Half marathon news + a Garmin giveaway-ENDED
Thank you so much for those of you who entered the giveaway! It has ended as of 4/5 12:48am.ย
HUGE congrats to the lucky winner, Morgan, who said:
I love 10Ks too! Just enough to get the endorphins going, but not too much that your legs are completely screaming the next day.ย ย (Just loudly complaining.) |
Stay tuned for more giveaways in the near future <3 xoxo

For a while there, I was doing ok with the half marathon distance. I was running consistently, even pushing the jogging stroller for a few long runs, feeling great, wanted to keep running/racing, and then the cold weather hit. You might have remembered the Tucson snow (!) and nothing about that made me want to run outside.
(I guess if you really want it and live in a freezing climate, you just suck it up and do it, but I guess I didn’t want it that badly.)
Since then, I haven’t had much motivation. I’ve gone back to my nighttime workout ways, and have been doing HIIT intervals indoors even though the weather has been so beautiful. I need to enjoy it before it’s back to 6am training run time.
Yup. “Training run.”
I’m running another half marathon, but here’s the kicker: I’m actually going to train for it.
[Scared bird face. You’re welcome, haha.]
For the past two races, my training was really sporadic (some times I went a few weeks in between running at all) and even with the fact that I felt ready, the races were rough, and I didn’t run as well as I’d anticipated. This time, I’m ready to be more consistent and emphasize strength training. At that time, I wasn’t consistent with strength training, which likely had a negative impact on my runs.
The race deets:
I’ll be running the Women’s Running Series Half Marathon in Tempe/Scottsdale in November.
Use the discount code “FITAZGINA” to get $10 off your registration until November 3 if you’d like to run with me!
Here’s my plan:
-one long run a week (anything more than that, and I could overtrain with my teaching schedule) building on mileage (Sunday or Monday)
-one short run each week (Tuesday or Thursday)
-consistent strength training. I aim for 3 sessions each week, even though, realistically, I’m happy if I get two
For my training, I’ll also be using my Garmin Forerunner 10 to track distance. I love my Forerunner so much -super light and compact compared to the 305- and was so stoked when Garmin asked if I’d like to do a giveaway.
One lucky winner will receive the new Forerunner 10 in the just-released gorgeous purple color!
You have two ways to enter:
1) Leave a comment and tell me your favorite running distance. I love 10ks but feel like there are less and less of them lately. Non runners: what’s your favorite outdoor workout?
2) Tweet, “I want to win a Garmin from @fitnessista #beamazing #lovemygarmin” and leave an extra comment to let me know you tweeted!
I’ll pick the winner tomorrow (4/4 at midnight EST).
Ready, set, go!
xoxo

