Half marathon news + a Garmin giveaway-ENDED

Thank you so much for those of you who entered the giveaway! It has ended as of 4/5 12:48am.

HUGE congrats to the lucky winner, Morgan, who said:

I love 10Ks too! Just enough to get the endorphins going, but not too much that your legs are completely screaming the next day. ;) (Just loudly complaining.)

Stay tuned for more giveaways in the near future <3 xoxo

For a while there, I was doing ok with the half marathon distance. I was running consistently, even pushing the jogging stroller for a few long runs, feeling great, wanted to keep running/racing, and then the cold weather hit. You might have remembered the Tucson snow (!) and nothing about that made me want to run outside.

Snow 1 of 1

(I guess if you really want it and live in a freezing climate, you just suck it up and do it, but I guess I didn’t want it that badly.)

Since then, I haven’t had much motivation. I’ve gone back to my nighttime workout ways, and have been doing HIIT intervals indoors even though the weather has been so beautiful. I need to enjoy it before it’s back to 6am training run time.

Yup. “Training run.”

I’m running another half marathon, but here’s the kicker: I’m actually going to train for it.

Garmin2

[Scared bird face. You’re welcome, haha.]

For the past two races, my training was really sporadic (some times I went a few weeks in between running at all) and even with the fact that I felt ready, the races were rough, and I didn’t run as well as I’d anticipated. This time, I’m ready to be more consistent and emphasize strength training. At that time, I wasn’t consistent with strength training, which likely had a negative impact on my runs.

The race deets:

I’ll be running the Women’s Running Series Half Marathon in Tempe/Scottsdale in November.

Use the discount code “FITAZGINA” to get $10 off your registration until November 3 if you’d like to run with me!

Garmin

Here’s my plan:

-one long run a week (anything more than that, and I could overtrain with my teaching schedule) building on mileage (Sunday or Monday)

-one short run each week (Tuesday or Thursday)

-consistent strength training. I aim for 3 sessions each week, even though, realistically, I’m happy if I get two

For my training, I’ll also be using my Garmin Forerunner 10 to track distance. I love my Forerunner so much -super light and compact compared to the 305- and was so stoked when Garmin asked if I’d like to do a giveaway.

One lucky winner will receive the new Forerunner 10 in the just-released gorgeous purple color!

Garmin 1 of 1

You have two ways to enter:

1) Leave a comment and tell me your favorite running distance. I love 10ks but feel like there are less and less of them lately. Non runners: what’s your favorite outdoor workout?

2) Tweet, “I want to win a Garmin from @fitnessista #beamazing #lovemygarmin” and leave an extra comment to let me know you tweeted!

I’ll pick the winner tomorrow (4/4 at midnight EST).

Ready, set, go!

xoxo

I like 5Ks and 10Ks! I run several times a week and I’ve been wanting a Garmin for a long time but just can’t afford one on my student budget. From what I’ve heard, they definitely change the way you run!

  2. @loosing_it on April 3, 2013 at 11:42 am

I totally just tweeted. Thanks for the great giveaway!

  3. jackie7288 on April 3, 2013 at 11:43 am

My favorite distance for races is 10K. Since re-injuring my back last year, I’ve been avoiding anything longer. At some point, I want to train for a half marathon 🙂

Anyone doing the More/Fitness Half next weekend?! I’ll be at the expo working at the Erica Sara Designs booth who has designed the official race necklace this year! Check it out here: http://www.ericasaradesigns.com/more-fitness-half-marathon-necklace/

  4. Courtney on April 3, 2013 at 11:43 am

Ahh I live in Tempe and just said yesterday how I need to find a half to run! My current favorite distance is 5ks because I’ve placed in the last few I’ve run. I do love the challenge of a full marathon though!

My goal is to run a half marathon, but I have a feeling once I run one I’ll get super addicted to it! I don’t see myself becoming a long distance runner, I think I would get bored and give up.

I’m studying to take the CPA test this year, so I don’t have the extra time to train for a marathon, but hopefully I will next year.

    Good luck on your training!

