The smell of [tempeh] bacon in the morning…

Friday!! So happy to see ya. Anything fun planned this weekend? We’re going to watch my little bro play football tonight- it’s been a year since I’ve seen him play and I’m excited to cheer with the fam. Not as excited for the awkward high school flashbacks haha.

This morning, I decided to use some of the tempeh I had on hand. I got on a huge tempeh kick last weekend- I ate it with every salad bar trip… along with cookies, of course.

Salad

I sizzled up some tempeh bacon:

Bacon

and enjoyed it in a wrap with two eggs and hot sauce.

Wrap

+ coffee that the Pilot brought me since we were out

Wrap 2

True love right there.

Along with the tempeh, here’s what else I picked up during this week’s grocery trip (thankfully the Pilot went to TJs before I got home for a lot of staples, like eggs, chocolate, almond milk, and fruit for Liv)

Groceries

The more exciting stuff:

Groceries 2

My favorite coconut milk creamer, new Vega protein, soup, Bragg’s vinaigrette (usually I stay away from anything that says “healthy” because it tends to be a gimmick- this dressing is amazing, though, and yes, healthy), garlic and herb Kerrygold butter (it’s just as glorious as anticipated) and an organic butternut squash. Maybe I’ll even share some with Oliv 😉 Don’t be mad at me, fellow pumpkin-lovers, but I think I like b-nut squash even more than pumpkin. There’s enough love to go around for all the fall produce, though.

Evening walk with the fam:

Walk2

and the sunset with no filter- it really is that gorgeous.

Sunset

This morning, Liv is taking a nap while I clean up around the casa, and then we’re meeting up with some friends. I may even take a CrossFit class this afternoon (pray for meeeeee)….

Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

xoxo

Friday faves: Here are some of the amazing pics you sent in this week! Keep ’em coming (@fitnessista), I love seeing them.

This one cracked me up- Curried Chicken Salad complete with her own chicken beggar 🙂

Something to talk about: What’s something you accomplished in September that you’re proud of? For me, the biggest one was taking the chance to travel away. It may not seem like a huge deal, but it was definitely outside my comfort zone. I also kicked up my NASM studying and finally got the chance to finally do a philanthropy project that had been put on the back burner.

Would you like an October workout calendar? I made one for August, but didn’t hear a ton of feedback- If you like it and think it’s helpful, please let me know. If not, my feelings won’t be hurt 😉 xo

I vote for the October workout calendar! And that sunset is gorgeous!

  2. Megan on September 28, 2012 at 12:41 pm

I’m so scared of tempeh. I want to like it, but everytime I think I wil try it, I chicken out. I used to feel that way about tofu and kombucha, both of which I love now, but just can’t seem to take the plunge. Any tips? I LOVE your bog, BTW, mostly because you’re real and I appreciate that. Thanks for sharing your life and helping ours.

    • Jen in MN on September 28, 2012 at 2:50 pm

Can I just be the dunce that asks……honestly, what IS tempeh? I truly don’t know. It looks….interesting. But one never knows until one tries! (-:

  3. Angie on September 28, 2012 at 12:55 pm

Starting graduate schools apps is probably my biggest accomplishment this month since I’ve been so lazy about it. I vote yes for the October calendar, even though I might not use it every day sometimes it’s good to have a reference in case I get bored with my own workouts.

  4. Kaila @healthyhelperblog! on September 28, 2012 at 1:05 pm

OMG that butternut squash is HUGE! Very jealous! I have been wanting to make my pear butternut squash soup for weeks now!

    • Fitnessista on September 28, 2012 at 1:06 pm

is the recipe on your blog?

  5. lisa on September 28, 2012 at 1:15 pm

I really liked the calendar. It is fun to have fun little things planned for certain days.

  6. Kayla on September 28, 2012 at 1:16 pm

I vote “yes” for an October workout calendar. Hubby and I just capped off racing season with a half marathon last weekend, and I’m now on my own in terms of a workout plan… I love yours, so I would be all over that. I did two Tabata Thursday videos and two ab burners last night, and I’m planning on a SSU workout tonight. Woot!

  7. RunEatRepeat on September 28, 2012 at 1:17 pm

That Vanilla Chai protein is perfect for a pumpkin-y smoothie! I used it to make pumpkin protein pudding yesterday!!

    • Tiffany @ She Loves Yoga on September 28, 2012 at 1:21 pm

Wow- sounds divine!! I have been in pumpkin overdrive lately- sounds just about right for the occasion 😉

  8. Jacqueline on September 28, 2012 at 1:23 pm

This may be silly, but this September I had my eye on a fancy new waterbottle. Instead of just buying it I made myself run a mile for every dollar it cost first, and I finally got to buy it yesterday– well-earned, in my opinion 😛

    • Fitnessista on September 28, 2012 at 1:25 pm

ohhh i love that idea! what water bottle did you get? i just ordered a new one last night- the pilot was teasing me for stealing his nalgene, so i got my own haha

  9. Irene on September 28, 2012 at 1:26 pm

I’ve been training for a half marathon, so I haven’t really been following your calandars, but it is almost over, so I’d be interested in giving an October calendar a chance!

