Taters and applesauce

The Pilot came home early from work today!

Liv and dad

He had to fly balls early so he was finished with the day earlier. I was grateful because I forgot to switch the carseat base from his SUV back to my car, so Liv and I just chilled at home with Bell today. Lots of songs were sung, books were read, snuggling was had,

we enjoyed lunch and watching Bell on the patio

Wrap

(turkey wrap with kale, cranberries, and Goddess dressing)

but needless to say, I was excited for a two-sided conversation when he got home.

I made a quick run to TJs for this week’s groceries:

Groceries

The fun stuff:

my car snack on the ride home

Popcorn

Tahini sauce (not sure what I have in store for this yet- any ideas??)

Tahini sauce

Organic kale (finallllyyyyyyyyyy!)

Kale

Coconut water for the days I teach: (was feeling adventurous with the chocolate flavor. Could be amazing or disgusting.. there’s no middle ground)

Coconut water

and these chocolate-covered bananas. I tried a couple and while I love the idea and fact that there’s nothing weird in there, I can’t help but wonder how brown and smushy the bananas are that get sliced and covered in chocolate. The insides were much mushier than I imagined.

Bananas

Wen I got back home, I started to prep some stuff for the week, and also made some things for Livi.

Applesauce 3

I’m really enjoying making her food so far (I say “so far” but it’s been a week, haha). It takes about 10 minutes of active prep time and I’ll freeze half of whatever I make. This week, she has veggies in the freezer from last week ready to go, plus sweet potato

Sweet potatoes

(one each for me, the Pilot, Bella and Livi)

oats (just ground up some of my oats – ready to boil and cool)

Oats 3

and her first taste of “dessert”: steamed apples, pureed with a little cinnamon.

Applesauce

Worlds were changed tonight, friends.

Applesauce 2

I couldn’t shovel the spoon into her mouth fast enough- she kept grunting and reaching for my hand. The only other food she’s done that with so far: avocado. She’s crazy about it. Definitely our daughter. The Pilot and I will teach her to love what we call “the three great A’s”: artichoke, asparagus and avocado.

Thank you so much to those of you who checked in this morning with the Week 2 workout! Word on the street is that it was a doozy, but you know what they say: no hurt, no miniskirt 😉 As your revenge, I’ll do the workout when I hit up the gym tonight and will be sweating and cursing along with ya. Don’t forget about the bedtime ab burner, too!

Off to finish dinner and then gym it up.

Enjoy your night!

xoxo

I work as a director at a daycare and our kids LOVE applesauce. I will totally be making my own organically when I have a babe, but those kids can’t get enough of it. That and peaches! Yum!

Chocolate coconut water tastes like light chocolate milk. So delicious!

    • Mary Kate on June 19, 2012 at 1:10 am

I totally agree! I was wary, as well, but I love it!

    • Erica on June 19, 2012 at 8:20 am

Yes, it is SO good! And it’s my favorite of all the coconut water flavors!

  3. Sana on June 18, 2012 at 10:53 pm

    Even adults love applesauce!

  4. Jessica on June 18, 2012 at 10:58 pm

OMG, how come my wraps never look as delicious as yours and other ones I see on blogs? What is the trick?
Next time you feed her applesauce, videotape it for your Livi fans 🙂

  5. Heather on June 18, 2012 at 11:01 pm

I love tahini! There’s a really yummy recipe on Wholeliving.com called fresh fruit with applesauce sweetened tahini. The fruit sauce tastes AMAZING!

  6. Natasa on June 18, 2012 at 11:02 pm

Hi Gina, you can use tahini to make hummus. It is amazing, but am warning you, super addicting! 🙂 Or you can even use it to make salad dressing 🙂 I am blessed with an amazing husband who keeps experimenting with food and dishes, and he uses tahina a lot, in all kinds of combinations 🙂

I’m on a total popcorn kick lately and now you have me wanting to make a TJ’s run!

  10. Laury on June 18, 2012 at 11:06 pm

Ella still loved applesauce. I still make everything for her and have gotten really creative in the kitchen with it. I’m loving all of the super foods she eats every day and it feels great to say at almost 14 months she really doesn’t eat any packaged foods at all!

I’m excited TJ’s got organic kale too!

I think I heard that that Zico chocolate has shady ingredients though…not sure how I feel about the chocolate coconut water. You will be the guinea pig for us 😉

Liv is getting cuter every day, Gina!

    • Fitnessista on June 18, 2012 at 11:16 pm

haha oh god. i figured because it’s zico, i didn’t need to check the ingredients. i’ll definitely be the guinea pig 😉
that is so cool to hear you still make everything for ella! i hope to do the same
      xoxo

aw thats such a cute pic of Livi and The Pilot! And yay for pureed apples! Lucky little lady! Thanks for sharing!

