Half marathon news + a Garmin giveaway-ENDED
Thank you so much for those of you who entered the giveaway! It has ended as of 4/5 12:48am.
HUGE congrats to the lucky winner, Morgan, who said:
I love 10Ks too! Just enough to get the endorphins going, but not too much that your legs are completely screaming the next day. (Just loudly complaining.) |
Stay tuned for more giveaways in the near future <3 xoxo

For a while there, I was doing ok with the half marathon distance. I was running consistently, even pushing the jogging stroller for a few long runs, feeling great, wanted to keep running/racing, and then the cold weather hit. You might have remembered the Tucson snow (!) and nothing about that made me want to run outside.
(I guess if you really want it and live in a freezing climate, you just suck it up and do it, but I guess I didn’t want it that badly.)
Since then, I haven’t had much motivation. I’ve gone back to my nighttime workout ways, and have been doing HIIT intervals indoors even though the weather has been so beautiful. I need to enjoy it before it’s back to 6am training run time.
Yup. “Training run.”
I’m running another half marathon, but here’s the kicker: I’m actually going to train for it.
[Scared bird face. You’re welcome, haha.]
For the past two races, my training was really sporadic (some times I went a few weeks in between running at all) and even with the fact that I felt ready, the races were rough, and I didn’t run as well as I’d anticipated. This time, I’m ready to be more consistent and emphasize strength training. At that time, I wasn’t consistent with strength training, which likely had a negative impact on my runs.
The race deets:
I’ll be running the Women’s Running Series Half Marathon in Tempe/Scottsdale in November.
Use the discount code “FITAZGINA” to get $10 off your registration until November 3 if you’d like to run with me!
Here’s my plan:
-one long run a week (anything more than that, and I could overtrain with my teaching schedule) building on mileage (Sunday or Monday)
-one short run each week (Tuesday or Thursday)
-consistent strength training. I aim for 3 sessions each week, even though, realistically, I’m happy if I get two
For my training, I’ll also be using my Garmin Forerunner 10 to track distance. I love my Forerunner so much -super light and compact compared to the 305- and was so stoked when Garmin asked if I’d like to do a giveaway.
One lucky winner will receive the new Forerunner 10 in the just-released gorgeous purple color!
You have two ways to enter:
1) Leave a comment and tell me your favorite running distance. I love 10ks but feel like there are less and less of them lately. Non runners: what’s your favorite outdoor workout?
2) Tweet, “I want to win a Garmin from @fitnessista #beamazing #lovemygarmin” and leave an extra comment to let me know you tweeted!
I’ll pick the winner tomorrow (4/4 at midnight EST).
Ready, set, go!
xoxo

