Half marathon news + a Garmin giveaway-ENDED

Thank you so much for those of you who entered the giveaway! It has ended as of 4/5 12:48am.

HUGE congrats to the lucky winner, Morgan, who said:

I love 10Ks too! Just enough to get the endorphins going, but not too much that your legs are completely screaming the next day. ;) (Just loudly complaining.)

Stay tuned for more giveaways in the near future <3 xoxo

For a while there, I was doing ok with the half marathon distance. I was running consistently, even pushing the jogging stroller for a few long runs, feeling great, wanted to keep running/racing, and then the cold weather hit. You might have remembered the Tucson snow (!) and nothing about that made me want to run outside.

Snow 1 of 1

(I guess if you really want it and live in a freezing climate, you just suck it up and do it, but I guess I didn’t want it that badly.)

Since then, I haven’t had much motivation. I’ve gone back to my nighttime workout ways, and have been doing HIIT intervals indoors even though the weather has been so beautiful. I need to enjoy it before it’s back to 6am training run time.

Yup. “Training run.”

I’m running another half marathon, but here’s the kicker: I’m actually going to train for it.

Garmin2

[Scared bird face. You’re welcome, haha.]

For the past two races, my training was really sporadic (some times I went a few weeks in between running at all) and even with the fact that I felt ready, the races were rough, and I didn’t run as well as I’d anticipated. This time, I’m ready to be more consistent and emphasize strength training. At that time, I wasn’t consistent with strength training, which likely had a negative impact on my runs.

The race deets:

I’ll be running the Women’s Running Series Half Marathon in Tempe/Scottsdale in November.

Use the discount code “FITAZGINA” to get $10 off your registration until November 3 if you’d like to run with me!

Garmin

Here’s my plan:

-one long run a week (anything more than that, and I could overtrain with my teaching schedule) building on mileage (Sunday or Monday)

-one short run each week (Tuesday or Thursday)

-consistent strength training. I aim for 3 sessions each week, even though, realistically, I’m happy if I get two

For my training, I’ll also be using my Garmin Forerunner 10 to track distance. I love my Forerunner so much -super light and compact compared to the 305- and was so stoked when Garmin asked if I’d like to do a giveaway.

One lucky winner will receive the new Forerunner 10 in the just-released gorgeous purple color!

Garmin 1 of 1

You have two ways to enter:

1) Leave a comment and tell me your favorite running distance. I love 10ks but feel like there are less and less of them lately. Non runners: what’s your favorite outdoor workout?

2) Tweet, “I want to win a Garmin from @fitnessista #beamazing #lovemygarmin” and leave an extra comment to let me know you tweeted!

I’ll pick the winner tomorrow (4/4 at midnight EST).

Ready, set, go!

xoxo

Oh I was just looking at getting that exact Garmin but I’m a poor grad student so decided it was too much to spend. I just decided to run a marathon this fall. I’ve been running casually for years but just recently the moment hit when I knew I had to run a marathon. I’m doing this more for my soul than my body. I know it’s the right thing to do for me now. I need a crazy big goal. So though I’ve never done it before I’d have to say the marathon is now my favorite distance because I have never been so excited about running before!

  2. Aimee on April 3, 2013 at 1:24 pm

My favorite distance is 6 miles. Long enough to sweat but not so long that it takes too much time!

  3. Hazel on April 3, 2013 at 1:25 pm

I have done one 10 miler and one half marathon only.. and I preferred the half! it’s probably because I was more scared of a half marathon and I trained harder! i’m doing my first 10K this weekend so will see how that compares 🙂

  4. Alyssa on April 3, 2013 at 1:25 pm

The half marathon is definitely my favorite distance. I’m training for the Minneapolis half marathon in June!

You truly don’t know the difficulties of running through the winter until you’ve experienced a cold, dark Minnesota winter. Thank goodness for Under Armour! 🙂

  5. Michelle on April 3, 2013 at 1:25 pm

I just started running and I have only run 5k’s I am trying for my first 10k in less than a month! I just moved to Atlanta so running on hills is new to me but very excited =)

  6. Julia on April 3, 2013 at 1:25 pm

I love running 8-10 miles, and my favorite race distance is a half . . . but I just signed up for my first full!

  7. Sami on April 3, 2013 at 1:25 pm

Thanks for this giveaway, Gina! 🙂

That color is awesome! And PS, your diamond looks HUGE in that picture of your arm 😉
Anyway, my favorite distance is probably a 5K. I feel like I can be more competitive at that distance. I’m very bad at pacing myself. Haha.

    xo.

  8. molly on April 3, 2013 at 1:26 pm

marathons -26.2! – the end result is like no other feeling! But I also love a 5K – short and sweet 🙂

  9. Lizel on April 3, 2013 at 1:26 pm

I love hula hooping outside 🙂

  10. Sarah on April 3, 2013 at 1:26 pm

I’m currently recovering from a stress fracture and about to do a 5K, so that’s my current fave! I love the purple color of this garmin!

  11. Tracey on April 3, 2013 at 1:27 pm

I love the 4-Miler I do at Thanksgiving. It feels like more of a distance run than a 5K, but I can still run it fast! 🙂

  12. molly @ heart, sole & cereal on April 3, 2013 at 1:29 pm

i love 10ks too! but i think half marathons are my favorite distances – training isn’t SO much that it’s overwhelming but i like having long runs planned.

