Half marathon news + a Garmin giveaway-ENDED
Thank you so much for those of you who entered the giveaway! It has ended as of 4/5 12:48am.
HUGE congrats to the lucky winner, Morgan, who said:
I love 10Ks too! Just enough to get the endorphins going, but not too much that your legs are completely screaming the next day. (Just loudly complaining.) |
Stay tuned for more giveaways in the near future <3 xoxo

For a while there, I was doing ok with the half marathon distance. I was running consistently, even pushing the jogging stroller for a few long runs, feeling great, wanted to keep running/racing, and then the cold weather hit. You might have remembered the Tucson snow (!) and nothing about that made me want to run outside.
(I guess if you really want it and live in a freezing climate, you just suck it up and do it, but I guess I didn’t want it that badly.)
Since then, I haven’t had much motivation. I’ve gone back to my nighttime workout ways, and have been doing HIIT intervals indoors even though the weather has been so beautiful. I need to enjoy it before it’s back to 6am training run time.
Yup. “Training run.”
I’m running another half marathon, but here’s the kicker: I’m actually going to train for it.
[Scared bird face. You’re welcome, haha.]
For the past two races, my training was really sporadic (some times I went a few weeks in between running at all) and even with the fact that I felt ready, the races were rough, and I didn’t run as well as I’d anticipated. This time, I’m ready to be more consistent and emphasize strength training. At that time, I wasn’t consistent with strength training, which likely had a negative impact on my runs.
The race deets:
I’ll be running the Women’s Running Series Half Marathon in Tempe/Scottsdale in November.
Use the discount code “FITAZGINA” to get $10 off your registration until November 3 if you’d like to run with me!
Here’s my plan:
-one long run a week (anything more than that, and I could overtrain with my teaching schedule) building on mileage (Sunday or Monday)
-one short run each week (Tuesday or Thursday)
-consistent strength training. I aim for 3 sessions each week, even though, realistically, I’m happy if I get two
For my training, I’ll also be using my Garmin Forerunner 10 to track distance. I love my Forerunner so much -super light and compact compared to the 305- and was so stoked when Garmin asked if I’d like to do a giveaway.
One lucky winner will receive the new Forerunner 10 in the just-released gorgeous purple color!
You have two ways to enter:
1) Leave a comment and tell me your favorite running distance. I love 10ks but feel like there are less and less of them lately. Non runners: what’s your favorite outdoor workout?
2) Tweet, “I want to win a Garmin from @fitnessista #beamazing #lovemygarmin” and leave an extra comment to let me know you tweeted!
I’ll pick the winner tomorrow (4/4 at midnight EST).
Ready, set, go!
xoxo

[I’m running the women’s half as part of a paid campaign with Fitfluential. I was pretty stoked to be offered the opportunity- it was a great kicker of motivation. As always, all opinions are my own.]
I think a 5K is my favorite because you’re right, it’s hard to find 10Ks and a half still makes me nervous!
I also tweeted! 🙂

