Half marathon news + a Garmin giveaway-ENDED

Thank you so much for those of you who entered the giveaway! It has ended as of 4/5 12:48am.

HUGE congrats to the lucky winner, Morgan, who said:

I love 10Ks too! Just enough to get the endorphins going, but not too much that your legs are completely screaming the next day. ;) (Just loudly complaining.)

Stay tuned for more giveaways in the near future <3 xoxo

For a while there, I was doing ok with the half marathon distance. I was running consistently, even pushing the jogging stroller for a few long runs, feeling great, wanted to keep running/racing, and then the cold weather hit. You might have remembered the Tucson snow (!) and nothing about that made me want to run outside.

Snow 1 of 1

(I guess if you really want it and live in a freezing climate, you just suck it up and do it, but I guess I didn’t want it that badly.)

Since then, I haven’t had much motivation. I’ve gone back to my nighttime workout ways, and have been doing HIIT intervals indoors even though the weather has been so beautiful. I need to enjoy it before it’s back to 6am training run time.

Yup. “Training run.”

I’m running another half marathon, but here’s the kicker: I’m actually going to train for it.

Garmin2

[Scared bird face. You’re welcome, haha.]

For the past two races, my training was really sporadic (some times I went a few weeks in between running at all) and even with the fact that I felt ready, the races were rough, and I didn’t run as well as I’d anticipated. This time, I’m ready to be more consistent and emphasize strength training. At that time, I wasn’t consistent with strength training, which likely had a negative impact on my runs.

The race deets:

I’ll be running the Women’s Running Series Half Marathon in Tempe/Scottsdale in November.

Use the discount code “FITAZGINA” to get $10 off your registration until November 3 if you’d like to run with me!

Garmin

Here’s my plan:

-one long run a week (anything more than that, and I could overtrain with my teaching schedule) building on mileage (Sunday or Monday)

-one short run each week (Tuesday or Thursday)

-consistent strength training. I aim for 3 sessions each week, even though, realistically, I’m happy if I get two

For my training, I’ll also be using my Garmin Forerunner 10 to track distance. I love my Forerunner so much -super light and compact compared to the 305- and was so stoked when Garmin asked if I’d like to do a giveaway.

One lucky winner will receive the new Forerunner 10 in the just-released gorgeous purple color!

Garmin 1 of 1

You have two ways to enter:

1) Leave a comment and tell me your favorite running distance. I love 10ks but feel like there are less and less of them lately. Non runners: what’s your favorite outdoor workout?

2) Tweet, “I want to win a Garmin from @fitnessista #beamazing #lovemygarmin” and leave an extra comment to let me know you tweeted!

I’ll pick the winner tomorrow (4/4 at midnight EST).

Ready, set, go!

xoxo

Gina

I agree, 10ks all the way!

  2. Ashley on April 3, 2013 at 12:02 pm

I had just begun my running journey a couple years ago and ran many shorter distances (several 5Ks, couple 10Ks) and eventually ran my first half-marathon! Then I had twins and it derailed all my running efforts! I’ve always thought that 10K would be my favorite distance – long enough to warrant “training” and short enough to also work on speed (not just distance).
I’d like to get back into the habit of running and have thought that 10Ks would probably be a nice distance to shoot for – but you’re right about them disappearing! What’s with that!?!

    I tweeted!!! 🙂

Probably 10K. I feel that distance is enough to be challenging but not to long to be intimidating. I signed up for the Fitness Half Marathon in Central Park in a few weeks, which will be the longest distance I’ve ever run so I’m kind of excited (and super freaked out!).

    • jackie7288 on April 3, 2013 at 12:07 pm

Rebecca – saw you signed up for the More/Fitness Half Marathon – good luck!! It’s an awesome race. I was actually supposed to run last year but got injured and wasn’t able to participate. If you plan on going to the expo, stop by the Erica Sara Designs booth to say hi! http://www.esddaydreams.com/2013/04/meet-team-sneak-peak.html

  6. Katherine on April 3, 2013 at 12:03 pm

12-15 km is my perfect distance. Half marathon distance is a little intense unless you’ve prepared yourself, and anything under 12 km doesn’t give me enough “me time”. And I love being able to drop everything and just go!

