Half marathon news + a Garmin giveaway-ENDED

Thank you so much for those of you who entered the giveaway! It has ended as of 4/5 12:48am.ย

HUGE congrats to the lucky winner, Morgan, who said:

I love 10Ks too! Just enough to get the endorphins going, but not too much that your legs are completely screaming the next day.ย ;)ย (Just loudly complaining.)

Stay tuned for more giveaways in the near future <3 xoxo

For a while there, I was doing ok with the half marathon distance. I was running consistently, even pushing the jogging stroller for a few long runs, feeling great, wanted to keep running/racing, and then the cold weather hit. You might have remembered the Tucson snow (!) and nothing about that made me want to run outside.

Snow 1 of 1

(I guess if you really want it and live in a freezing climate, you just suck it up and do it, but I guess I didn’t want it that badly.)

Since then, I haven’t had much motivation. I’ve gone back to my nighttime workout ways, and have been doing HIIT intervals indoors even though the weather has been so beautiful. I need to enjoy it before it’s back to 6am training run time.

Yup. “Training run.”

I’m running another half marathon, but here’s the kicker: I’m actually going to train for it.

Garmin2

[Scared bird face. You’re welcome, haha.]

For the past two races, my training was really sporadic (some times I went a few weeks in between running at all) and even with the fact that I felt ready, the races were rough, and I didn’t run as well as I’d anticipated. This time, I’m ready to be more consistent and emphasize strength training. At that time, I wasn’t consistent with strength training, which likely had a negative impact on my runs.

The race deets:

I’ll be running the Women’s Running Series Half Marathon in Tempe/Scottsdale in November.

Use the discount code “FITAZGINA” to get $10 off your registration until November 3 if you’d like to run with me!

Garmin

Here’s my plan:

-one long run a week (anything more than that, and I could overtrain with my teaching schedule) building on mileage (Sunday or Monday)

-one short run each week (Tuesday or Thursday)

-consistent strength training. I aim for 3 sessions each week, even though, realistically, I’m happy if I get two

For my training, I’ll also be using my Garmin Forerunner 10 to track distance. I love my Forerunner so much -super light and compact compared to the 305- and was so stoked when Garmin asked if I’d like to do a giveaway.

One lucky winner will receive the new Forerunner 10 in the just-released gorgeous purple color!

Garmin 1 of 1

You have two ways to enter:

1) Leave a comment and tell me your favorite running distance. I love 10ks but feel like there are less and less of them lately. Non runners: what’s your favorite outdoor workout?

2) Tweet, “I want to win a Garmin from @fitnessista #beamazing #lovemygarmin” and leave an extra comment to let me know you tweeted!

I’ll pick the winner tomorrow (4/4 at midnight EST).

Ready, set, go!

xoxo

My favorite race distance is 5 miles (live Austin, Tx’s 5 mile hilly Turkey Trot!) but I prefer 3 miles for weeknight runs after a long day of work.

Current favorite is 10k, but I am training for my first half marathon so that may change! I look forward to following your training journey since your race is a month after mine.

  21. Annie on April 4, 2013 at 12:00 am

I love 10k as well – in fact, I just did my first 10k yesterday and experienced the amazing runner’s high! 10k doesn’t take an awful lot of time, and is enough to make me feel goooood! I’d really really love to have the purple forerunner 10 as my training partner. Pick me pick me ๐Ÿ™‚

  22. julia on April 4, 2013 at 12:00 am

ahh i hope i’m not too late! random, but 8 miles is my FAVORITE distance. discovered it while training for my first half marathon. i realize it’s not an official race distance, but it could be! (and should be ๐Ÿ™‚ )

  23. sarah on April 4, 2013 at 12:07 am

Ok I NEED a purple Garmin in my life.
My favourite running distance is anywhere between 4 & 7 miles I think.

Good luck with your training Gina! You’ll rock that half marry :D.

I love a good 5K! Quick and dirty!

  25. Kelsey on April 4, 2013 at 12:18 am

I’m trying to get back into running (slowly but surely as the weather improves). in my faster days, 5k was my favorite: short and sweet.

  26. Amanda on April 4, 2013 at 12:20 am

I love 5ks. They truly are my nitch. I’m quicker for shorter distances

  27. Amanda S. on April 4, 2013 at 12:22 am

    Hola!

So I think 6 miles is the sweet spot for me. I don’t get injuries with 6 miles, but it’s long enough that I feel challenged and glorious afterwards from all the wonderful oxygenated blood going to my brain (sorry, I’m a nerdy student in health sciences).

