Liv’s New Room
Someone is officially moved and settled in her big girl room!
She’s only one year old, but has already had three different rooms:
next to our bed in the bassinet
her nursery– the loft attached to our master bedroom (now an office)
and now, her permanent room. That is: her room until we move, if we move (as a military fam, we have no idea what our fate is. It’s equally exciting and horrifying.), and thus dubbed the “big girl room.”
While I was looking for ideas to put it together (thank youuuu, ย Pinterest!), I thought about using an all-new color palette with bright colors and mixed patterns. As much as I loved the pics I saw, they all looked a little too grown up- like for an elementary school-aged girl. She’s 14 months, so I didn’t think a tree decal would be too babyโฆ plus I’d been dying to put one up for her and the loft had no room for one.
It’s perfect, especially with the floating shelves.
Here’s the link to the tree decal– from Etsy.
She also has a new bench for reading:
(from Target)
and a comfy chair – a gift from her nana.
We tried to get everything put together as much as possible before moving her crib into the room (before, it was a guest room meets playroom), and when it was finished, we brought her in. She gasped, said,”Ooooooooh, tree!” ย and immediately started to point and “hoo” at the owls. I think she’s a fan ๐
We set it up so that it’s entirely baby-proofed with all of the outlets covered and the furniture mounted to the walls:
The closet is emptied out with toys in baskets on the floor to be easily removed for playtime,
and we nailed the curtains to the walls until we get a curtain rod. At first I thought it would be temporary, but this way absolutely no light gets into the room, so we’ve left it like this. It looks kind of.. rustic? (Tip for fellow parents: blackout curtains are a lifesaver)
Ideally, I’d like her room to become a Montessori-themed room with freedom to safely access the things she wants to use or play with. I’d like her to try to dress herself and pick out outfits (later on- for now the hangers are still on the higher racks) read, play with toys, and enjoy music- she’s already a pro at working her CD player for our dance parties.
The decal can be easily removed from the wall if we choose to change her room’s theme, but I’m thinking it will be appropriate for at least another year. We could still be here, or across the country ๐
Do you remember your first room growing up? I remember bits and pieces from mine: the toy box of wood blocks my dad made for me, my forest and mushroom lamp, and my floral dresser.
xoxo
Gina
Waow! I really, really like the room! it’s so pretty and perfect! Good job!
What I remember from my first room, is the carpet. There was cars, and roads and stuff on it ๐

Looks great! I have been contemplating a decal for my baby boy’s room but wasn’t sure how easy they were to remove. Glad to know some of them are, will have to look for one now ๐
How cute. One of My first rooms was bright PINK and I shared it with my sister with twin beds. Then we moved to a bunk bed when we got older. I miss those days. I love the tree too!
Does she like the Rody horse? I’ve been looking at one for my daughter…
she is in love with the rody horse!
Very cute! We are going to get some wall decals when we move again in a few weeks. We have used them in almost every place we’ve lived. The first bedroom that I remember was the one I shared with my 2 sisters who are 2.5 & 4 years older than me. We were at Luke AFB. It was a small bedroom with bunk beds that my Dad built for us. There were toys and clothes every where. Our room was the room that all 6 of us played in. Our youngest brother was born 6 months before we moved to a new base so he never got to play in the room.
I loved growing up in an Air Force family. I still love moving and after living in the same town for a few years get the itch to move. In the 5 years and a few days since my husband and I got married we have lived in 5 different places and we’re getting ready to make the move to the 6th in a few weeks. Our last move and the one we’re making this time have been bigger moves, 220 miles away.
Super cute, I love that wall decal.
I perfectly remember my room growing up, I’ve even been able to describe to my mom where all my furniture was when I was still in my crib (probably about a year old). I still remember the faint pink walls and floral wallpaper border. (anyone else remember wallpaper borders being a thing?)
When I was a bit older, I had a tall dresser and this lovely Amish-built wooden bed that I insisted on giving away when we moved when I was 11. It was a dumb decision because I’ve missed that bed ever since.
What color is the paint on the wall? You guys did such a great job!
thank you! i have no idea- the guy we hired to paint them room chose it for us ๐
It looks so cute! The tree decal came out great. I’m in the process of figuring out nursery themes for Baby #2 so I love checking out what others have done.
