Half marathon news + a Garmin giveaway-ENDED

Thank you so much for those of you who entered the giveaway! It has ended as of 4/5 12:48am.ย

HUGE congrats to the lucky winner, Morgan, who said:

I love 10Ks too! Just enough to get the endorphins going, but not too much that your legs are completely screaming the next day.ย ;)ย (Just loudly complaining.)

Stay tuned for more giveaways in the near future <3 xoxo

For a while there, I was doing ok with the half marathon distance. I was running consistently, even pushing the jogging stroller for a few long runs, feeling great, wanted to keep running/racing, and then the cold weather hit. You might have remembered the Tucson snow (!) and nothing about that made me want to run outside.

Snow 1 of 1

(I guess if you really want it and live in a freezing climate, you just suck it up and do it, but I guess I didn’t want it that badly.)

Since then, I haven’t had much motivation. I’ve gone back to my nighttime workout ways, and have been doing HIIT intervals indoors even though the weather has been so beautiful. I need to enjoy it before it’s back to 6am training run time.

Yup. “Training run.”

I’m running another half marathon, but here’s the kicker: I’m actually going to train for it.

Garmin2

[Scared bird face. You’re welcome, haha.]

For the past two races, my training was really sporadic (some times I went a few weeks in between running at all) and even with the fact that I felt ready, the races were rough, and I didn’t run as well as I’d anticipated. This time, I’m ready to be more consistent and emphasize strength training. At that time, I wasn’t consistent with strength training, which likely had a negative impact on my runs.

The race deets:

I’ll be running the Women’s Running Series Half Marathon in Tempe/Scottsdale in November.

Use the discount code “FITAZGINA” to get $10 off your registration until November 3 if you’d like to run with me!

Garmin

Here’s my plan:

-one long run a week (anything more than that, and I could overtrain with my teaching schedule) building on mileage (Sunday or Monday)

-one short run each week (Tuesday or Thursday)

-consistent strength training. I aim for 3 sessions each week, even though, realistically, I’m happy if I get two

For my training, I’ll also be using my Garmin Forerunner 10 to track distance. I love my Forerunner so much -super light and compact compared to the 305- and was so stoked when Garmin asked if I’d like to do a giveaway.

One lucky winner will receive the new Forerunner 10 in the just-released gorgeous purple color!

Garmin 1 of 1

You have two ways to enter:

1) Leave a comment and tell me your favorite running distance. I love 10ks but feel like there are less and less of them lately. Non runners: what’s your favorite outdoor workout?

2) Tweet, “I want to win a Garmin from @fitnessista #beamazing #lovemygarmin” and leave an extra comment to let me know you tweeted!

I’ll pick the winner tomorrow (4/4 at midnight EST).

Ready, set, go!

xoxo

Not a runner, but I’ve been been dying to run a 5K, my goal is to run one in the fall! Fingers crossed! Gonna start training when the weather warms up! My favorite outdoor workout is tennis, or simply taking the Ipad, finding a circuit workout online, and doing the workout in my backyard!

Not really a runner but I have really wanted to try running a 5k sometime. Anything with my horses probably counts as my favorite outdoor exercise. I also love going for walks with my mom when we can find the time

I love to run 5k’s to I can really challenge my speed!

  19. Molly on April 3, 2013 at 10:02 pm

10ks are a great distance, but I have never actually ran one before. I run a lot of half marathons and one full marathon. I run these races with my sister. I just recently got a Garmin from my husband, but I would loooovve to have a Garmin to give to my sister. I love knowing my pace as I am running. It is such a great motivator.

  20. Laura J. on April 3, 2013 at 10:02 pm

I’m not much of a runner but I’d like to be! I’m thinking about doing the couch to 5k program to get me started ๐Ÿ™‚

  21. Kristen D on April 3, 2013 at 10:03 pm

I just ran my first 15K and I thought it was such an awesome distance!!!

  22. Bec on April 3, 2013 at 10:09 pm

I mostly race marathons and halfs but when I am training I love 15km runs!