  13. molly @ heart, sole & cereal on April 3, 2013 at 1:29 pm

i tweeted about the giveaway also!

  14. Kelly B. on April 3, 2013 at 1:29 pm

The half marathon is my favorite distance. What a great giveaway!!! I have been wanting a garmin forever.

  15. Emily on April 3, 2013 at 1:30 pm

The 15k is my favorite distance. I always feel so accomplished at the end.

    • Brittney on April 3, 2013 at 2:05 pm

I’m not an avid runner, but do enjoy it. I was actually researching half marathons this afternoon and have decided to sign up for the St. Louis Rock n Roll on October 27. So I have six plus months to train and actually had the thought “I wish I had a Garmin!” 🙂

Since I don’t have a favorite distance really, I have to say my favorite outdoor workout would be jogging/walking stairs at a local park nearby. Such a fun and great workout!

  16. Laura on April 3, 2013 at 1:30 pm

Half marathins are my fave! I have my third full in early May, then I’m hanging up my full marathon shoes 😉

my favorite distance would have to be around the 5 mile mark! but I really love hiking outdoors too

  19. Brittany on April 3, 2013 at 1:32 pm

I’m just starting to get into running outside now that it’s a little warmer here. I can do 3 miles comfortably but hopfully I can work my way up through the nice weather!

  20. Abbey Peterson on April 3, 2013 at 1:33 pm

My favorite distance is a 5k. I’m not much of a runner, but I like how in half an hour I can do a race and not get bored.

  21. Sami on April 3, 2013 at 1:33 pm

    I tweeted! @cox_2446!

  22. Angie K on April 3, 2013 at 1:34 pm

  25. Rebecca C. on April 3, 2013 at 1:35 pm

Running has always been a challenge for me even though I love to do it so I’m a 5k girl but would love to double that during a race in my town this summer!

  26. Crystal on April 3, 2013 at 1:35 pm

I love anything outdoors- especially bootcamps.

I’m not much of a runner but have been considering taking part in my first 5 or 10 km this year! Longer runs always seem so daunting so I think getting a few smaller runs under my belt would help with confidence!

  27. Danielle B on April 3, 2013 at 1:36 pm

My favourite distance is 10k as well! Being pregnant (38 weeks along!) I haven’t been able to run for quite a while and I miss it so much! Can’t WAIT to get back at it once my little one arrives! 🙂

  28. Jody on April 3, 2013 at 1:36 pm

I’m also a big fan on 10ks… but always feel such a rush when running anything in the double digits! Thanks for the Awesome giveaway!

  32. Amanda on April 3, 2013 at 1:37 pm

My favorite distance is a 5k (for a race). I’m much more of a sprinter than a long-distance girl!

  33. Nicole H on April 3, 2013 at 1:38 pm

15k is my favorite – not overwhelming as a half but enough to feel super accomplished!

  34. Helen on April 3, 2013 at 1:38 pm

I think 10Ks would be ideal. You can train for it without having your life devoted to running!

  35. KindraC on April 3, 2013 at 1:38 pm

Oooooh I would really love to win this! I am running the Women’s Running half in November, but in St. Pete, Florida. My fave distance is a half bc it feels like such an accomplishment for me to actually finish. Also, my daughter’s name is Violet so I’m kind of obsessed with that purple color 😉

  36. Jaleh on April 3, 2013 at 1:38 pm

My favorite distance is a half! I’m training for my first full marathon now. That long distance makes a half seem more than manageable!

  37. Sandi on April 3, 2013 at 1:39 pm

I’m a walk/runner trying to up my running distance. 5k is my favorite.

  38. Rachel on April 3, 2013 at 1:40 pm

I also love 10ks! Recently I’ve loved just going on a 10 mile run each Sunday but probably because I really do live in a beautiful area and the scenery is awesome!

  43. Elizabeth @ HobbyLobbyist on April 3, 2013 at 1:43 pm

    I love 5ks!

  44. Jenna on April 3, 2013 at 1:43 pm

Prior to having my son, I enjoyed running longer distances (10miles). Since having him almost a year ago {tear}, 10 mile runs with the extra weight of the jogger are much less appealing. But I love his company on my running days (seeing his little baby legs and feet at the end of the stroller). I would say our favorite distance now is 5 miles. 🙂

    • Jenna on April 3, 2013 at 2:18 pm

I have also Tweeted (my very 1st tweet). LoL

  45. Tara on April 3, 2013 at 1:44 pm

I loooove 10Ks! They’re challenging and a little better for ADD than half marathons!

  46. Ashley on April 3, 2013 at 1:45 pm

Ahh so great! I am going to start training soon for a half in October and right now I just lug around my iphone with the mapmyrun app but I’d love a garmin!

  47. bernadette on April 3, 2013 at 1:46 pm

I’m a newbie so 5ks are good for me. they give me something to work towards, be proud and i get to do it all for charity! its a win/win situation!

  48. mama on April 3, 2013 at 1:46 pm

    Simple 5k with friends!!
