Tabata-style Barre Workout Video {video}

Whaaaaaaaat.

Happy Tabata Thursday, friends! Remember the good ol’ days when I used to post a Tabata workout on Thursday mornings? (And, you know, actually update my YouTube channel every so often.) Well, I’m back in video action. It felt so good to set up the tripod and film a couple of new workouts to share!

This first one combines two of my favorite thing: barre and Tabata!

And yes, they can actually go together in a super sweaty combo.

What is Tabata?

To be totally honest, some of the “Tabata” workouts out there aren’t true Tabatas. The key is to really push yourself, and elevate your heart rate as quickly as possible. Otherwise, those 20 seconds will fly by and you won’t receive the benefits. So sorry, biceps curls aren’t going to do the trick. This is why many true Tabata workouts will involve powerful speed drills and plyometrics. You want to make every second count!

If you’re unfamiliar with Tabata, here is a post with all of the details! The basic rundown is that you’ll work as hard as you can for 20 seconds, rest for 10 seconds, and complete 8 rounds for 4 minutes total. It’s an advanced style of training, for those who are already comfortable with steady state workouts, intense intervals, and do not have any health contraindications. As always, talk with a doctor before making any fitness changes and honor your body. Modify as needed.

Tabata-Style Barre Workout

And with that, here it is!

Tabata Style Barre workout with video

Just because we’re working hard doesn’t mean that you have to JUMP. You can get your heart rate up without the impact! I share some modifications to decrease the impact in the video below.

I didn’t include any music, because YouTube always blocked it, and because after I go through the exercises, you can crank your own music. Just listen for the beeps that will tell you when to start and rest.

Will you follow along with me?? It only takes 4 minutes.
You can complete this workout up to 3 times total. For a full workout, combine it with this Strength workout, lower body burner, and plank burner.

(Wearing: Zella Live-in Leggings, Lorna Jane tank)

Let me know how it goes!

Any video workouts you’d like to see in the future??

Have a wonderful day!

xoxo

I love that you showed the modification. Not everyone is able to jump and run and that is the #1 reason why I get frustrated with classes and group formats. It’s just easier to do my own thing. I see a lot of older women who feel the same. You don’t realize it though until you’re in a position of having physical limitations.

I’m excited to give this a go tonight! Can you recommend a song to put with it??

    • Fitnessista on August 11, 2016 at 5:26 pm

hmmm… “work from home” tabata remix is awesome, and i love “move your body” by sia for sprints but not sure how the verses would match with the intervals.

I am soo curious to try Barre and Orange theory when I get to SD. Point me in the right direction of which studio is better in SD. Esp Orange theory..

I started going to a bootcamp studio here this week. MAN what a workout. Havent done that since before my last pregnancy. Its pretty intense. but not a lot of “jumping” . I love a good workout challenge.

I really loved it when you had videos to go along with one of the Shape Up series – that was so nice to be able to follow along with you, and I was really motivated to do the workouts. I know you’ve been in recovery mode for awhile (glad you’re past most of that now!!) and working hard on lots of other things like PBB, but I’m hoping that maybe for the next Shape Up you might be able to do videos – that was so nice! I’m going to do this barre tabata workout when I get home from work this afternoon – can’t wait, but I know I’ll be shaking like crazy!

    • Fitnessista on August 11, 2016 at 5:30 pm

yes, i am definitely planning on doing it for winter! i wish i could have done it for summer but couldn’t find a reasonable videographer in SD. we’re going to fly my usual videographer/editor out for the winter videos 🙂
please let me know what you think of the tabata!

      • Stephanie B. on August 15, 2016 at 3:56 pm

Oh yay, that would be awesome!! Can’t wait! I just did the tabata (finally… the power went out right after I got home when I was planning to do it last week, of course, and I just now got to it!). I really liked it and it definitely got my heart rate up. I liked that it was a barre-themed tabata – that was new to me! Then I did the strength workout you linked to above – whew, my legs were shaking like crazy. Turned them to jelly! That was a great video, too (and I’m so impressed you did that while pregnant). Thank you!

Happy Tabata Thursday! I remember those days, and frequently still add Tabata Thursday videos on as workout “desserts”. This one was another great one, thanks! 🙂

so happy you liked it! xoxo

Great video…getting flashbacks from your class…! Def more videos please…resistance band loop exercises (booty burner & legs) and any other fun plyometric workouts you can do at home!

Hi Gina! Great video. Quick question: how do you film yourself (i.e. do you have someone help you? Do you use a tripod? Do you use a video camera?). Would also love to know how you get your sound so loud and clear–do you use a mic? Trying to create some of my own videos and would love any advice you’re willing to share. Thank yo!

    • Fitnessista on August 12, 2016 at 8:01 pm

i use a tripod and no mic. (i’m looking for a mic set so i can film outdoors but need to figure out how to sync and use it. i’m clueless about this stuff haha)
for filming, i use my canon T5 dslr.
      xoxo

I’m glad to see a new video! I’ll give it a try. My schedule has completely changed and my workouts are all out of whack, so this and your “two weeks of workouts” emails are great motivation to try to get back on track!

  16. Jennifer on August 13, 2016 at 1:52 pm

Glad you didn’t bother with music! There is a great prenatal barre workout but I hate actually doing it because the instructor uses tacky music (that I guess has an open license so it stays up) So I usually put the sound low and listen to my own music- but then hardly hear her say the instructions.

Love the jump squats added in a tabata routine! They’re tough but goodies! Any other extremely high intensity exercises? We’ve tried burpees, but you can only do so many in 20 seconds since its a long compound exercise. Seems like a more compact exercise than burpees is ideal, right?

  18. Gina H. on August 14, 2016 at 6:33 pm

I was JUST THINKING about how you used to post videos more often. Haha! Glad they’re back!

  19. Anisah on August 17, 2016 at 6:55 am

Woohoo I loved this. I was planning on saving it till after birth but I figured I would give it a go. It was perfect. At almost 20 weeks pregnant I’m proud of myself for getting through it though admittedly it’s easier than what I’m usually used to(maybe that’s why I managed all three rounds). I was surprised that the plie squat jumps ended up being harder than the burpees. Maybe because you can only do so many burpees in 20 seconds but do way more squat jumps. Anyway thank you, I loved it.
