Half marathon news + a Garmin giveaway-ENDED
Thank you so much for those of you who entered the giveaway! It has ended as of 4/5 12:48am.
HUGE congrats to the lucky winner, Morgan, who said:
I love 10Ks too! Just enough to get the endorphins going, but not too much that your legs are completely screaming the next day. (Just loudly complaining.) |
Stay tuned for more giveaways in the near future <3 xoxo

For a while there, I was doing ok with the half marathon distance. I was running consistently, even pushing the jogging stroller for a few long runs, feeling great, wanted to keep running/racing, and then the cold weather hit. You might have remembered the Tucson snow (!) and nothing about that made me want to run outside.
(I guess if you really want it and live in a freezing climate, you just suck it up and do it, but I guess I didn’t want it that badly.)
Since then, I haven’t had much motivation. I’ve gone back to my nighttime workout ways, and have been doing HIIT intervals indoors even though the weather has been so beautiful. I need to enjoy it before it’s back to 6am training run time.
Yup. “Training run.”
I’m running another half marathon, but here’s the kicker: I’m actually going to train for it.
[Scared bird face. You’re welcome, haha.]
For the past two races, my training was really sporadic (some times I went a few weeks in between running at all) and even with the fact that I felt ready, the races were rough, and I didn’t run as well as I’d anticipated. This time, I’m ready to be more consistent and emphasize strength training. At that time, I wasn’t consistent with strength training, which likely had a negative impact on my runs.
The race deets:
I’ll be running the Women’s Running Series Half Marathon in Tempe/Scottsdale in November.
Use the discount code “FITAZGINA” to get $10 off your registration until November 3 if you’d like to run with me!
Here’s my plan:
-one long run a week (anything more than that, and I could overtrain with my teaching schedule) building on mileage (Sunday or Monday)
-one short run each week (Tuesday or Thursday)
-consistent strength training. I aim for 3 sessions each week, even though, realistically, I’m happy if I get two
For my training, I’ll also be using my Garmin Forerunner 10 to track distance. I love my Forerunner so much -super light and compact compared to the 305- and was so stoked when Garmin asked if I’d like to do a giveaway.
One lucky winner will receive the new Forerunner 10 in the just-released gorgeous purple color!
You have two ways to enter:
1) Leave a comment and tell me your favorite running distance. I love 10ks but feel like there are less and less of them lately. Non runners: what’s your favorite outdoor workout?
2) Tweet, “I want to win a Garmin from @fitnessista #beamazing #lovemygarmin” and leave an extra comment to let me know you tweeted!
I’ll pick the winner tomorrow (4/4 at midnight EST).
Ready, set, go!
xoxo

[I’m running the women’s half as part of a paid campaign with Fitfluential. I was pretty stoked to be offered the opportunity- it was a great kicker of motivation. As always, all opinions are my own.]
10k or 5k. Especially love races that allow pups!
I tweeted!!!
My favorite outdoor exercise at this time is jump rope and kickboxing with my husbands weight bag. I also like to run up and down the hill across from the park as my kids play. I am excited that this weekend I will be in a 10 k race here in Charleston Sc. I havent been able to run or jogged in years. I hve lost 53 lbs since December 2012 and I am able to do those things now. Its simply amazing. 70 more lbs and I will be at goal.
A 5K is my favorite right now, but I am trying to build up endurance and do a 10K soon.
5k’s for now – I’m still in the learn to run phase doing run/walk combos. Would love to build up to a 10k or half in the future! (a garmin would help motivate!)
Favourite other outdoor workout is riding my bike to work – there is a killer 1km+ hill at the very end, and it is so satisfying to conquer that each morning to start my day! (and starting the ride home with a huge downhill is a major stress reliever!)

