012 at 1:50 pm

Football is HUGE in my household! hehe I love having superbowl parties. My fav part. And i love tricking all my manly football friends with healthy snacks. <3 best ever!

  35. Kelly @ Vegolosophy on January 24, 2012 at 1:56 pm

Making snacks and food are my favorite part of the bowl too!! 🙂 I love making a whole spread and watching the commercials lol..the game, eh, not so much 🙂

  36. Steph @ Pennies on Sidewalk on January 24, 2012 at 2:00 pm

Sometimes I think it can be even harder to be the chick who is crazy into football – all the dudes look at you like, “who do you think YOU are??” 😛 Snacks look delicious, I might have to spring for the sweet potatoes with chive topping! Thanks for the suggestions (and for making us all hungry!)

  37. Kristen on January 24, 2012 at 2:00 pm

I LOVE football! I have an older brother who I followed around as a child, so I was quite the tomboy. Anyway – love the sweet potato rounds idea! Those just might make an appearance here! Thanks Gina! 🙂

  38. Krystle {Fierce|Fabulous|Fit} on January 24, 2012 at 2:18 pm

I’m definitely going to have to make the mini caprese!! Thanks so much!! 🙂

  39. Jenny@HealthyMOChick on January 24, 2012 at 2:32 pm

I’m a St. Louis girl, we don’t party for SuperBowl. We party for the World Series 🙂

  40. Life's a Bowl on January 24, 2012 at 2:36 pm

All of those dishes look delic- wanna cater our not-yet-planned party?! 😛

  41. Michelle (Better with Berries) on January 24, 2012 at 2:45 pm

Yum!! Those all look so good – especially the sweet potatoes with the goat cheese and chives. Like you, I really just like the superbowl for the food 🙂

  42. Krista on January 24, 2012 at 2:48 pm

I grew up watching football, then married my husband who works in sports & is a football nut, so yeah, it’s pretty much in our life year round! But I love it & understand it, we like to call it out hobby! Some couples ski together or bowl together, we watch football! But I am sad this year because my beloved Niners lost last weekend 🙁 Don’t know who I’ll root for, but I definitely will be eating lots of Superbowl snacks!

  43. Anita on January 24, 2012 at 2:59 pm

I’m with ya! And I was a cheerleader– I feel like that makes it even worse! 🙂

  44. natalie @ southern fit foodie on January 24, 2012 at 2:59 pm

I LOVE football – and I’m all over the game. Sometimes I’m worse than the guys…or at least equally as involved in the game.

However, I think the friends, food, and commercials are just as big a part of it!!! I can’t wait to make some healthy and delicious superbowl foods!

  45. Avery on January 24, 2012 at 3:06 pm

I love that you’re totally ok with being clueless about football. I’m the same way! My University is a HUGE football school, and I’m totally NOT on the cool kids’ football train. This is my senior year and my fiance and I skipped every single football game and found something creative to go out and do on football Saturdays. It was so much fun! I’m thankful to have a (future) hubby who doesn’t care for it much either.. he used to play as a college freshman and now just lost interest for it. The food is the best part! 🙂

  46. Roselyn @ A Balanced Fit on January 24, 2012 at 3:08 pm

I’m totally clueless when it comes to football and the Superbowl too. I don’t even try to pretend to care. 🙂 Love all the food ideas!! And LOVE the baby capreses! Gonna try that one out!

  47. Deanna on January 24, 2012 at 3:11 pm

I like football because I love watching guys in tight pants. And I have a type. And that type is football player. I have no idea how the game is played, because like you, I am in it for the food.

  48. Kilee on January 24, 2012 at 3:25 pm

I agree- snacks are more important than the game itself. I really like baked chicken wings and lots of veggies with different dips.

  49. Corrie Anne on January 24, 2012 at 3:31 pm

Oh NOT a clue about football. But who doesn’t love the snacks??! I made Kevin snacks for that game the Broncos lost. Isn’t that great That I knew they lost even? 🙂

  50. Kaitlyn @ Keeping up with Kaitlyn on January 24, 2012 at 3:33 pm

I feel the exact same way about football too! All of those snacks look delicious!!
