Half marathon news + a Garmin giveaway-ENDED
Thank you so much for those of you who entered the giveaway! It has ended as of 4/5 12:48am.
HUGE congrats to the lucky winner, Morgan, who said:
I love 10Ks too! Just enough to get the endorphins going, but not too much that your legs are completely screaming the next day. (Just loudly complaining.) |
Stay tuned for more giveaways in the near future <3 xoxo

For a while there, I was doing ok with the half marathon distance. I was running consistently, even pushing the jogging stroller for a few long runs, feeling great, wanted to keep running/racing, and then the cold weather hit. You might have remembered the Tucson snow (!) and nothing about that made me want to run outside.
(I guess if you really want it and live in a freezing climate, you just suck it up and do it, but I guess I didn’t want it that badly.)
Since then, I haven’t had much motivation. I’ve gone back to my nighttime workout ways, and have been doing HIIT intervals indoors even though the weather has been so beautiful. I need to enjoy it before it’s back to 6am training run time.
Yup. “Training run.”
I’m running another half marathon, but here’s the kicker: I’m actually going to train for it.
[Scared bird face. You’re welcome, haha.]
For the past two races, my training was really sporadic (some times I went a few weeks in between running at all) and even with the fact that I felt ready, the races were rough, and I didn’t run as well as I’d anticipated. This time, I’m ready to be more consistent and emphasize strength training. At that time, I wasn’t consistent with strength training, which likely had a negative impact on my runs.
The race deets:
I’ll be running the Women’s Running Series Half Marathon in Tempe/Scottsdale in November.
Use the discount code “FITAZGINA” to get $10 off your registration until November 3 if you’d like to run with me!
Here’s my plan:
-one long run a week (anything more than that, and I could overtrain with my teaching schedule) building on mileage (Sunday or Monday)
-one short run each week (Tuesday or Thursday)
-consistent strength training. I aim for 3 sessions each week, even though, realistically, I’m happy if I get two
For my training, I’ll also be using my Garmin Forerunner 10 to track distance. I love my Forerunner so much -super light and compact compared to the 305- and was so stoked when Garmin asked if I’d like to do a giveaway.
One lucky winner will receive the new Forerunner 10 in the just-released gorgeous purple color!
You have two ways to enter:
1) Leave a comment and tell me your favorite running distance. I love 10ks but feel like there are less and less of them lately. Non runners: what’s your favorite outdoor workout?
2) Tweet, “I want to win a Garmin from @fitnessista #beamazing #lovemygarmin” and leave an extra comment to let me know you tweeted!
I’ll pick the winner tomorrow (4/4 at midnight EST).
Ready, set, go!
xoxo
Gina

[I’m running the women’s half as part of a paid campaign with Fitfluential. I was pretty stoked to be offered the opportunity- it was a great kicker of motivation. As always, all opinions are my own.]
The 10km is my favourite distance!
i tweeted about the giveaway!! i’m Gemini_72 on twitter.. i also followed you!!
i tweeted about the giveaway!! i’m Gemini_72 on twitter.. i also followed you!!
5Ks are my favorite. I like to make running something I look forward to and enjoy and so far, pushing it past 3 or 4 miles isn’t fun for me!
I love 5 milers. Not too short and not too long 🙂
10k, all the way! you are right that there are feweer of them around, though.
My fave distance is actually about 3 miles. I can run it a 3 to 5 times a week. Logging 10 – 15 miles a week consistently makes me feel great!
My favorite running distance is 5k. I’m still new to running and short runs are all I can really handle.
I would love to win this for my husband who loves to run!
I also enjoy 10Ks, although I am doing my first half the end of April so that Garmin would come in very handy!
Half marathon is my favorite for sure 🙂 my first was the Disney food and wine festival so I had plenty of motivation at the finish line, I am going to start training for the “run like a diva” half marathon in DC so this watch would be wonderful 🙂
I would looooove that!!! I’m just getting back into running and I *think* about four mile runs are my avg but I want to build on it and this would be mazing for that!!;)
I like 13.1 because I just trained to run that far 🙂
5-7 miles is my favorite distance! Not too long, but enough to get tired and sweaty!
I tweeted too!
I’m gonna have to go with the 5K. I’m not a naturally gifted runner AT ALL and I’ve finally gotten to the point where I feel comfortable doing a 5K. I’m hoping to tackle a 10K one of these days!
