Blame it on the moon

Helloooooo 😀 How are ya? It was comforting to hear that I’m not the only emotional post-workout girl out there!

It was also really interesting to read Averie’s comment about the full moon…

I blame nature. Haha.

nightmare-before-christmas-moon

So I had another real dinner last night!

Except for this one was coated in a blanket of melted Daiya 😉

cheesy

After reading Gena’s post about veggie gratin, the weirdest thing happened: I actually wanted veggies again! (ok, I really wanted melted Daiya, but we can pretend)

I followed her recipe and enjoyed it along with a salad, topped with my new fave dressing:

dressing

SO good 🙂

After dinner, I started a new book- a friend of mine recommended the author Martha Beck to me, while we were talking about inspirational stuff (and how we both love motivational/inspirational reads).

kindle

The book is called “Finding Your Own North Star: Claiming the Life You Were Meant to Live”

I’m am 100% sucked in already, and wishing I would have read it a little over 3 years ago before starting the blog. I had just quit my miserable job as an area sales manager, had a finance degree I wasn’t using (and couldn’t get a job, despite my educational background and credentials), and found myself at a serious crossroads. The Pilot was gone a lot (which became a way of life) and I was pretty miserable as I was trying to figure out my niche and what I would make of myself.

I was so fortunate to become involved in the health and fitness industry and eventually start the blog, which is hands down, my true passion. Eventually this little hobby became my full-time job and I know it’s what I’m supposed to do, especially since I enjoy it so much 🙂

That being said, I really think that this book will help with the “what’s next?” stage. I plan on blogging forever (you’ll have to work really hard to get rid of me, haha) but like to think that the blog is a jumping off point for something else, too 🙂

Do you read inspirational/motivational books? What are you reading right now?

I’m off to teach! See ya later, friends <3

xoxo

OK I need to get that book! Sounds like something I could really use and something I’d enjoy. I love Martha Beck — when I was losing some weight a few years ago I read her “4 Day Win” book and that really helped me get my head in the right place.

Hey Gina! I got my first bag of Sun Warrior from the last OpenSky promo and I am HOOKED! Thanks to you, I am now a Sun Warrior-amaze ball-cookie dough cereal addict! 😀

That’s really interesting about the full moon; I’d love to learn more about it.

I usually don’t read motivational books, but I’ve been wanting to recently. Any recommendations? 😀

Well I think it’s excellent that you’re so in touch with the universe Gina!! 🙂 That was really interesting to read about the full moon – I had no idea. I absolutely LOVE motivating books and am looking into purchasing one of Brian Tracy’s audiobooks. Martha Beck writes a lot for Oprah Magazine and Oprah.com doesn’t she? I’d love to read the book you’re on now… might see if iTunes has an audiobook version!

    • Fitnessista on May 17, 2011 at 12:30 pm

definitely get the psychology of achievement by brian tracy- my fave!

  7. Val @ Balancing Val on May 17, 2011 at 9:33 am

Just looked up the reviews on that book.

Im a little obsessed with the whole idea of our essential selves lately and this would be perfect as my next read!

Is it like anything like a workbook though?

    • Fitnessista on May 17, 2011 at 12:29 pm

from what i can tell so far, no

  8. Michelle (your girlfriend for fitness) on May 17, 2011 at 9:42 am

Hmmm, sounds like a book I can definitely benefit from. I am always nervous of buying books like that unless someone recommends them.

I think the full moon explanation is very interesting. I can absolutely believe it.

  9. Jackie on May 17, 2011 at 9:49 am

when I used to work in the hospital, we could always tell when it was a full moon. Our patients were either acting extra crazy or the organization of my unit was always out of whack in some way. Without fail, the full moon made for interesting times.

also- I have a nearly empty bottle of that salad dressing. love it.

  10. jenna on May 17, 2011 at 9:53 am

Averies response does make alot of sense! crazy how everything works together… it’s all a big cycle.

  11. Allison @ Food For Healing on May 17, 2011 at 9:54 am

the full moon thing makes total sense, and the fact that when you are exercising and doing yoga you are releasing tension and blockages. Crazy things can happen.
I’m mostly reading school books lately, ive got the China study on the go, as well as Omnivores Dilemma. Nothing “motivational” per-say, but i think its up the same alley.

  12. Gina @Running to the Kitchen on May 17, 2011 at 9:56 am

That book sounds like a read for me right now. Thanks for the heads up!
I just finished The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks which I can’t recommend enough. Super interesting. I usually don’t dig non-ficiton but this one was great.
Now I’m reading The New Rules of Lifting for Women based off a few bloggers recent recommendations.

Your protein pancakes look so much better than mine! Your’s look thick and doughy, while mine were thin and wimpy. They still tasted good but I obviously need to try your version.

  19. Laura on May 17, 2011 at 10:29 am

LOVED reading Averie’s input! It’s so awesome how we can constantly learn from each other. 🙂

Thanks for the Martha Beck book rec! I’ve read her columns in O Magazine and find her truly inspirational, but for some reason have never thought about reading any of her books. Go figure.

Enjoy your day! Happy that your pilot will be home soon. 😀

“I plan on blogging forever (you’ll have to work really hard to get rid of me, haha) but like to think that the blog is a jumping off point for something else, too :)”—

—THAT is how I feel about blogging, too. I’ve recently had some cool doors open b/c of blogging but I feel like there is something else, more, in addition to blogging that I will be doing, or could be doing. I just have NO IDEA what that is yet. At all. I wish I had a crystal ball. Then again, exploring life and just letting it all unfold is the best way, right? 🙂

I can’t wait to see what YOU do, become, achieve, accomplish b/c yes, you’re blog and the success you’ve created here is just the tip of the iceberg!