  10. Julia on September 28, 2012 at 1:28 pm

YES to the calendar. I’m studying abroad right now and having a workout plan already designed for me is so helpful (I’ve been using old calendars for workout inspiration/planning)

  11. Rachel on September 28, 2012 at 1:37 pm

oo I love tempeh! I never thought of using it as bacon lol

  12. liz on September 28, 2012 at 1:40 pm

Yes yes yes to the October calendar!!! Love your calendars. And PS, i tried to do that at home workout that you posted while you were away but I couldn’t get it to work. It said it was private?

  13. justine on September 28, 2012 at 1:48 pm

God, I love the new formulations of the Vega products! They are the best – I’m not vegan, but I definitely choose these over any other type of protein shake. I just wish I could buy them where I live – as it is, I just wildly hoard packets from my travels in the USA and then ration them over the ensuing months as ‘treats.’ ( And there, I’ve just revealed myself to be so irretrievably sad that a packet of Vega protein is both a travel souvenir and a treat :))

  14. Lyndsay on September 28, 2012 at 1:48 pm

I am also studying for the NASM test! I feel like I should get a medical degree if I can truly learn all of this stuff! 🙂 When do you plan on taking the test? I’m looking at early December!

    • Fitnessista on September 28, 2012 at 1:57 pm

i’m hoping by the end of the month. it’s rough to find study time, but most of the info is review for me
do you have the study app? i’ve heard great things about it

  15. Amanda @ .running with spoons. on September 28, 2012 at 1:50 pm

Oh that sunset is just gorgeous, and it really ties in with one of the things that I’ve been trying to focus on lately… not a goal specifically, but just a general thing to keep in mind. I’ve really been trying to slow down and live in the moment. I’m a worrier and always thinking of what might (but most of the time never does) happen, which makes me miss out on a lot of the stuff that happens in my daily life, because I’m too busy living a life that never actually comes to be. It’s been a real effort to bring myself back to the present when my mind starts to wander, but slowly and surely it’s getting better 🙂

  16. Danielle@cleanfoodcreativefitness on September 28, 2012 at 1:51 pm

Have fun at CrossFit! I love that new Vega protein! It’s really great in the chocolate flavor! I’ve actually never tried tempeh! I’m nervous to cook it!

    • Fitnessista on September 28, 2012 at 2:04 pm

don’t be nervous- just season it with your favorite seasonings and throw it in the skillet with oil or butter. it’s delicious

  17. mary on September 28, 2012 at 1:57 pm

Speaking of chicken beggars– While I fix breakfast for everyone in the morning, I have a ferret under my feet begging for his chicken soup. He’ll even lie there on his back and just gaze up at me, in the middle of the kitchen floor.

    • Fitnessista on September 28, 2012 at 1:58 pm

no way!! i love ferrets 🙂

  18. Lauren @ The Homeostatic Mindset on September 28, 2012 at 2:06 pm

Going back to university to finish my last semester? Does that count? 😛 For real though, it would probably be attending a concert with a bajillion people in a hot room with no seats. You seriously could not move and the exits were far-ish away. Normally, this would not have been possible (I would have ran the other way- “I’M TRAPPED!”), but I stayed and was really chill. I just looked at the bright red exit signs when I felt anxious and reminded myself that I could push my way through the crowd and get out- I was not trapped. This is what I am most proud of I would say. That, plus having my first Pumpkin spice latte- it was something I wanted to conquer on my food bucket list. Oh…and by the way…I did both these things on the same day. NBD. Ch-yeahhhhh 😉

  19. Sarabell on September 28, 2012 at 2:16 pm

My favorite accomplishment this month was starting my new job, now working at home as a full-time writer. It was a very productive month for me and I actually did even better than I expected to in the first month so I’m pretty proud of that. =]

  20. Kari on September 28, 2012 at 2:21 pm

I would love a workout calendar for October!

  21. Alexandra on September 28, 2012 at 2:28 pm

I would love an October workout calendar if it isn’t too much of a pain for you 🙂 I basically took the month of September off – trying to start a lil fam of my own – and decided to give my body a bit of a rest but I am ready to start moving a bit more this month, just still taking it easy

  22. Averie @ Averie Cooks on September 28, 2012 at 2:34 pm

Tempeh bacon brings back circa 2009 memories, Raw 105, Matthew Kenny and what feels like a different lifetime ago! Thanks for the memories just by re-posting this!

  23. FitBritt@MyOwnBalance on September 28, 2012 at 2:37 pm

My biggest September accomplishment was finishing my first ever sprint triathlon! The hubs and I trained together all summer and were so proud to have finished and done pretty well! The freezing cold Massachusetts water and painful run were worth it! http://www.myownbalance.com/2012/09/05/30-under-30-update-my-first-triathlon/

  24. Rebecca on September 28, 2012 at 2:47 pm

My biggest accomplishment this month would have to be starting my career in teaching – I supply taught for a few days this month and I loved it!