[I’m running the women’s half as part of a paid campaign with Fitfluential. I was pretty stoked to be offered the opportunity- it was a great kicker of motivation. As always, all opinions are my own.]
100m dash baby!
I’ve only done a couple 5Ks but would love to train, build up to, and challenge myself for a 10K!
I tweeted! My favorite distance is 15km so far. I love long runs, and the 10k has become a bit too short; I need the moment when I realise my feet are doing the running and I can just relax and do something else, like think, read a book (just kidding) or enjoy music and the view.
I am participating to win – and give away the prize. I have a Garmin 610 and purple is not my colour. But my sister is working hard after a serious illness to get her energy back and get back in shape, and she wants to pick up running again as well. A Garmin will help motivate her and support her, especially since we can then connect through the Garmin website and comment on our runs.
Running has always been hard for me, I didn’t grow up playing soccer or any other type of sport where running distances was necessary, but I’m trying to be a better runner. Right now I’m doing the couch-to-5k plan and I’m on week 7. My pace and stamina is improving. My goal is to run a 10k, maybe a half someday-but that is really far ๐
I would have to say that 10Ks are my favorite as well!
My favorite long run distance is 7 or 8 miles and 4 or 5 for everyday runs. I am glad the weather is starting to get better since I love running outside instead of on a treadmill.
10ks! Hard work but short enough to see improvement with a few training cycles and can walk afterwards ๐
I love 5Ks! It is a good distance to challenge speed which is always hard for me, so I feel so rewarded by even a few seconds improvement. =)
My favorite distance right now is between 3 and 4 miles.
defintely 10K…..although I do love me some 5ks! ๐
What a coincidence, I just signed up for my first run EVER, a 5k though, but I’m super excited! I have no idea what my time is or how fast I run a mile. . . I’m going in blind! My goal is to run the race without walking or stopping. For training, I use the Google map my run thing to find different loops in my neighborhood – very cool. Happy training!
I love 10Ks too! Just enough to get the endorphins going, but not too much that your legs are completely screaming the next day. ๐ (Just loudly complaining.)
My vote goes for 10k as well, though as you note there don’t seem to be many of them.
10Ks are for sure my favorite! I’m signed up to do my first half-marathon in June and I am hoping that will be my new favorite distance! I would love a garmin to track distance and heart rate!
I tweeted!
I tweeted!
I LOVE 10Ks. There seems to be 5k races every other day (not worth my $$) and not enough 10ks so I absolutely agree.
I’m also training for a half marathon… My new year’s resolution was to run one this year.
Fingers crossed I start training seriously too =)
I love half marathons! Perfect amount of speed and distance for me.
My favorite distance is the marathon!
I love 5Ks! Not too long, but long enough for me to feel good about running it.
5 miles is my usual, but I love 10ks!
I love 5Ks because they are short and sweet!
I tweeted about the giveaway!
I think I agree with you, I love a 10k. Not too long or too short!
I’m a walker. I don’t have the knees for running.
I really like to do 5 & 8 miles for training/regular runs, but I do love the half distance for racing! It takes commitment and is long enough to make it feel like you really accomplished something, but short enough to not kill you!
love half marathons!

my favorite running distance would have to be a 10k as well! Living in Atlanta, I’ve grown up with the biggest 10k Peachtree Road Race hype and look forward to it every year!
Outdoor African dance class…best thing ever! Hiking too. But I’m starting to run now and have big plans. My first 5k is next month!
I don’t race much anymore but when I did, my favorite distance was the half marathon (and that was way before it was considered such a cool race!).
I’m hoping after October to say my favorite is the 50 mile!
And, I tweeted about the giveaway.
(@daywithkt)
I love 8 mile runs and not just because 8 is my lucky number. 8 miles hit the sweet spot of not overtaxing my body or giving me the crazy munchies post -run.
Half-marathon (13.1)! I’m training for one too, and have been hoping to get one of these bad boys.
1/2 marathons – long enough to make you feel you’ve accomplished some significant without needing to spend 1/2 your week on training runs
I personally love 5K’s cus there’s no pressure! It’s just a fun way to get out and move. But if I want to challenge myself I will do a 10k. I haven’t done anything more yet! I hope to do a half marathon some day soon though!
I tweeted ๐
I am just now getting back into running after having my baby and a really LONG winter up here in Iowa! I am planning on doing a 5K this summer! I really love 10K because they push me a little especially at a race! I use to do one every fall! We also take lots of walks outside when the weather permits and spring is definitely upon us!
5 mile runs are my favorite! Short enough to do regularly, but long enough to feel like an accomplishment!
I love half marathons, but I REALLY loved running my full marathon. I would love to do another 26.2 ๐
I tweeted! @ebbradley27
I love running and after tackling the full marathon distance, it’s safe to say that half marathons are my favorite! I can choose to train for it or just wing it…of course knowing that my pace won’t be nearly as great!

Definite non-runner here! My favorite outdoor workout would either be swimming or riding my bike!
I love half marathons, but they do take considerable training time if done properly!
My favorite distance is the half marathon! I really feel like I’ve accomplished something big when I finish. I’m going to run my 8th in May!
Hey! This garmin looks awesome! My favorite running distance is 3 miles. It’s my favorite because I run with my daughter who just turned 1. She does really well in the bob stroller at this distance. My favorite distance race is probably a 10 miler-it’s not too long and not too short. I love to run and actually love to do triathlons. I think I’m going to do a half marathon in early May. Love your blog
5Ks are my favorite!