Veteran’s Day half marathon recap
[I’m running the women’s half as part of a paid campaign with Fitfluential. I was pretty stoked to be offered the opportunity- it was a great kicker of motivation. As always, all opinions are my own.]
Half marathons are by far my favorite distance! I did 4 of the last year and this year I’m upping the anty and running a full (eek!)
My favorite running distance is definitely a 10k!
Just tweeted! Thank you!
I really love 5ks. But have signed up for my first half marathon!
love your blog! my fave distance is the marathon because it’s such a great dedication and also motivates me to run more shorter distance races!
I tweeted!
i also tweeted!
I just started running again so I can’t do more than 3 miles, but a half-marathon is something I’m hoping to work towards.
I tweeted! thanks so much!
I think the half marathon distance. It pushes me more than other distances because it is so hard for me. But I get a medal at the end, so that totally makes up for it!
I love circuit training or yoga in the park!
I tweeted!
My favorite race distance is the 10k, but I am just starting to train for my first half ever (eek!). I have been going crazy trying to “guesstimate” distances for my long runs (‘…that sure FEELS like its been seven miles!!’)
I’m new to running so its 5k all the way for this girl
I am running my first marathon this weekend so I’lll reserve my judgement on that distance! But I prefer the 10km distance mainly because it doesn’t take so much of your time training wise and feel it is short enough to run fast!
@PirateWhisperer
Favorite outdoor activity would have to be beach volleyball! Gotta love living on the coast.
My favorite running distance is the half marathon. I feel like I’ve conquered the world when it’s over.
I love a 10k or a half – they both have an aspect of challenge to them, but not impossible!
My favorite outdoor workout is hiking. It’s so nice to be outside, with my hubby or friend, and get a nice sweat going while enjoying beautiful scenery.
I tweeted (brichtweets) ;-).
I have been a runner since I was 11 when my dad started bringing me on his runs to help me with soccer. Now at 27, half marathons and marathons are my favorite. Either that our a killer mile repeat workout!
I like 5ks and 10ks too!
When I run outside, it’s usually a 5k. For my speed, it makes the perfect amount of time for cardio with a little strength mixed in 🙂
Just tweeted 🙂
I just tweeted too!
I like the half marathon distance. I feel like I burn out really fast in 5ks and like you said 10ks are rare these days.
I love running marathons!!! I recently registered for my 10th which will be in October in Upstate New York. It is a lot of training and hard work but there is nothing like the feeling of accomplishment after a long training run and, of course, the race. Plus, I am trying to qualify for Boston so I have an even bigger goal that I’m trying to reach (bigger than finishing the marathon). I was 4 minutes too slow when I ran my last marathon a few months ago so hopefully the one in October will be the one!
Btw, you will do GREAT on this half!! You are dedicated and conditioned so I know you will train well and run strong. Very excited to hear all about it! 🙂
I love 10Ks. The bolderboulder in Boulder, Co is the best!
My wife and I love a good 5k. Hoping to win a garmin for her!
Oh, and I tweeted this (forgot to mention that in my last post)!
My favorite distance is 10K and as for the outdoor activity I’d say either hiking or rock climbing;)
i used to love running 10 miles for fun. now i’m out of shape. weeee! also, tomorrow is my birthday. the garmin makes and excellent gift.
My favorite distance is the 10k but I love the challenge of the half marathon. When I’m not running I love crossfit!
My favorite running distance is definitely a 10K. Just enough to get you going but not long enough to get boring. But I’m training for my first half-marathon so it’s up in the air if I’ll like those better or not… time will tell.
Ah! I love the half marathon distance, because it really makes you dig a bit deeper, and push a bit more. Although running 10 miles is pretty sufficient too!
I’ve yet to run in any race but that’s my goal this year. I think I’ll start with a 10k and see how that goes.
M fave distance is half marathons! I’ve done two in the past but sort of fell out of running due to a few injuries. I would love to get back to running in style with that gorg purple Garmin!!
I’m reletively new to running but the bug has definitely bitten! I’m loving 10k’s at the moment but am super keen to do my first half marathon 🙂 I can’t wait for summer to come so Zumba and bootcamp in the park starts again! Would love to try one of your Zumba classes one day!
I have only yet to run my first 5k. Every time I start to train I injure myself, so I am looking forward to my first next month!
I love 10k’s I think its the perfect distance!
tweeted too!
My favorite distance is the half marathon! I love the energy at races! Would love a Garmin watch to monitor my speed and distance while training for my first full marathon on my 30th birthday!
I think half marathons are my favorite, but saturday will be my first 10k!
I love 5ks! Not too much but enough for me to feel awesome at the end!

A 10K is the perfect race for me. Good mix of speed and distance.
I tweeted!
I tweeted! Thanks! And I am too excited to get back outside, though it’s snowing here again (and while I live in a cold climate, I am not one to grin and bare it. I wait for warmth to return).
Ohhh Gosh what a Nice watch. I am preparing for THE Rotterdam marathon in 2014 after I had an injury for several months. Therefore I certainly can This watch.
When i was running long distance, i loved Half marathons!!! Now I will stick to short distance running, rollerblading and biking! I live in MN where it is still 35 degrees… it will be awhile!
I like 10ks too….I’ve run a number of 5ks and 10ks, and one half, and the 10k is a happy medium that makes me feel like a “real” runner (haha) but is easier to train for with a full time job and two kids (one with special needs). I do plan on doing another half this fall, and that Garmin would sure come in handy! 🙂