I tweeted the giveaway!
My favourite distance is around 7km- not too much and not too little 😉
Hi Gina! I’m actually starting to train for my first 10k relay and like you, I’m trying to balance a good training schedule with my teaching schedule. I could really use the watch to help with my runs outside!!
I’ve never been a runner, although sometimes when I’m super stressed or I get the rare urge, I will go on a short run around my neighborhood. I prefer to take walks or go on hikes outside, though. Good luck with your training! I know you’ll do great 🙂 Thanks for this nice giveaway!
tweeted!
I love 4 mile races because they’re not as brutal for me as a 5k, but I can really push it and go hard. I also love half marathons because it feels like such an accomplishment without the horrendously long training runs you have to do for a marathon. Those are my fave distances.
But – my hands-down favorite race experience ever was the NYC marathon. Amazing! So worth all the blood, sweat and tears that went into training for it.
Now, excuse me while I go tweet about your giveaway because I MUST HAVE THAT GARMIN!!!!
🙂
I am so glad you posted about this race!! We PCS to Phoenix at the end of May and I am so beyond thrilled to be somewhere that actually has races all year!! I don’t have a GPS watch so this would be awesome 🙂 Hopefully I see you at the race!
I like 5K’s.
I just finished a 10k this weekend. It reminded me of why I love the distance but the half marathon holds my heart because of the challenge of it.
I love the 5k distance!
And I tweeted!
I’ve only run one 10 miler but I liked it so much!! Long enough to feel very challenging but not so bad as a half marathon 🙂
My favorite distance is 10 miles! Longer than the 10k, but not quite so long like a half marathon. Something about going over 10 miles starts messing with my head!
My favorite race distance is 13.1 but my favorite run just for fun distance is 5 🙂
I just ran my first 10k last saturday and liked that distance a lot!
My favorite is the 5K!
My favorite distance is probably about 5 miles. But any run that takes between 30-60 minutes makes me happy!
I tweeted this giveaway!
Favorite running distance? Where do i begin? I did 7 yrs in the Army so i ran all the time. Farthest for me so far is the Army 10 miler and it was amazing. Unfortunately since I’ve gotten out of the army in 2010, my love for running has diminished to almost 0.
I decided that this year was going to be the year for me to get back into my love of running. Have my first 10k in two weeks followed by 2 color runs! Super excited! Would DEF love a new accessory to keep me going!
…pant, pant, puff…okay, I’m back from Twitter!! I just tweeted about your giveaway! Can’t wait to find out if I’m the lucky recipient of new purple Garmin bling!
I like to run half marathons! I’ve ran 6 and I like that it’s a challenge but doesn’t destroy me the way a full does. I would love to win the Garmin!!
I tweeted about the giveaway too. @rudimentaryrunr
I love half marathons…I love how it’s now got to the point that I see a half marathon as a normal distance to run! I’ll be tackling my first marathon in May so my favourite distance may well change!
I enjoy the Half Marathon distance. It pushes you without being too crazy!
Need a new Garmin, mine is 5 years old and about to bite the dust! No Twitter account, so can’t tweet! 🙁
I like 5ks and 10ks! A 5k is a nice distance to run, I like to do tempo runs to train for 5ks (I want to be sub 20!) I also love 10ks because its not too short and not too long.
Also, tweeted!
I am just getting into outside running. Unfortunately, we have excessive snow and freezing cold for what seems like way too many months of the year. I’m setting a goal to do a 5K this July though!
Just getting back into running… hope to be doing 5 miles on the regular soon!
I am new to running but I am in love! At this rate, I enjoy doing 1-3 mi runs around my city park. As a Kansas State college student, I would just looooove a purple Garmin (and its been on my wish list for about a year now). As always, you rock!
I am not really a runner but I am going to walk a couple 10k soon. My favorite outdoor workout is either walking along trails or swimming!
Love the 10k distance too!!! And I tweeted!
In high school my favorite distance was the 800, now its more like 2 miles. I like slow and steady now that I’m older
I’ve yet to run a race but definitely am enjoying distance running lately. I need at least 5 miles before I get into my ‘zone’.
I’ve done one full marathon and that’s been my favorite so far. I love 10k races too, because I don’t hit my sweet spot until about mile 4.
I’ve never been a runner but I have always wanted to be. Maybe if I had this watch it would be just the motivation I need!
