The weirdest breakfast ever

(and that one time I had to ride in an ambulance. Please skip this post if youโ€™re squeamish, like yours truly.)

Hi ๐Ÿ™‚ Hope youโ€™re all having a wonderful day. Iโ€™m typing this with one hand because I had a little incident today.

It all started with this weird breakfast I had yesterday.

Weird

This is going to sound totally bizarre, but thatโ€™s Elanaโ€™s Pantry Paleo bread (made with some applesauce so it was sweet), cubed and topped with almond milk and fresh fruit. It was almost like a bread pudding (so good!!) and I knew I wanted it again for breakfast today. Livi was happily eating her oatmeal and fruit at the table, and I was in the kitchen, using a knife to shimmy the last hunk of bread out of the loaf pan. The knife slipped and went directly into my thumb. I immediately knew that it wasnโ€™t a โ€œput a Band-Aid on it and call it a dayโ€ kinda cut.

If youโ€™ve been reading the blog for a while (thank you!), you know Iโ€™m the biggest weenie with blood and medical stuff. Even though I was panicking in my head, I somehow kept it together while I tried to call 911 and hold a cloth over my thumb as it shot blood all over the kitchen and floors. The most frustrating part: my phone wouldnโ€™t dial. My fingers were slightly wet since Iโ€™d rinsed my thumb in the sink, and the keypad wouldnโ€™t work. It was pretty scary/annoying simultaneously trying to call for help and pep-talk myself out of passing out. Finally, I got the โ€œemergencyโ€ button to work and the EMTs came quickly.

After the vitals and questions, Liv and I were off to the hospital.

Wahbulance

(She was strapped into the kidโ€™s seat behind me, chatting with the EMTs and waving at me)

The Pilot met us there, I got some stitches, and all is bueno now. The amazing part was that I didnโ€™t cry, even with how freaked out I was, until the nurse pulled my thumb apart to inspect the tendon. (I was close, but it was intact, thank goodness.) I’m just thankful that it I was being treated instead of anyone else, and that it wasnโ€™t worse.

Hospital bed

Livi was amazing during the entire thing. She was also really interested in the medical stuff, and watched intently during my shots, as I was cleaned up, and my thumb was stitched back together.

Iโ€™m also thankful for the team of EMTs (they grabbed the bag of snacks Iโ€™d originally packed for Liviโ€™s school day + her shoes and my purse), the sweet nurses (one was singing โ€œLet It Goโ€ with Liv), and the Pilot, who just finished cleaning up the aftermath all over the kitchen and patio floors.

Breakfast ended up being even better:

Pancakes

(Gluten-free pancakes and eggs at the Broken Yolk)

Hope youโ€™ve had a happy and pleasantly uneventful day. Thank you to all of you for the sweet well wishes on Instagram, too <3

xoxo

Gina

Gah, I totally hate blood too. I’m sure I would’ve passed out — good job not doing so!

  2. Hillary | Nutrition Nut on the Run on July 31, 2014 at 6:31 pm

I did the same thing to my thumb back in October with broken glass washing dishes — had to get 4 stitches. I hope you don’t have nerve damage like I do. Still not 100% yet.

  3. Laura @ She Eats Well on July 31, 2014 at 6:33 pm

I wouldn’t be able to look at everything being done to mend the thumb. I don’t mind needles, but always turn away so I don’t have to look. You are brave! Glad everything is okay…and thanks for the breakfast idea – I love that paleo bread.

  4. Christabel on July 31, 2014 at 6:34 pm

Oh man! Two weeks ago I did almost the exact same thing! I was cutting an avocado in my hand (use a cutting board people!!) and I sliced open the side of my hand. I could tell it was bad news. I have a 10 month old and it was early Sunday morning. My partner volunteers on Sundays and the closest relatives are 20 min away. I ended up wrapping my hand up in paper towels and tape and driving to urgent care with the baby. I got three stitches but that sucker was DEEP! I almost got a tendon too.

Worst part, besides the blood: when the baby had a major blowout in the waiting room.

I hope yours feels better soon. It hurts pretty bad in those first couple days.

  5. Karissa on July 31, 2014 at 6:44 pm

Oh my goodness I’m so sorry!! I hope you are well on the road to recovery and I’m glad it wasn’t worse!
Thoughts and prayers for speedy recovery!

OMG! You poor thing!! That sucks! I’m glad you’re ok though. I’m the worst with knives too! That’s why all the knives in my kitchen are really blunt–they’re literally almost like plastic–lol. I don’t trust myself around knives–I always always cut myself. Thank G-d you’re ok and that the thumb is still intact!! The thumb is pretty important finger–lol ๐Ÿ™‚ I hope you’re feeling better. Take care of yourself and rest up! If it starts throbbing tylenol always helps me ๐Ÿ™‚
And just curious–that tank is so pretty! Is it from Om Girl? I have one similar in a darker shade of purple. Oh and where are those sweet leggings from from the Zumba video yesterday?

