For a while there, I was doing ok with the half marathon distance. I was running consistently, even pushing the jogging stroller for a few long runs, feeling great, wanted to keep running/racing, and then the cold weather hit. You might have remembered the Tucson snow (!) and nothing about that made me want to run outside.
(I guess if you really want it and live in a freezing climate, you just suck it up and do it, but I guess I didn’t want it that badly.)
Since then, I haven’t had much motivation. I’ve gone back to my nighttime workout ways, and have been doing HIIT intervals indoors even though the weather has been so beautiful. I need to enjoy it before it’s back to 6am training run time.
Yup. “Training run.”
I’m running another half marathon, but here’s the kicker: I’m actually going to train for it.
[Scared bird face. You’re welcome, haha.]
For the past two races, my training was really sporadic (some times I went a few weeks in between running at all) and even with the fact that I felt ready, the races were rough, and I didn’t run as well as I’d anticipated. This time, I’m ready to be more consistent and emphasize strength training. At that time, I wasn’t consistent with strength training, which likely had a negative impact on my runs.
The race deets:
I’ll be running the Women’s Running Series Half Marathon in Tempe/Scottsdale in November.
Use the discount code “FITAZGINA” to get $10 off your registration until November 3 if you’d like to run with me!
Here’s my plan:
-one long run a week (anything more than that, and I could overtrain with my teaching schedule) building on mileage (Sunday or Monday)
-one short run each week (Tuesday or Thursday)
-consistent strength training. I aim for 3 sessions each week, even though, realistically, I’m happy if I get two
For my training, I’ll also be using my Garmin Forerunner 10 to track distance. I love my Forerunner so much -super light and compact compared to the 305- and was so stoked when Garmin asked if I’d like to do a giveaway.
One lucky winner will receive the new Forerunner 10 in the just-released gorgeous purple color!
You have two ways to enter:
1) Leave a comment and tell me your favorite running distance. I love 10ks but feel like there are less and less of them lately. Non runners: what’s your favorite outdoor workout?
2) Tweet, “I want to win a Garmin from @fitnessista #beamazing #lovemygarmin” and leave an extra comment to let me know you tweeted!
I’ll pick the winner tomorrow (4/4 at midnight EST).
Ready, set, go!
xoxo

[I’m running the women’s half as part of a paid campaign with Fitfluential. I was pretty stoked to be offered the opportunity- it was a great kicker of motivation. As always, all opinions are my own.]
I’m actually training for my very first race and would LOVE one of these to help me! I’m running a 10K, so we’ll see if that becomes my favorite race.
I just recently started running and have signed up for my first 5K. Although I’m pretty new to running, I think I’ll pick 5K as my favorite distance since that is my current goal. A garmin would definitely help me encourage me to continue to push myself to further distances.
I enjoy 5ks. Though I am hoping to run a 10K this Fall.
I love running 4-5 miles if I’m just going for a run, and if I pick a race, it’s probably a 5K!:)
I’d love so much to win a Garmin from my favorite blog, The Fitnessista! My favorite distance I guess would be 5k…I’m currently training to run my first one ever! The Corporate 5k in Orlando, FL. The Garmin would be very helpful ๐ Thanks Gina!
I love the half marathon!! I have run two, the first while 4 mos pregnant, and after having my 3rd baby I am slowly trying to get back into it. I have been focusing on weight training, and just recently decided to give the Couch to 10K a try. I had IT band issues, and they said to make sure I start SLOW!! Been eyeing a Garmin, would love to win this one!!
I tweeted too ๐
i want to be a runner, does that count? i’ve done a 5k but would love to have a 10k under my belt too!
I really love a 10 mile race. It doesn’t require quite as much prep as a half marathon, but the distance still feels really substantial!
Love 10ks – they’re the perfect distance for when I want to clock some miles but don’t have a ton of time. I always feel great at the end of a 10k!
PURPLE! My fav is the 5k, because it’s the easiest to fit into my busy schedule!
aaaand I tweeted ๐

I love 10ks – I’m not a big runner but these are just the right distance that I can know I can finish and get a change to challenge myself to try and go faster, instead of half marathons and marathons where my only goal is to finish. I also love doing longer runs on the weekend in the park, but never know how far I go – a Garmin would be a great addition so I could track this!
Awesome giveaway. Half marathon ๐
I have only run one half but I absolutely loved it and want to do many more. But if I am just going for a normal run, 8 is my favorite distance.
Non-runner here! My favorite outdoor workout is a power walk with my best friend. The miles and minutes vanish as we talk away. Good luck keeping up with us – pace of walk and words.

i love a good marathon! The events for cancer are amazing (: i hope i win! thanks so much for this opportunity!

