T-Town Vacay Part Cinco

Hey everyone! Hope your day is going well ๐Ÿ˜€ Weโ€™re on the road back to Valdosta (car blogging again) and had such a wonderful time in Tucson. I told the familia that they have to come visit us next time ๐Ÿ˜‰ We shall seeโ€ฆ.

After madreโ€™s delicious feast, my nana brought out her famous Bundt cake. She made a strawberry one and piled it with fresh berries and vanilla ice cream. Even though I was stuffed beyond imagination, I had to have a couple of biteโ€™s off the pilotโ€™s plate because nanaโ€™s cakes are amazing.

022

How could you say no to that??!

Monday morning, the pilot and I woke up extra early and picked up my little bro to go to Sabino Canyon.

I canโ€™t go to Tucson without visiting Sabino.. itโ€™s probably one of my favorite places and the views are exquisite

024

Little bro and the pilot:

025

We even saw a family of deer!!!

This is the baby:

027

The canyon:

028

We walked 4 beautiful and insanely hot miles. I prefer to run the canyon, but we were so tired (and it was SO HOT!) that we just walked. It was a lovely morning ๐Ÿ˜€

Last trip to Sabino Cayon: here

After Sabino Canyon, the family went to The Delicious Egg for breakfast while I went to the dentist to get my teeth scraped and prodded. Lucky me ๐Ÿ˜‰ We did some last-minute shopping, packed, said our good-byes to my great grandparents.

For lunch, I made an awesome salad beast at the madreโ€™s with organic romaine, tomato, avocado, grilled peppers and onions, raw Mexican flax crackers, lime juice, garlic and sea salt.

002

It was pretty much amazing.

We took naps since our flight into JAX was a red-eye โ€“it left at 11:15pm from Phoenix- then got on the road to the airport. On the way there, we went to a Tucson carnivore hot spot: Guero Canelo. Guero Canelo is famous for their hot dogs, which are wrapped in bacon and topped with cheese, beans, guacamole, salsa, whatever you like.

It was the pilotโ€™s first time:

003

He loved it! We also dared my brother to eat an entire super hot jalapeno pepper with the seeds and he did it. When I asked him how his stomach was later on, he responded โ€œdo you ask Mohammed Ali how his hands are after a fight?โ€ Hahaha.

Since there wasnโ€™t anything I wanted for dinner at Guero Canelo (besides the hot salsa I ate straight up and some grilled jalapenos), we stopped at Chipotle for my dinner.

I got my usual vegetarian burrito bowl with lettuce instead of rice and had been wanting to get double guacamole GC style. When I asked the girl for double guacamole, she looked at me like I was insane, and then overzealously plopped a mountain of guacamole onto my burrito bowl.

004

It was a little much, but of course I managed ๐Ÿ˜‰

005

Itโ€™s been about 14 hours since I devoured that, and I still feel full, acidic and bloated. Gorgeous. It was delicious though.

Iโ€™m so glad we got to spend a long weekend at home. I miss my family and friends like crazy while weโ€™re in V-town and have to make periodic trips to see everyone so the homesickness doesnโ€™t get outta hand. Like you guys said, Iโ€™m extremely fortunate to have a family that supports my healthy lifestyle. Even though I eat very differently than most of them, they always have food I can eat (the madre and nana stocked up on Ezekiel, almond butter, Larabars, salad, fruits, veggies and Spry gum before I got there!) and no one gives me a hard time when I want to take an aerobics class or go for a run. Iโ€™m a lucky girl ๐Ÿ˜€

Weโ€™re a little zombie-like after the red eye flight, but after a nap and a workout I should be back to my normal. Iโ€™m hoping to return to my irregular scheduled blogging by tonight ๐Ÿ˜€
Have a great day, bloggies!

Much love,

Gina

    "Full, acidic, and bloated"

What a fantastic description of how I feel sometimes – especially after a fruit binge!

Sabino Canyon is so pretty! That pic of your little bro & Pilot is so cute… makes me laugh b/c I call my brother "lil bro" as well, but I'm pretty sure he's as tall as me now!

Your pups are probably thrilled to have you home!

Hi! I just wanted to tell you that I recently ran across you blog and love, love, LOVE it! I am really inspired and encouraged by your level of fitness and nutrition. As someone who also lost quite a bit of weight, it is great to see someone who keeps things in balance (I tend to have trouble with this!). I also have my own pilot at home:), so I can relate to that as well! We are based on the ND tundra though (bleh), so I am actually envious that you are in V-town! I have to drive 8 hours to get to a Whole Foods or TJs! Anyway, thank you for sharing your tips and your stories!

  8. Erin on August 11, 2009 at 4:44 pm

Glad you had fun with the family. I go through withdrawal if I don't get to see my family regularly too!

im glad you commented on how your family views your "healthy lifestyle" because while reading you recap I was wondering if they were giving you a hard time for going to chipotle instead or not eating the entire cake your grandmom make, etc. that would irk me very much if my family made a fuss about stuff like that. im glad yours are cool with it and even go out of their to make you feel more at home by making you specialy prepared food and stocking up on essentails. your family rocks

  13. shelby on August 11, 2009 at 5:34 pm

I went to Chipotle on Saturday and the guy making my salad looked at me the same way! He was like MORE guac?! Yes sir!

  14. Adriana on August 11, 2009 at 5:47 pm

OK, but HOW do you manage to sneak in said popcorn to the movies? I find even a small bag is pretty noticeable.

  15. vegetarianontherun on August 11, 2009 at 6:15 pm

    Hi there!!
I'm curious. I'm very health conscious, like yourself. As I'm sure you've experienced, people can be very judgmental of that lifestyle due to their own insecurities or whatever it is. When you started dating the pilot, how did you address the subject of your healthy eating habits since guys obviously aren't as concerned with this as we are?

    Thanks!

  18. Caitlin on August 11, 2009 at 7:13 pm

    love your tip!

  19. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) on August 11, 2009 at 7:19 pm

The raw Mexican flax crackers look awesome. I take it they're not Mary's Crack and not homemade in a dehydrator (unless you really planned ahead and brought some with)…brand/info please! Great job on getting your tip published in Glamour, that's big girl! And the hike looks lovely, too.

  20. Sana on August 11, 2009 at 8:21 pm

I was in Tucson last month and adored Sabino also. I remember sitting there thinking I don't know of another city I've visited with such natural beauty surrounding it. Stunning ๐Ÿ™‚