Ack! I almost jumped through the screen when I read about what you’re reading – I love Martha Beck and actually went through her coach training program two years ago, and she is baller. In fact, just last Friday we had a quarterly coaches call with her and she just continues to be absolutely inspiring and amazing. I would also suggest the follow up to North Star, which is called Steering By Starlight. She is AMAZING and basically healed herself from fibromyalgia by following her heart (or her north star) and doing what she’s supposed to be doing. In fact, I’ve been doing quite a bit of thinking and am considering re-reading her stuff because I can tell I need to take things in another direction again…anyways, enjoy the read!

    • Fitnessista on May 17, 2011 at 12:27 pm

i recently saw a pack on someone else’s blog but have no clue where they got it :/

  28. Kilee on May 17, 2011 at 10:55 am

That makes sense about the full moon. I can usually tell in a difference in people’s behavior around the full moon. Hopefully you had a good emotional recharge and are feeling great now 🙂

Inspirational books are one of my favorite reads. Recently I have read: “Life Shift” by Aleta St. James (loved this one!) “Add More ~Ing to Your Life” by Gabrielle Bernstein (This was was okay, but I liked how it focused on young women) and currently I’m reading “Anatomy of the Spirit” by Caroine Myss (Very interesting but a bit denser, so I have to really focus while I read it.)

I love Martha Beck’s column in Oprah. I actually think Oprah’s mag is very inspirational and motivating too. I just got the new issue and plan on reading it tonight. Have a great day and can’t wait to see what’s up next!

Just bought that book for my kindle. I work in finance, and I hate every second of it. I just can’t get myself worked up over this company when I don’t support the way they run it and the way they treat employees. My only problem is having no clue what direction I want to go next, so hopefully this book will help. Thanks for the recommendation!

  38. Vanessa @ Swift as Shadows on May 17, 2011 at 11:30 am

I just started Quitter by Jon Acuff. It’s REALLY good so far, and delves into how to close the gap between your day job and your dream job. I just started my little blog, and am at the point where even one comment excites me — and I never want to stop relishing those small victories. I hope to make writing a career (most likely in the form of blogging), but am still trying to find my niche. All in good time. =)

BTW, that’s so interesting about the full moon. The skeptic in me says, “yeah right,” but the “Pseudo-yogi/nature loving” part of is totally on board with the connection between nature and energy/emotions. Pretty cool. =)

Right now I am reading novels.. nothing inspirational..but I like to read memoirs a lot too. I am just getting into Bitter is the New Black… only like 10 pages in. It is quite witty and I look forward to reading more,.

  40. Leanne (Bride to Mrs.) on May 17, 2011 at 11:45 am

I love inspirational/self-help books. I think we are always moving forwards or backwards… never stagnant… so I always want to better myself & learn new things about myself.

A book I recently read and loved was “the mastery of love” by Don Miguel Ruiz. I re-read chapters over and over… it’s awesome 🙂

Another awesome book is “Burnt toast” by Teri Hatcher… it has great lessons in it and I’ve re-read that book many times as well.

  41. Amanda on May 17, 2011 at 11:50 am

I bought the vanilla SunWarrior from one of your previous promos… I found it pretty chalky in smoothies, but fabulous in making so many other things (hello protein pancakes and Deb’s protein muffins! My world = rocked). Just curious, though, have you had the chocolate one? I’ve never seen it mentioned on your blog (at least not within the past year-ish), and all your protein recipes call for vanilla (and I’m way too big of a wimp to make my own chocolate-based recipes! other than smoothies, of course).
Thoughts? Should I just stick with what I know n like? How’s the chocolate?

    • Fitnessista on May 17, 2011 at 12:23 pm

yup i’ve had the chocolate and love it- vanilla wins though 🙂 i figure if i want chocolate, i add cacao powder to the recipe

  42. Stephanie @ Life, Love & Inspiration on May 17, 2011 at 11:55 am

The full moon thing makes total sense–seeing patients when there’s a full moon always results in the craziest days…and people!

A motivational book I like is “The Magic of Thinking Big” by David Schwartz. It was published in 1959, so some of the examples are a little irrelevant (especially the ones about women), but it has some real gems in it!

I think I definitely need to read that book! I am at that crossroads in my life now. I am so unsatisfied with my job and I just want to do what I enjoy! I know it’s time for me to make the change in my life, but it’s scary! I have just gone to part-time at my job and I’m hoping to make that eventually no-time! I have a bio degree (which equals no jobs in my part of the world) and I just don’t know which way I’m heading! The 20’s are a stressful (and awesome!) decade! Ugh!

Tell us more about how you found the courage to make the switch into something you love doing please 🙂 It seems like every. single. young. woman. goes through this. When it happened to me, I felt really alone, and really pressured not to get out of the legal field by people who meant well, even though it was killing me!

  48. Jennifer on May 17, 2011 at 12:17 pm

Sounds like a book I should read for my husband and I. We have our Bachelor’s and I’m substitute teaching and having a hard time finding/getting a job and my husband had a job in his field but then they fired him out of nowhere and their reason was he wasn’t “seasoned enough”. Doesn’t make any sense at all considering how he got the job and just 2 weeks prior he was approved for a raise. Now he is stuck doing retail again and nothing with his degree. Hopefully it will turn around soon.
I also really love reading the Chicken Soup for the Soul books. I have read many of them through the various stages of my life and I have lots more to read that are still on my list. 🙂