I do remember my room as a little girl! I had a blue room that had wallpaper covered in dolls. I used to kiss them all goodnight before being tucked into bed. Ahh memories! :)Hope Liv has similar great memories from her new big girl room.
It looks beautiful!
All I remember about my first room is sharing it with my sister and seeing alot of stuffed animals, hehe.
I remember my first room! My mom made it Wizard of Oz theme and she had a yellow brick road with ruby red slippers painted at the end of it. On the weekends we would go and collect wizard of oz things to fill my room with (more like her as I was like one years old) but by the time I was old enough my room felt like walking inside of the movie! I also had a Cairn Terrier like Toto, being little was magical! Beautiful decal, I love ETSY! Love + Shine CourtStar
Oh my gosh! Time flew and Livi grew!!! Her bedroom is just as cute ๐
Nice job! It looks like a lovely mix of fun and calm. We moved so much when I was young I don’t remember any of my rooms before age 10.
Liv sure seems to know a lot of words and sounds for many different things and animals. My 12 month old still has no interest in trying to talk. We definitely show him and explain things as we do it and he knows what we’re talking about when we say things. He just want to repeat them…yet.
My brother-in-law didn’t talk at all until he was 3 years old. My MIL was sure something was wrong with him. Nope. He just didn’t feel like talking. He’s now a doctor and doing just fine in the vocabulary de
Oops. My phone flipped out… Meant department. So we just keep teaching him and I know he’ll talk when he’s ready.
The room looks good! We did the same thing for our son. We wanted it to look like a kid’s room without being to grown-up or babyish.
from what i’ve heard, i think it’s pretty common for girls to be more verbal and boys to be more mobile initially. they all balance out in the end ๐
It looks beautiful! I love the decal. My daughter’s room is ready for a makeover and I’ve been eyeing up a dandelion decal.
The only thing I really remember from my first bedroom was the cabin bed that I had (obviously I was much older than Olivia lol). It was white with a red trim and the wardrobe and desk were underneath it. I used to be able to crawl behind it and hide to read books. Climbing that ladder every night was just magical when I was a kid ๐
her room looks so adorable!! and where is that little baby buddha from?! love that!
My older brother and I were 18 months apart so our first room was shared. We had little twin beds side by side and a huge framed print of owls and various animals. I love that picture even to this day!
What a cute room – I’ve seen TONS of those tree decals but never with the floating shelves and I think that’s such a clever idea. Love all the pink ๐
Very cute! I love owl themes and we put owl decals in my baby girl’s room (even though she’s still in our room and her brother is sleeping in there with the owls, lol).
I think Olivia probably doesn’t use Sophie anymore, but I just found out that she has been recalled in other countries due to cancer-causing substances. I’m so bummed because I loved Sophie for my son and had just introduced her to my 3-month-old. Here’s the link where I found out about it: http://www.ourhomegrownadventures.com/2012/08/22/sophie-la-girafe-teething-babies-best-friend/
that’s scary! yeah, she hasn’t chewed on a sophie in quite a while
OMG the tree decal is too cute!! I am obsessed with her room! Adorable.
So cute!
Growing up we usually lived either in base housing or rentals so I never had a room that was specially designed. (and, I shared a room with my twin brother until we were 5)
That tree decal is SO cute! I love the shelving that goes with it too!
That is such a beautiful room! I wish I had that nice of a room as a baby.
My very first room I don’t remember, but my second room, from the age of 3-9, I definitely remember. It was the best. I had drawers under my bed that I could pull out and hide behind- pretty much the best hide and seek spot EVER.
I remember my childhood bedroom like yesterday! I had a kitchenette where I could serve tea, always had a bookshelf/reading corner and when I was toddler age I had a wide wallpaper border with Victorian dolls on it. I always tried to open my door super fast and catch the dolls having tea parties without me. ๐
Love her new room!
I remember my big girl room – my parents built a house when I was 3 and I remember the only thing in my room when we went during construction was this funky green pendant lamp. And I remember later on having gray bedding with a big cat on it. It’s funny the things we remember. I also remember that first Christmas I woke up to find an easel in my room from Santa, and I didn’t understand how he got in without me waking up to his bells!