  7. Jenn on April 3, 2013 at 11:43 am

The 5k was my first race and has always been my favorite.

  8. Becca on April 3, 2013 at 11:43 am

The perfect distance for me is somewhere between 5 and 6 miles. I’ve ran 5k’s and Half’s but never a 10K. I always feel the best after running 5-6 (not too much, but not too little)!

  9. Heather F. on April 3, 2013 at 11:43 am

I love the 5K. It is easy to prepare for and gives you a quick workout. I also love taking long walks with friends, so it doesnt matter what your endurance level is everyone can join!

  10. Sarah L. on April 3, 2013 at 11:44 am

I love the 1/2 distance, I feel as though I can really push my mental abilities the last few miles. Its a great distance, if you’ve trained properly for it!

  11. roopa on April 3, 2013 at 11:44 am

    Marathons…

  13. Stacy W on April 3, 2013 at 11:44 am

I have grown very fond of the half marathon! The training for the half is a great challenge for me! I hope to some day be able to do a marathon!

  14. Miranda on April 3, 2013 at 11:45 am

I am doing my first 5K this summer and just started training yesterday!

  15. Kim on April 3, 2013 at 11:45 am

My favorite is probably a 5k…I ran a half marathon last year and my poor hips hurt so badly for like 4 days lol. I guess I didn’t train like I should have either, oops. I’ve been wanting a Garmin for ever, and purple is my favorite color!

  16. Becca on April 3, 2013 at 11:45 am

I am with you on my love of 10K’s!! …but not in the snow 🙂

  18. Brandi on April 3, 2013 at 11:45 am

    I’m a 5K girl training for a 10K!!

  19. Emily H on April 3, 2013 at 11:45 am

I’m a 5K kind of girl! I love this time of year when there are tons of 5K options to participate in. The fact that they’re usually for a good cause is always extra motivation!

  20. Sarah on April 3, 2013 at 11:45 am

Love 10 milers! Something about the extra 3.1 is no bueno

  21. Lizzie on April 3, 2013 at 11:46 am

I’ve had a love/hate relationship with running for many years…I have bad knees and running seems to make them, well, worse. So recently I have fallen in love with powerwalking. The weather in Chicago has *finally* started to get a little bit warmer, so I will walk home from work along the lake (3.6 miles) or walk to my grad school class (2.5 miles). I already feel fitter!

  22. Tory on April 3, 2013 at 11:46 am

After running cross country during high school I still love 5ks. Short and sweet and so exciting to watch.

  23. Carly on April 3, 2013 at 11:46 am

Maybe some day I’ll push myself to do a half marathon but for now its 10k all the way!

  24. Sam on April 3, 2013 at 11:46 am

I just started running and a 5k still seems so ominous!! Slowly but surely I am getting there!

  25. Anna on April 3, 2013 at 11:46 am

Right now 5k but I’m working towards 10K:)

  26. Jamie on April 3, 2013 at 11:46 am

I think 10ks are my favorite – at least, they are the distance I race most frequently. I’m contemplating signing up for a marathon in October, and the Garmin would be a huge motivator to get my outside during the cold winter months down here in the southern hemisphere.

  27. Kim on April 3, 2013 at 11:47 am

    I tweeted!!

  28. Lauren P on April 3, 2013 at 11:48 am

I love the half marathon distance – it’s challenging, but very doable & FUN! My Garmin crapped out a few months ago, so I would love to win a new one!

  29. Lisa on April 3, 2013 at 11:48 am

As far as outdoor activities go, I absolutely love hiking and taking long walks outside.

  30. Vidya on April 3, 2013 at 11:48 am

The only one I’ve run so far is 5K. I really feel like I am enjoying it and pushing through and feeling great!….but when those photographers take pics of us runners and put it up online, let us just say I look the exact opposite of what I am feeling (in pain!!) – how embarrassing!! 😛 How I love the 5K !!!