  25. Laura @ She Eats Well on September 28, 2012 at 2:49 pm

I am with you. I think I love Butternut Squash more than pumpkin, but I do love pumpkin curries from Thai restaurants. Also, definitely love love love Kombucha squash.

    • Laura @ She Eats Well on September 28, 2012 at 2:49 pm

      OOPS, meant, Kabocha squash 🙂

      • Fitnessista on September 28, 2012 at 2:51 pm

kombucha squash would be awesome though 🙂

  26. Stacey on September 28, 2012 at 2:50 pm

I hope you do get to a Crossfit class and blog about it. No one I’ve asked has even heard of it. ??? I’d have to go out of town to try it and I’m still deciding.

  27. Hilary Caroline on September 28, 2012 at 2:51 pm

omg I LOVE tempeh bacon!! I haven’t made it in forever… I’m glad you reminded me it exists 🙂

it’s funny you mentioned accomplishments in september because I was just reflecting on what an exciting month it has been… I quit a job I hated in the corporate world a few months back because I wanted to be free to explore new career paths (okay and travel… there was some traveling 🙂 ) and I finally finally got started on an idea that was floating in my head for years, which is to start my own online boutique! I can’t believe it’s up and going now… it’s still brand new so not much is happening but I can’t help but feel proud and excited that I’m trying it, for better or worse! knock on wood i never need a real job again 😉

congrats on taking the time to travel and good luck on your test!

  28. Abby on September 28, 2012 at 3:05 pm

Is butternut squash more of a sweet squash or more neutral like spaghetti squash?

  29. Socal Rachel on September 28, 2012 at 3:05 pm

My September accomplished was a big one. I rode my bike from San Francisco to LA, 525 miles. And I did it for my Birthday! Thanks for sharing your workouts!

  30. Ali @ WHOLEistically Fit on September 28, 2012 at 3:08 pm

Mmmmm for some reason bacon sounds incredibly delicious right now. And, tempeh bacon – even better! I’ve never tried that before, but that’s clearly going to have to change, like, asap!! 🙂

  31. Ali on September 28, 2012 at 3:39 pm

Your tempeh looks delicious! And I think traveling away from your famjam is definitely something to be proud of. I’m excited for an October workout, and I liked the calendar… even though I couldn’t follow it exactly, it helps me remember to space out weights and cardio and rest days! <3

I’m in love with that vega vanilla chai, probably my favourite besides sun warrior!
Butternut squash is definitely delicious, but I can never find really good ones around here. Kabocha on the other hand is better than pumpkin in my opinion!
    That sunset is so pretty!

  34. Emily on September 28, 2012 at 4:14 pm

I would love a calendar! I TOTALLY miss them.

  35. Jessica on September 28, 2012 at 4:15 pm

I ran my first 10k in September!

  36. Laura on September 28, 2012 at 4:21 pm

I love butternut squash too! A little more subtle than pumpkin. But I swear, trying to prep one of those makes me feel like I am taking my life into my own hands!

  37. Emily on September 28, 2012 at 4:33 pm

I’m really proud of the fact that I kept up a pretty good workout schedule. I’m more into healthy eating and exercise has always been my downfall, I’ll get on kicks and then fall off the wagon but I’ve been going strong for a few months now and I’m feeling GREAT! By the way, that squash is HUGE and looks delish… I like them just as much as pumpkin!

  38. Ashlee on September 28, 2012 at 5:29 pm

Do you have a Mellow Mushroom there? They have the most amazing Tempeh Salad and Subs!

OY! I went to my high school’s homecoming last week because one of the girls I used to give softball hitting lessons to was on homecoming court and I had so much anxiety!!! I felt sad for all the little hoochie looking beezies trying to find their place! Oh high school.

ALSO. Vega Vanilla Chai = bbbaa baa bommmbb!!! So good in my protein muffins!!!!!!!

I’m up for an October workout! =)

I love butternut squash too! I just had the most amazing cinnamon roasted bnut squash from the WF hot bar yesterday! I don’t know how they make it taste so incredible.

I’m proud of making a goal to strength train my legs 1x a week and sticking to it!

  49. Mallory on September 29, 2012 at 8:05 am

Things I’m proud of from September: conquering the box jumps at CrossFit. This was a HUGE mental thing for me but I rocked it out. Also, I’m super proud of adopting a senior dog (everyone wants puppies but we adopted a 10 year old beagle <3) and buying a new house/car. It's been a VERY busy month!

For October, my goal is to continue to do CrossFit at least 4 times a week and to eat clean!

  50. Jenn on September 29, 2012 at 12:28 pm

Did the Fort 4 Fitness half marathon this morning!! Woo hoo! https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/47097_4300631467279_660325714_n.jpg

Goals: cut back on the chips and eat healthier meals in Oct. It will be better once late football practices are over:)
