Half marathon news + a Garmin giveaway-ENDED

Thank you so much for those of you who entered the giveaway! It has ended as of 4/5 12:48am.

HUGE congrats to the lucky winner, Morgan, who said:

I love 10Ks too! Just enough to get the endorphins going, but not too much that your legs are completely screaming the next day. ;) (Just loudly complaining.)

Stay tuned for more giveaways in the near future <3 xoxo

For a while there, I was doing ok with the half marathon distance. I was running consistently, even pushing the jogging stroller for a few long runs, feeling great, wanted to keep running/racing, and then the cold weather hit. You might have remembered the Tucson snow (!) and nothing about that made me want to run outside.

Snow 1 of 1

(I guess if you really want it and live in a freezing climate, you just suck it up and do it, but I guess I didn’t want it that badly.)

Since then, I haven’t had much motivation. I’ve gone back to my nighttime workout ways, and have been doing HIIT intervals indoors even though the weather has been so beautiful. I need to enjoy it before it’s back to 6am training run time.

Yup. “Training run.”

I’m running another half marathon, but here’s the kicker: I’m actually going to train for it.

Garmin2

[Scared bird face. You’re welcome, haha.]

For the past two races, my training was really sporadic (some times I went a few weeks in between running at all) and even with the fact that I felt ready, the races were rough, and I didn’t run as well as I’d anticipated. This time, I’m ready to be more consistent and emphasize strength training. At that time, I wasn’t consistent with strength training, which likely had a negative impact on my runs.

The race deets:

I’ll be running the Women’s Running Series Half Marathon in Tempe/Scottsdale in November.

Use the discount code “FITAZGINA” to get $10 off your registration until November 3 if you’d like to run with me!

Garmin

Here’s my plan:

-one long run a week (anything more than that, and I could overtrain with my teaching schedule) building on mileage (Sunday or Monday)

-one short run each week (Tuesday or Thursday)

-consistent strength training. I aim for 3 sessions each week, even though, realistically, I’m happy if I get two

For my training, I’ll also be using my Garmin Forerunner 10 to track distance. I love my Forerunner so much -super light and compact compared to the 305- and was so stoked when Garmin asked if I’d like to do a giveaway.

One lucky winner will receive the new Forerunner 10 in the just-released gorgeous purple color!

Garmin 1 of 1

You have two ways to enter:

1) Leave a comment and tell me your favorite running distance. I love 10ks but feel like there are less and less of them lately. Non runners: what’s your favorite outdoor workout?

2) Tweet, “I want to win a Garmin from @fitnessista #beamazing #lovemygarmin” and leave an extra comment to let me know you tweeted!

I’ll pick the winner tomorrow (4/4 at midnight EST).

Ready, set, go!

xoxo

I love 10ks as well! Not as intimidating as a half, but still a challenge.

  2. em on April 3, 2013 at 11:02 am

I’ve never “trained” for a race of any kind, so my favorite distance is just a casual 2-3 miler. The farthest I have ever run was a 10k and it was rough since I didn’t train or build my endurance up for it.

  3. Aisha K. on April 3, 2013 at 11:02 am

I would love to win the Garmin. I plan on running some 5k races this summer after I deliver my 2nd child in early May to help me get back into shape!

    I tweted! 🙂

  5. Allison on April 3, 2013 at 11:03 am

The purple Garmin is very cool! I’d say 10k is my favorite because I feel a sense of accomplishment without the stress and anticipation of a longer run. That being said, I need to start running again with the weather warming up.

  6. Kristin on April 3, 2013 at 11:03 am

I like 5 mile races the best. There aren’t many around, but I feel like its the perfect mid-distance!

  7. Simply Life on April 3, 2013 at 11:03 am

    Favorite distance is half-marathon!

  8. Sarah on April 3, 2013 at 11:04 am

I’m with you 10k are the best but lately I’ve had to push it up to 10 milers or half-marathons. Would love to win the Garmin – I have an empty hole in my life where a Garmin should be!

  9. Janice on April 3, 2013 at 11:04 am

Although I’ve never officially done a 10k, I’m gonna say 10k. I’ve done an 8k & I’ve done a half, but during my training it was the distance I could hold on to then the wheels kinda fell off.

  10. Stephanie on April 3, 2013 at 11:04 am

One of my 2013 goals is to run a half marathon. I feel a need to train for something! I try to fit one long run in every week, I find it relaxing and I love spending time outdoors.

I used to just be a 3-4 miler kind of gal, but now I love the 5-6 mile runs I’ve been using during my training! I’ve only done a few 5K’s, BUT I’m signed up for my first half in June! I’m thinking 13.1 will be a fun distance, yet challenging at the same time! This Garmin is BEAUTIFUL (I loveee the purple!)

