Half marathon news + a Garmin giveaway-ENDED
Thank you so much for those of you who entered the giveaway! It has ended as of 4/5 12:48am.ย
HUGE congrats to the lucky winner, Morgan, who said:
I love 10Ks too! Just enough to get the endorphins going, but not too much that your legs are completely screaming the next day.ย ย (Just loudly complaining.) |
Stay tuned for more giveaways in the near future <3 xoxo

For a while there, I was doing ok with the half marathon distance. I was running consistently, even pushing the jogging stroller for a few long runs, feeling great, wanted to keep running/racing, and then the cold weather hit. You might have remembered the Tucson snow (!) and nothing about that made me want to run outside.
(I guess if you really want it and live in a freezing climate, you just suck it up and do it, but I guess I didn’t want it that badly.)
Since then, I haven’t had much motivation. I’ve gone back to my nighttime workout ways, and have been doing HIIT intervals indoors even though the weather has been so beautiful. I need to enjoy it before it’s back to 6am training run time.
Yup. “Training run.”
I’m running another half marathon, but here’s the kicker: I’m actually going to train for it.
[Scared bird face. You’re welcome, haha.]
For the past two races, my training was really sporadic (some times I went a few weeks in between running at all) and even with the fact that I felt ready, the races were rough, and I didn’t run as well as I’d anticipated. This time, I’m ready to be more consistent and emphasize strength training. At that time, I wasn’t consistent with strength training, which likely had a negative impact on my runs.
The race deets:
I’ll be running the Women’s Running Series Half Marathon in Tempe/Scottsdale in November.
Use the discount code “FITAZGINA” to get $10 off your registration until November 3 if you’d like to run with me!
Here’s my plan:
-one long run a week (anything more than that, and I could overtrain with my teaching schedule) building on mileage (Sunday or Monday)
-one short run each week (Tuesday or Thursday)
-consistent strength training. I aim for 3 sessions each week, even though, realistically, I’m happy if I get two
For my training, I’ll also be using my Garmin Forerunner 10 to track distance. I love my Forerunner so much -super light and compact compared to the 305- and was so stoked when Garmin asked if I’d like to do a giveaway.
One lucky winner will receive the new Forerunner 10 in the just-released gorgeous purple color!
You have two ways to enter:
1) Leave a comment and tell me your favorite running distance. I love 10ks but feel like there are less and less of them lately. Non runners: what’s your favorite outdoor workout?
2) Tweet, “I want to win a Garmin from @fitnessista #beamazing #lovemygarmin” and leave an extra comment to let me know you tweeted!
I’ll pick the winner tomorrow (4/4 at midnight EST).
Ready, set, go!
xoxo

Veteran’s Day half marathon recap
[I’m running the women’s half as part of a paid campaign with Fitfluential. I was pretty stoked to be offered the opportunity- it was a great kicker of motivation. As always, all opinions are my own.]
I like 10k’s, too. Still a challenge for me, but not such a training commitment!
I love 5ks! I really want to run a 10k, but like you said… they are hard to come by! I’ve also done a half, and would love to do another one in the future!
My favorite distance is 4-5 miles! Long enough that I feel like I got a solid, strong run in but not so long that I get bored and start to feel like I’m dragging =)
I LOVE half marathons!! No burning desire to run a full at this time, but I will never say never!!
My favourite distance is 10 km.. but I still have to attempt a half marathon!!
I have run a handful of 5ks, and an obstacle 6k runn. I was suppose to run my first half at the beginning of may but because of injury i am going to have to switch to the 10k and hope to be ready by then. Hoping for a fall half marathon as well!!
5 miles always seems to be my money length. I always have my best times when I run that distance!
If you love Ricky Bobby you have to come run the Talladega 21,000!! (Half marathon with the first and last 5k being around the track.) So much fun!! I don’t tweet, but does it count that I told a friend???
10K is my favorite distance, although last weekend’s 5K color run was fun too!
I want to run a 5k someday–for now I’m just walking the dogs:)
I love trail running, not necessarily a distance just enjoying the nature!! ( I would have made fun of myself for saying that before but I really do like the outdoors!)
I love 5ks, short and fast! But I’d love to get into longer distances. Thanks for the give away!
fave outdoor workout is yoga- there’s a studio in Memphis that has an AMAZING zen garden that made practice such a treat ๐
love to run any distance when my knees cooperate, if not I have taken up more biking.
i love a nice 10k run…but have really learned to LOVE the half mara!!!
In the past two years I have gone from walk/run of a 5k in 41 mins to 31 mins. Best race time was 30:30! And 10km went form 80+ mins to 62. So here is to hitting a sub 60 this year!!! A GARMIN would totally help that!!