I loved the 1/2 I did two years ago! I injured my hip and am hoping to strength train and get back in the game this year! I enjoy 5k’s, but really love the long distance of a half marathon 🙂
I’ve just started running. I’m training for my first 5k right now actually and it’s kinda scary because I was never much of what you’d call a runner. Growing up I had really bad asthma and I wasn’t ever really allowed to run much, and then as I got older I just hated it. I think even in like middle school my fastest mile was in the 15 minute range. But since I’ve gotten on track with trying to get my health in check I’ve been running, and I really like it. I feel really accomplished whenever I do well, or at least do well in my head haha.
I love 10k distance!!!
Hey! This garmin looks awesome! My favorite running distance is 3 miles. It’s my favorite because I run with my daughter who just turned 1. She does really well in the bob stroller at this distance. My favorite distance race is probably a 10 miler-it’s not too long and not too short. I love to run and actually love to do triathlons. I think I’m going to do a half marathon in early May. Love your blog!
Race distance, I love the 1/2 marathon. I can just in a race without much consistent training and at least finish the race. A full is just SO.LONG. And the training is like a part-time job. I just signed up for my first European race!!! I’m visiting a friend in Germany for a month in May, and we both signed up for a three-country 1/2 Marathon, starting in Basel, Switzerland and running through France and Germany. I just started running again after a break, so I suppose I need to step it up. Ha! Regular training runs, I like 6-miles. It’s long enough to feel like I accomplished something, and short enough to have all of my day left.
5K. That’s about how long my 13 month old will last in the jogging stroller!
Oooh that Garmin is so pretty 🙂 I’m not a great runner, but I would love to become better at it! And my favorite distance for a run or a walk with my pup is usually 3 miles.
Just tweeted!!
Love purple, and love to run – my favorite distance is the half, but I have come to even enjoy the marathon – Qualified for Boston at Houston 2012, so Boston Bound in 2014!!!
I love half-marathons. It’s an accomplishment but the training is manageable and doesn’t leave me without motivation for months (like the marathon does!)
I love the 5K but also really like the 15K (Boilermaker woot woot!!).
tweeted! 🙂
I’m not much of a runner (yet!) but right now my favorite outdoor activity is Biking!
I also love 10k’s..they are the perfect distance:) I have a 5k coming up this Saturday (Doc Dash!) 😀
Good luck training! I think my favorite is probably a 10k, I feel like it’s not too much time out of my days to train for it and it’s a pretty quick race…though it makes me feel like I worked harder since it’s longer than 3 miles!
I love 5ks but this watch will hopefully get me to a longer distance
Since I live in the Midwest and its still cold, I’ve been running indoors with the help if some apps on my phone. As soon as the weather warms up, I’m going to work on adding distance outdoors. I’m pretty new to running, but I’m liking it!
I tweeted! @goalcalledlife
Favorite Race distance- 8k, favorite non-race distance- 9 miles. I love slow, steady and long. Running my first half marathon next week. EEK!
my favorite distance is 2.5 mi because that’s as far as I can go right now! But I’m working on bumping that up.
Love running 5k or 10k, but would love to do a half marathon before my joints give out! Nursing a swollen ankle now:(!
I’m new to running, so I’m working my way to a 5k right now, but I aspire to run half marathons eventually!
I love 13.1 Miles. 🙂
1/2 Marathon is my absolute favorite distance. I’m following my first training plan right now! Half is in 11 days, eek. Training makes such a difference!
Also completed the tweet portion of the giveaway! (@groveysgirl)
I love 5Ks. Short, sweet and cheap!
I tweeted too!

My favorite distance is the half-marathon. It challenges me and the wave of accomplishment that comes over me at the finish line is unbeatable. I cannot wait to race this season! The Garmin would help with my “super speediness” 😀
I love 10k!!
I’m not much of a runner, so my favorite distance would probably be the 5K. I much prefer to do HIIIT cardio sessions!
My fave outdoor workout is definitely boot camp!!!
I love 10ks, but I think I’m going to start working my way up to a half marathon.
I tweeted the giveaway! Thank you!
I love running 10 miles!
Tweeted! (you’re like my 15th tweet ever! 🙂 )
i feel so honored!
The only race I’ve ever run is a half-marathon so I guess that’s my favorite..?! I’m currently training for my third one and am gunning for a big PR. A new garmin would be a huge help!
I would love to win this! I am just starting to train for my first race ever! A 10k this summer, a little nervous about how to approach training but very grateful for the blog world to help with advice!
Half marathon is my fave!
I also tweeted! @MelQuestionMark
10K Totally. But a half marathon is an attainable challenge!
My favorite distance to run is a 5k. I ran a half marathon last spring and ended up injuring myself during training (due to overtraining). I am looking to run another half this summer and i’m hoping that something that helps me keep better track of my mileage will motivate me to stick to a better schedule!
10K is my fav too! It’s a doable distance even if my training schedule gets a little cray yet it always still feels like something worth training for vs a 5K which a lot of times end up being a ton of fun but not very competitive. Love the purple color Garmin!
My favorite outdoor activity is outdoor yoga, but tennis is a close second! I’m trying to get more into running and now that the weather is getting better (i live in the northeast) I’ve been able to get outside more to run.
I like doing mixed intervals of fast sprints and walking outside!
Pre-baby, it was a half. Post-baby…. let’s start with the fun runs again! (but dream about a half)
I love 10k too but I am doing my first 10 mile race in a couple weeks we will see how that goes 😮
My favorite distance is a 10k. Now that I live in the North Dakota, where there are no hills, I would love to find a trail race with hills galore!