  14. Colette on June 18, 2012 at 11:19 pm

I’m sure you’ve already heard/read this, but when I was making baby food for my girls, I would prep a big batch, put some in the fridge and the rest I would freeze in ice cube trays. Then transfer the food-cubes to ziplock bags and have a bunch of portioned baby food ready to go. I could easily mix foods/flavors and it reheated easily in the microwave.

  15. Angela on June 18, 2012 at 11:21 pm

Liv is so adorable! She looks so happy to her daddy!

  16. Natalie @ FreshLifeFindings on June 18, 2012 at 11:31 pm

About to do the bed time ab burner! Also I can’t wait to make baby food for my baby one day 🙂 I love that you do that! I always used to want to be like Diane Keaton in Baby Boom and make my own applesauce line 😉

  17. Amber on June 18, 2012 at 11:37 pm

What kind of wrap is that?? Looks great! Did you sauté the kale ?

    • Fitnessista on June 19, 2012 at 12:41 am

      brown rice tortilla
      nope, kept it raw

I love that Bella gets her own sweet potato. 🙂

  19. Caitlin on June 19, 2012 at 12:07 am

Chocolate coconut water is the best – tastes like a healthier version of milk leftover from cocoa puffs 🙂

  20. Shelley on June 19, 2012 at 1:04 am

I did the steady state today – didn’t have the time/wherewithal to go for Workout #2, but it looks super tough! I will def do tomorrow.

  21. Mandy M on June 19, 2012 at 1:22 am

Agree with the others, chocolate zico is great, but there is a lot of sugar in there.
I would love if my TJs starts carrying lactino kale!
Tahini sauce is good as a salad dressing, dip for veggies, or sandwiches.
Hey, would love if you could get around to getting a favorite TJs post up someday. Always interested in knowing what others are buying.
About to hit that ab burner.

  22. Averie @ Averie Cooks on June 19, 2012 at 1:27 am

Ive almost bought that popcorn but passed (b/c I would inhale the bag in a sitting!) and that’s cute that she inhaled her “dessert”. It’s amazing what gets them super excited, isn’t it!

  23. Eucalya on June 19, 2012 at 5:19 am

this morning when i woke up i just felt that yesterday i did workout 2 + bedtime ab burner but as you say, “no hurt, no miniskirt” 😉 i’m gonna think about it everytime i workout! Very cute Liv, as always! Gonna eat some wraps for lunch too, can’t wait! 🙂

  24. Kayla on June 19, 2012 at 5:23 am

I love that you’re making Livi all her own food: so silly additives or fake ingredients; just pure food. I love it, and she definitely is your daughter for loving avocados 🙂

  25. Jess on June 19, 2012 at 5:38 am

I still love making my girls food and they’re 19 months. They eat what I eat, which definitely helps me to eat “clean” most of the time. They will eat everything from lentils to ‘cado’. My mother in
Law made them microwave fried rice with ham bleh! They picked out all the peas to eat and left everything else! You are so good giving her fresh, healthy and home made from the get go!

  26. Racheal @ Running with Racheal on June 19, 2012 at 6:33 am

I make Eat, Live, Run’s favorite salad with the tahini sauce. It changed my life. You must try it!

  27. Sara@Nik Naks and Noms on June 19, 2012 at 7:30 am

Love those baby food containers! We “make” our bebe’s food too but we’re doing baby led weaning so no pureeing necessary. She loves the 3 A’s! She constantly wants to steal my asparagus tips!

  28. Danielle@cleanfoodcreativefitness on June 19, 2012 at 7:37 am

Every time there’s a picture of Livi, I think it’s the cutest picture ever! You must be such proud parents 🙂 The chocolate Zico is delicious! It almost tastes like chocolate milk!

  29. Janiek @ A non-perfect girl on June 19, 2012 at 7:39 am

Is olivia’s hair getting lighter or is it just me?!

  30. Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin on June 19, 2012 at 7:48 am

That tahini sauce would taste good in a massaged kale salad!

That applesauce you made for Liv sounds good – I bet it’s so cute watching her gobble up her favourite foods. 🙂

  31. Lauren on June 19, 2012 at 8:27 am

I’ve heard the chocolate coconut water is very good… still freaks me out so I will stick to regular.

  32. Jamie on June 19, 2012 at 8:33 am

Did you like the herb popcorn? I saw it yesterday near the checkout counter and was VERY tempted!!

  33. Stephanie on June 19, 2012 at 9:19 am

It is my first time leaving a comment, I love your blog! Random question, can you do a post on how you curl your hair like in the above picture? It looks great!

  34. Lena @Fit on the Rocks on June 19, 2012 at 9:37 am

The chocolate Zico is actually my favorite one! I think the mango one kind of tastes really weird, but the chocolate one is rather tasty. Hopefully you like it!