    • Kimmy on August 1, 2014 at 12:36 pm

It’s actually worse to use dull knives than sharp knives! You’re more likely to cut yourself with a dull knife because you’re using more force!

  7. Megan @ Skinny Fitalicious on July 31, 2014 at 6:59 pm

Glad to hear you’re ok! That is very scary. I live alone and have fallen down the stairs a couple times and thought to myself what would I do if I couldn’t get up to get the phone. Accidents really do happen at home!

  8. Teresa on July 31, 2014 at 7:05 pm

You called 911 because you cut your thumb? It sounds bad, but geez, did you need an ambulance?

    • Fitnessista on July 31, 2014 at 7:09 pm

i was gushing blood everywhere, not capable of driving, or putting liv in her carseat by myself so yes, needed to call for help

    • CaitlinHTP on July 31, 2014 at 7:30 pm

I totally would’ve done the same thing. I cannot imagine trying to get a two year old in a car seat (which requires two hands) while you are gushing blood everywhere.

      • CaitlinHTP on July 31, 2014 at 7:31 pm

Hell, sometimes getting my kid into the car seat requires three hands. ๐Ÿ™‚

        • Alexandra on July 31, 2014 at 7:36 pm

I don’t even have kids yet and I would’ve done the same thing ๐Ÿ™‚

    • JennP on July 31, 2014 at 10:22 pm

The EMTs would rather pick you up at home and transport you calmly to the hospital than clean up the wreckage from a head-on collision because you passed out behind the wheel (with your toddler in the backseat, no less). Please re-examine your thinking. Caution, especially where 2 ton vehicles and innocent bystanders are involved, is very important!

      • Hayley on August 1, 2014 at 1:18 am

        Good comment, I totally agree.
You poor thing Gina. I did a minor slice to the finger last week. It is that awful moment of’oh gosh….what did I just do and how bad is it’ whilst trying not to to freak the kids out. Glad you are on the mend xxx

      • CaitlinHTP on August 1, 2014 at 9:50 pm

        Great comment and so true.

  9. Jill on July 31, 2014 at 7:06 pm

Oh no! OUCH! Glad you are ok ๐Ÿ™‚ Blood makes me SO woozy. but other people’s more so than my own.

  12. Kim @ Hungry Healthy Girl on July 31, 2014 at 7:21 pm

Oh no! I’m so glad you’re okay and it wasn’t more serious. I hate cuts, so I would be the same way- trying to talk myself out of not passing out.

  13. Dominique @ Eat, Pray, Lift on July 31, 2014 at 7:23 pm

Aye carumba, so scary! You are a brave one…I would have lost my sh*t as soon as I saw blood “shooting” out. Sounds like maybe Liv has a future in health/medicine if she handled it all like a champ!

Hope you heal fast! I hear chocolate and wine have medicinal properties that help speed things up. ๐Ÿ˜‰

    • Fitnessista on July 31, 2014 at 7:39 pm

thank you! livi was a trooper for sure, and definitely didn’t inherit my squeamish gene
i don’t think i can have wine with the pain meds ๐Ÿ™ (major sad face) so more chocolate for me

  14. Katie on July 31, 2014 at 7:24 pm

  16. Alexandra on July 31, 2014 at 7:34 pm

So glad to hear you’re okay! I know I would have been freaking out! Livi is such a trooper to stay cool during that! Feel better girl!

  17. Kirtley Freckleton @ The Gist of Fit on July 31, 2014 at 7:38 pm

Haha I’m so sorry but that was a cute post! I am a nurse and think it’s cute when people are ‘weenies’ with blood.
I am SO glad you are doing OK–especially that the tendon is fine–and that the nurses treated you well. You can get a mix of responses from them.
    Take care!!

  18. Wendy on July 31, 2014 at 7:46 pm

My husband is a firefighter/paramedic. They are regularly called out at 2am by people with a sore toe or hangnail. A mama with a bleeding hand and a toddler is a completely valid call. Nice work holding it together.:)

  19. Kirtley Freckleton@ The Gist of Fit on July 31, 2014 at 7:47 pm

Gah! I am debating if I should write this and think I probably shouldn’t because most likely already know and I don’t want to sound super uber obnoxious!! Oh dear I think I will. Here we go. I think I feel obligated as a nurse haha.

JUUUUST in case you don’t have access to help right away and this happens again, here’s one tip! (friend to friend type tip OK?)