I prefer 5k races but longer runs, building up to race my first 10k this summer!
I also love 10ks and wish there were more of them. I’m too slow to make a 5k worthwhile, so I need a little bit of distance to level the playing field. I enjoy halfs for that reason as well. Marathons are too life-consuming.
I like to do interval running as I have a hard time with long distance runs. I prefer 5ks but I would like to challenge myself in the near future to a 10k.
I love running a 5k, but I may sign up for a half marathon to see what it’s all about. 🙂
I would have to say 10k – I always feel like i’m going to die in a 5k because I try to run faster, and running a half marathon requires a legit training plan for me.
I just bought a jogging stroller to jog with my 7 month old and would love to win one of these! And purple is my favorite color! I want to train for a half 🙂
Although I have run a half marathon, I enjoy shorter runs. I love running 5ks! There are always so many available to sign up and I can always get friends and family to join.
Since starting my FIRST half marathon training I have been liking a distance of 7-8 miles. It feels long enough to brag about yet doesn’t take me ages to recover from like anything 10 plus miles makes me feel!!!
I love running 10ks!!
I also tweeted at you!!!
I tweeted! 🙂
I love 10ks! It’s the perfect combination of endurance and speed.
I started running last year and love it! My favourite distance so far is 10k – partly because the km markers go by faster than mile markers! I’m training for the Edinburgh half marathon at the end of May but we’ve had so much ice and snow recently in sunny Scotland that I need to get my booty in gear and get back outside!
well, my first 5k is next saturday..and i’m signed up for a 10k in June (at altitude!)…so hopefully one of those two will be my favorite! 🙂
Great giveaway! I really love running about 4-4.5 miles. It’s long enough to give a sense of accomplishment without totally wearing me out!
I am running my first half marathon in July – the Napa to Sonoma Half! This would be a great tool for my training. I love running 10Ks but excited for my first half!
My favorite running distance is definitely a 10k. It takes me a while to warm up so I find that if I do anything shorter I’m just starting to get into my groove by the time the race is over! I don’t think I have ever really been consistent about training either. I bet you will be able to tell a huge difference! I wish I could run with you! We live in Seattle right now but my parents live in Scottsdale and we visit them frequently. Who knows, maybe I’ll see you there in November 🙂
10k or half marathon are my favorite distances although I haven’t done much racing in the last few years. I’m hoping to get back into it after baby #2 is born this summer. love the purple garmin!!
I think 10ks and the random-distance races like 13ks are my favorites. I’m really bad at speed so 5ks are an exercise in torture for me, and half-marathons are very tiring to train for (for me anyway). I’m planning on doing another half in the summer, though, when I have a bit more free time, so I’m excited that you’ll be doing one later this year, too! Virtual high five!
I would like to say that I “love” 5Ks, but the truth is that they still make me nervous 😉 I have recently lost 65 pounds and am doing great with fitness, but lack the confidence doing ‘group’ runs. I work for Easter Seals and we have a 5k coming up and i’d love to do that one. I think a Garmin would definitely help me with training, since I am kind of guessing at this point. But, hey, I’m just proud of myself for lacing up my gym shoes and getting out there with jog/walks for at least 30-45 minutes as part of my fitness routine 🙂
5K is my favorite distance, because I can push myself to go much faster than I would during a longer race. When I ran a half, I felt like the hardest part was the pacing.
Half Marathons are my favorite!
I love 10Ks too, but you’re right they seem to be disappearing! 🙁
i’d have to say 10k (but i’m training for my first half-marathon, so maybe that will change)!
for races, i love 13.1!
I love to run 4 miles! It is a mileage that I can consistently run for both cardio and endurance. Anything more is a strain to my legs and especially my feet! Good luck with the half marathon!
My favourite running distance for training is 5K’s, I like to say I eat 5K’s for breakfast!
But for real races; I like half marathons, I’m only half crazy 😛
5 miles is my favourite distance… not as intimidating as a half marathon… but longer than 5K 🙂
I am training for the Seattle Rock n Roll half marathon and a Garmin would be soooo cherished 🙂
I also tweeted! 🙂
@AllisonWillTri
I’m not a runner but I’m trying to get into it! The Garmin would definitely help with training. So far I’ve only run one 5K but would like to do more!
My favorite running distance is probably a half marathon because it feels like an accomplishment but I don’t have to make running my second full time job just to train.
I love 8 miles; challenging but still finished in a little over an hour!
I am training for a half marathon, so 10k runs have become my bread’n’buttah, but I LOVE the feeling of running with a huge crowd during a half marathon, hearing the crowd – addicted 😉
I look forward to reading all about your training 🙂
I love a good 10k, the perfect distance because you need to train but it’s not all consuming like a half or full marathon.
My favorite distance is a half marathon. I am hoping to do one this year and would love the Garmin to train for it!
I love 5 and 10k’s, but I’m training for a half in May!
My favorite distance to run is between 8 and 10 miles. But my favorite race distance has to be a half marathon.
I tweeted. @indhu_gsrk
My favorite distance is 5 miles. It feels short enough that it’s not overwhelming yet long enough that I feel like I’ve really worked.
I tweeted also.
My favorite running distance is a 10K. Long enough to challenge but not too much of a training commitment.

Nothing like a new fitness toy to help with motivation. My choice is a 10k. Not super difficult and a hour workout make it worth the drive and cost.