TOTALLY relatedly, I was actually just shopping for a running watch/training device. That beautiful Garmin would really make my life and my wrist’s life.

    P.S. I tweeted too! @15minuteslater
P.P.S Pick me purple garmin, pick meee.

  28. Cai on April 4, 2013 at 12:31 am

My favorite distance is a nice 5 miler. Sounds so much better than 4, haha!

  29. Alex Tymkowicz on April 4, 2013 at 12:34 am

I like 10K’s! They’re just long enough to feel really accomplished about the distance but still short enough that I can force myself to focus on speed.

  30. mi-an dela cruz on April 4, 2013 at 12:34 am

my favorite running distance is 6 miles! but my favorite race is 13.1… about to run my second half in 2 months! so would love this gadget!!!

p.s. if i don’t run the nike women’s half in sf in oct, i may join you for this race!

  33. Wendy Heath on April 4, 2013 at 12:35 am

Since I’m a fledgling runner and rather slow, asthmatic, and a little jigglier than I oughtta be ๐Ÿ˜‰ I like 5k’s. I’m not super fast at them by any means, but I like the distance and don’t feel like utter crap after running one!

  34. Angela on April 4, 2013 at 12:37 am

The half! 5 and 10ks are MISERABLE! I feel that in halfs you can still race really hard but can reduce the intensity that you get in 5 and 10ks!

  35. Christin on April 4, 2013 at 12:40 am

I also like the 10k distance. Any more than that and my joints start to hurt!

  36. Joline on April 4, 2013 at 12:41 am

Loved this post! I just signed up for my first 10km race at the end of the month…will be the longest distance I’ve ever ran. I have always just stuck with 5km or ran whatever distance while playing sports. Starting to take this running thing a little bit more serious now and challenging myself more!

I love your Garmin. Its so girly. I think that is my next gadet and next legit runner accessory!

  37. Lindsay on April 4, 2013 at 12:42 am

I average about 9-10 minutes per mile when I put the treadmill on a decent incline. That pace lets me comfortably watch my trashy Bravo shows on my iPod and also work up a sweat in an hour, so I usually end up doing about 6 miles. Multitasking?

  38. Meg on April 4, 2013 at 12:49 am

10k is my favorite distance, and I love that purple Garmin!

  39. Lauren on April 4, 2013 at 12:50 am

What a wonderful giveaway!!! I love the 10k distance, but will be running my first half marathon in May. It was time to challenge my body to do more ๐Ÿ™‚

  40. Sonja on April 4, 2013 at 12:51 am

I love 5Ks as you can squeeze them in a couple of times during the week!

  41. Kaila @healthyhelperblog! on April 4, 2013 at 1:01 am

Favorite running distance is 10 miles for sure!

  42. Liz on April 4, 2013 at 1:01 am

    I love 5ks! I’ve got a need for speed. ๐Ÿ™‚

  43. Jessica on April 4, 2013 at 1:08 am

13.1 is my favorite distance. Long enough for a challenge but short enough to easily train for.

  44. Kim on April 4, 2013 at 1:19 am

My favorite running distance is probably 10 miles. I love running half marathons, but the last three miles are usually my least favorite part. Too bad we don’t have more 10 mile races around. Don’t get me wrong, I do love me a fun half.

  45. Mia on April 4, 2013 at 1:22 am

15K’s are my favorite! Long enough that i have to push myself, but not too long that i start getting injury flair ups.

  47. Allie on April 4, 2013 at 1:24 am

Been running for a while, but never actually ran in a race. Getting stoked for my first 5k!!

  48. Erin on April 4, 2013 at 1:25 am

Oh god, get out of my head!! Ditto for pretty much everything. I have run halfs (my favorite race distance, for sure), but have never successfully trained per the plan. I just kind of procrastinate and all of that. It was one of the many New Year’s resolutions to a) train for a half for reals b) run an 8 minute mile for the first time since 8th grade! Yep, 20 years. So far, so good on the training, though!

I have been wanting a Garmin so badly lately. I think it would be crucial for learning what happens with my pacing as runs progress, but more to the point, I am a data whore. Can’t get enough!

  49. Maggie on April 4, 2013 at 1:31 am

I am with you on those 10k runs!

  50. Amanda on April 4, 2013 at 1:36 am

I just may have to sign up to run that Tempe half, I’ve been looking for a fall race, and I’m considering training for the full Tucson Marathon in December, so it might be perfect! Thanks for the discount code. My favorite distance is the Half. Shorter races make me panic because I feel like I need to be super fast. I love the Marathon but it takes a LOT of training. The half is perfect! Oh and I would love a new purple Garmin!!