First thing to do when you are gushing blood everywhere is put a lot of pressure on it (just grab and squeeze your thumb) and raise it above your heart until the blood calms down. You can put a towel around it first to absorb the blood. Sometimes it takes awhile for the blood to stop. Don’t remove the towel to ‘check’ it for awhile because it will restart the bleeding.

That’s it! I know, so lame of me. But maybe it will help someone out?? Take care!!

  20. haley @Cupcakes and Sunshine on July 31, 2014 at 7:51 pm

I’m so glad you’re okay! Wishing fast healing for you!<3

  22. Lori on July 31, 2014 at 7:57 pm

Ugh. Once, right after I moved to LA and knew only a few people here, a wine glass broke in my hand while I was rinsing it, and cut my finger pretty deeply. I couldn’t reach anyone I knew and my neighbor (who I didn’t know well) ended up driving me to the emergency room. It didn’t even occur to me to call an ambulance! I think I cried the whole day because I was scared and alone. And because I am a giant baby. I am impressed that you didn’t cry! Even though it was harder in some ways, it probably helped that you had Liv to be strong for. Wishing you a speedy recovery!

  23. Tiffany on July 31, 2014 at 8:00 pm

Oh my gosh! I am not squeamish, but I would totally freak out if something like that happened while I was home by myself with the girls. Good job on being the picture of calm for Livi!

  24. RachelG on July 31, 2014 at 8:18 pm

Poor Gina! You definitely kept it together or Liv, whether you knew it at the time or not. I’m so glad you’re OK! ๐Ÿ™‚

  26. Sam on July 31, 2014 at 8:32 pm

So glad you’re ok! Cooking cuts are the worst.. Especially when you love to cook. I’m always a little apprehensive when cooking for a few weeks afterwards.

    • Fitnessista on August 1, 2014 at 12:53 am

same! i’m afraid to get back in there

  27. Jenni on July 31, 2014 at 8:43 pm

This reminds me of the time my mom sliced into her hand cutting bread rolls on Thanksgiving! Note to readers: don’t hold a bread roll IN YOUR HAND as you cut it with your other hand. Your story is a tad different, but case in point…cutting bread is dangerous! My family still jokes about the blood spattered Thanksgiving rolls. Haha. I’m so glad you (and your thumb) are okay! Livi is too cute. What a trooper.

I’ve done that exact same thing before when I was in college! I still have a scar and when it was heeling I got used to holding it up like a “thumbs up.”

  32. Erin @ Her Heartland Soul on July 31, 2014 at 8:55 pm

Omg I’m so glad you’re okay! My dad was fixing the garage door once and the wire flew off the hinge and snapped him on his wrist. He laid down really quick because he wasn’t sure if it cut something really bad but blood was everywhere. He screamed for me to call 911. It was so scary and terrifying and I was bawling the entire time. Kudos to you for handling it as well as you did.

  33. Crystal on July 31, 2014 at 9:03 pm

OMG that’s so awful!! Glad it wasn’t worse, and luckily it sounds like Livi handled it well…it probably helped that you stayed calm. I would have passed out from the sight of my own blood. No more using knives to dig bread out of loaf pans young lady!

    • Fitnessista on August 1, 2014 at 12:52 am

right? and tom always tells me to be careful with the knives. such a fail but i’m so thankful livi was ok and a total trooper

  34. Andrea on July 31, 2014 at 9:03 pm

I know this totally isn’t the point of the post lol, but how do you make the paleo bread with applesauce? Do you substitute for something or do you just add it in with all the other ingredients – and how much? Glad your thumb is okay!

    • Fitnessista on August 1, 2014 at 12:51 am

t requires 5 eggs but i only had 4. i used a container of applesauce as the 5th egg, which worked ok. it was dry bread but had a great sweet taste

  35. Jen on July 31, 2014 at 9:29 pm

I cut my thumb today, too! Mine only needed some pressure and a band-aid, luckily. I’m glad it worked out ok for you. Heal quickly!

Oh my gosh that sucks! I’m so glad your little lady wasn’t scared. Good for you for calling help! I am always getting my hands with my knives but never get cut because they are so dull, this always keeps me thankful for not having sharp knives (furi knifes). I’m glad your ok. Happy healing.

  39. GiGi Eats on July 31, 2014 at 10:41 pm

I have 5 different scars on my hands from stabbing myself, but I never ONCE got stitches because I told myself to SUCK IT UP and I didn’t want to be at the hospital for hours and hours on end. All of my cuts needed about 5 to 8 stitches that’s for sure though. I also remember my dad, who is clearly not as tough as me, lol, cutting his thumb on Christmas Eve (when we celebrate) at around 5pm and we all had to go to the ER – ugh, it was sad because I just wanted to celebrate XMAS with my family AT HOME!!! ๐Ÿ™