  23. Natalie on April 3, 2013 at 10:10 pm

My favorite are the 5ks! They are always such a fun environment.

  24. Kalley on April 3, 2013 at 10:12 pm

My favorite are 5Ks, but I’d love to tackle longer runs – and this would be amazing motivation to do it!

  25. Laura on April 3, 2013 at 10:12 pm

I have to say I love mid distance runs 15k, 10 mile and Half Marathons are my favorites.

  26. Michelle on April 3, 2013 at 10:12 pm

I love running ten milers! Perfect distance in my opinion!

  27. Emily S on April 3, 2013 at 10:13 pm

I love 10ks! I just ran the Crescent City Classic in New Orleans last Saturday!

  28. Angela on April 3, 2013 at 10:13 pm

I’ve only run 5ks. Not in an official 5k race or anything, but just running 5k or a little over 3 miles each time I go for a run. Anything less feels too short, while more tires out my feet!

  29. Ashley Lynn on April 3, 2013 at 10:13 pm

Half marathons are my jam!! But I’m psyched on anything that gets me outdoors. Bootcamp outdoors is a blast!

  30. Katie on April 3, 2013 at 10:13 pm

I really like 10k races and a good 8 mile training run. Running 8 miles on a whim is such a vicotious feeling!!!

  31. Carolyn on April 3, 2013 at 10:14 pm

I’m a high school cross country runner — have been on the varsity team since freshman year and this was my last season as a senior ๐Ÿ™ I’m hoping to continue to run in college next year (at UC Berkeley!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) Stoked.

My favorite distance is a steady state 10 miles — but I like the course to have some inclines and declines, and some change of pavement (grass, gravel, road, dirt).

I also have a few fav track workouts: 10X400M sprints, with 400M rest in between. And a pyramid piece that is to long to write out. If you’re interested, I’ll post it. ๐Ÿ™‚

I would so love a Garmin!! I would use it every day for the rest of my life. Help a poor college girl out, ahaha ๐Ÿ˜‰

Keep on rocking the training plan, Gina! Looks great!

  32. Joy on April 3, 2013 at 10:15 pm

5 miles is definitely my favorite but I need to up my mileage

My favorite distance is the half marathon.

  34. Wendy B. on April 3, 2013 at 10:16 pm

I am a new runner so I am loving the 5k but hope to work up to a half someday.

  35. Kelley on April 3, 2013 at 10:16 pm

My favorite outdoor workout would have to be a tie between hiking with the dogs or swimming in the ocean!

  36. Shannon on April 3, 2013 at 10:17 pm

I’m training for my first 1/2 marathon, so right now that is my favorite distance;) Besides that, I love biking outdoors. Can’t wait to get my bike out of the garage when the temps warm up!

  37. Morgan on April 3, 2013 at 10:17 pm

I did my first half last fall and now I am hooked. Looking forward to my next in Las Vegas in November after having my first baby this summer!!! Love running in new cities, keeps the course exciting!!!

I love 5Ks and 10Ks but really want to try a half-marathon! Trying to get the motivation to do one and break that 10 mile barrier!

  40. Kaylin on April 3, 2013 at 10:19 pm

I love 5 mile runs! Under an hour and I still feel likeigot in a good solid run!

  41. Anna@ActiveFingers on April 3, 2013 at 10:19 pm

I started training in January and am aiming to run my first 5K in about a month. After that I would like to run a half marathon. My runs are starting to get more consistent as the weather in northern Illinois warms up and the sun comes out ๐Ÿ™‚

I love the 10k distance! It’s a strong distance without going into half marathon level, and fun at the same time!

  49. Nicole on April 3, 2013 at 10:23 pm

Defo 10km! I try to do one every week as a long run even though I’m not training for anything at the mo. They’re long enough to be challenging and make you feel like you’ve achieved a decent distance at the end! But short enough so you don’t want to cry when you’re miles from home and have to go all the way back with a cramping calve/headache/it’s raining!