  31. Caroline on April 3, 2013 at 11:48 am

I love running 5k, but I really enjoy a 10k every so often to give me a challenge. Good luck on your half marathon training!! You may have just motivated me to start training for a half now too! 🙂

  32. Kaitlyn @ Keeping up with Kaitlyn on April 3, 2013 at 11:49 am

I’m just getting back into running now. I have a love/hate relationship with it, so I’ve never done more than a 5k. i hope to work my way up to a half marathon eventually.

  33. Dani on April 3, 2013 at 11:49 am

    I love 5ks!

  34. Jessica on April 3, 2013 at 11:49 am

I started running a couple years ago after losing some weight. 5Ks are typically for me and I’ve done a couple of 10Ks. Some day a half marathon will happen….some day….

  35. Ashley @Perfectleypeared on April 3, 2013 at 11:49 am

I would definitely say a 10K is more my favorite distance, but I can’t help but love a half marathon. It’s funny for me to say that because I used to run sprint distances in high school for track and couldn’t fathom anything longer than a mile. I love it now. Good luck training! 🙂

  36. Cristy Foreman on April 3, 2013 at 11:49 am

I have run 3 half marathons now, but never a 5K. I do not have a lot of motivation to pay for a race that is typically the distance I run 3x/week. I would say the best distance is 10K or 15K because you can run it even it if you haven’t been doing a lot of longer runs. I have no desire to do 26.2 – those people are crazy!

  37. Anna on April 3, 2013 at 11:49 am

I love running 3 to 5 miles. It depends on time and how I’m feeling that day but I love working up a good sweat. P.S. You have the BEST giveaways. I’ve been wanting a Garmin forever! **fingers crossed**

  38. Amanda on April 3, 2013 at 11:49 am

I do love running 10ks, but my favorite races tend to be 5ks because I can convince more people to run them with me! And they are often more focused on fun than competition, which suits me a lot better 🙂

  39. Cristy on April 3, 2013 at 11:50 am

  40. Alaina T on April 3, 2013 at 11:50 am

I’ve never ran a marathon (even though it’s an aspiration- hopefully this year!). Although, when I do run, I aim for 5k, and preferably trail running. It’s the perfect distance for me to really get in some great cardio and endurance. Really, my favorite outdoor activity is rock climbing. My husband and I are looking forward to introducing our 5 year old to it this summer! Yay for family climbing trips! 🙂

  41. Heather (Heather's Dish) on April 3, 2013 at 11:50 am

I can’t really run anymore, but hiking is probably my favorite form of exercise EVER! Luckily we live super close to a lot of really great trails!

  42. Mollie K on April 3, 2013 at 11:50 am

I’d have to go with a 5k as my favorite race distance but sprints outside on a nice day is the best!

  43. Haley Tuthill on April 3, 2013 at 11:50 am

5Ks for me. Hopefully a half in the near future.

  44. Haley Tuthill on April 3, 2013 at 11:50 am

5Ks for me. Hopefully a half in the near future.

  45. victoria on April 3, 2013 at 11:50 am

I am just getting started (again)! I was able to finally do a 5k when my brain checked out and I just stopped. So I changed my thinking and I recently started again. This time it will hopefully stick. So starting with getting to 5k and go from there. I would love to win to help my motivation!

  46. Jessica on April 3, 2013 at 11:51 am

I started running a couple years ago after losing some weight. Mainly 5Ks and a couple of 10Ks. A half marathon will be in my future…someday….

  47. Kath on April 3, 2013 at 11:51 am

I am a beginner, so my favorite for now is probably just a 5K, but I would love to work up to a 10k or half. My favorite outdoor workout at this time is LONG walks with my dog (a King Charles!) I think a fun tool like this could be great motivation to keep me running! Thanks for the opportunity!

  48. Elizabeth on April 3, 2013 at 11:51 am

I love running 5k’s. I’m new to running but I would like to work up to a half marathon.

  49. Abby on April 3, 2013 at 11:51 am

My favorite distance is the half! And I’m running one in May. I like the distance because you really feel like you accomplished something after doing it but training for it doesn’t take over your life the way it does when you run a marathon. Good luck with training! And I NEEEEEEED that purple Garmin!
