Half marathon news + a Garmin giveaway-ENDED
Thank you so much for those of you who entered the giveaway! It has ended as of 4/5 12:48am.
HUGE congrats to the lucky winner, Morgan, who said:
I love 10Ks too! Just enough to get the endorphins going, but not too much that your legs are completely screaming the next day. (Just loudly complaining.) |
Stay tuned for more giveaways in the near future <3 xoxo

For a while there, I was doing ok with the half marathon distance. I was running consistently, even pushing the jogging stroller for a few long runs, feeling great, wanted to keep running/racing, and then the cold weather hit. You might have remembered the Tucson snow (!) and nothing about that made me want to run outside.
(I guess if you really want it and live in a freezing climate, you just suck it up and do it, but I guess I didn’t want it that badly.)
Since then, I haven’t had much motivation. I’ve gone back to my nighttime workout ways, and have been doing HIIT intervals indoors even though the weather has been so beautiful. I need to enjoy it before it’s back to 6am training run time.
Yup. “Training run.”
I’m running another half marathon, but here’s the kicker: I’m actually going to train for it.
[Scared bird face. You’re welcome, haha.]
For the past two races, my training was really sporadic (some times I went a few weeks in between running at all) and even with the fact that I felt ready, the races were rough, and I didn’t run as well as I’d anticipated. This time, I’m ready to be more consistent and emphasize strength training. At that time, I wasn’t consistent with strength training, which likely had a negative impact on my runs.
The race deets:
I’ll be running the Women’s Running Series Half Marathon in Tempe/Scottsdale in November.
Use the discount code “FITAZGINA” to get $10 off your registration until November 3 if you’d like to run with me!
Here’s my plan:
-one long run a week (anything more than that, and I could overtrain with my teaching schedule) building on mileage (Sunday or Monday)
-one short run each week (Tuesday or Thursday)
-consistent strength training. I aim for 3 sessions each week, even though, realistically, I’m happy if I get two
For my training, I’ll also be using my Garmin Forerunner 10 to track distance. I love my Forerunner so much -super light and compact compared to the 305- and was so stoked when Garmin asked if I’d like to do a giveaway.
One lucky winner will receive the new Forerunner 10 in the just-released gorgeous purple color!
You have two ways to enter:
1) Leave a comment and tell me your favorite running distance. I love 10ks but feel like there are less and less of them lately. Non runners: what’s your favorite outdoor workout?
2) Tweet, “I want to win a Garmin from @fitnessista #beamazing #lovemygarmin” and leave an extra comment to let me know you tweeted!
I’ll pick the winner tomorrow (4/4 at midnight EST).
Ready, set, go!
xoxo