I love running half-marathons. While training, my favorite distance is 10 miles. I always feel such a sense of accomplishment after I run 10 miles.
I’m actuallya huge fan of 15ks but you hardly see them around! Its the perfect distance between 10k and half though. ๐

Just tweeted (via Tweating Texas, my nutrition account) ๐ ๐ ๐
My favorite distance to train for is definitely a half marathon! I’m running my first Ragnar Relay this summer and am excited to see if this could be my new favorite race style! Good luck in your half marathon training!
I’m doing couch to 5k so I’ll go with 5k! ๐
Hello there,
I have been running for a couple of months now. My dream goal is to run a marathon, but I know I’m not there yet. I have ran a couple of 5Ks which are tons of fun and at the moment my favorite. I have gathered a group of my friends together and we are training to run our first Half Marathon. We have decided on Disney’s Wine and Dine Half Marathon in November. Why not make it a mini vaca right?!?!?! Lay in the sun after a 13 mile run, YES PLEASE! ๐ We are super excited and it will be fun to read about your journey too. The time limit for a mile is set at 16 minutes…if you fall behind they will sweep you off of your feet and drive you to the finish line. Seeing that my prince charming should be the only one sweeping me off of my feet, I really need to train. Good Luck and let the training begin!!!

Just tweeted your (my) message!
I’m a newbie runner who did my first 5K recently- loved it! Running 5 miles is still an accomplishment for me, and I feel great every time I run 5 or more miles.
My favorite runnin distance is a 5k. I want to run a half though. I always get hurt with an unrelated injury about 1-2 months before a said race. Besides the distance I also like that if you get hurt before a 5k most times you can still run it or are only out $20-$25 usually instead of $100.
5 miles is my sweet spot when I’m running consistently.
I love half marathons!
I honestly prefer HIITs and don’t really care on the distance (unless measuring distance is part of the HIIT) I’m still in my beginning stage of trying to become a “runner” so I’m happy with 3 miles in 30 minutes.
I like 5k & 10k. I would love to win the garmin!!
Winning the Garmin would be really great…and helpful!
My favourite outdoor workout is walking/jogging. I’m working on my endurance…
10k for the win ๐
10ks are my favorite too- but you’re right, they are disappearing!
My favorite is a 5K- I’ve been training to run my very first one next Saturday!
My favorite distance is probably the 5K – it’s nice and short and you can have some fun with it! And, although a half marathon is rewarding, I like a quickie ๐
I love marathons. Is that crazy? I just feel so powerful and awesome training to run that distance.
I’ve ran multiple marathons and half’s, but have never owned a Garmin. This would definitely come in handy!
Love 10Ks, especially the Peachtree Road Race! Determined to run a half marathon before the year is over.
I can only do 5k because I’ve had both of my hips replaced…. I know weird, but really my hips only do good for about 2 miles before I have to walk…. But instill love to do them!
I’m partial to 5ks. Hoping to move up to 10ks soon.
I tweeted as well! Username xkels
Just tweeted it!
I haven’t decided my favorite distance yet. I know it’s not 5K. I’m leaning toward 10K and YES, they are disappearing which I hate! Or maybe it’s that 5Ks are multiplying and it’s pushing out the 10Ks. I want to do a few more halfs and at least one full. I’ve done one half so far and I have an 8K this weekend. It’s my first at that distance so we’ll see.
I prefer biking but I would really like to push myself to run a half marathon!
My favorite running distance is 13.1 miles. I have run marathons but on a normal weekend a half is just enough for a good workout while having time to relax afterward without blisters and such.
Love the halfs but feel like full marathons are the true challenge in running!

My initial response to the pictures, before even reading the post, was “WHERE DID SHE GET A PURPLE ONE!!!?!?!?!?” It’s so pretty.
I’d say 10K; it’s long enough to be an accomplishment, but doesn’t require schedule changes to train for ๐