  35. Erin @ Girl Gone Veggie on June 19, 2012 at 9:41 am

Livi is too cute!! And that list of useful college majors made me laugh! How true! ;p

  36. Jodi on June 19, 2012 at 9:43 am

I love using tahini to make sesame greens… inspired by a Whole Foods recipe (online!). I usually wilt a whole bag of TJ’s chopped kale in 2 tbsp water, then when they are done, I mix in a sesame sauce: 2 tbsp water, 2 tbsp lemon juice, 2 tbsp tahini, 1 garlic clove. It is AMAZING and so easy and quick!

P.S. That is the cutest photo ever of Livi and the Pilot :o)

  37. Alex @ Healthy Life Happy Wife on June 19, 2012 at 9:54 am

The chocolate coconut water is my absolute favorite!! I think you will love it!! I always make everyone I’m with try it because it is delicious!

  38. Victoria @ The Pursuit of Hippieness on June 19, 2012 at 10:03 am

You can make an AMAZING carrot ginger dressing with that tahini! Google it… it’s so yummy!

  39. Laura is Undeterrable on June 19, 2012 at 10:18 am

That Chocolate Zico will change your life. It freaked me out at first, but it is like chocolate milk, but doesn’t have that heavy feeling. I drink it straight or use it in smoothies.

  40. Nicole M. on June 19, 2012 at 10:24 am

Chocolate Zico is heavenly! I’m a coconut water addict, and that one is by far my favorite!

  41. Jessica on June 19, 2012 at 10:40 am

You will LOVE the chocolate coconut water! It seriously tastes like actual chocolate milk to me. Enjoy! 🙂

  42. Lauren T on June 19, 2012 at 10:51 am

That article you posted was great! If only universities would replace gen-eds with those type of classes, all college graduates would be set! Although, what would I do without the knowledge I gained from my Age of the Dinosaurs class?! Haha.

  45. Julie on June 19, 2012 at 12:28 pm

Be careful with the cinnamon apples. We go apple picking every fall in North Carolina, and my sister got a ton of them in 2010 to peel, slice, turn into applesauce in the slow cooker. She added 1 stick of cinnamon to the apples, to season it as it turned to mush.

Fast forward to a day later. Little M LOVED IT, but then the following days, she had a horrible red puffy rash in her diaper area. As soon as I saw it, I told my sister it looked like a burn/irritation from something. After quizzing her, she told me about the Cinnamon. Cassia oil is a dermal and mucous membrane irritant, it was probably more acute for her because she used the unground cassia bark which would hold more volatile oils that maybe the ground powder, but just in case you notice any funny business after cassia/cinnamon consumption, it might be that.

    • Fitnessista on June 19, 2012 at 2:21 pm

      wow, good to know!
i just used the powder and maybe 1 sprinkle? not even a measurable amount, so hopefully it won’t bother her.

  46. Erica @ Love the Leap on June 19, 2012 at 12:32 pm

Question: how do you get your brown rice wrap to NOT tear apart when you roll it up?? For some reason I can never get mine to stay together!

    • Fitnessista on June 19, 2012 at 2:18 pm

i keep them in the freezer, chisel one off when i want one, and microwave for 30 seconds

  47. Jill @ Classy with a Kick on June 19, 2012 at 1:09 pm

I was SO excited to see the organic kale at TJ’s last weekend! Yay! While I think the chocolate coconut water is OK, it’s not really refreshing. I think the best one is at Whole Foods…it just has coconut and lime juice. Delicious! 🙂

  48. joelle (on a pink typewriter) on June 19, 2012 at 1:16 pm

Those naners look yummy – i’ve been craving a choco covered banana lately actually. That is weird that they’re mushy though.. I was picturing they’d be frozen.

  49. kristin on June 19, 2012 at 2:02 pm

liv is so adorable! i have to say i’m surprised you started her on solids early as i’ve read that babies’ digestive tracts aren’t fully developed to handle food until 6 months and i thought you’d be likely to do baby-led weaning? what made you decide to go this route?

    • Fitnessista on June 19, 2012 at 2:05 pm

we’re doing babyled weaning and spoon feeding. we’re a combo family over here. the pilot is really uncomfortable with the choking issue, so i give her mushy foods to pick up on her own, or puree some things for her and spoon feed her. she can already almost feed herself with the spoon
you can start solids as early was 4 months, when the baby gives signs that he/she is ready- our ped said to go for it

  50. Stephanie on June 19, 2012 at 2:13 pm

Our pedi also gave us the greenlight at our 4 month appointment. Samantha is 5 1/2 months today and she loves all of the pureed foods we have done in the last month and a half. I need to stop wussing out on the green veggies though. I have been sticking to carrots and sweet potatoes as our veggies so far and I know we need to try some greens but Im not sure how great the reaction will be. I also did not really do the rice cereal but since we formula feed I have been told that it is not as important because the formula is packed with iron whereas with breastfeeding the need for iron is a lot higher. The rice cereal just seemed to give her constipation so I stopped.
