Family: How workouts have changed in the third trimester

Round 2!

Heading towards the finish line (which is really the starting lineโ€ฆ) ๐Ÿ™‚

Wild thing

Things are slowing way, way down over here. Itโ€™s a quick transition from second trimester honeymoon period to the third trimester slump. For motivation, Iโ€™ve been reminding myself of how good it feels to work out, and how great I feel afterwards. Itโ€™s usually all I need to get going, even though itโ€™s really hot and Iโ€™d rather sit on the couch with a soft pretzel. I definitely hit the point where I see the fear in everyoneโ€™s eyes when Iโ€™m at the gym. I can see inside their brains, and theyโ€™re all picturing me going into labor. To be totally honest, Iโ€™m really scared my water will break when Iโ€™m at the barre studio. The entire studio is carpetโ€ฆ.

Current workouts:

BODYPUMP (much lighter weights). Everything still feels great with BODYPUMP, and strength training makes me feel strong. Strength endurance is going to come in handy on labor day, and I think Iโ€™ll be glad to know that I squatted as much as humanly possible. Squats are also excellent for the PC muscle, so Iโ€™m glad Iโ€™ve been able to stick with training the entire lower body and core through BODYPUMP and Barre.

TRX. TRX has been a great friend since itโ€™s so easy to customize. You can instantly progress or regress according to your distance from the base point. Iโ€™m also still enjoying basic strength training using the kettlebells or dumbbells.

Chest press

Barre. Barre still feels awesome. I modify the heck out of the core series -stay tuned on an entire post about core training throughout pregnancy- but other than that, itโ€™s another option thatโ€™s easy to scale depending on how Iโ€™m feeling. It also feels challenging and fun without being *too much*.

Walking on the treadmill: Iโ€™m still doing the treadmill slow crawl for occasional cardio. My maternity belt and chiropractic care have worked wonders, and I can walk relatively pain-free as long as I stay at 3.5mph or under. Iโ€™ve been using it as a chance to catch up on reading and shake my legs out a bit.

Occasional Zumba or cardio at home (TurboFire, Insanity, or Les Mills with modifications)

PiYo! Iโ€™m finishing up the 4th week right now with some friends on Facebook, and have enjoyed the group motivation and chance to try something new (with modifications). PiYo includes a lot of movement -it feels very dance-y- and is entirely different than anything Iโ€™ve tried.

Stretching

Things that used to feel good but donโ€™t really anymore:

Spin. Itโ€™s just too much pressureโ€ฆ down there. It feels uncomfortable, and even with the handlebars at their highest point, I still feel like it compresses my belly to hold onto them. I was taking classes until a couple of weeks ago, and then I was like, โ€œNope. Weโ€™re done.โ€ I was a little bummed that I havenโ€™t been teaching Spin, and felt like my maternity leave from Spin and BODYPUMP might have been a little early, until very recently. My body is so thankful, and I know it will be ready to get back into it after little miss is here.

Yoga. I just feel heavy and awkward. Many of my favorite poses will need to resurrected later this fall. Just not happening right now.

Gearing up for birth!

Physically, I feel as prepared as I could be for the unknown to come. Mentally, I really need to focus and relax as much as possible. Iโ€™ve done this before, but I know baby #2โ€™s birth story will be an entirely different and magical event. I need to work on the mental aspect more than anything. The point has finally hit me where Iโ€™m like, โ€œOh yeah. This baby has to come out somehow.โ€ Itโ€™s fearful when that happens haha.

xoxo

I would love to hear how you’re mentally preparing- that’s something I’m not sure I could ever be fully prepared for!

I’m itching to know baby sister’s name!! Will you be throwing out some hints as you did with Olivia?

You’re in the home stretch!! I can’t wait for your post about abs during pregnancy. I am clueless and have been doing so, so many planks, and know I need to branch out and find some other exercises too.

I’m still doing yoga at 36 weeks, but I have to modify like crazy. And runner’s lunge is becoming a little uncomfortable. And walking. Always with the walking.

32 weeks here and have found that strength training, walking on a flat, hard surface, and the recumbent bike are pretty much my only workout friends left. ๐Ÿ™ It was an amazing 85 degrees here on the Oregon coast the other day (that NEVER happens!) and I took a beach walk. I guess the unstable surface of sand was just too much for my pelvis bc I was hobbling around like an old lady for the rest of the evening! Thanks for sharing your workouts! It’s been fun to track along with you!

I have a theory (based on my ONE personal experience with water breaking) that the scene you see in the movies is the exception not the rule. Mine broke and it was like a slow trickle, not a giant gush. You’d notice it long before you got more than a little on anyone’s carpet, if mine was ‘normal’. Though I guess if somehow your cervix was way dilated and your water sack really ripped wide open, and the baby was somehow hovering over the cervix (LOL) a gush could happen. But aren’t you usually well into labor when your cervix is dilated more than a little? I don’t know! ; )

It’s so inspiring to see how active you’ve remained during your pregnancy and showing others that it’s possible. Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy and I really hope you don’t go into labour during barre ๐Ÿ˜‰ xxx
