The best part about consistency
I am partnering with the Invisalignยฎ brand, but all opinions expressed are my own. Full disclosure.
My top fitness tip of all time is the importance of consistency, which personally took me a while to learn. Flashback to the days where Iโd wander around the gym with a bewildered look on my face, do a few biceps curls, and leave out of sheer intimidation. I would start crazy diets and burn out. Iโd temporarily commit to intense fitness regimens and the โLetโs skip โtil tomorrowโ excuses would begin. And finally, after lots of experimentation and discovering what I truly love, it became really easy to stick with it over the long haul. Not only did I enjoy it, but I started to see the cascade of benefits: increased energy, clearer skin, better sleep, and lean muscle. I was hooked. A fitness ball in motion stays in motion, so I always tell my clients to stick with it and do what they can each day, even if itโs just a little bit.

The theme of consistency is so important in the health and fitness world. While we all have our unique goals across the spectrum (lose weight, increase lean muscle, a shiny new race PR, a fitness competition, healing an injury, etc), I think that many of us have the same end goal: to live a long and healthy life. When you are consistently active, youโre working towards keeping your body a well-oiled machine that will hopefully last a little longer. ๐
The same goes for other positive health habits, including dental hygiene. Back in the day, I wasnโt exactly a flossing champ (which is funny now because it feels SO good!). As a result, I had to get some cavities filled. Later on, I learned that my shifted teeth had caused some crowding, which can make cleaning and flossing more difficult and less effective.
This is something that Iโve noticed about my Invisalignยฎ treatment: itโs much easier to floss! Because thereโs actually a little space between my straightened teeth, flossing, brushing and water pik-ing seem to be much easier. During treatment, to make room for the teeth to shift, sometimes theyโre slightly filed down. At first, this freaked me out a little, but itโs totally painless and takes 2 seconds. Since I had some of my lower teeth filed to adjust for the shifting teeth, instead of breaking floss in my mouth, it goes through easily now.
October is National Orthodontic Health month, and an awesome reminder to take care of your chompers. With my Invisalign clear aligners, I feel like I can properly clean everything because the aligners are easily removed. They can also have a positive impact on confidence, which can translate to taking care of yourself in other areas, too.
I canโt believe I only have 4 months left of treatment! This is me rejoicing, since my first round of traditional braces was 5 YEARS. 5 years of metal mouth.

I would love to do Invisalign some day!
you would love it!
I love how if it’s something you love consistency naturally happens, this is very true for me with my eating habits and exercise. I just love eating healthfully and exercising for the overall benefits!
so true! if you enjoy it, it’s so much easier to stick with it
I am also doing Invisalign! Are you using the OrthoPulse? (it’s this little device you put in your mouth for 10 minutes a day and it sends light energy into the roots of your teeth). I’m using it and it’s supposed to speed up the process… I started in May and I should be done in May next year! I never had braces, and although my teeth really aren’t that bad (crowding in my lower), I have always been really jealous of people with perfectly straight teeth. I cannot WAIT to finally have that!
that is awesome! no. i thought about it, but decided not to. so happy you’re enjoying it!
Its so true. I’m just starting to get better with consistency in general.
it all adds up ๐
I always encourage my challengers to choose a routine which they can actually DO, day in and day out. What you said above is so true… it’s easy to be gung ho at the beginning, then fall into the “I’ll just skip today” trap.
totally! i think it’s important to make changes you’d want to keep for the long haul
I am doing invisalign! My original course was 28 weeks which I just recently finished, and now I’m doing 15 weeks of “refinement” trays. I never had braces as a child, and was VERY insecure about my crooked front teeth. Even before my treatment is entirely complete, I have so much more confidence in my smile!! I will say I was a little surprised at how painful the process could be, but it’s worth it in the long run. Oh and my invisalign treatments have made me a flossing and brushing freak, haha!
that is so awesome!! i haven’t found it to be too painful, but i’m *used* to braces so it’s not bad at all. totally agree about becoming a brushing and flossing freak ๐
Super interesting! Thanks for sharing your experience.
Sticking with something DEFINITELY makes a difference. Something I’m trying to remember ๐
Hi Gina! Out of curiosity, do you use fluoride free toothpaste for a reason?
hi!
yes, here’s an article with some good references at the end: http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2013/04/30/water-fluoridation-facts.aspx
I did 24 trays of Invisalign and still have a little straightening to go. My friend warned me, it’s not over til it’s over. I got my teeth re-imaged again last week and find out how many trays for round 2. Should be 5 or 6 trays according to my dentist but we shall see.
It is still better than several years of metal braces so I’ll take it!
Totally agree with you about consistency…I think it’s kind of the key to EVERYTHING! Anyway– I tried invisalign but didn’t stick with it long enough and I’ve always been so disappointing that I didn’t see it all the way through. How stupid of me! Now, I’m saving up the $$ to do it all over and and be CONSISTENT with it this time. Haha.