I love running, but I can’t handle long distances, so I jog and walk on and off, but I love taking my pup out for his exercise and walking down to the park.
I love me some half marathons!! Training does rule your life like for a marathon, but you still feel SUCH a sense of accomplishment!
P.S. April 4th is my birthday and purple is my favorite color. Coincidence? I think not! ๐
I love 10ks ๐ and that purple shade!
5k is my favorite distance right now, although I’m in the process of training for a half!
I like 5K runs. Short and sweet!
Also, I tweeted ๐ @fitnesslaur
Thanks for a great giveaway! My favorite distance is 5 miles.
5K, since that’s all I can handle ๐
5k is my favorite distance. Thanks for a great give away -would love to see it on my arm!
i love running six miles! my family runs wharf to wharf every year from santa cruz to capitola and we love it!
8 miles is my favorite distance!! Good luck with your training. Hopefully I’ll be training “with” you!
I tweeted about the giveaway
8 miles is my favorite distance!
As a non-runner-but-wannabe-runner, my favorite distance is 5K… because it is the shortest. I really want to be a runner because I love participating in runs, however, I’m still trying to figure out the best way to strap down the boobs >_< Right now, running is too painful in that area. Cycling and participating in events like the Tour de Cure (which I actually did when I was pregnant!) helps since it has no impact or "bounce."
My favorite indoor workout is a toss-up between Yoga and Cardio Kick-boxing.
I am a non-runner and love long walks around the Minneapolis lakes with my boys along with outdoor summer yoga sessions.
I love 10ks! 5ks are great but it usually takes a bit after mile 2 for me to REALLY get in the groove, then all you have is one mile left! With a 10k, you still have some mileage to put in after getting into the groove. I would love to win a Garmin – I have been eyeballing them for quite sometime now ๐
I tweeted about the giveaway!!
I love the purple color! My favorite race is a half, but my favorite any-day run is 8 miles.
I’m training for a half in June right now (my first!) but I’d have to say my favorite distance as of now is 10k-it’s just enough to be challenging!
5 miles is my favorite, feels like a decent workout ๐
I’m not a runner, yet! But I’ll start again this spring so this niiiice piece of Garmin would be perfect to help me out! I love to be outside and I take regular long walks with my lover and we love to do some hiking over the weekend! ๐
I enjoy reading your blog!!
My favorite outdoor workout is walking! I live in Minnesota so it can be challenging with the weather at times…but I walk outside year round. I take the usually 2.75 loop Monday-Thursday, but the weekend I love to try new paths, to get about double my usual being I have the extra time. The Garmin would come in super handy to be able to keep track of my lengthy adventures!
I’m training for 50K, but my favorite distance is the half!
I love marathons, but have yet to start training for anything 5 months postpartum!
Soccer is my favorite outdoor activity
5ks all the way. Short and sweet!
10k is my favorite distance!
My favourite race distance is the half marathon. Long enough to have to train for, short enough not to hate the training (I have my second one coming up next month). My favourite for fun distance is 5 miles – perfect workout length.
Good luck with the training!
I love the half marathon distance! I hate it while training (especially those Saturday long runs!!) but during the actual race, I love it! I’ve done a handful of 5Ks and 10Ks but I love the longer distance races. The camaraderie in the racing community of runners of all paces in half marathons is like nothing else I’ve ever experienced! I love how supportive runners are!
Tweeted as well from @mppvt08! (https://twitter.com/mppvt08/status/319650150073110528)
My favorite distance is definitely a 10k!! It doesn’t require training, but I still feel like I got a good workout at the end.
I love half marathon distance!
I love half marathons and as I’m about to run my second marathon in 2.5 weeks i’ll say I have a soft spot for 26.2 too ๐
My favorite outdoor workout is sand volleyball! Make it 4’s and it’s the best thing ever!