  7. Melissa Mann on April 3, 2013 at 12:03 pm

I’m just starting to run. Ran 3.18 miles for the first time ever last weekend. I’m planning to run a 5k with my husband in the next few months.

  8. Betsy on April 3, 2013 at 12:03 pm

10-miler is my favorite! I’m running the Nike Women’s 1/2 Marathon at the end of the month, this this Garmin would be perfect for training!

  9. Mary on April 3, 2013 at 12:03 pm

I like half marathons because the training process for it is super fun!

  10. Emily @SinfulNutrition on April 3, 2013 at 12:03 pm

Ah! I was just thinking about buying a garmin, so this came at the perfect time! I have started training for my first half marathon in October, and this would help out tremendously to help track my distance. I prefer long runs to short runs, and have come to love tackling hills! That is quite the feat for me. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you for the perfect giveaway!

  11. Lindsay @ Fit with Farrar on April 3, 2013 at 12:04 pm

I am not a runner so-to-speak, but I desperately want to be! Currently, my favorite workouts outdoors are crossfit WODs and hiking, but I have a goal of doing a 5k all running!

  12. Emily @SinfulNutrition on April 3, 2013 at 12:05 pm

Tweeted as well. Thank you : )

  13. Julie on April 3, 2013 at 12:05 pm

    I love 5Ks!

  14. Deanne on April 3, 2013 at 12:05 pm

I just started running and hope to do a 5 or 8km in May.

Besides running my husband and I do a lot of hiking. We have a large garmin with maps and trails but it’s really inconvinient when running.

  15. lindsay on April 3, 2013 at 12:05 pm

i’m still a very new runner, so i need to master a 5k first (which i will be running the pat tilman run in april). i had no idea this race existed so i may actually train to run this!!! i think a 10k would probably be a more attainable run for me though 😉

  16. janiek on April 3, 2013 at 12:05 pm

Jayyyy! another Forerunner 10 giveaway by fitnessista, yes please!
I’d love to be all cool and say my favourite distance is a marathon, but i haven’t gotten further than 5k ,but i’m working on it!

  17. Jen on April 3, 2013 at 12:05 pm

I love the 10k distance. I was “planning” to run my first half later this month, but Michigan winters ruined my training. I just couldn’t get out on days that the temps were in the teens or less. I think I’ll stick with the 10k. Forever I thought that the 5k was it for me, but it surely isn’t! Congrats on signing up for the half!

  18. Lindsay @ Fit with Farrar on April 3, 2013 at 12:06 pm

    I also tweeted!! 🙂 🙂 🙂

  19. Laura on April 3, 2013 at 12:06 pm

Just getting into running again and 10km runs are my favourite.

  20. Simone on April 3, 2013 at 12:06 pm

I love half marathons because if pushes me to get out there and train more often, with anything less I definitely have the ‘wing it’ mentality which can often leave me injured.

    I tweeted (ho_ley24)

  22. Lindsay on April 3, 2013 at 12:07 pm

The half marathon is my favorite distance….just long enough to be hard and suffer a little but not so long that you want to die. I have run that race the last 2 years…see ya there!

  23. Morgan on April 3, 2013 at 12:07 pm

So far i have only ran a 5K! This year my goal is to stack up the miles; I always plateau around the 5K point and can never seem to push the endurance or speed after that point. Although I live in NY and my goal was an April 1st start to the season this year, the weather has not been accomodating. Fingers crossed for a start any day now!

  24. Michelle on April 3, 2013 at 12:08 pm

When I run on my own (usually every other day), 3.5miles is my distance of choice. 🙂 I’m signing up for a half marathon coming October though, so plenty of time to train!

  25. Jessica on April 3, 2013 at 12:08 pm

I love a good 5 mile run! With a toddler who isn’t the biggest fan of the jogging stroller it’s the perfect distance!

  26. Karlie on April 3, 2013 at 12:08 pm

I’m with you on the 10k! My favorite distance so far. I’m beginning to train for the SeaWheez half marathon in August (my first half!) and that cute Garmin would sure be handy to have!

