Homemade Bitchin’ bowl
We all knew it had to happen, right? ๐
Ever since I first tried this lovely creation a couple of weeks ago, I knew I had to endeavor making one at home. Itโs really everything you could wish for: satisfying brown rice (you can also add black beans here), crisp chopped veggies, spicy Bitchinโ Sauce (thatโs really the name), creamy avocado and a drippy egg on top.
EVERYTHING.
The key ingredient here of course is the Bitchinโ Sauce. They sell this at local farmerโs markets and is almost like a hummus, yet made with almonds instead of garbanzo beans. They have a huge variety of flavors, and the guys that work at the booth are hilariousโฆ and kind of intense. They yell โWHATโS UP?!โ at you and enthusiastically tell everyone to “have a Bitchinโ day.” Itโs perfect in so many ways. Even though Iโm happy to support this awesome company with my newfound bowl addiction, I know theyโre not widely available or cheap to ship, so I figured Iโd share my at-home version for those of you whoโd like to try it out.
The base:
-Brown rice and black beans
The veg:
-1/2 avocado, chopped
-green onion, cilantro, jalapeรฑo, tomato, shredded cabbage
The sauce:
Recipe is here! I made it according to these directions. The changes I made: soaked the almonds, used olive oil (half the suggested amount), and added 1/2 teaspoon onion powder and 1/2 teaspoon dried mustard. For a chipotle variation, I later added one chipotle chile in adobo sauce. As you can see, Iโve been enjoying these fairly often. ๐
The egg:
-Over easy, or however you like it ๐
Assemble,
drizzle,
top,
Enjoy!
Thanks San Diego for my food bowl obsession. First the acai bowls, then the breakfast bowl, and now these. ๐

Favorite food combo in a bowl: go.
Something to do: this Orangetheory-inspired treadmill workout!
THIS LOOKS SO GOOD. Love the addition of jalepenos for a KICK! ๐
Extra points to you for that bitchin sauce AND avocado! I swear any bowl is so much better with avocado. There’s literally nothing you can’t pair with it.
Let me thank you for this introduction! This bowl sounds fantastic with the added jalapeรฑo.
Yummmm that sounds so good! I’ll definitely have to try this! We’ve been looking for a new sauce for our quinoa bowls and I bet this would be perfect!
Wow, thank you!!! This looks amazing! Every time you post a recipe I just want to make it right away!
Oh dang, this looks fresh, delicious, and intense all at the same time! Which I guess is why it’s called “bitchin'”. ๐
I am in awe of your tolerance for such large slices of jalapeรฑo!
YUM! I can’t wait to try it! Thanks so much for sharing! ๐
Looks yummy!
The egg on top is my favorite part of this recipe! I need to reintroduce this into many of my meals now ๐
Very cool. I love the farmers market in Austin for all of its discoveries too. My boyfriend doesn’t eat hummus so this would be awesome to have as a sauce we could both eat. Thanks for the recipe!
Ummm, if that could just make its way through the screen and to my face, that’d be great.
Love any type of oats and nut butter om nom nom nom!
YUM! It’s a delicious bowl of clean eating!
It reminds me of when I come home, chop up a bunch of veggies from the fridge in a bowl and add salad dressing /any protein I can find. I have never thought of the warm over-easy egg (better than hard-boiled!) and I am missing the rice + sauce! Inspiration!!

Looks like a delicious, healthy lunch! I will give it a try.
Uhm.. Jeni’s grass-fed ice cream and coconut cream… ๐
That looks amazing! This is the perfect idea for lunch!
Ooh, I haven’t tried this kind of bowl or acai bowls either! I haven’t seen them anywhere around me, so I think I’ll have to try your recipes ๐
This looks and sounds awesome. Thanks for sharing, Gina ๐
Ahhh, this looks amazing! My farmer’s market sells something similar call Awesome Sauce and it really is awesome! I’m excited to try this (except I’ll probably just buy the sauce!).
Yum! This sounds absolutely delicious … or should I say “bitchin'”?! ๐ Thanks for sharing, Gina! xo
This bowl sounds SOOO good!! The sauce AND a dippy egg? Gonna have to try it out!
This is going on our menu this week for sure. It would be a great swap for my usual hummus. The husband is excited to try it too!
I love eating combo bowls like this with a ton of good stuff mixed together. Awesome recipe!
HAHA “The Bitchin’ Sauce” I love it. So adorable.
This looks incredible. Bowls are perfect, so easy to make (especially when you meal prep tons of ingredients on a Sunday), and look *impressive*!

I was hoping you would recreate this recipe after you posted a picture of it! I’m a wimp, so I’d probably replace the jalapeรฑos with bell peppers, but otherwise, I’m in love with this recipe idea! ๐
OMG, love this! Can you believe I still haven’t made it (in 1.5 years of living in SD) to the Hillcrest farmers’ market?! And I’ve never seen this bowl at the Bitchin’ Sauce stand at the Little Italy one! I have to get there soon….
P.s. let me know if you want to do some Orangetheory together! I’m working it into my training for my next half (coming up in March).
This sounds amazing! Thanks so much for sharing! I’ve never heard of bitchin sauce before!
Holy freaking crap. Must try that sauce ASAP.
Yum!!! That looks amazingโฆ especially with the egg on top. I love bowls where you just throw everything in together.
When you first posted on this bowl it immediately reminded me of Korean Bibimbap…similar concept: rice, meat, spinach, carrots, egg & spicy sauce. You should try it if you haven’t had it before. Trader Joe’s sells a frozen version…not exactly like one you’d get from a Korean place but it’s alright…
I will always love a burrito bowl from Chipotle…
that sounds amazinnnnnnggggg
Thanks, Gina! Luckily, Bitchin’ Sauce is available at the Whole Foods up here in LA. Can’t wait to make this bowl.
Oo looks good! Yum! x
That sauce sounds INCREDIBLE. I am a pretty firm believer that almost any food is better out of a bowl.
This seriously looks bitchin’!
The name alone makes you wanna eat it…haha!
what about salsa instead of the “bitchin sauce”?
that would be delicious!
This looks nothing like a sauce and more like a paste.
yeah mine came out a little thick!
Your recipes always look amazing; however, I could never add so many slices of jalepenos – just looking at them makes my mouth tingle. I think I’m a weenie!
hahah i eat them like bell peppers. i think i’ve burned some taste buds off ๐
This sounds like the perfect lunch, or even breakfast. I need to get on making a batch of that sauce!
I’m glad you posted this! I forgot the egg, all 3 dinners of it in a row! So I remade it. My sauce is much better this round. I tweaked it to my tastes.
YUM! I am loving the sliced jalapeรฑos in this!
OK, this looks like something I need in my life. Plus, I love the name! Thanks for sharing because I am pinning.
Your nail polish! Is it Chinchilly by Essie??
yes! you’re good!
I can’t wait to make this for dinner tonight! How long did you soak the almonds though?
I need to make this. tomorrow.
My favorite bowl combo is an everything-but-the-kitchen-sink salad beast – with a drippy egg, avocado and nutritional yeast!
How long would you recommend to soak the almonds for?? I’m sad I never got a chance to try this. I grew up in SD:) but I’m visiting in sept:) thanks for the recreation! I love your blog!!