Veteran’s Day half marathon recap
[I’m running the women’s half as part of a paid campaign with Fitfluential. I was pretty stoked to be offered the opportunity- it was a great kicker of motivation. As always, all opinions are my own.]
I used to love the 1/2 marathon distance… but two hip surgeries has made me totally appreciate a 10K!!!
We have a local 10-mile race that I love and so far that’s been my favorite racing distance. Outside of running, rock climbing and hiking are my favorite outdoor workouts!
Personally, I love the 10k as well! I think that 6.2 miles is the perfect distance and not too daunting or overwhelming. 🙂
Half marathon…long enough to be a good challenge, but not take a huge toll on your body! Training for my second one on May 26th!
I agree with 10 k. 5k are too short and a half is long, though some day I would like to check it off ,y bucket list! Good luck with training rock star! Love your blog and food ideas and Liv, well she is just a doll baby:)
I think 5 miles is a great distance for an everyday run! Also I love the color of the garmin!!
Oh my goodness! I’ve been looking into getting a Forerunner but I hadn’t seen the purple one yet – that is just too cute. I’m running my first 10K at the end of May (eep!) and if all goes well I plan to train to run a half in the fall!
Usually when I run I go for 3-4 miles, but every now and then I’ll kick it up to 5-6!
I just started running in September, but managed 8K for the first time a few weeks back and really enjoyed it. It feels long enough that I’m pushing myself and getting a proper break outdoors, but not so long that I feel guilty about skipping revision for finals…perfect! 🙂
I love 10k’s and 5k’s! I used to love half marathons but the past year or so I’ve realized it’s not natural for our bodies to run that much. I always tend to gain weight when I run half’s because I overeat! Good luck in your training!
I also love 10ks – long enough but also, short enough! 🙂
I would love this Garmin for my first half marathon at the end of this month! I love runs around the 10 mile range. I feel so great after I’m done!
I need to get back into the swing of running again – we recently moved, I need new routes, so the Garmin would be perfect to measure my distance/pace in a new place!!!
I also tweeted 🙂 🙂 must have that purple garmin! 😉
I love the half marathon. It’s a great feeling when you finish and you (usually) get a medal! I’m signed up for 4 half Mary’s this year!
I’m new to running, so 5k’s are my limit at this point.
I tweeted! @Molly_Laurel
I love purple and would be sooo excited to finally have a Garmin!
: )
Fitness Mommy, Nursing Student, and Lover of Healthy Lifestyle!
My favorite distance to run is 10 miles. Just enough distance to not have to sprint the whole thing, but not a super long distance either!
Half marathon is my favorite distance! My PR is from the recent women’s half that was here in SD in February! I was very happy with the race organization! And the medal is awesomely HUGE!
My favorite distance is half-marathon! I feel like it’s challenging, but do-able and the training makes me feel very accomplished! I am dyyyying for a Garmin Forerunner 🙂
10k’s are my favorite too and I’ve always really wanted a Garmin, awesome giveaway!!
I’m trying to get started on running so a 5k is all I can really handle right now 🙂
I’m a huge fan of walking long distances outdoors! Spring has finally sprung in my home state (well, it’s in the 40’s, hah) and I’ve been taking full advantage of getting out for 6-9 mile walks! For running, I love the five mile or 10K distance. Long enough to be serious but not so long that I get bored during training. 🙂
I also tweeted!!!
I love the 10k distance too!! But I think I like 5ks more. Short and sweet, and butt kicking! I love a good sprint more, so I guess that’s why I like shorter races!
I like 5ks, but want to try the 10k! A Garmin is a good reason to extend my distance 🙂
I love the 5k. I can run one in the morning and still have the rest of my day to accomplish other things.
And I tweeted! @samanthakaye09
I tweeted, too! @BeckAW
I love the 10K distance, although I’m very excited for my first 10-miler this weekend!
I am just starting 5K’s. Will do the color vibe this June! So excited.
I want continue increasing my distance and do a Half marathon some day!!
I love 5ks because they’re intense and over fast! It’s like a little caffeine boost.
I run, but not well. 🙂 Though I do love running when I’m in the mood for it. My favorite outdoor activity would be going for walks with my husband or my neighbor and her ~1 year old and dog. Good company 🙂

My favourite distance is the half marathon. I think it’s a great challenge, but at the same time, manageable!
My true favorite distance is a 10k because by the time I’m over it, the race is ending! I do like training for half marathons though because they are always a challenge!
i tweeted, it’s @lca218! I have just recently started running, did my 2nd 5k a few weeks ago, and am trying to work my way up to a half mile so the garmin would be really helpful!!
My favortie distance is the 10k.
check out my tweet at @DawnGuttman
I love the 10K distance, perfect combo of distance and speed! I love how lightweight this Garmin is!
I’m a huge fan of running outdoors and cannot wait for the weather to finally warm up in Chicago. I just registered for my first half-marathon coming up at the end of June and started my training late last week. In the past I’ve only done 5k’s, 8k’s and 10k’s – so the challenge of the half-marathon is exciting to me. If I had to pick a favorite distance – I’d go with the 8k. The Garmin Forerunner looks awesome, and I like the purple color!
I tweeted too!
I love 10Ks but really when my body wants to go, i let it…whether it’s a solid mile and a half or a solid 10 miles!
5K
I’ve run 10k the last 2 mornings, and I think it’s the perfect racing distance. Hoping to sign up for one soon once I get a little faster…would love a garmin to help me keep track of my times!
I am registered to run the same Women’s Half Marathon. It will be my first half. My usual sweet spot is a 5K. You should come check out the Bisbee 1000 too if it isn’t on your Arizona race radar.
We have a local 20k which is pretty popular around here. I’ve done it 4 times and finished in my best time this past June, which felt great because it was my first post-baby race after having my daughter. This year I’ve decided to run an official half marathon which happens to fall on the same weekend as the 20k so I won’t be doing that this year. But I’m super pumped about my first official 13.1 since the 20k is just 12.4. I’ve never had a Garmin before since I’ve never been willing to spend the money I guess. Thanks for the opportunity to win one! **Fingers crossed** 🙂
I am pretty new to running, and so far the longest distance I can run is a 5k, so I will go with that! It isn’t a huge amount, but as someone who has been overweight my entire life and used to do anything to get out of running the mile in gym class, it’s a big accomplishment for me. I live in New England so it has been a bit chilly for outdoor runs, but as it warns up the Garmin would be an awesome accessory to have– and it even matches my purple Asics!
During off seasons (winter months) I love 4 mile runs. During season running ( the other three) I’m a fan of seven miles.
I love 5K’s. They are quick and keep me from having to train to long.
I have been wanting a garmin watch for a long time and love the purple!