I love the half marathon distance!!

  15. Kristen on April 3, 2013 at 11:04 am

I like running half’s – it makes me train for it and takes me outside of my comfort zone. For normal workout runs, I love a 4-5 miler. Just enough to push you over the edge but still allows you to squeeze other stuff in at the gym with it.

  16. Paige on April 3, 2013 at 11:05 am

I love 10k’s as well…but I’m currently training for my first half marathon!

  17. Rachel on April 3, 2013 at 11:05 am

I love running 5ks with friends!

  18. Jacquelyn @justjacq on April 3, 2013 at 11:05 am

As still a newbie/half-serious runner, 5K’s are my favorite distance. After about 40 minutes I start to get bored running so 5k’s are perfect. I’d like to up it to 10k one day soon. One day……. 😉

  19. Miranda on April 3, 2013 at 11:05 am

I’d say 6-7sih miles is my favorite distance for a “long” run. So glad the weather is warming up!

  20. Kristen on April 3, 2013 at 11:05 am

Ive only completed 5k’s and two 10k races so far in my running ‘career’ but I was oddly surprised at how I enjoyed the 10k distance. It takes me about 2 miles to decide I don’t hate running and I’m NOT crazy for signing up for the race so the 10k gives me more miles to enjoy running than a 5k does 🙂 next goal is a half and see how I like that!

  21. Sarah on April 3, 2013 at 11:05 am

I am hoping to get back in to running with with weather clearing up 🙂 hoping to do a 5k and work my way up to a half. Thanks for the chance to win!!

I love half marathons because they are a challenge, and you feel so accomplished after.

  24. Arianne on April 3, 2013 at 11:05 am

I love running 8 miles..anything above that I usually have to really mentally get into the run to push myself but I can always comfortably run 8 and feel awesome afterwards. For racing purposes, I like 10k’s too. Not too long, not too short. Definitely wanna conquer a half marathon soon though!

  25. theresa @ aspoonfulofsunshine on April 3, 2013 at 11:06 am

My favorite distance is 5 miles! Not too short, but not long 🙂

I love 10Ks too! It seems to be the perfect amount of time running where you don’t feel exhausted but you’ve put in a good workout!

  28. Becca on April 3, 2013 at 11:06 am

I love 10ks too! Training isn’t so much of a time commitment and you actually feel like you can race it instead of just hoping to make it to the finish line! That said, I’m also working on my half marathon time/training. I’m like you, I can be pretty bad and miss full weeks of long runs!

  29. Audra on April 3, 2013 at 11:06 am

I can only handle a 5K but I would love to work up! I seem to get burnt out of running VERY quickly! 🙁 My favorite indoor activity is spinning hands down! 🙂

  30. Lauren on April 3, 2013 at 11:06 am

I love to hike with my dog a couple of miles every other weekend!

I’m just now mentally preparing to get back to running. (Come on 50+ degree weather!)
I’ve only ever run a 5K so I guess for now that’s my favorite distance. 🙂

  37. Jen on April 3, 2013 at 11:07 am

I’m with you on the 10k! Longest I’ve done are half marathons, but want to try a full someday!

  38. Alexis on April 3, 2013 at 11:07 am

I’m not a huge runner, but I love me an 8K. It’s the perfect distance for me to really get in the zone and push myself — 5Ks are fun but I feel like they’re over so quickly! And anything longer than an 8K makes my knees cry … so 8K it is 🙂

  40. Emily @ The Swallow Flies on April 3, 2013 at 11:08 am

I love half marathons. Pretty much anything over a 5K is tolerable for me — which is so weird to hear myself say. I used to hate running!.

  41. Megan W. on April 3, 2013 at 11:08 am

I love 10ks as well and am looking for some DC area races that support local causes!

  42. Amanda on April 3, 2013 at 11:08 am

My current fav indoor workout is anything from Turbo Fire, but I’m getting Chalean Extreme soon so I’m excited to try that!

  43. Melissa on April 3, 2013 at 11:08 am

I’ve run several distances and have a different appreciation for each. I feel like I perform best (and have seen the most improvement) at the 10K but have special love for the half marathon–long enough to feel “accomplished” but not quite as soul (and body) crushing as the marathon!

  47. Claire B on April 3, 2013 at 11:09 am

Congrats on the next race! I just started training for my first 50K Trail Race and am hoping this will be a new favorite distance. I do enjoy half-marathons a bunch! But honestly, anything running outside, I’ll be happy (I’m one who has to run in snow/ice all winter…).

  48. Alison on April 3, 2013 at 11:09 am

Hiking outside is my favorite form of summer exercise!