We also have that tree decal (or atleast a very similar brown one with pink flowers). Must be the thing for January 2012 babies to have ๐ Love the room! It is very calming!
I remember the cat wallpaper I had in my first room…
I love the tree though! So cute! I will have to save some of your pictures for some day when I have children!
Love Liv’s new room! I’m kind of jealous of that precious tree with the owl. It looks great!
Adorable room for an adorable girl.
cute!!
I love love the tree with floating shelves!! Liv’s room is super cute, great job!!
My memory of a childhood room was when I was about 5 and my sister and I shared a room. I remember jumping up and down on the bed, that was always a good time ๐
My first room. When I was a baby I shared it with my brother but when I was 2ish he moved to our finished attic so I got my own room! The first thing we did was paint it a bright pink! I had shelves that my dad built on the wall and a desk painted all different colors that my mom painted herself! I love my old room!
The thing that really stands out in my mind is there was no closet in my room or my brothers room so our closet was in the dinnig room. Our closet had two bars in it. One on the top and one on the bottom. I loved that because even as a 3 and 4 year old I was able to choose my own clothes without my mom. I did have a dresser that belonged to my great grandmother that i still have and that helped with picking out school clothes. I loved my old room.
Love the big girl room! That tree and the pink leaves are so adorable!
I definitely remember my first room growing up. I distinctly remember being in my crib, and I can still picture the wallpaper.
Looks awesome… I need to muster some motivation and do some redecorating in our house!
So adorable!
I love the tree and colours you’ve used!
I love the tree and shelves as branches! A really cute idea!
I don’t remember loads about my first room but my Dad made my brother a ‘Batmobile’ as a bed! Very cool. I was very jealous!
Very lovely room, I especially love the wallpapers. And your baby looks absolutely adorable.
Aww, adorable cute. I can’t wait to have my own house to decorate however I want ๐
It looks beautiful and the best part about it is that it was put together with so much love. She is so fortunate to have two wonderful parents who adore her and can afford to give her such a beautiful room!
Wow! I am officially jealous of a baby! I want that wall art in my own room ๐
LOVE her big girl room! So adorable!
I ordered a wall decal off etsy for Baby G’s nursery, shelves too! I am excited to get them and get his room all together! Actually I ordered prints off there too for his room!
ETSY owns me, lol! <3
Her room looks wonderful and super functional! I ADORE the tree decal, especially the owls! You did a great job putting a fresh spin on the brown/pink color scheme! ๐
My first room was shared with my sister. It had this nursery rhyme wallpaper from London that my sis and I hated when we were kids (we thought it was too babyish), but now I’m a bit nostalgic for it. They’d also gotten us a big canopy bed that we shared, with matching dressers and end tables. It was so 80’s, and it was fabulous. I wouldn’t do it now, but back then it was pretty epic.
Beautiful room!
My first bedroom was shared with my 2 sisters. We had bunk beds that we would pretend were giant ships on the oceans- so many adventurous voyages were made on that ship! ๐
Looks great, lucky little girl!
And the only thing I remember about my first room is having a window sill, and I loved it. ANd now I am so happy that my little one has a window sill in his first room!
I love the tree, Gina! I absolutely adore her room! I remember my room because it was the same until we moved into our new house when I was in grade 8! Haha! It was the same for such a long time! Minty green walls because my parents didn’t know if I’d be a boy or a girl with elephant wall paper. The elephants were all carrying coloured balloons in their trunks.
Oh memories ๐
Gorgeous! I love it….now I wish I had a baby so I could decorate her room. It looks like so much fun!! You did an awesome job. ๐
super cute–I love the pink leaves on the tree!
Hi Gina, I am not a military wife. However, my work requires me to be transferred every 2-3 years just like you do. I would love to get a house of my own and decorate it so that I can call it “home”. But knowing that I won’t be able to stay in it for long has been holding me back. Do you mind sharing with me how you adjust yourself to not over-spend on decorating a “temporary home” while at the same time calling it “home”? Do you have any special considerations that you take into account when you purchase a piece of furniture?
Love the trees and owls! I remember having a sesame street themed room. My mom bought extra flatsheets and made them into curtains to match the bed. It was all primary colors, not girly at all haha
I love how the video monitor is on the wall. I get it ๐ Now how did you get it to stay up?