  27. Ryan on April 3, 2013 at 12:09 pm

I like anything under a 10k, although I think I could handle a half marathon

  28. Allison on April 3, 2013 at 12:09 pm

I’ve been training for a 10k I’m running on April 13th — so far, I like a steady 5 miler and am kind of nervous about the last 1.1 mile. I want to keep up that 5m distance after the race and training though. That’s my goal for a good workout and mind clearing. I also tweeted (@wvallijo)

  29. Lisa @ Lisa the Vegetarian on April 3, 2013 at 12:10 pm

I would love to win a Garmin! It would really give me some motivation to try running again. My favorite outdoor workout is just taking long walks around the lakes around here. I can’t wait until the weather warms up so I can do a little more than that!

  30. Nicole on April 3, 2013 at 12:10 pm

I used to love longer runs but since having a family I have been enjoying 5ks more because of the easier time commitment. I still enjoy a long run every once in awhile though!

  31. Amber on April 3, 2013 at 12:10 pm

10k is a great way for me to try and improve my time but a half marathon is a great way to push myself for distance. I’m planning to do another half in the Fall and would love a Garmin to help me out 🙂

  32. Amy on April 3, 2013 at 12:11 pm

I’m just getting into running but I hope that someday I will be able to run a half! right now running for 30 minutes without stopping is my goal (C25K) but I’m almost there!

  33. Michelle on April 3, 2013 at 12:11 pm

    Tweeted! I’m Michlle @LuckyTasteBuds! 😀

  34. Jinee on April 3, 2013 at 12:11 pm

10k is a nice length. I need to try my first half. Soon!

  35. Liz on April 3, 2013 at 12:11 pm

My favorite running distance is only 5k right now, but my goal is to do a 1/2 marathon someday. I’m definitely taking advantage of the beautiful Phoenix weather right now before its too scorching to go out after 7am!

  36. Jayhawk Jen on April 3, 2013 at 12:12 pm

I’d love a Garmin, but I’m new to running so I don’t have a favorite distance yet! 🙂

  37. Lisa Watkins on April 3, 2013 at 12:12 pm

I also love the 10k distance, but I like the challenge of the half marathon. I don’t think I’ll ever attempt a full marathon, that seems terrifying!!!!!

  38. Amy on April 3, 2013 at 12:12 pm

    I tweeted your giveaway 🙂

  39. Nicole Griffith on April 3, 2013 at 12:12 pm

Hi Gina! My favorite distance is also the 10K! I am training for the Zooma Chicago half marathon with my best friend. She lives in Chicago and I live in Denver. We text or call each other after our workouts to motivate each other. A Garmin would be a great training tool! I just started with a running group here in Denver to help me tackle the longer mileage. I am so excited that you will be setting up a training plan. I’ve wanted to incorporate more strength training into my week this sounds like a great way to do this. 🙂

  40. Heather on April 3, 2013 at 12:12 pm

My favorite outdoor workout is definitely hiking! I like 5Ks…never tried a 5K.

  41. Alison on April 3, 2013 at 12:12 pm

My fav distance I have run is a 5-mile turkey trot on thanksgiving day! It is kind of an odd distance for a race but it was perfect – not really a long one that requires a lot of training/prep but also a little more than just a 5k. I have never done a formal 10K but I would probably like it in the same way! Next up on my list is a 1/2 mar in the beginning of May so it would be stellar to have a shiny new garmin!

  42. MK on April 3, 2013 at 12:12 pm

my favorite running distance is a 5K…it’s a fun race to do with your friends and nice and short (especially good for those of us who aren’t the greatest at long distance 😉 )

  43. Jenny on April 3, 2013 at 12:13 pm

I love 10ks! Anything beyond that scares me!

  44. Carey on April 3, 2013 at 12:13 pm

I ran my first 5k last year after a surgery 8 weeks prior. I was so proud of being able to push farther than I thought I could! I was always a dancer and never a runner. I’d love to push myself further with a garmin!

  45. Kristin S. on April 3, 2013 at 12:13 pm

I just started a Walk 2 Run program put on by my local running store. My daughter and I are going to do a 5k together. I’m really looking forward to it and the garnish would really help with my training. 🙂

  46. Veronica on April 3, 2013 at 12:13 pm

Right now my favorite distance is an oddball 4 miles 🙂

Any distance is my favorite – just being outside (or on the treadmill when it’s cold) and getting in a run just lifts my spirit and makes me feel oh so good!
